Lots of fast bowlers and not many extra batsmen.

Averages of English openers since Strauss retired:
Buttler 4.00
Roy 5.00
Denly 11.50
Trott 12.00
Ali 14.00
Lyth 20.38
Burns 22.28
Duckett 23.00
Jennings 25.16
Hales 27.28
Stoneman 27.68
Carberry 28.10
Robson 30.54
Compton 31.12
Hameed 32.00
Root 41.70
Cook 42.52
Leach 46.50

Does Roy not average 38?? Presume this list was made after innings one.

Always said we should have let robson have a much longer shot.

Yep that was my 1st thought - when you add Marsh into that as well and the fact that Australia only ever play 3 seamers, plus they picked a squad of 17.

By not picking Carey, Wade is also effectively the back up keeper and he really isn't great with the gloves.

The bowling will be interesting as Cummins, Pattinson and Lyon will definitely play so that leaves 1 spot - will it be Starc or Siddle or Nesser or Hazelwood etc....

The Australian media says Head can also keep but I'm not sure if that accurate

For Birmingham I'd expect them to pick Pattinson, Cummins and Siddle. Starc and Hazlewood where dreadful in that warm up march

Agreed i think Siddle will play at Edgbaston.

It's interesting that all the Aussies that are playing County Cricket have been picked in the squad - i do think that Langer thinks a lot differently and knows English conditions etc...

Bancroft is also quite an accomplished gloveman, has kept regularly in shield and BBL before.

Carey had an amazing World cup, but his first class record sits under 30 and really hasn't shown much outside of one day cricket that would demand selection.

And Aus won't drop Starc, Hazelwood will only play in the event of injuries from everything he has shown since returning from injury.
