If you can get your hands on a RNS pro bat you will see why they make for some of the big boys.

I had one, went like a gun, until it disintegrated!

To say the pressing on some pro bats is 'soft' would be a complete understatement!

Soft pressing = high performance? Another contentious issue/ myth.

Where's Mr Streaky Bacon today?

He doesn't have any specific supplier, he has got his bats from SS, SG, RNS, BAS, BDM, CA and many other suppliers in India/Pakistan. He just has a fixed profile and he gets his bats made by guys and whatever he likes, he keeps and rest of them are sold at various places. I have also heard that he has started using semi-oval and tapered handle (thicker at the bottom than thinner at the top) though he is a very wristy player.

All the professional Indian players including Sachin and Dhoni....... have/had fixed profiles and they just got those profile bats made by different suppliers (though BAS was Sachin's favorite towards the later part of his career). There are only a few cricketers who have stuck to one supplier (e.g. I have heard that Rahane buys his bats only from PR - a small supplier from Meerut or Sehwag and Dravid mostly used SG in later parts of their careers).

Rahane just not just use PR look on his profile on crickinfo to tell me this.

As for pressing soft all you have to think about is force in force out why would you want a bat to absorb so much motion.

Simple really even a thick man like me gets it...

But soft does absorb? Simple really?

Optimum pressing is what you're looking for, according to the real experts.

I been around enough bats and played with enough to know soft pressing is a load of tosh...

Ask any maker on here they will say the same.

Pressing the great beyond it incredibly hard to not press a bat correctly.

There no real cloak and hidden mirrows really.
Optimum is correct but that will always vary from once bit of wood to another and done on feel and sounds by most.

Absorb well what do you think a dent is in your bat!!!! Energy into the bat...

Ask yourself why do you knock your bat in and why do bats "open up" they get a harder face is what IT IS....

So much BS talked about pressing and bats for most it doesn't matter what you use if you cant bat no amount of great bat will change.

Take bows I hear they help you hit over the infield, what a load of crap where you hit the ball and which hand is dominant does and how early or late you take it.

The biggest difference in bats is the bloke holding it...

Agree with all of this. Now will you please go and tell the Sky commentators?

If it so simple that soft = absorbing energy can you explain why a tennis ball (soft) will bounce higher on concrete when dropped from the same height as a cricket ball (hard) ;) :)

"Soft" doesn't necessarily mean absorbing energy but of course you need a thin(ish) protective layer through a combination of pressing and knocking in and I'd imagine that after more careful, lengthy, "correct" knocking in of a soft press bat you get the same outcome as a "correct" press and "correct" knock in which is pretty much what you are saying anyway and you can ignore the smart ass comment on soft = absorbing :)

I don't think procricket said it was as simple as anything. He was just rejecting the commonly held belief that soft pressing = high performance in cricket bats.

A cricket ball and a tennis ball are made of completely different materials. A tennis ball is full of air!

And now I think of it, new (harder) tennis balls do bounce more than old (softer) ones.

Concrete you say that's my point what effect does either ball have on the surface of concrete... That's right none...

Think if a ball goes into a bat and dints it then the inward force is taking something out on the outward force after all a bat is not a trampoline.

But concreate neither ball will have a impact on the face of the concrete and that nullifies it.

Optimum press is the one the one not too deep or too soft.

Please don't call me a smart ass either pal, so what would you say a don't through a soft press is .... science is there to prove the indentation is caused by absorbing more pressure through the membranes by crushing them. Of course ball types have different properties. I was not trying to be smart it just what I have learnt from a very scientific guy.

It why you knock the bat in too..

oh and the bat from SS was I guess softer pressed and did not play well but then again I tend to find bats that mark are never great I like my straws crushed but as you say not too deep a thin veneer bit like a laminate with a mega pressed thin bit over a nice soft bat....

Why would anybody want a soft bat why press a bat.

here you go

This dint is effectively lost energy, energy that should have been transferred back into the ball, decreasing the Co Efficient of Restitution (ball rebound speed). Also, what you will get is bat that will break up very quickly due to repeated damage caused by ball impact.
