Title: Who has the lightest pads
Post by: uknsaunders on October 04, 2010, 03:39:03 PM
Cricket season over and another waste of time bragging rights competition. Here's my effort on the pad front, some Puma Extreme 4000, obviously to big for my stubby legs:-

However, they weigh in at 495grams each:-

Can anyone beat this?

and make sure you strap the buckles up please, no cheating trying to get the weight down!

We have 28 weeks until the start of next season, plenty of time to go through gloves, helmets, thigh pads (I will weigh my morrant dalek ones for that!). I'm thinking of getting small new youth pads for my midget legs, so it will give me some good pointers!

Does anyone actually own morrant supalites? Otherwise I'm still claiming the lightest :-)

Anything from the other brands that comes close? Aswani Zero G must be close.

Bloody hell the Ayrtek Modern pads are heavy compared to those Pumas, always thought ayrtek ones were light!
Title: Re: Who has the lightest pads
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on October 04, 2010, 06:21:15 PM
The puma are a moulded pad and therefore don't have any PU on them which will make them alot lighter, lots of Indian brands will offer a one piece moulded pad such as these

I have a pair of the Morrant International pads which are super light although ive not got anything decent to weigh them on !

When you are several stone overweight you need every advantage you can get!

Helmet 705g

Gloves a surprising 313g
(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_blLLx3gm1k0/TKo9YHrthbI/AAAAAAAABtQ/38yb0-_h8q8/s640/2010-10-04%2021.45.37.jpg)

Thigh Guards including Box and undershorts 298g

Gives me a total of 495*2+705g+298g+313g = 2306g

Tendulkar uses Morrant, and uses his current pads for 10+ years. Sehwag uses SG Tests in Test matches and Morrants in ODIs

Just to add to the mix, the P2 legs I weighed above are an adult product.  We are launching a new P3 leg this year - picture below:

These new P3 legs weigh in as follows:

XXS (for those beginning with the hard ball) - 275g
XS (10-12 year olds) - 300g
S (12-15 - depending on height) - 320g
P2 M (adult) - 320g
Title: Re: Who has the lightest pads
Post by: Colesy on October 20, 2010, 10:25:29 PM
Philip could you put the weights of all of your pads up please, if that's not a problem.
Title: Re: Who has the lightest pads
Post by: Philip@Aero on October 21, 2010, 01:24:49 AM
Your wish is my command.

Weights of the batting legs are as follows:

- P3 XX-Small (for those beginning with the hard ball) - 275g
- P3 X-Small (10-12 year olds) - 300g
- P3 Small (12-15 - depending on height) - 320g
- P2 Medium (youth/adult) - 320g
- P1 Small (12-15 - depending on height) - 370g
- P1 Medium (youth/adult) - 520g
- P1 Large (6'+ adult) - 550g

Please note that because of the different shaped front and back legs on the P1, the weights for each leg are different.  In order to enable comparison on this forum I have averaged the front and back leg weights.  Those of you that may have seen postings by me on P1 weights in the past will note that the P1 has gone up in weight.  This is because we have put slightly heavier ultra-low rebound foam into the front leg of the white P1 meaning that they are probably the lowest rebounding pad (foam or traditional) on the market.  Coloured P1s are lighter and have a higher rebound based on the feedback we had from people that in limited over cricket they wanted the ball to rebound as far away from them as possible to maximise leg byes.

Weights of the P1 KPR keeping legs are:
- Medium - 235g
- Small - 225g

could do with a pair of them! My bat never gets to hit the ball :P
Title: Re: Who has the lightest pads
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on October 21, 2010, 08:34:47 AM
minimal bouncebackability :D

interesting to see that you have integrated mock canes and knee roll into the new pads Philip....was this soemthing you had feedback on from customers? umpires giving LBW as they couldnt judge the height the ball struck without the knee roll etc?
Title: Re: Who has the lightest pads
Post by: Philip@Aero on October 21, 2010, 09:22:11 AM
Nothing to do with umpires - wouldn't want to help them.   :D  I guess I shouldn't say that - my father was a 1st class umpire.

But a more traditional look was definitely something that people were looking for - hence we've reworked the P3.
Title: Re: Who has the lightest pads
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on October 21, 2010, 09:27:30 AM
yeh its about getting the balance between modern and traditional from the feedback we had on our pads when with CCC, same thing with the lids you'll never keep 100% of the market happy with one single product...would be bloody good if you could though :D

That's odd. This taken from the Aero website "Our first products arrived on the market in 2004 with the introduction of the ground breaking leg , chest and lower body protectors ("Strippers")."

I would guess they're not "the very same" then.

