We played away to Timsbury yesterday despite the weather. Lost the toss and was put in. It rained for probably 30 of our 45 overs but never came off. We amassed 217 all out, I got 31* off 25 at the end batting at 7.

Timsbury never got going and ended up 88-7 off 32.2 - again with most of the innings being rained on until a heavy downpour ended the game. I’ve never played a game where 70% of it was in rain.

Still a win for us and playing a Frenchay side next week who have bowled both oppos they’ve played for sub 100.

We played yesterday, and TBH I have never played in such a strange game in my life, especially as captain.

It all started at around 10.15 when I get a call from oppo skipper saying they didn't cover the wicket on Thursday and the rain got on it and it's still wet despite being covered since! They are unsure whether to play etc etc... I say our lads have already left so we're coming over let's see how it is.

Get there the wicket is wet but not unplayable, an old school sticky dog basically. After lots of talk with the umpires and their skipper, a wet outfield and rain in the air, we decided to reduce to 35 overs and a 1.30pm start. By this time their skipper has told me they have 5 guys that don't want to play!! I said I have 11 that do so we have an issue then.

I lose the toss and we are batting, the track plays as expected it is impossible to drive on if ball is bowled in the right area, but they bowl enough bad balls for us to get to 196-8 (I swept my way to 26 before holing out to square leg). A very good score on that wicket I though.

Then we bowled really well at the start, I got a legside stumping 3rd ball, we picked up another couple of wickets and they were behind the rate quickly. This all happened during constant rain and them moaning about playing etc... when the oppo are 66-4 needing 12's we come off for rain, and I think we'll that's it we've been screwed!

But somehow it stops, sun comes out and we get back out there, we take another wicket, 79-5, they still need 12's. Then came one of the most ridiculous innings I have seen in the 30 years I have been playing cricket.

The number 7 came out and from ball 1 timed it off any length like no-one had been able to all day, put 7 balls out the ground, to score a match winning 65* off 32 balls!!!! Some of the cleanest striking I have seen. While the number 6 sensibly gave him the strike and got a run a ball 50 himself. They put on 120 and won it with an over to spare.

While for 90% of the day the oppo didn't want to play at all and were moaning about the whether, I walked off the ground completely shell shocked having lost. The bloke who scored those runs has only ever scored 1 other 50 in his life..... so just goes to show there is hope for everyone!

I suspect the name in the scorebook and the name on his birth certificate may not necessarily score the same amount of points in Scrabble.

Heard a funny story yesterday regarding our Sunday friendly fixture from the previous weekend which I watched for a couple of hours but didn't play in.

I arrived at the backend of the first (opposition) innings and noticed one the umpires wearing black trousers and a proper umpires coat so thought they had brought their own umpire. Quick turnaround at innings break and this guy walks out again and no-one is complaining as it's hard enough to get one of our lot to umpire. However at the end of the game, the umpire asks for his fee which confuses our skipper and it's then discovered he has been umpiring the wrong match. Both skippers feel terrible for the guy (who apparently had done both ends for the entire match !!!) so decide to have a whip round as a "thank you" but once they finished collecting, the poor chap had already left.

Played at Hovingham in North Yorkshire this afternoon, a beautiful ground and even had a friend (Yorkshire Premier League player whose match was called off late last night) asking if he could come on-loan as he had never played there. Unfortunately I had to decline his offer as it would be classed as strengthening the side but as it happens our 1st XI match was called off this morning so we had enough players anyhow.

Match started well for me taking a catch at gully off our quick bowler. First catch for ages, it came at a nice height and to my right (I am hopeless with chances to my left).

However my bowling came in for some tap, mostly from a U13 Yorkshire player who developed a very annoying habit of carting me behind square to a very short leg side boundary. In fairness I kept feeding him straight deliveries as I thought he's got to miss one sometime but that didn't prove to be the case.

Our batting didn't get off to the best start but one of our 1st XI players hit a quick-fire 50 before being adjudged LBW. We then decided a losing draw was the best option and I dropped anchor when I went in and was slowly seeing us through the overs. Unfortunately a juicy wide long hop was too tempting an invitation to turn down and for the second league game running, I ended up miss-hitting a rank bad ball straight to a fielder. Very frustrating as I feel really good at the crease but maybe I am trying to hit the ball too hard and losing my shape?

