Bit short on runs I think but there was a hint of turn for Lyon who bowled very well, he is so underrated by us England fans.

It�s gun barrel straight for the seamers but Root played one of his best innings IMO. His only weakness seems against high pace but that�s undone even the great players of the past maybe except Gooch.

Did the Aussies rope a dope and just let us slog ourselves out to an under par score?
OR
For the first time in my memory of Ashes cricket did the Aussies just take a backward step???
Really defensive, really early, dropping catches & then their openers looked spooked too!!!
No idea who�s on top till both sides have batted

I think there is a world of nuance to the four sessions now complete. England's score was probably 50-100 under "par" if we were prepared to grind for five sessions, but as has previously been established, we don't have a line up that can necessarily grind runs out consistently, and there has already been sign that this will not be a road for five days. They will be happy that a statement was made, and Australia have definitely seemed spooked - not so much at the start of the day, I think that was a long held plan, but as the game went on. And Scott Boland might find himself hit out of the series pretty soon...

Great innings from Uzzie it�s just a shame and yes I�m a Foakes fan that both him and YB cannot play in the same team because missed chances will cost us and Foakes takes these misses

Moeen unlucky. Thought he bowled really well with attacking fields while perhaps tiring as the day went on. What a ball to get Green - but then I suppose his drift and turn have never been in doubt.

Cancelled out his runs with his two misses but we know his keeping isn�t a patch on Foakes but his attacking batting style is what they want let�s hope they don�t prove to costly

Yep, we could. We could have also been 300 all out. Foakes could also not have taken those chances too. I've never said Bairstow is as good a keeper, that's not a debate. Just feel he adds more with the bat and maybe sometimes that's the trade off. Not sure those chances will ultimately cost us, or if not scoring enough runs in ideal conditions on a flat track on day 1 will. If we lose, no doubt everyone on here will point to those chances missed and it would be understandable, but ultimately there are always other factors too.
