Faced some genuine pace on Saturday for the first time in a very long time. A young South African quick playing for a local village side here in South Wales. He was bowling in the low 80s which isn't all that quick if you're a professional but pretty sharp for a recreational player like me! I wore a couple of rising deliveries high on the gloves which, considering i'm 6'2, shows you how quick he was bowling. Anyway, it was a real test of both technique and guts for 3 or 4 overs but i must say i was disappointed when they took him off for a rest. Obviously I got out to the slow trundler from the other end  :D

Stand in skipper this weekend and we beat the top of our div to move joint top. We made 189 - 4 off 40, I made 47 no off 36 balls with one of my bats, which felt great! We then had them 50 - 5, but a load of dropped catches meant it got too close for comfort and we ended up winning by 6 runs with a run out. Not sure I like this captaincy lark!  😆

Guested today for the same team I played for last week, a Division 6 match in the Nidderdale League and got verbally abused whilst umpiring (player umpire) for not giving an LBW (which wasn't even close). Our batsman was forward, trying to sweep with his front pad well outside off that I doubt anyone would have seriously appealed for in the York & District Senior Cricket League. However this guy exploded with rage when I didn't give it and I got crap from the other fielders too, some who were square of the wicket !!!

We then couldn't defend 180+ which was down to a combination of shocking captaincy and even worse fielding. I think one chap dropped 5 catches, some others dropped 2 or 3 but annoyingly nothing came my way (in the air or on the ground) to the point that I think sanitised more often than I fielded the ball.

Had my first bad game of the season as we lost yet again.

Batted first and only got 151/8 off our 40. I went in for a hat trick ball with 3.1 overs to go, survived it and was bowled next over for 1. Then really struggled with the wind as my first over went for 16 before I bowled the guy going the damage round his legs. Ended up 1/24 from 4 but I was not good enough. They chased 5 down, deserved the win as we were not good enough. Could hear some grumbling from the groundsman about how nobody would take responsibility and would find something to blame, but I held my hands up regarding my performance.

We are missing our two best bats at present, one injured and the other for family reasons, but we have enough still to at least be competitive and put a decent total on the board. Our top order chewed a lot of dots up against a very average opening bowler, which was tough to watch. I'm frustrated that I haven't been able to train for several weeks as I'm working both my jobs pretty much full time, but am feeling in good nick despite this.

Very frustrating season for me so far, although my Saturday team have won 5 out of 6. First game for seconds I batted 4 and got 42. Then demoted to 8, with players who'd scored less runs promoted ahead of my. Then 'rested' the next game. We've had a lot of new players this year and now have two very strong teams. Then batted 3 and 4 in the next 2 games, scoring 23 and 27. Then demoted back to 8 as I batted too slowly, despite being a very tricky wicket the week before. Yes pleased we won again, but being a specialist batsman at 8 isn't great. Joined my team a few seasons ago, having previously played at a higher standard than our 1's. Got 2 tons in first 4 games including one on debut, so they know I can bat. Some others can't believe I've been demoted to 8, especially as 2 not outs means I'm averaging nearly 40. They are a great bunch, but I'm considering making myself unavailable for the rest of the season or even moving clubs next year. Just fed up and not feeling appreciated at the moment.  :(

That sounds pretty rubbish! I hope things look up for you soon. A new club can be a welcome change, but if you like the people in the team it can be worth sticking around. The key question is - are you having fun?  If not, why are you still there?

Not sure where you are based but why not say you're unavailable this weekend then advertise your services in the "I'm Free" section of this website? Sometimes a change is as good as a break.

Played my first game on Saturday. Have had pretty bad dizziness since the end of last season which stopped me playing early doors. Still cant properly run without feeling dizzy, so spent most of my time at first slip, but honestly i'm just happy to be playing again!

They put up 250 odd in 40 overs and we just about crossed 200 in reply.
Bowled 3 very mixed overs, 0-21. Bowling off-spin for the first time, had their bat who ended up getting 100 edging behind but our keeper dropped it. Need to sort out my accuracy but spin it a pretty long way which had them in trouble.
Batted 4, got to 5 before walking straight past one from their spinner.

It's weird how having a poor game would usually have me fuming, but i'm really not bothered this season!

I play for a different team on Sundays who don't play league cricket. I think I'll just play for them for the remainder of the season. I bat at 3 and bowl a few overs each week. The wife will be very happy if I just play once at the weekend! After that I'll just see how I feel about next season before making any decisions.

Another game, another defeat.

Batted first, all out 136 in the 33rd over. Some really poor dismissals. I was 17* from 19, having taken on their spinner who took 4/22 from 8. I took him for 14 of them, and he bowled five wides trying to spear one at my leg stump. Ended up being brought on with 25 needed by the opo, we needed six wickets. Snicked off their offie, but ended up going for a couple of boundaries, one a poor ball and one when we brought everyone in with two needed.

Captaining the academy team on Monday, so looking forward to that.

If you only bat then it’s top six or move clubs. Really is that simple as we are amateurs and pay to play and it’s supposed to be fun. Pick another side where you will get to bat top six week in week out and just enjoy it

Played against a newly formed Indian team today in our last league match which was bizarre to say the least. It started with them turning up with 13 and having two sub fielders, and ended with us winning by about 170 runs.

We won the toss and batted and the new ball was swinging massively with grey skies overhead, made my way to 14 before chipping one to short cover that i was about 3 weeks early on. We looked in trouble at 40-4 before our skipper and number 7 got us to 200-ish inside our 40. (Their side appealed for absolutely everything including a perfect forward defence which was superb, thankfully they weren't arsey about getting turned down every time for awful appeals!)

This was followed up by the best spell of bowling i've ever seen, as our left arm opener ripped through them with figures of 8-14 as we skittled them for 32. The ball was hooping everywhere and he finished with a hat-trick. Their entire line up was the epitome of '6 or out' as they were having massive swings at everything which was a interesting tactic given the ball was swinging more than i've ever seen it before!

They looked a reasonable side skill wise, but as they've not played any organised cricket before, they had some dubious field placings to say the least. I opened the batting, they had a fly slip, nobody in the cordon and 2 sweepers out first ball. This then progressed to mid on/off going back before i'd played a decent shot! Was done by 3:30 and spent a good few hours on the beer afterwards

Was this the team that brings a live parrot along to each match? This is a new team in our midweek league that have had some odd results. In a T16 friendly we had them around 60-5 off 8 chasing 150-ish and then their captain hit around 50 off the last 5 overs to win with 2 balls to go - galling. The next day they played our midweek 1s and lost by 10 wickets. Their final match another of their players got 102* off 48 balls to win by 100 runs in a 16 over match. Guess it all depends who shows up on the night... Impressive first season tho'