A loss looked inevitable as I departed 9 wickets down but the last pair managed to bat out the last 10 overs undefeated and took us over 100 to over for our first batting point of the season.

Rained off again - thats 3 out of 4 league games off for both our teams. My 14 year old was due to play 2's for first time last two weeks and is getting very frustrated!

I'm still not playing due to back so one silver lining is I am not actually missing any cricket but so depressing this weather

Just about recovered from a farcical game yesterday.

We arrive at the ground the opposition are hiring, only to find out that only their skipper was there. We tossed up and chose to bowl on the greenest, wettest track I’ve ever seen. They all waited in the car park as they let the groundsman set up on his own. Then they wondered out to bat 15 minutes after the start time.

On a track that 100 would have been a good score on we bowled poorly and let them get 140. Though this could have been a lot less had it not been for some of the worst cheating I’ve ever seen on a cricket field. We had one of their players run out by at least 2 yards. I’m talking the kind where the bails are off before he’s even in the same postcode, and yet it was given not out. After about 2 minutes of back and forth he still didn’t walk. We then got a wicket off a full toss (about shin height) and they waited until I’d caught it to signal a no ball. Though the funniest one was a bloke getting hit infront of all 3 but not being given. Our keeper rarely appeals and is the first one to say “nah lads, it was a little leg side” etc and even he said it was stone dead.

Towards the back end of the innings we had the same guy run out again which they finally gave. One of our players gave him a send off which was probably unnecessary. This prompted a full scale pitch invasion by their side to argue about the games atmosphere.

After plenty of rain at tea on an uncovered track we finally went to bat and were all out for 50. Certainly wasn’t enjoyable when a ball pitches in the same place and one goes past your ear, the next one almost bounced twice. It just highlighted how poorly we bowled.

The best part of tea however, was when I asked what the point of cheating was, only to be told by one of their players “well if we gave every decision like that we would be out cheaply!” As if being out cheaply was justification for cheating.

That’s the first time (and hopefully last) I have ever called somebody a cheat in 20 years of playing all kinds of sport. We all feel a bit miffed when you don’t get LBW’s off the other team, however this kind of blatant cheating ruined what should have been a good game.

Some people think getting an incorrect decision is unlucky, some think it’s the ineptitude of the umpires. However, in my view most of the time it’s blatant cheating. I have zero interest in playing for or against sides that feel the need to win at all costs, and if we come across those sides on a Saturday or Sunday we’ll make sure they don’t ever get invited back. There’s no need for it, other than to feed their insecurities.

sad to say.. do you get many fixtures ?? Most sat sides I see really will be utterly rude , aggressive and call it 'being competitive' .. They seem to think sport is licence to act in a way you wouldn't at work or just with a random person in the street.

Still, this sounds like games the 2/3's get at least once a month or two per season. Come back saying how x cheated or y isn't a pleasant team to play due to the verbals etc

Luckily we have a full fixture list. We are fortunate to have quite a nice ground, so there’s no shortage of clubs wanting to play us. I don’t play Saturdays anymore, and that’s where the really objectionable behaviour is, but we still encounter the odd Sunday friendly side who act like it’s the 5th and deciding match in an ashes series. It’s really pathetic behaviour. Sometimes it’s just one or two of the XI, sometimes it’s the whole side. On Tuesday we are playing one of the most obnoxious sides I’ve ever seen, in a T20 cup match… it will be interesting!

Rained off again, third week in a row. Don't remember that ever happening before. Joined the lads at the club and drank all afternoon instead!  :D

Had a friendly today. Won by 30 odd runs.

Came in a bit lower at 5 today and hit 40 not out from about 12 overs including a partnership of 73 off the last 10 overs. Finished on 170-ish

Even though we mainly bowled out colts & Sunday players they never really got near it. Personally bowled 3 overs for 15, had 2 drops in that spell!

Lovely game, 4 LBWS given and nobody cheated. Much better experience than yesterday

Same here, we've been touring the grounds the last 3 weeks (post-breakfast of course) - spent a pleasant Saturday getting sloshed watching Bath. The only downside is both the 1s and 2s have now agreed we've preferred the last 3 weeks to actually playing the sport...

hoping by season isnt over before its begun, my calf 'popped' while running between the wickets yesterday and cannot put weight on it today.

annoying as finally found some timing with that bat and got a few overs under my belt

Even more annoying is playing in the rain for 4 weeks then get injured the week it looks like the suns coming out
