First game of the season for me Saturday, took 1 catch from 1. Got 41 with the bat and we won with 8 or 9 overs spare, and the famous won at Wembley yesterday so a good weekend.

after reading a recent article about backlifts ( tapping bat rather than an high back lift - can't remember where I read it but an Aussie I think) I thought I'd give it try as it was how I used to bat. totally liberating! A ton  and a fifty in 4 innings ( 17 years sunce last 100)  timing the ball and not chasing anything outside off.

Congrats on the ton. And the 50 back in the 3rds

Shame you wasn't in the thirds in our wet encounter with hallam. Would have been good to see a fellow forumite

2 of mine have been given by kids sent out and they have no idea about umpiring or LBW decisions and are not able to say no when a man is screaming at them whilst appealing. And I can see I know when I'm out LBW I have smashed 1 into my pad, one was going so far down leg and today's just hit the bat and nothing elsa hell it went to backward square leg with the keeper who was standing up down the leg side to take it

Agree with this Chris exactly the same thing happened to me two weeks ago a round the wicket bowler to a left hander on the front foot I flicked  the ball onto my pad the opposition who were shouting how's that to almost ball all screamed at the kid who wasumpiring he bottled it on the strength of the appeal and gave me out LBW.

Did a bit of umpiring at the weekend. Got called an effing cheat for turning down an lbw. By the fielder at point.

In regards to LBWs and LBW appeals, a week ago I was umpiring and we had a off-spinner bowling to a right-handed batsman (so turning from off to leg). The bowler appealed for LBW for a delivery that brushed pads before missing leg stump by a good 6 inches so I was somewhat bemused by the actual appeal. I pointed out that the ball had missed leg stump to which the bowler replied "yes but it hit the pads first". The bowler in question was not just some plucky village cricketer trying his luck but a former England ladies international cricketer wearing an MCC cap !!!

There in probably lays the issue with LBW's. Players simply appeal now regardless as soon as it hits teh pads.. then use the excuse 'it creates pressure'   'why not' 'worth a shot'.. Rather than actually only appealing when they genuinely think it's out. It's just people taking it way too seriously and not playing in the spirit of the game. win at all costs. pile pressure on the umpires and they'll give one eventually due to pressure rather than it actually being out

Just goes to show.. doesn't matter who you are or how good, wearing a cap while bowling is village!  ;)

I normally do a fair bit of umpiring (normally cause I'm out quickly!), I'm also a level 1 umpire and I always find the more people appeal for silly LBWs the less likely I am to give one when it's plum.  I also think that really good bowlers only appeal when they are actually dead sure it's plum, when they don't appeal for close ones it makes me think 'well they will really have to think it's out to appeal' so I'm more confident when they finally do appeal.

Finally how many times have you bowled and he batsman has missed it and you think 'how did that miss'  get some bowlers to bowl at the stumps with no batsman there and you'll be amazed how many times they don't hit the stumps.

After 185 in two knocks, the world came crashing down. Chopped on for 0 trying to cut through point rather than back foot driving through extra cover.

Curios incident in the game. One of our batters was on 50, he charged,  when the bowler picked up and threw the ball at the strikers end our chap has drilled it through mid wicket!!. Cue obstructing the field shouts and a lot of barracking. Good game though 276 played 240-4.

To be fair, if it was a shy at the stumps from an already played shot, those shouts of obstructing the field should have been appeals and he should have been given out!

Totally correct tim, it was the strangest thing ive seen. I think the umpires just signalled dead ball and tried to carry the game on. Usually you get the bowlers throw and then the batsman stands his ground, but it was a full blown swipe. Well timed considering the proximitynof the original throw!!.

Depends, if the ball was going to hit him or close then it's play on as you're allowed to defend yourself from the throw! Damien Martyn did it once in a test match, 4 runs.
