Roy asking for a nightwatchman is as weak as it gets

Jennings did the same in columbo

Why is it any different from your 3/4/5 asking for one??

Leach might have just saved Jason Roy’s Test career?

Tricky one the night watchman....1 over wonder what we would do ?

It’s an openers worst nightmare.

I think i would go out with 2 overs left, 1.....hmm  :)

I wonder how the conversation went between Roy and Burns.... what if they both wanted a night watchman? You can't send 2 out can you?? Burns could have got stitched right up there, with Roy hiding in the changing room.

Jennings was a bottle job in Columbo.

A number 3/4/5 asking for one is a bottle job too...

Leach has done it more than once now, maybe he saw this as an opportunity to nail down his spot as opener in the Ashes!

The guy at the non-striker's end will never face a delivery when you only have one over to face and have a night watchman on strike as they aren't going to run a single.

They must have both wanted the night watchman otherwise the one who was happy to bat would have played out the only over with the other one watching from the other end

A guess the new player in the side gets asked if he wants one...

So Burns with more caps..not by much..would give up the right to a night watchman

But that’s a guess

jeez...everyone comes out of the woodwork to hound a bloke for wanting a night watchman. he would have been stupid to not take one. as is the way with night watchmen one batter has to join them at the crease and as it happens, burns didn't even have to do anything anyway. also, had leach fallen, roy would have come out and then you're back to where you started, so the issue with burns wanting a nightwatchman as well as roy and him being stitched up is an irrelevant point.

also, who cares if he wanted a night watchman, I wouldn't fancy batting after fielding for 60 overs in the heat for one over with nothing to gain.

blokes just been part of a World Cup winning squad, and has just been given his test debut, lets wait and see how it pans out first.

hey, I've got a better idea, lets just tear roy to shreds cause he's a total coward and I look cool and edgy on the internet.

Let's get this straight I have absolutely no problem with anyone having a night watchman, that is their choice, as part of our brilliant game.

However, what I do find interesting is who got the night watchman. Obviously they probably both wanted one but it was Burns who walked out. Yes he was most likely to stand at the non-strickers end but it doesn't always work out that way.

With Leach taking the 6 balls that would be bowled this evening, the only question was who would bat first tomorrow and who would wait for a wicket to fall.  Given Roy has batted at 3 for Surrey in the CC I am sure it was a fairly straightforward decision

If a wicket had fallen would anyone have had to come out anyway, or would time have been called?

I remember Bairstow not taking a night watchman, then getting out and getting hammered for it. You can't win!!

Yes very true, I don’t recall nightwatchmen being used so much back in the 80’s or even 90’s

With 1 over to go your on a hiding to nothing so don’t blame any batsmen taking it
If a wicket had fallen it would of been time I’m pretty sure

Looks like one of Starc or Hazlewood will miss out in place of Pattinson, Pattinson has been rapid in the warm up event the Aussies are playing
