@NT50 , you're not over reacting.  If you play high standard /grade etc then thats your lot sometimes ....but you aren't playing a high standard so the skipper should be more aware and proactive in giving you (and others ?) a fair go. If I were you I'd try to feel out whether the captain will be there or not next season. If he is then I'd finish the season off with them , say nothing (since it doesn't look like there is much appreciation for your situation ) and find a new Saturday team for next season (ideally in a team that plays against this Saturday team of yours, so you can make some runs/take some wickets against them and show them first hand that you were underutilized by them ).

Your Sunday skipper has the right attitude.

Even on Saturday, you note that you're playing a low level of league cricket. Just because it's organised doesn't mean everyone has to play to win at all costs. It doesn't sound like you're letting the side down and are contributing when given the chance, so you're well within your rights to demand more.

Maybe you're being regarded as a handy "fill in" player but not a specialist with bat or ball. If that's the case, perhaps talk to your skipper about your preference and make a case for one or the other. Would you rather bat 4 and not bowl, or bat 8 and bowl more? Either way it might be better than just doing a bit of everything.

Good fielders are worth their weight in gold but there's no such thing as a specialist fielder!

Won by nearly 200 on Saturday, but yet another game where i wondered what the point of playing for my team was again. Batted 7 and made 11* in a few overs as we racked up 230-odd. We then skittled them for 50-ish, i took 3-5 from my 2 overs. They had quite a few players who had never played before so it was a bit of a hollow victory as they really did try their best but looked way below par with bat ball and in the field, but i applaud them for making the effort to come and play the game as it was hard on them.

However, I'm wondering whether i'm justified in being a bit annoyed at my participation (or lack of) in my games this season, or whether i'm overeacting.

I've played 6/8 games this season. My batting positions thus far have been: 9(dnb,) 7, 8, 6 (with 2 needed), 3, 7. I only batted 3 that day as our usual one dropped out just before we batted and we had nobody who was willing to move up the order, i was down to bat 7.
And i've bowled 15 overs in those 6 games. 6 were in the first game when we had no bowlers. So in 5 weeks i've bowled 9 overs.

I'm averaging mid-teens with the bat and am in our top 5 batting wise for runs/average, having often been sent in with a few overs to go and told to give the strike to the batsman at the other end who can whack it, or with the goal of protecting 10/11 as our middle order has collapsed again.

With the ball i've been going at 3/4 an over (twice i was bowling at the end of the innings) and have taken 6 wickets so far @ 10. In comparison our regular bowlers (two of whom bat in the top 5) have bowled roughly 50 overs each. I'm our 4th top wicket taker, having bowled the least out of our bowlers. Again, i'm usually given the ball when our regular bowlers are away, and have been coming on as 6/7th choice bowler and our captain has run out of ideas.

So in 6 games i've batted above 7 twice (so had 2 games as a batsman, one of which was with a few balls left)  And bowled less than two overs a week for the past 5 games.

Am i justified in being annoyed at my lack of involvement? I'm constantly shunted down the batting order to accommodate people who don't play every week, and constantly given a few sympathy overs every couple of weeks to accommodate bowling from people who, for the most part bat above me.

The thing is, i'm happy to have my role change from week to week to reflect our team. I don't mind batting low down but getting my overs in, or batting top 5 and not bowling to ensure everyone gets a game, but that seems to have been taken advantage of. I've raised it yesterday only to be told by two people that 'it's a team game mate' (which is incredibly easy to say considering one of them opens the batting and the other bats top 5 and opens the bowling)

The only constant this season has been fielding at gully where i've taken 6 out of 7 catches including a diving one-hander yesterday. Whenever i look a bit annoyed at the fact i've not really gotten a game very week my captain seems to make a real point of telling me how good of a gully fielder i am, but i find it bloody patronising to be completely honest. I could understand if i was someone who bowled a 10 ball over, or a batman who didn't know which end to hold, or if we played a high standard. But we play in the bottom Saturday league, and i don't really want to keep paying subs to be looked at as an afterthought for our captain, especially when i'm more than capable of bowling a 10 over spell or batting in the top 5.

