Have to give some credit to our bowlers here, a real team effort
An odd days play - managed to get in early enough to have a look at the pitch before the toss, and it looked like a wicket that you might have fancied a bowl on, yet both sides wanted to bat, influenced, you suspect, by the desire not to be starting off at high tide in the two coming afternoons.
I'd say at close of play, honours are more or less even. Dernbach was the standout for Surrey - shorn of all the silly variations, he is a decent low 80s swing bowler, and he hit a great length throughout. Big Morne was Big Morne - looked threatening, but bowled a yard too short throughout. He also finished the day with one of the worst overs I've ever seen. Virdi had one good over - though he appeared lucky with one of the wickets - but was generally unthreatening, though accurate. He was much better at The Oval earlier in the year.
For Yorkshire (seconds - though for once we were only 7-4 up on the absentee list), Ballance and Lyth showed their quality, whilst Jonny Tattersall played another really good knock - shushing some of the members, who are gutted at the treatment Andy Hodd has received.
