Compare this to my new Sunday side which is a better standard, and our captain has said to me "if you don't bat top 6 you bowl or if you're not a bowler you bat top 6, nobody spends their money and afternoon to not get a game, that's why cricket clubs die" which is exactly how it should be. Despite not doing well personally with the bat at my sunday club, i enjoy the fact that everyone gets a game, even if it does mean some of the top 6 averaging 3/4 with the bat, everyone is happy to play and the atmosphere is good.
Apologies for the rant but it's getting a bit annoying that i essentially spend my saturday standing in a field watching other people play cricket.
That Sunday skipper has the right idea, if you're playing at a fully professional level where people might lose their job if you lose then bits and pieces players have to make sacrifices to help the team win.
But we're not professionals, we're paying to play and giving up entire Saturdays on top of that. If you went to the cinema and paid to watch a movie, you'd be annoyed if you got stuck behind a pillar that obstructed your view and then told that other patrons deserved a better view because they have a better appreciation of the art of movie making.
I've only captained a couple of times but the first thing I've done (after trying to get out of captaincy without success) is look at my team sheet and see which players are going to bowl 7-9 overs and they basically won't bat in the top 5 no matter what.
We're playing Worcs League Div 5, if you're taking this seriously then you've got problems tbh. As many people have said, cricket clubs are struggling to survive up and down the country so it's important to make players feel like turning up is worth their money and time. If you don't feel valued then why spend 3 hours running from deep midwicket to deep midwicket and batting #10 when you could to wake up on a sunny Saturday morning, look out of the window and decide you'd rather take the kids to the park for a couple of hours and return home in time to watch the World Cup.
