Saturday was rained off for us but we had a great friendly game against Harrow Wayfarers on the Sunday who are a great bunch of lads.

We posted 255 declaring just before tea, skipper scored his maiden ton and I got 61. Wayfarers then made a real go of trying to get the runs, only shutting up shop in the final few overs as it proved just out of reach and were in danger of losing the game by being bowled out so ended in a draw.

Oddly though there were about 12 catches put down between the two sides, at least 6 of them were absolute dollies. I had one looped straight at me at mid off and didn't even manage to get a hand on it! Very bizarre, it was a bit gloomy but I haven't seen much else like it!

My game was called off on Saturday so I went to watch the firsts and ended up filling in as a substitute fielder.

I've never in all my years of cricket encountered a team who gave so much verbal abuse on the field, it was absolutely disgusting. Even the umpires were amazed at how personal and aggressive they got, particularly to one of our lads who's an ex-pro and one of the nicest guys in cricket. The main protagonist was greeted with total silence during his shortish innings, which was pretty much the best thing we could have done in response to the verbals.

Anyway we batted first and scored 254/4 in our 40 overs. they got 180/7 in reply. It rained pretty much all the way through their innings and they moaned like hell about the conditions. I'm quite sure that the umpires kept them out there deliberately to teach them a lesson for their poor behaviour.

For the third season in a row they've made me do the teas and dropped me for the next game, I wasn't surprised by it this time but it's irritating they do this to me every season!

The last two occasions I did the teas I was only given 2 overs in the game and knew the drop was coming (and only giving me 2 overs was a way of justifying it "give him more of a game in a lower side"). This time I had my full allocation of 10 and got a couple of wickets (and wasn't even the worst bowler on the day) so am feeling hard done by as I did nothing to warrant being dropped (and more to warrant selection than some teammates who are still in the side this week!)

Cam,

Have they dropped you to a level where you will excel? or will you be able to hold your own within the team and be a good member to have?

Also how have you done this year? As a previous first team captain I know all about dropping people and having them complain and argue that it was unjust. If you haven't been scoring runs or taking wickets with a good economy rate then perhaps that is justifying the reason?

Cam, RoCo  :)

Have they dropped you to a level where you will excel? or will you be able to hold your own within the team and be a good member to have? Last time I played in the team I was picking up wickets for fun and was the "waggy one" in the tail, hopefully I can repeat that this time around. Last season I averaged 27 with the bat and about 18 with the ball from a handful of games at this level. Not bad returns with the willow for a number 10/11

Also how have you done this year? Since coming back form an operation (having missed the first couple of league games) I've performed consistently, if not spectacularly As a previous first team captain I know all about dropping people and having them complain and argue that it was unjust. If you haven't been scoring runs or taking wickets with a good economy rate then perhaps that is justifying the reason? I've been taking wickets since I came back into the side and have an economy rate of less than 4 for the season! The skipper even said I was our best bowler a couple of weeks ago and that I'd done well last week. Teammates have said I've out bowled the other offie since coming back into the side (including said offie who in good mates with and we talk openly), and he's still playing ahead of me. If it's down to performance that I've been dropped I'm fine with that, but I've been told the opposite!

The captains viewpoint could be he thinks he has better players available this week. It's not saying you aren't good enough but there is a difference between having a top player available and a reasonable player. It's brave to stick by loyal players and each circumstance can be different, but the captain first and foremost wants to win the game.

Not saying it's right and you seem to have copped it a number of times, maybe you should move club?

I wasn't really given a reason, just that I wasn't in the side this week. I've gone from being "our best bowler a couple of weeks ago" and doing well to dropped. The other offie told me himself he should've gone before me.

Was your tea that bad?
They can't be that horrific because they get me to do them at least twice every season, I just happen to be dropped for the next every time!  ???

That is a thought that has crossed my mind several times to be honest.
It is however my boyhood (and to date only) club, I have good mates there and am involved in other ways (bar & ground work where I can help) so leaving would feel like throwing 11 years away and sticking 2 fingers up to everyone who's helped me develop as a player over the years.

If you aren't playing enough then why play at all? I sat out most of my teens and 20s batting 8/9 as the last recognised batter and 5th choice bowler, getting 5/6 overs here and there. The one season I batted in the top 6, I scored 1000 runs in all cricket. Then went back down the order while the "big names" got the easy runs. Lucky for me I moved away and helped my next club win the 2nd XI league, batting and bowling plenty. Changed my perspective on just being a good "club man". If you aren't getting opportunities then don't waste the best cricketing years being a makeweight.

Decent start to the season so far, started off very nervously as this is the first season in three years I am out on the field without my knee brace and was worried about hurting it again but have had no issues other than bit of soreness and ache after the game. I feel like I am moving well on the field (nice not to carry the extra 2 or 3 pounds of metal on your knee). Bowling wise I am at half the pace I was at 2 seasons ago, still have my out-swing but not as potent as it used to be without the speed so have had to improvise with a lot of variety in speed and cutters and got wickets in every game except for one bad game where 3 overs went for 33 and no wickets. Hoping to keep improving.

If I was in your shoes I'd feel pretty gutted. Think you need to politely but firmly ask the club captain/chairman of selectors what was behind the decision since it doesn't exactly sound performance related. If you genuinely can't buy the explanation, find a club that appreciates you, plenty will. Similar thing happened to me several years ago and I ended up walking away with a heavy heart from a club I'd been happy at with some good mates, however the committee ****ed me around no end. It was upsetting at the time but I didn't regret it in the long run.

Move clubs fella, that club is just taking the mick. Look after your own game and that means getting a full game. There are so many clubs needing players that you shouldn't let a capt/club dictate to you.
