No, Joe
That's the most upset I've been to see someone dismissed in the 90s since Jack Leach! :(

England well ahead and only two outcomes possible either England win or it’s a draw.  The only way Australia wins is if other batsmen in top 6 step up especially the openers.

Time to put Bairstow out of his misery. 69 Tests, averaging 35 with just 6 centuries. It's quite clear he's not going to improve.

Thought Denly was exceptional today, fair play to him. Seemed to put that big drive away for once and just took his time, although enjoyed the way he took on Lyon early in the day. Kudos to Stokes too, maybe Buttler too but he got out quite cheaply. Smith's catch to get Woakes was great. Suspect we've more than enough, but would like to see us get over 400 to put the nail in the coffin.

Really hope that's the last we see of Bairstow for some time from the test side, that being said it's all set up for him to have a strop in front of the press; nobody to blame but himself. I know Foakes has had a poor season, but I'm still of the opinion he was unfairly dropped in the first place just to accomodate Bairstow.

@rickjames Buttler made 47, is just shy of waving your bat considered "quite cheaply" now? ???

Some of the shots he played were very good and it was fun to watch, but I don't think he needed to play the shot he did; granted with the lead we have he had a bit of license, but he kinda fell hook line sinker for it.

Also Leach should be in ahead of both Archer and Broad

Butler has been solid for us for 12 months, reading him described as a luxury player on here is just mind boggling.

Denly seriously pleased for him, I know his selection has split us armchair selectors but he’s done pretty well. Initially probably a temporary stop gap but I’m not sure he is anymore. If Root goes back to 4 long term, Denly could bat 3 with a new opener in place, gives a bit of experience ahead of Root.

Bairstow as @rickjames mentions may be heading for some karma, toys out when Foakes took the gloves and clearly he wants two positions in the team. He’s got to go, may not be Foakes that replaces him but Butler. Cannot see how Bairstow is a better keeper and over 12-18  months he’s not a better batsman than Butler..who is the ultimate ‘white ball biffer’ Turned into intelligent lower order batsman in tests.

Pope should be in the squad for the winter with Bairstow gone and probably Roy leaving gaps to pick Sibley and Pope.

I think myself Bairstow and Roy should just be short format players.

Not that I think it's a smart move right now and the focus should be on his batting, but if they really wanted to invest in Pope long term you could gradually work him in as a keeper-batsman; filled in admirably at Surrey when he's had to, but again, shoehorning might not be great idea

Did you actually watch the game?
It looked as if Buttler was actually trying to play a "dab pull" into the gap for a single, but got a top edge. It's kinda harsh to say a mistimed shot was falling "hook line sinker for it"

And pulled off the second best catch of the game,

Should have spent less time in the bar! Butler hardly fell for the trap

Cam is right he top edge a dab pull

I think Harris has been off the field all day today, will he be allowed to open tomorrow?  If not who opens for Aus?  Would it be Wade?