Compare this to my new Sunday side which is a better standard, and our captain has said to me "if you don't bat top 6 you bowl or if you're not a bowler you bat top 6, nobody spends their money and afternoon to not get a game, that's why cricket clubs die" which is exactly how it should be. Despite not doing well personally with the bat at my sunday club, i enjoy the fact that everyone gets a game, even if it does mean some of the top 6 averaging 3/4 with the bat, everyone is happy to play and the atmosphere is good.

Apologies for the rant but it's getting a bit annoying that i essentially spend my saturday standing in a field watching other people play cricket.
It reads likes your   thought of  on Saturdays as a  good fielder but a  bits and pieces batsman and bowler a fill in with both bat and ball maybe it would help if you your  mindset and your Captain if you concentrated on becoming a specialist 3 4 5  batsman who bowls bit or a top order bowler and reliable lower order batter as we all need to have an understanding of our role within the team.

After not being able  to put 11 players on the pitch we  were notified mid June re the new loan system this as really helped the club as at times we only had  7 players on the pitch and were aware that as a club it may  be difficult to continue as  an opener the loan system has  also helped me personally knowing the club bats deep.
Also the guys that have come in are appreciative of getting a game as  otherwise  they wouldn't be getting match.

Fully justified IMO. The days are long gone when you can laugh it off as a ‘team game’ etc etc. Simple truth is there are more Cubs than players so tell the skipper, see what happens and then if nothing change walk away. You pay your money and give your time to a HOBBY.. a pass time that is supposed above all to be fun (amateur cricket after all is meaningless).. you deserve to get either a proper bat (top six) or at least 7 overs if you don’t bat.

Plenty of clubs out there looking for players !

We won but was an awful day against a horrid team. Started well with opener and I putting on 74 off 11 before he leading edges to bowler and start of next over I top edge a sweep to deep square leg. So at 1st drink break I offer to umpire and enjoy the sun and in my first over there skipper from 45 on the leg side is the only person to appeal for 1st an LBW and then a bat pad catch both of which form front on where not even close and he throws all kind of abuse at me. I have a stern but polite word that he is supposed to be captain, spirit of cricket etc to which I get a couple of personal insults. Ok what ever. Said batsman goes onto make a lovely 100no hitting 2 off the last ball of our innings and we end up 277-7

So there skip starts the umpiring and 6th over in our quick wraps his gloves straight through to me regulation caught behind and batsman stays put so I appeal and he just remains totally silent and gives nothing, end of the over as I’m walking to the other end says “ you want to cheat then I’ll cheat” what a top bloke. From then in no one was really interested in the game as they are having no attempt to chase our score.

Then just after drinks the other opener who in honesty wasn’t very good and awful against the short ball removes his helmet at drinks and 1st ball after drinks ducks into a back of length ball, turns his head and it hits him flush on or just behind the ear flat out blood everywhere, no one really knows what to do so luckily I have some medical training and one of our lads is a solider and we quickly put him in the recovery position. Ambulance called but told could be a delay. After about an hour he is taken to hospital. At this stage it’s now 6:15 and we have only bowled 20 overs and we expect game off but no Oppo skipper wants to carry on so we do and they limp to 156-8 from there 45.

Honestly I never remove my lid no matter now hot or how slow the bowler and generally feel that in any hard ball cricket a lid should be compulsory. Our bowler who hit him is a Young county all rounder approx 65-70mph and he was in bits and the batter was maybe an inch from
Possibly losing his eye, lots of teeth not heaven forbid even worse. So all in all not a great game today
Surprised to read this @SOULMAN1012 Bury 3XI haven't been as bad as this in the past. Dobbo (over 50's player) was there Captain for many years and as well as being a decent batsman and bowler, he was a reasonable bloke. Sad to read that they weren't well behaved and you suffered some abuse. Shame I think bad behavior is filtering down the league at the moment. Hopefully next week will be better.

