Well, if the alternative is Sam Curran at 5 or 6?

Ideally no. Maybe Root moves down one or Roy bat's five, depends who you go for. But... Go for someone, bacause we won't play six bowlers in the Ashes, and it'd be better to look at someone who might fill that gap. Even if the first test side is fixed, you don't know what will happen, so give the next cab a bit of experience.

I want to believe in Hameed, but it just doesn�t seem to be happening. Indeed it may not happen until he changes county/dumps his dad as coach.

I still think Malan deserves another couple of chances. Mind you, I�m still touting this mental Ashes XI:

Roy and Bairstow opening with Woakes at 3, that's mental enough...but only two quicks plus Stokes and two spinners?? Even more mental! Not even got to no Butler yet!

Curran (or Woakes) at 6 makes some sense, because that's potentially only one Stokes injury away anyway, but having no number 5 bat and giving Lewis Gregory a random game instead of testing out the next batsman in is bizarre. Can't see how we're not going to call up another batsman at some stage in the Ashes, so given the chance it's daft not to give Sibley (or whoever) a run out first.

For the Ashes, England has to play Anderson and Woakes along with anyone who can move the ball in the air. The limp wristed and spineless Australian top/middle order are absolutely useless when the ball is doing a bit, and will fold like a deck of cards. England could bat reverse order and still be fine, you'd only be chasing 30.
I predict another series whitewash, and I'm Australian. On fairly flat bouncy wickets in Australia it might be different, but our blokes just don't have the patience, concentration or balls to tough it out and wait for the conditions to suit them.

Not as mental as you may think.

Cricket is partly a mental game, Bairstow and Roy are simple souls, just let them keep doing what they are doing

With no other obvious candidate, everyone keeps saying what a great batting technique Woakes has, let him do it

2 quicks with both Stokes and Woakes in support, lessens the workload on both of the previously mentioned

Sorry, missed Woakes as a bowler as got perplexed by him being at 3!

Big ask to have him at 3 still for me mate but each to their own. A decent technique for a number 7/8 doesn't make him a top 3, especially following Roy and Bairstow. Also think the Aussies would rather see Foakes coming to the crease than Butler. Although I can see your thinking, it's not for me.

That's pretty scathing haha! But is England really any stronger? Personally I can't see this being anything other than a great series, both sides have massive question marks in my opinion. Both sides have their stars and both their unknowns.

As much as you can look into the A series, they haven't lost a game, the bats are making good runs, the reserve bowlers are doing their job. Add to that the most prevalent run scorer in county cricket is Australian, I feel like our stocks are reasonably healthy.

I honestly think it will be one or the more competitive series we have seen in a while.

Closer series at home for England vs Australis (the 3-0 scoreline flattered us previously)

Absolute whopping when Australia play at home against England.

Surprised there are such low expectations of the Aussie side. England don�t have the dominance in tests we have in one daters

Look at both bowling attacks over 5 matches and you might see a close series

Starc, hazlewood,Lyon and Cummins if they can all stay on the park and fit could do well in our conditions.

I am really interested to see what the pitches are going to be like for the Ashes. When you consider what we got for the World Cup (although I realise that was an ICC event).

But we have never ever played an Ashes series this late ie. Starting in August. You have to go back to 2005 for anything close and they started on 21st July.

There has been a lot of cricket on these pitches.
