Bopara deserves his place in the team on current form.  Averaged over 50 at better than a run a ball in ODIs in 2013 and took his wickets at a better average and economy rate than both Broad and Bresnan.

A nice little 101* vs Ireland helps with that average...

i think you can throw averages out of the window on current players form, we need to pick players that are capable of scoring runs and taking wickets.

Cook looks a spent force to me and needs to step aside and get himself ready for the summer with india and Sri lanka. Plenty of other options on the bench to get in instead of him as hes woefully out of form as is Root.

Jordan was a positive in this game, Rankin IMO will never be anything better than an above average county bowler that troubles the county circuit batsmen. Bresnan has had his time and its time to look at alternative options beyond him now in ODI format.

I thought Jordan was unlucky and bowled very well

Let's look at the positives from this game:
Gary Ballance looked decent with the bat
Chris Jordan bowled well
Jos Buttlers batting (he should be up the order)
If I'm scraping the barrel Eoin Morgan did alright
And errrmmm.... That's it

cook is in shocking form right now..... rankin didnt bowl as well as he did in the last ODI again aussie back in september...

ballance, morgan bats well, buttler did alright, chris jordan was unlucky, bopara is a good allrounder and should keep in the squad.....

wondering why carberry or finn didnt play, just because finn 'confidence' is low, surely not playing him makes it worst...

Finn's ability can't be any worse than RAnkin's at the moment surely?

Did the post match interview have the usul bland, boring soundbites "we didn't quite hit our areas", "we were a bit short of the performance targets for this game"?

Utter bollox, management need to take this by the balls and put the best performing XI on the field, using the guys who's minds are in the right place.

Scraping the barrel, but guessing -

Carberry
Bell
Ballance
Morgan
Bopara
Buttler
Stokes
Broad
Jordan
Briggs
Finn

Looks a batter light, but what can you do?

Finn has major problems Jason.he is low on confidence, his run up is still being worked on but he has developed a kink in his action
Right now he needs specialist advise and work...probably back in england
You may well ask why he cannot get that with the england coaches
Angus frazer was at our league dinner last november and i think the best person finn needs is angus himself to help him
Im not a bowler but some have long run ups naturally

Avoided the forum as sky plused it.

Well batted finch
Well batted balance
Aus quite clear the better side and deserved a win, but I believe Clarke and finch should have won it in ones and humiliated England by winning by 8wickets.

Bell and Morgan should have gone on to score more
Jordan bowled well.
Root having best figures shows we needed an actual spinner not part time.

Cook is an out of form test player. He should in no where near the odi team.
Cook is a test captain that just got battered, he should be no where near the odi captaincy, his lack of attacking mentality cost us, why take a slip out in the 6over? He needs dropping and sending home. You are no good to us.

Root seemed to think he was playing in white, and didn't do a great job of that,
We have an awfully selected side
Why did we bat the entire innings as if we was keeping wickets for the last ten overs and then never ever tee off?

Why is pietersen always dropped from odi's? Yet when he's aid he didn't want to play Odis only test and t20s there was uproar in the England camp and media? Makes no sense!

why is Giles near this side? If flower needs to go, Giles needs to go with him.

I can see this odi and t20 being 8-0 to aus.

I've read a bit of stuff on here about how good Joe Root could/will be in the future. After watching him this summer and that last painful half hour I have no confidence at all in the kid. Scratching around for 20 balls and then wasting the one review when he was clearly out, reminds me of Watson. Terrible to watch at the moment and I think needs what happened to Clarke when he was dropped from the squad altogether. Looks out of his depth.

hmmmm snicko suggests he hit it, so was right to review in theory just unlucky it didn't show up on hotspot. But your in a far better position to judge someone's batting ability than anyone else so fair enough

Buttler has form batting top 4 in the big bash why is he batting at 8? Bloody annoys me.

Because its a longer format of the game, whats his experience and form like batting at 4 in 50 over stuff?

And incidentally I think his last t20 knock he made 0 from 2 balls, good form???

Well just watched it without reading anything..

Joe Root is out of his depth i feel sorry for him now he is in the spiral of form.

Sorry if you like him he has not got the game presently and i susect anybody who rates him currently is a Yorkshire person he just about stiffled the whole innings.

Ballance looked decent and a good prospect, Bell did what Bell does get a semi decent total then buffs it.

Buttler and Morgan added impetus but i would like England to think out of the Box batting wise it was one of them yeah lets pat our self on the back we got 250 plus.

Australia Well Fich showed what a class act he is in limited overs cricket be it 20 or 50 overs i have seen enough of him both on Tv and i got to watch him live a few times when i was down under a good talent who needed the penny to drop a world class limited overs batsman.

I do not rate Doherty but he did a great job we seem to be making the average look good but fair play to him Coulter Nile flatter to deceive, decent but not anything special and i have seen a fair bit of him.

Overall a very ordinary performance one which we where comfortably stuffed to be honest but it becoming boring moaning so come on England...

Currently a state side would beat England in any format..

Give Root a rest let him discover his game too much too early for the Great hope

He had a 60 odd and a 49 in the big bash. I didn't say he should bat top 4, he should be earlier that 8 surely everyone thinks that...C'mon

I'm going off form in the middle, runs in any format is form.

And his List A average is 52 batting top 6. Complete waste at 8.

I want England to be inventive lets get some real impetus early on lets get a decent pinch hitter out there or somebody who might look to hit a 4 at least...