I think the similarity to the p3's is the size ( slim long length pads )  and the traditional knee rolls obvs not the design concept of the P1 or P2's. I doubt Mr Grace's pads were that lightweight....

From memory, that Ultralite weight is just the shell of the pad and does not include the comfort liner (but I'm not 100% sure of that).

Just weighed my GN Nitro Players pads, they are 663g each.

When i got them i thought they were the lightest pads ever, so seeing how much other pairs are i'm rather disappointed! :(

Salix Pod Black Gloves weigh in at 171g each. Man i love those gloves.  :)

Tell you what, I might be a major contender for lightest overall kit - my aero P1 gloves weigh but 129 grams. So my pads & gloves combo is only 440g.

And yet I still get ran out 73.23% of the time...

Lol! I'm glad to say I bear no resemblance to the Hypnotoad. I think it's the fact that Aero's clever marketing ploys which makes me think that I run faster, and so I go for runs that are clearly not there but I think they are because I have aero gear on, and so am indestructible to be run out. Better get some mahusive heavyweight cane pads to make me only run when it's extremely easy :-[

This might sound a bit daft but does anyone have any pictures of the morrant ultralites? I'm quite tempted by these as they seem to get rave reviews but just want to see what they look like properly, pics on websites just never look as good as the ones people take of their own kit.

Been looking round at pads for ages and although I like the look of lots of pads including kook recoil and GM original LE I do like the sound of the morrants as they're so light.

Cheers

Puma Kinetic 5000 a little too small for me unfortunately, so passing them on to a team mate.

I couldn't resist any longer, just ordered some of the morrants international ultralites. If you use code AOC2011 you get free delivery so just under £80 in total. Looking forward to them arriving and I hope they're as good as everyone says.

I've now bought a redback paradox, new gloves, new pads and other stuff since joining the forum 6 months ago and also emailed Kieron yesterday to buy a bulldog basher - I'd love an Ayrtek helmet too but might need to wait a bit to let my wallet recover.

Weighed the 909 D3O pads that I got cheap from Sports Direct in the sale. They are not light pads and tip the scales at 909g (okay 900, but I thought it was a nice bit of alliteration). This is 50% heavier than my Hunts County Triumph bads, but being hit by the ball at 70mph, they definitely offer more protection, and are lighter than the straight 909s.

There is no way that the Morrants weigh 397 grams.

They weigh in at 520 grams. The only way you can get them lighter than that is to remove all inserts, thus making them unwearable.

GM RSBs weigh in at 523 grams.

I am sceptical about the Aswani zero g pads being 450 too.

They are the EXACT same pads as the Morrant's Super Ultralite moulded pads:

http://www.morrant.com/Portals/1/product/images/prd%7B992FD152-0E30-40C5-985C-88B688D50BB9%7D.jpg

http://www.aswanicricket.co.uk/ekmps/shops/aswanicricket/images/aswani-cricket-zero-g-junior-batting-pads-2364-p.jpg

As the pictures prove, they are identical pads with different decals.

I own the Morrant variety and they weigh in at around 600grams.

How can the Aswani ones be 150 grams lighter?

I'm pretty sure the Puma Pulses won't be featuring high up in this list of very light pads as they are around 680g per pad. Having said that, I'd happily kick a Steven Finn 93mph ball away with them as I'm certain you wouldn't feel it. Might need a towel stuffed down the back of the Morrant Int. Ultralites for the same effect!

Having said that, they feel significantly lighter than the GM 909 D3O pads I have, which are 50% heavier.

Any changes here?

The new Gray Nics Maverick and Powerbow pads look seriously light for a traditionally styled pad.
Would be nice to have a comparison of some of the boutique pad's weights on here if trying to make a decision.

I am due to new pads, so far I feel like Morrant makes the best one with snug fit..but I am open to suggestions.  Also, any website that sells morrant for less than $200?

Thanks in advance!

Would be interesting to know the weight of these seeing as here near as much a copy of the aswani zero g (which is probably a copy of something else)

This puma looks like the Indian version of Morrant pad, which I current have but they are little stiff and bulky.

I want light pads put nobody seems to mention THIN pads! This seems more important to me, nobody's not strong enough to run with 0.6kg on each shin, though lighter is nicer, for feeling, I think having less volume is more important.

The aero ones look perfect but I've never spotten anywhere actually selling them!

Try Sports Direct, they have some paper thin Slazenger ones in almost every store, they're really cheap and there's no way they'll weigh much either.
Protection wasn't a consideration, was it?  ;)

You joke but that might actually be worth trying, I don't face 80mph bowling so it's never going to hurt THAT much is it? Or is it?
