I  have a question
"Where do GM see themselves in 5 years time?"
When asking this question im considering the rapid demise of Slazenger as a brand, Gray Nics outsourcing to India and the rise of Adidas, Puma and inevitably Nike. The cricket market is changing, where does GM fit into it?

Excellent question.

About 5 years ago we sat down and considered the future. There were siren calls to look at moving production to India. We would be no strangers to that, as it happens, as back in 1999, we moved the Unicorn dart manufacturing business - that my Grandpa started - to China. That was the right move for Unicorn, India is not the right move for GM as so many other brands have found.

What we decided to do is make better bats. Bats that you would aspire to. Bats that feel better, play better, look better than anything we or anyone else had made before.

So we set about a research project in conjunction with a firm who are world leaders  in wood technology. We learned a lot and thought a lot.

Coming out of the research were some radical new ideas in timber conditioning, pressing and manufacture which are now possible with the latest technology. We looked at the costs, swallowed hard, had a stiff Scotch (Dalmore 12 as you ask) and DXM was born.

The GM factory in Nottingham is the most advanced in the World bar none. It blends seamlessly the very latest machining technology with the hundreds of years of collective skill and craftsmanship that our fantastic staff have accrued. They work with us in our own factory. Ask other substantial brands for a factory tour and there will be an embarrassed silence.

I believe we are making the finest bats in the World. We shall continue to innovate and have the infrastructure to design and manufacture in our own factory, under our own control, even better bats. We shall continue to focus on the needs of the cricketer. We shall continue manufacturing English Willow bats and will not badge the output from an OEM factory.

In my view, the bats badged Adi, Puma for example are inconsistent and average at best. They are not the product led model that we choose. The focus of the mega brands who have no real heritage in cricket is on developing their brands generally around the World, but very much driven by emerging India at the moment. Whether average product can successfully underpin brand equity in the long term would be a concern.

GM choose outstanding product to drive the brand forward. Where will we be in 5 years time? Truth is, that's a long way off but if I had to pick some words : Quality. Innovation. Performance. Deliver. Support.

Hope that helps!

Kind regards

Edward

Thanks for your answer Edward - was good to meet you all and nice that you showed a few of us your operation at GM!

Of course, we all now realise that you are posting in a flurry, so that you can quickly get up to 50 posts, and are therefore eligible to sell some of your older bats on the forum! Don't try to deny it!  ;)

It's a fair cop Guv!

Please can you make Jon Trott's profile available to the public?

And

What bat do you use Edward?

:)

Maybe  8)

And

...um, er, awkward pause, I don't! Schoolboy only cricketer, my job is the business of cricket. Don't fear however, we have plenty of saddos on the staff..

Edward great to have you here, not sure if this is a good question or not but is there a much of difference between a Icon LE and what pro use? I mean is there a difference in quality between offshelf Icon LE's quality (cleft, willow, handle etc) compare to pro bats?

Also what shape does Umar Akmal use? Is it actual Flare?

Thanks

Innovation is always at the forefront in any market i suppose - tough to do sometimes with a lump of wood, but this is where the best will really shine through......the average and the indifferent will struggle and inevitably peter out.

It really doesnt take much effort (an hour of your time answering questions) to build up a good rapport with a large cricketing communnity, so take a bow and pat that back of yours - i for one definitely look upon GM more favourably than any other large scale brand ( it's still nice to support your local batmaker though!). I'll echo sentiments already mentioned on this thread, that the interaction between large cricket brands and consumer rarely occurs, when it does the result is largely positive for both parties. No reason why GM couldnt take out a £15 a month sponsorship fee and gain access to a receptive cricketing market, with more money than sense and the largest known concentration of bat hoarders, obsessives and self pronounced willow wizards known to man.
But seriously, what is stopping GM being the first large brand to really start engaging with us proletariat....break down the bourgeois barriers :D

fantastic to have access to Edward and I'm certainly one who would be 'all GM' having been a slaz man my whole life.  Clearly GM's technology and more importantly end product is market leading, the results of the prior corporate strategy formulation makes it very easy to believe in the brand.

I've posted a couple of times querying various 'icon' bats being used by Trott and Ten Dos, only out of interest, not ridicule.  Golf companies do this commonplace, the clubs in the bag of a pro do not resemble the retail offerings (other than cosmetically) and often arent even manufactured in the same place, but most people wouldnt know/care to know this.

If I had a suggestion, without obviously understanding the feasability, and assuming the profile deravations made for pros are CAD, perhaps a limited run (100?) could be made and labled as 'GM custom prototype' for example for Trotts bat, surely from a marketing perspective these would command a premium even to the LE bats? A good way to test the market for product development.  if its at all relevant as a case study, the hard core golf market go nuts for anything that is a tour issue prototype.

Anyway, keep up the great work GM.

Thanks for the great answers and openness.  I have changed my mind to such an extent that I orxered a Luna to try and find out how much GM bats have changed.  Coming back to the topic of older bats, whatever happened to the Diamond?  It was the only GM bat I ever got on with and seemed innovative at the time.  I know a number of us look out for them on ebay all the time.

Must admit this has made me want to try GM now. Not had one for a few years but remember liking it.

Would love a bash with a Luna

Edward - Does the opportunity to visit ever arise? I know that a couple of the chaps from here such as Pete have been down before

I always found that the Cannon was an enormous plank, and I never found the Purist much better. I loved my Diamond!

I never really got on with the Maestro either. Lots of people though it was brilliant, but I preferred the GN Dynadrive at around the same time.
