Mo Amir retires from International Cricket

No surprise this.

Feels like the whole situation has been badly managed from both sides?

Cheat. Good

Wasn’t the same player anyway . I’m sure some white ball team will pay him handsomely for 4 overs a time

There are. Match fixing is vastly different though to say sandpapering a ball (of course you could argue any cheating should instantly get kicked from the game). You would stamp out cheating pretty quick as the consequences would be devestating for someone .. raising the risk level etc.

Amir has and will earn mega money even though he cheated so he’s not really going to be deterrent to someone else cheating

Made a mistake at a very young age whilst very immature. As he said it ruined his career and he’s right. Shame as he bowled some seeds.

Given they are supposed to be professionals and are available all day every day, they could have spent every afternoon teaching young players the rights and wrongs if we are going to pretend they don’t know right from wrong. Either way, you can’t and should never let cheating go without severe punishment.. otherwise it’ll keep happening as the ‘risk/reward’ is worth it . I mean, look at speeding ... pretend otherwise but 99% of people speed.. why?? Becuase they decide the risk to reward is worth it. If you knew getting caught meant losing your licence I bet speeds would drop overnight etc

It is a shame though, he could have been very good based on his pre ban bowling.

Think it's difficult to place the bulk of the blame on his shoulders. Young guy who had presumably never been exposed to the kind of cash that was being thrown about, still relatively new to the elite level environment and he's approached by two of the most experienced players - including the skipper. Takes a pretty strong person to say no outright given the circumstances.

Real shame as when he broke into the Pakistan team he looked like he had all the attributes to be one of their all time great bowlers.

As has been said, don't think he'll struggle to find teams looking for a white ball gun bowler with his skillset.

Oh god it was more the other two players and how ever
Many back room staff to blame more but still.. if you do the crime, do the time. Sadly you can’t discriminate if you want to really stamp it out.

I don’t think national boards or the ICC really care as long as the money rolls in.

Yeah, someone will gladly fill his pockets as a gun for hire

He was very exciting to watch in tests, really exciting with his pace and movement

Can't even think of what was going through the lads mind when he went through with this - 2 of the senior players tell you to do something, your captain and the bowler you are looking to emulate. I have no idea what the team culture is like, or what his financial situation was. The guy is literally a day older than me, he would not have had the chance to mature by then. I have no doubt that he regretted doing this, and I feel that he was a very very promising talent. Will always be sad over this incident, and as Adie said, he just wasn't the same player/anywhere near how promising he was when he came back. You can see why Holding was crying over this

It’s a crying shame, the lad had such potential. He was a joy to watch in test cricket(pre ban). Can’t ever not say that

Totally agree, he knew exactly what he was doing and in my opinion should never have been allowed to play again.

I think Amir was discussed just a couple of weeks ago and this situation was pretty predictable.Pakistan selection and who plays has always been a hot bed of players being unhappy and then being brought back, and some of them clearly better than the rest being cut off way too early. I think Mohammed Yousef was one I can think of, outstanding player suddenly cast out with no reasoning.

Amir went downhill after the Lords match and was never really had the same impact, he was deadly in our conditions for a while, then injury, fallout, loss of pace etc etc.
As far as being a cheat goes, he will always be one, however I don't share some of the opinions on here that the 3 of them get tarred with the same brush.

Butt was the captain I understand from a wealthy background,Asif the experienced player who would of had influence, Amir from what I have been told by Pakistani friends was from a poor background. All of this info may not mean much to many but I think myself if one of them got another chance of a career it would of been Amir.It turned out that way as Butt and Asif despite trying were never brought back.

I would guess if he could settle in England a County career may await in one of the areas of high Asian population. He would still be a star over here and able to earn a decent living, as well as the short form games worldwide.

Ultimately I think it's a bit sad he will never have the career with Pakistan some thought he might have.

Wow! He could've been so much more. It's a real shame.

Regarding the match fixing scandal, he was young and naive and was coerced in that scheme by his skipper. It is hard to say 'no' to your skipper when you are that young and gullible. It is just hard to say 'no' to senior players. International level cricket requires a great deal of mentoring of new/junior talent by senior players. Knowledge and expertise is passed down like a chain that stretches decades back in time.  That scandal broke that chain for Pakistan cricket. Misbah had to step-up/step-in and, basically, remained a "crisis" manager thru his career. Other international teams flourished because their chains of transition remained intact. Salman Butt was an exceptional left handed opener, Asif was an amazing bowler with lot to teach. That match fixing scandal didn't just set back Amir's career, it setback Pakistan cricket by at least 10 years.