The skipper for sat just gone wasn’t the guy guy mentioned, we played Bury 2 weeks ago when he captained and all our lads said it was a great game then. Quite a few of our lads seem to know there normal skipper and made comment to he wouldn’t appreciate Bury being portrayed in this way. Honestly mate just an awful game all round

That Sunday skipper has the right idea, if you're playing at a fully professional level where people might lose their job if you lose then bits and pieces players have to make sacrifices to help the team win.

But we're not professionals, we're paying to play and giving up entire Saturdays on top of that. If you went to the cinema and paid to watch a movie, you'd be annoyed if you got stuck behind a pillar that obstructed your view and then told that other patrons deserved a better view because they have a better appreciation of the art of movie making.

I've only captained a couple of times but the first thing I've done (after trying to get out of captaincy without success) is look at my team sheet and see which players are going to bowl 7-9 overs and they basically won't bat in the top 5 no matter what.

We're playing Worcs League Div 5, if you're taking this seriously then you've got problems tbh. As many people have said, cricket clubs are struggling to survive up and down the country so it's important to make players feel like turning up is worth their money and time. If you don't feel valued then why spend 3 hours running from deep midwicket to deep midwicket and batting #10 when you could to wake up on a sunny Saturday morning, look out of the window and decide you'd rather take the kids to the park for a couple of hours and return home in time to watch the World Cup.

I don't know if you have neutral umpires in your Saturday games, but if you don't, I predict that if you are moved up to bat in the top 5 you will be triggered the first time the ball hits your pads.

tbf I'm normally the one triggering them, I don't want to give them out but they keep planting their pads in front of middle stump :(

Thank you lads, it's reassuring to know it's not just me overreacting!

I think a lot of the problems comes from the fact that last year we were scraping 11 together, and had 3/4 older club members/parents playing who didn't want to bat or bowl and just came along to play with their son/ help the team out and get out for the afternoon. Whereas this year we have 13/14 competent players wanting a game most weeks. which means someone always has to miss out. We're a very young team and i'm often the 4th oldest at 21, with the rest being 17-20.

I spoke to one of our other players whose returned this season after being on contract at a rugby club, and he's said that he's noticed that i have been getting a game as an all-rounder who isn't doing either discipline! We've both been frustrated this year as we constantly try to arrange training, but only do so about every 3 weeks as people say they can't be bothered to train. We've lost 3 very close games this season and can't help but feel if we trained regularly we would be alright.

I've decided that i'll give it a couple more weeks to see what happens, and if it doesn't improve then i will spend the rest of my season playing for my mates Saturday friendly side and then probably move to a big club a few miles down the road as they have 4 saturday and 2 sunday sides. Will all depend on if i can pass my driving test though.

Having a good season myself personally but the match this Saturday was a cracker going right down to the last over.

For those who like match reports I've written one on our website at http://www.kilvecc.co.uk/kilve-chase-brilliantly-during-scorcher-at-broadway-horton/

Ideally yes , but i was referring to /thinking of the oz grade system whereby players (not teams) are promoted/dropped on a match to match basis , in which case it can be unavoidable sometimes (and all players are told at all clubs that that is the way things are and if you dont like it then play subbies , park (village) etc).
In different/ english systems of teams being promoted/dropped etc then the team should ideally be selected in a balanced way where all players are called on to contribute , and if a player is unlikely to contribute they should either be given more of a go or should have been placed in a lower division team so they get a go .

Our final group game last night in the county T20, before the game we already knew we had made the finals days which for a very small club is a great achievement seeing as the other 3 sides are all EAPL sides or Div1.
Won the toss and batted and we made 189-6 against a decent attack and arguably our best team batting display, personally after batting myself at 9/10 each week as skipper I batted 4 and for 39 from 26 balls

In reply there 3 league batters showed there class in a 87 opening stand inside 8 overs with some lovely straight hitting, 1 retired as per the rules at 50 the other caught in the deep, no3 finished 47* but we restricted them through the middle overs with spinners doing a great job and they ended 176-4

4 wins from 4 as T20 skipper and hopefully a good day out at finals day
