The player ones are generally bigger and thus made from lower density clefts, these likely have higher performance.

Super Low density clefts might give greater rebound but they also cost a fortune and often break in a matter of months, so they're not really suitable for amateur cricketers who have to pay for their own bats and play on pitches with short boundaries anyway. Like driving to work through a30mph speed limit in an f1 car that breaks down every 100 miles. Pointless and illadvised.

But if you have the money to burn and that’s why you want to do with it...

What a load of nonsense.

So plenty of potentially high performance willow is sifted out of the top grades on account of not being 'good looking' enough? Would you not agree that this is slightly at odds with what Edward said?

Sorry @Bats_Entertainment  I’m not sure what Edward has said I just got that from there video, the only one I know more about is the way salix would grade and oat 1st stage before pressing the only way is cosmetically, once pressing and shaping you may end up downgrading a cleft if something is uncovered in the shaping sanding and vice versa although very rarely did AJK ever grade up some of the best looking lower end willow of any brand, that is until GM released the sig last year, stunning value for money

Not sure any is wasted basically

I asked him if they graded on looks or performance. He said they graded on their assessment of performance.

I wasn't suggesting any was wasted. Rather never got a chance to be top grade. That, of course, may be a good thing for you or I?

Would you expect free knocking in, bat cover, anti scuff sheet, extra grip, 6 months warranty and shipping for your £100?

No.

Their assessment of performance may well be in line with how the cricket bat industry has operated for years, i.e. assessing likely performance based on looks; as a general rule better looking willow will likely perform better.

I've experienced this industry from all angles, except behind the drawknife. I can't give the definitive piece of evidence that seems so desperately needed on this forum (but less so away from it) but am very much of the opinion that the above generally rings true.
If you were to disregard the cost, and base a choice purely on looks giving a likely indicator of how well a bat will 'go' - I would choose evenly spaced straight grains every time. Not necessarily a 'clean' face or many grains, but straight and even.

That isn't to say GM don't gauge performance in other ways, I don't know enough about their entire process even as a former retailer who has visited their factory many times. What I will say is they are the most open and honest large manufacturer I've ever dealt with. More than happy to answer any questions, showcase their entire operation to the public and are proud that they make their bats in England. The fact the owner of the business takes the time to come on the forum and answer questions and still gets cross examined like he's pulling the wool over peoples eyes is beyond me. I've never seen Richard Gray from Gray Nicolls on here, I've never even met Brett from Kookaburra and I used to live round the corner from him.

Given the above, I am not saying there aren't some fantastic bargains out there, and these GM Signatures do seem good value for money and certainly seem to perform, although i'll add a counter argument here, we had some Paragon Signatures about 3 years ago that I couldn't shift for love nor money. No idea why, they weren't bad, though perhaps not as good as the ones cropping up recently. It must be remembered that a significant skew of opinion on this forum abut the GM Signature has been the opinion of @SOULMAN1012
Having stood at the other end of the wicket to Chris on more than one occasion, it must be said that he is likely to find the performance in all but the plankiest of bats. Whilst it is true that a good player may be able to notice the subtle differences between bats more because he is consistently marmalizing the ball out of the middle, it must be remembered that these small differences aren't of much use to mere mortals who might be better placed getting a 909 instead of an OLE and spending the rest on some coaching.

I have thought about this point before, why the forum seems to struggle to attract sponsors who want to interact, but I guess by its nature, the place is full of people with a thirst for knowledge and who like to question everything (not always as politely as they should). i presume in nearly all cases the time spend in answering these just doesn't balance up with any possible increased profits. And worst case a few to honest answers might even take things the other way.

I am tarring a great many with the same brush, but I can't help but feel the ones who ask these questions/moan about being ripped off/conned are the same who post on the forum about their non-sponsor purchases from far more unscrupulous places than the likes of our sponsors or GM, usually because it was a 'bargain' or they 'got a deal' .............

The best value for money branded bats can be purchased online or from 1 of the 586 Sportsdirect stores which allow buyers to walk in and pick up and feel the pings on offer and leave with a bargain.

But then forum members would never be caught dead walking into a Sportsdirect store  :)

Actually I think you'll find the exact opposite...

If you have a search there was even a thread comparing Sports Direct bargains when they had their really silly sale a couple of years ago.

Disagree on both points.

Did Edward Lowry say they grade on 'assessment of performance'? Or did he not?

I asked a simple question about grading on looks or performance. I was far from rude.

I look for 'a deal', for sure. Why wouldn't I when supposedly 'top' cricket bats retail for £600. I am not wealthy. And, in any case, mediocre cricketers spending this sort of money on bats look ridiculous, in my opinion.

I only want a bat to feel nice in my hands and ping nicely.
