A great game for the Egham 4th XI against Kempton yesterday. Playing at St. George's College on a flat pitch with small boundaries, we put Kempton in to bat feeling confident of restricting them and chasing a target. We started off bowling tight, but they started getting away from us in the second half, eventually setting an imposing chase of 274 off 45 overs.

We batted brilliantly, with a new player scoring 96, as well as a 30 from one of our openers, 63 from our number three and a useful 20 from the skipper, before we stumbled to 9-down, with 10 runs needed, bringing yours truly out to bat. We scored a few more, including a gorgeous 2-not-out from myself, and I was left facing with 4 needed to win. Cue the bowler sending it down leg for four byes, giving us the win by one wicket. Cue celebrations, despite a little disappointment at not getting the winning runs off my bat.

I bowled okay, taking 1-32 off 8, but am struggling badly for fitness thanks to a knee injury, stuck bowling in the late fifties rather than approaching 70mph, which is more than a little frustrating (although I was able to crank it up after my captain decided to take me off due to fitness concerns, just to show him, cue me overhearing, "Do you think Ed's annoyed that I'm taking him off?").

All in all, a very memorable cricket match played in excellent spirits. I look forward to a high-scoring return at Kempton's football cricket ground.

are you actually bowling at 70mph in the 4th XI, or is there some giant irony in this story that I'm not getting?

Assuming that was the big lad who opens, he's normally your banker? Think we are over at your place next week.

We beat Cookhill Saturday who were massively village in every way. Turned up and started practise bowling on the square and the wicket, their umpire upset our groundsman, hacked their way to a below par 129, in the process giving us an extra 10 overs and then for the most part bowled like drains. Had it not been for our own rubbish brand of cricket - 41 extras in 129, and a few average shots we would of romped home but had to settle for a 4 wicket win. In our defence the deck got significantly worse second innings and started keeping very low, but I dread to think of what we might of scored batting first.

We were 17 players down this weekend thanks to a stag do! Nick was in the 1s and didn't score many for them, it was one of our old timers that got the runs. It was very kind of you to help make a game of it at the weekend, I know they have called of their 2s for the rest of the season and were mixing up the first team to give everyone a game for the rest of the season.

Fingers crossed for a dry Saturday and a good game.

No irony. I average mid-high sixties, and can bowl at around seventy for about an over (source: Hawkeye session at Lord's), but am held back by concerns over my bowling action and colts getting promoted over me as I only started playing at 16-18, and am now 25, but didn't find any sort of consistency in line and length until about two years ago. I am the quickest bowler any of my team has ever seen at fours level, but the thirds captain has never fancied me for the aforementioned reasons.

Hmm. I used to play with someone who could bowl at 70 or so but had bowling action issues. Once those were sorted he was nowhere near the same pace.

Strangely, I've been called in the past, but have spoken to the other coaches and senior players at my club, and I think that I've finally sorted out the issues, and am bowling as quick as I ever have. But once those concerns have been raised, the label is very hard to shrug off. I don't mind really, I enjoy playing fours, and coach colts as well, so can help the youngsters coming up as vice-captain. The only annoying thing is that few fours players can edge my best deliveries, and we don't have any slips able to hold anything off my bowling.  :)

Came in at 72-4 on Saturday on a good but worn track, top scored with 65 to get us up to 190. Sadly got out having a go with a few overs left but was happy to get us up to a defendable score. Then took 2-15 from seven, one bowled nipping back and one c&b, plus a slip catch. Good game, especially as it was against the team behind us in 2nd place in the league! Over 90 points clear with 7 games left now, title is ours to lose.

I think they said they were missing 3 batsman but we were also missing 7 batsman!, so it was one of those games where ball would probably dominate bat as both teams were well under full strength.

Remember a story I was told about an overseas Saffa called John During. He had play first class cricket in SA and came over as Marlow's overseas. He bowled well in the first few games but didn't get anybody out. They pointed out the same thing, he was bowling a good first class channel that was far to quick for club cricketers to nick off. He had to bowl at the stumps - problem solved. Even the talented experienced cricketers can make the same mistake!

As a club we had 27 people unavailable for selection due to TITP, Noel Gallagher, Injuries and a few poor excuses. Still managed to field two teams to fulfill the league fixtures. Neither went great, The ones suffered defeat, 223-2 plays 74 a.o with opposition pro claiming 8-13 and The Twos also suffering a defeat, 234-4 plays 57 a.o in 33 ovs. Still a great result managing to field both teams with such a large number unavailable.

Yes, look at the bigger picture. However, I would be letting some people know they aren't going to automatically walk back into teams. Doesn't look like you had many stand out performers but if anybody did well with the ball (can't see much on the batting!) then a week on the sidelines for some of those missing (with poor excuses/ generally rubbish availability) might make them think again.

Small boundaries?
Cover where they are hitting, make em hit over?
Vary the pace, get the keeper to stand up
Vary the line, whilst still pitching it up

In most cricket, unless your proper sharp,, bowling too short and not on a stumps length is basically a free hit and your gonna struggle to first of all put pressure on the batter and secondly to actually take wickets

70mph would make you the 2nd quickest bowler at my club, and we have two ex-county pros... I'm amazed that you aren't playing at a higher standard.

If you don't move it off the seam, then yes, I'd agree that this is often a problem.
