If you’re used to playing at a level with fairly poo keepers I doubt you’ll notice the change, but if you’re use to proper keepers you’ve got a lot more time to get back if you do get beaten.

This.. if I leave my crease vs a spinner and miss it I’m gone 99% of the time. If the keeper is a Back, I’ll get back every time and I’ll defiantly be coming down the crease most balls to force the bowler short. Easy easy pickings with a keeper back hence why you can’t do it in a competitive game as it distorts it.

Still, if it allows friendlies to be played then crack on. Better to be safe than not safe or not play

I don't really get the 'competitive cricket can't be played if some people don't play' argument. Why not? Though I do think it's totally fair to say the more the rules have to chance the less seriously the cricket is likely to be taken.

The 2020 season has officially been cancelled...  :(

The Hampshire Cricket League has abandoned its entire summer programme for the first time in its 48-year history due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic.

The league’s 299 teams were due to have begun their 17-rounds of matches four weeks ago on May 9, but long before then the ECB suspended all domestic cricket countrywide.

That suspension now extends to at least 1 August, leaving only five Saturdays of the season left and making it impossible for the Hampshire League’s teams to play anything other than friendly matches, if they even get the chance to do that.

League chairman Denis Emery explained: “We decided a while ago that if restrictions were to be  lifted so we could play by June 27, we would complete the second half of the season over an eight-week period in July and August, with promotion and relegation between our 17 divisions being administered.  

“Directly the ECB extended the suspension of domestic cricket – initially until July 4 and now August 1 – we could obviously not fulfil even half the season, so reluctantly we’ve had to abandon the league altogether.

“As soon as we get a re-start date, the HCL Committee will inform clubs and will be available to help with any queries to get games on.

“We will also soon send out a Covid-19 questionnaire for clubs’ feedback on their preparations ready for a start.

“We are all fully aware there is a far bigger picture here with this pandemic and can just hope that, if the barrier is lifted and they get the opportunity, clubs can arrange friendly matches between themselves and get some desperately needed income into their coffers.”

They've contradicted the ECB there, August 1st was for professional cricket. Recreational cricket is 'suspended until further notice'. It probably won't be by then, but would be an interesting one if the ok for amateurs came by June 27th!

The ECB 3 days ago actually released a statement saying recreational cricket is following a different path to the professional domestic game.

The least they could have done is keep the league structure so people could use the fixtures as friendlies

Not to let HCB off the hook, but it just shows how utterly useless the ECB's communications are if a cricket board can totally misunderstand it like this.

What we need from the ECB is positive, proactive, clear, well-organised leadership. What we get is negative, reactive, confused and chaotic.

I'm seeing the same discussions on here, facebook, twitter, WhatsApp and linkedin: I haven't found a single person who is impressed with the way the ECB are handling this.

Cheshire county league have also said they're looking at a regionalised T20 comp only starting 1 August.

I think they have read the ECB note wrong though, as they say it's been confirmed that there will be no recreational cricket before then. In fact the only thing the ECB note DOES say is that recreational cricket is on a different timescale to 1 August!

If it turns out to be allowed from July (say) and we can't play because the board have been planning for the wrong thing I will be pi**ed.

If you were only able to get half a league season in, how would you feel about promotion and relegation? with the potential for teams to be forced into 7 day isolations should they come into contact with Covid19 and many players not playing due to feeling uncomfortable about catching it or being high risk, I don't think it would be fair on any team to be relegated nor promoted.

Might be an unpopular opinion as I would love some competitive cricket rather than a load of friendlies, but I don't see how it can work.

I think IF we got half a season in then one up one down would be a reasonable compromise. That relies on all the clubs having access to their grounds though, which may not be a given. Not too fussed about weakened sides as that's part and parcel of the game - days when clubs got the same 11 out every week are long gone, so long as everyone puts sides out it would be ok. Suspect that's probably not sustainable for a full league structure though, inevitably some sides wouldn't be able to get 11 which would start to cause problems. Understand why a lot of leagues have called promotion off even if they did it a bit early - sadly probably the right call in the long run. I'm sure some leagues will come up with good solutions to keep things competitive even if many don't.

The Two Counties has sent out a communication that as long as the league structure can start by the 2nd half of the season which for us is July the 4th or within a couple of weeks of that date then they favoured format is 1 up and 1 down. The exception being the EAPL which have already stated there will be no relegation which I assume means no promotion either. The EAPL is made up of teams from Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex I believe so all there div1 teams in that region must be the same that no promotion will exist.

TVL looking to start on 18th, extend the season by one week as the 18th is week 11, so week 10 fixtures now on 12th September.

We've got a friendly booked in for next Saturday provisionally vs Amersham, not sure if home or away but Amersham is a lovely place to play if we are away.
