Couple of bats have received some repairs over the past couple of weeks

First up is my brothers Kookaburra Ricochet. Crack through the shoulder and delamination along the inside edge. Needed a couple of goes at this.

Shoulder cracked sorted first. Hoping the glue and some fibreglass tape should do the trick

Situation tonight looks like this, opened up the crack and filled it with glue. I will leave it clamped overnight and then start sanding it.

Finally got round to finishing off the sanding on the B3. A couple of before and after shots. Just need to give it a buff and some stickers, any chance of buying a set @thedoctor?

I had my bat refurbed professionally this year.
It didn't need major work, but there were the usual edge cracks and feathered toe from playing on a great home deck at my new club. Plus, the Hits Hard stickers are poo - they cracked and fell off and the chrome leftover looked like a KitKat wrapper.

I usually don't give my bats end of season tlc as the postage both ways ends up costing the same as the work. However, I tweeted to see if anyone local to me could help me out and it turns out Affinity Cricket are 10 mins down the road from me.

This is the bat mid season - I had filled the shoulder with super glue and you can probably not see, but the toe is a tad knacked. Also, stickers beginning to become involuntarily, uh, custom...

So, I dropped off the bat before Christmas and left him to it. It was finished in a few days, but for one reason or other I didn't pick it up until a about a week ago. It was good to chat - he's very passionate and it was interesting to hear about potential developments in his bat making. All in all, very approachable and, most importantly, the finish on the bat is great. Here are some blurry half light pictures of the remedied willow.

Nearly finished glueing the Kookaburra Ricochet, 3rd session this morning to fix the toe. Highly impressively damage considering the owner is bowler, I told him to use the middle more!

Delamination fixed

Toe crack can be seen going across the grain, this had been hidden by the toe guard.

Sorry to be a pain but does anybody want to share their secrets for a good shine to the bat after refurb. I've hand buffed the Salic bat wax but was wondering how some of you guys get a good shine as if the bat is new?

Paul Aldred has his own formula on sale on his site I believe.

Hi All,

I have recently purchased a Slazenger V800 which was my favourite back in the day, i had one that pinged everywhere until it was stolen from my school!

I have de-stickered as they were damaged and mostly peeled off. I have gone over with a 120 & 150 sander (Waiting for the 240 and 400 to arrive).

I do need suggestions to get the nice shine and polished look. Would i be correct in rubbing wax on, leave for 24hrs then buff? I notice that most of the bats on here and newer models from H4l and BB are very light in colour. whenever i previously have oiled my bat they go Very Dark with minimal oil after 2/3 coats.

I would appreciate your comments as i have been reading through your posts at work and have bought 2 other bats, and recruited the clubs old bats that people were about to throw away.

Many Thanks in advance.

Aldred or salix wax is your best bet. They do a really good job of shining and leaving a really smooth finish

Tried this - It does darken the bat a bit, but not like oil. Gives a nice shine (Unable to take a proper shot of it though)

I don't have time for a full update at the minute but here are my latest finished projects. From left to right are B3 3 Stripe, Kookaburra Ricochet and Norfolk Bats Butterfly.

Got two Woodstocks refurbed recently. The Curve is my pride and joy and have had it for 4 years; sadly during the first season the inside edge toe completely fell off so John put two pegs in to hold it together. Of late the crack causes by that inside edge toe has grown and grown so thought John could do something with it. Still absolutely flies off the middle and is the best bat I've had to date.

The second is an Airstrem which has been my second bat for a while. It's 2lb6oz so a bit light for me and as the pictures show the face has taken a bit of a beating over the three seasons I've had it. John has done a great job with these two bats, definitely using that Curve at some point this season.

Latest project - Kookaburra Kahuna Nemesis

I picked this up off Gumtree a couple of weeks ago. It has seen a bit of use, although I couldn't really work out much more due to the horrible scuff sheet hiding everything underneath.

I think the cat was happy with the bat.

I start off by sanding away any glue residue from the scuff sheet with an old sanding disc. It doesn't matter too much about the grit as the glue quickly sticks to the paper to leave the wood exposed.

As the glue dissapears, the bat starts to come to life as I can pick out grains, blemishes and any damage. Thankfully, the bat is in good condition and doesn't require any additional repairs.

I paid close attention when working around the front Kookaburra sticker. I turned my orbital sander down to a low speed setting for greater control. The masking tape helps to protect the stickers and allows me to get that bit closer than I dare without tape.

After going through Grits 180, 240, 320 and 400, here is the outcome. 6 pretty straight grains with a fair few blemishes and some heartwood on the edge.

Here is how it looks after a coat of oil, I will probably give it two or three more coats due to the age of the bat and I want to try to match the colour of front and edges with the untouched back.
