Regarding rolling, that's why there isn't much point rolling a dry hard deck. You only roll a wicket when you can press your thumb into the surface, a bit like plasticine.

Never heard that theory Nick. Why do they roll first class wickets all the time then ?

Good point lol, I suspect with such big squares there is always a track to prepare. As mentioned previously if you want the moisture coming to the surface, rolling is a way to do it. My old man who prepares minor county tracks, told me about the plasticine rule but maybe for first class squares it's different? I know a common groundsman joke is to leave the roller by the square and pretend it's been rolled to please the captain, even though it has little effect on a dry deck.

The ecb sent a document out last year giving guidelines that over rolling doesn't improve the deck,  once the ground is compacted and dry you get very little benefit.

Habit, player and umpire perceptions, rolling a dry deck will do significant harm!

Really ? Depends on the wicket structure and the weight of the roller

At recreational level with a heavy roller it will cause cracking, however rolling FC wickets with a 10 ton truck probably wouldn't change much such is the clay content.

i doubt there is any ground that uses a roller that heavy.

the heaviest you will come across is 3 tonnes. most will be around 2 tonnes.

also i don't think rolling a dry deck will do anything as the soil is to dry to consolidate so its just a waste of time and diesel.

Had my first game today in horrible windy wet weather. Scored 16 not out and took 2 catches keeping. Lost by one wicket in the end but it was a good tight match

So after it raining all morning till about 11am, we managed to play today. Pitch and square were covered and good drainage we put in a couple of years ago all worth the money. Only problem was outfield was cut yesterday with high setting on the mower so outfield was very slow.

We batted first in a 40 over game, solid start from myself and the fella that normally bats 6 but trying to get middle order players a bat so order was a bit backward today. We reached 70 at drinks which in a normal game was more like 100 if outfield etc. managed 168-5 off 40 overs. The bowled very well and it was quite warm this afternoon considering and pitch was zipping about and a very tall left arm opening bowler had it hoping round corners at times. I scored 37 before trying to get on with it with all wickets in hand in played past a straight one.

We bowled very well today with both opening bowlers missing, bowled them out for 138 in 36. No catches or stumpings and to be honest didn't feel I kept that well today. League starts next week so no doubt it will snow then lol

Well. After 48hrs of just rain in sheffield. And playing on a ground renowned for its dampness we didnt expect much. But they said wicket had been covered since thursday si asked us to travel.

On arrival the sun had arrived. Wicket needed some work with towels to soak up some water. But noth sides and umps happy to play.

We won the toss and chose to bowl. Expecting it to be a tad slow. We opened with 1nooener and first change bowler.
Carry and bounce were suprisingly good. And we bowled well pitch and bounce got better. So we bought our opening quicker on for the last 12 from the far end.
The couldnt cope with the kovement and bounce he was getting. And they struggled to 126 for 8 of 46overs.

We stupidly had the light roller applied. Which bought alot of water up.
First 109vers where trechorus, but our openers survived. But just before dribks we lost two quick wickets to be 42for 2.
2 more fell before 50, but the wicket had dried out bow and had nice even bounce, but theu had no bowlers to exploit it.
Our quickie turned hero with the bat, as he smashed 6 lovely straight 6s in a 30 ball 47not out to take us to a 5 wicket win with 9 overs remaining.

I did nothing. 46overs at slip, proved im not well/fit enough to play yet. I was asked to open. But didnt have the energy to even pad up. So had to decline. And thankfully wasnt needed.

4months ill with a ruptured spleen really is gonna cause me to struggle this year. Gutted.

managed 2 games today, whilst watching the various twitter feeds i manage this morning it seems all in sundry in bristol and surrounding areas had cancelled their games by 12.

as i was yet to don the new whites/boots i was hesitant to call it off until i has at ;east made it upto the ground (despite our groundsmans text and phonecall en route).

battle of the brave as we called it playable kicking off a T20 to start with so at least we had a goal of finishing a game. at tea we had chased down 137 and went back out in a T16 to get everyone else a knock/bowl.

nice to be back outdoors and scoring a few, even better to see a lad top to toe with BB kit on the oppo. ;)

The groundsman called our game off at 6pm Friday evening after a day of heavy rain. Don't blame him really.

I spent the day watching a game and drinking beer and you know what....

..... I bloody loved not playing!!

I'd personally class a 'proper' heavy roller at anything above a ton and half dependant on the rollers width. Disagree about it not causing cracking though, seem it first hand on my decks!

Rained off yesterday in Sheffield, weather on the day wasn't too bad but our pitch was waterlogged as no covers and poor drainage. Missed the last 3 net sessions so next week will be the first time I've picked up a bat in over a month so I'm expecting to be rubbish. I'm then off on holiday for two weeks so miss the next 2 games, pretty much means my season will only start in late May which isn't great.
