England v Windies
« on: July 07, 2024, 09:04:21 AM »

Any opinions on a staring line-up for Weds game - not sure the weather's up to much, but would still like to see a spinner included?

Also is Stokes going in as the 4th seamer?

I'm guessing -

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Woakes
Bashir
Atkinson
Anderson

Would rather see another young pacer in rather than Woakes, but that would leave a rather terrible tail!

Bashir would be batting below Atkinson surely but otherwise I like that side.

I'd be surprised if Bashir plays.

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Stokes
Smith
Laurence
Woakes
Potts
Anderson

Given the weather that seems more logical with Root to bowl spin if needed but seeing as most likely to be under covers for the next 2 days my guess it forth day patrons won’t see much cricket regardless of who wins

I was at an event at Lords last Friday (5th July) and they have pre-sold over 6000 seats for day 5!!!!

I think that's quite optimistic 🤣🤣

That is mad.
How will lords manage the need for Jimmy to finish with a 5 for and for a road to get the game to day five!??

In recent years all England teams have had the feeling of hunch picks, this one more so than most.  Is Smith really a better keeper, or batsman, than Robinson?  Is Atkinson really international class?  Is the fact that Bashir can't get a game for his county telling noone anything?

Chances are, this being a callow West Indies side, two out of three of them will have decent games - Smith after all is long term international class even if a questionable pick.  It will make for an interesting watch.

In other news...how precisely are we going to cope without Jimmy?  I'm amazed they have fobbed him off so quick rather than gradually transferring selection.

I sort of agree.

Jimmy has only been good in the first innings for a while though. I think his time has come.

Atkinson I am not sure about.
On form Jordan Clark is miles ahead of Woakes now, but I am very happy for Surrey to keep him thanks. Woakes is a Lords specialist as far as I can tell. But he is also very experienced..

Smith is a future 3 format international and is incredible. As a batter. He is being shoehorned into the team to get him game time. No one seriously thinks he is a better keeper than Foakes, Ollie Robinson or a host of other county keepers.

Bashir I think we should be picking. He is a talented bright bowler and needs game time.

For me you pick two of Bashir, Atkinson and Smith, not all three. I would have picked Potts as I love how he just keeps coming in and he will be a solid 8 in time.

I agree Anderson probably isn't making the Ashes in 18 months time, and I am not saying I would keep him beyond the end of the season; but on the other hand, we know Woakes is an England only selection, and they have clearly decided that the other Ollie Robinson is not getting the message on fitness.  Appreciate that Wood will come in later in the Summer, but with Fisher, Tongue, Overton and Mahmood injured it does leave a light selection of options from Test Two.

Atkinson is an odd one - having seen what he could do on a lively Scarbados deck a couple of years ago, I totally agree he is an exciting prospect.  But again, and tellingly, he is an exciting prospect who does not get in Surrey's best team.

And Smith...whilst I almost agree with your Brown Tinted view of his potential, the same could reasonably be said of the other actual keepers...
