Just found it at the club someone has dumped it and it's a classic plus had quite a beefy profile for an older bat

The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

Right, this one is one of the all time classic bats that this section was designed for. Yes, at long last, here we have the Gray Nicolls Dynadrive. This one is a fair few years old, but in good condition, and maintaining an excellent middle when bounced off a mallet. She is a SH and picks up around 2lb 9oz, although I'm not really sure of her weight. From the tie shot you can probably see the GM Luna's origins.... Or maybe that's just me.

This one has reasonable grains on the face, but given the variety of brandings of them over the years, I'm not really sure what the "Special" was, apart from a late-in-life edition. If I remember correctly, the 1000 in the early range was the Grade 1 bat. This bat (well not strictly this one, more one like this, a Dynadrive Special) was one of my favourite bats.

Legendary as she is, I don't think she needs any more introductions, and I'm also aware that this is the only bat that I've given a gender to...  :-[

For your enjoyment, and I wish it was a Dynadrive 2012 rather than a Scoop 2012...

So why does having two scoops in the back mean that the bat has a better middle?

It just means that it has a better middle than the Scoop....

Ah right, I guess because there is still wood behind the middle??

Yes. It's very similar to the Luna or Pellara in principle. You still have a spine that provides wood for the middle with thicker edges that extend further towards the middle of the bat.

The reality is that the concaving you see on modern bats uses this exact same approach.

The incorrectly stickered GN100 is probably a crusader based on shape, so would be early seventies...

Back-to-back, as it were... Even uses similar coloured bands around the top!

Adding further to the list, I have recently acquired this less than common specimen.

This is the Stuart Surridge Contour, a bat that I wouldn't be surprised to be related to the the Turbo, bu tI'm not sure whether it is a predecessor or a descendant. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. This specimen says on the sticker "A lighter weight bat with heavyweight power from the unique curved back".

In this particular version, I suspect that the power all comes from the weight. When I picked it up I thought it was 2lb 13 or 14 oz. On the scales it comes in at a whopping 3lb. There isn't a lot of wood there for the weight, which is why i am inclined to believe that it is a predecessor to the Turbo.

As you can see in the pictures, it is effectively the opposite of the concaving we have now, with a curved back and no clear spine. I've no idea when it was designed, but I'm guessing early to mid-eighties. It states that it is a Supreme model, which I guess is probably a mid-range willow, and it has been heavily oiled... I think I remember the sports shop when I was at school having one, but I can't be sure, and that would be late eighties.

With the mallet, it doesn't seem to rebound all that specially, and wielding it, one wonders how you might get the ball off the square, without excellent timing, but I've found that with the Turbo as well.

So here we go, some pictures of a rarely seen bat.

Refurbing a GN Phoenix at the moment and although it's not especially old, very similar to the Dynadrive

God time that looks like it should be about 2'6! Actually like the shape though.

I'll be sticking up pics of out next to a more current bat at 2lb 15oz shortly. Very interesting comparison...

Played against a guy with a Slaz WG shoulderless job on Saturday - circa 1983 apparently. Tiny profile though!
