Title: Can this be saved?
Post by: Krs on October 31, 2013, 01:28:13 PM
Well look what I found in the attic

It is my first ever bat I bought - 16 years ago.

It has major cracking on the toe and on the face

I bounced a cricket ball on it and surprisingly it seems to have some life in it.

Do you think it is worth taking it in for a refurb?

Yeah.  That looks like it may be salvageable

there is no reason that cant be refurbed. a good clean up, glue the toe and any other cracks and buff it up and a couple of coats of oil as its probably pretty dry. should look great after!

Refurbishers dream! I love bats like that!

Lots of fun to restore and usually the wood is quality on good names so is easy to repair.

Would any of you like to take the challenge up?

Poor thing :(
Some TLC desperately needed even if it's never used in anger again.

I do feel sorry for it.

I scored my first 50 and then 100 with it. A year later just gave up on cricket as I started to like girls and football.

It has such a nice shape to it, would be really cool if anyone knew anything about this bat.

PM's have been sent out.

Very interesting that this bat has 20mm edges, very little concaving. Cost me £120 in 1997, how much would that be in todays price?

That looks an absolute cracker, rather vintage looking

Might go for a rummage around in my loft now

Little work here and there will make it a decent bat, if someone works it can become a good net bat ( though looking at your other posts I know you don't need another net bat  ;) )

would be awesome to refurb mainly to see how nice it will look but equally its got a lot of history the way it looks now, could just keep the pictures and have a nice looking bat

I was thinking of leaving it, but to my surprise the bat seems to have some life in it. I think I should give it another chance in life. Will be funny when I walk up to the crease with a 20mm edge bats, lol how times have changed

I think I would be tempted to keep it as it is. But I'm sure it would come up nice if refurbished.

Might be worth sending back to Newbury to have it fully sanded and new stickers?

This is a reason for you to keep it as such and display it in a case ,you can tell your grandchildren about your hundred and show them how bats looked many years from now.

That's exactly what I am doing, however not sure if they still have the same stickers.

I feel this bat has more to offer, unfinished business

Just got a call from Newbery and the bat is ready to be picked up.

I asked how it looked and there was a pause and then 'there are quite a few oil marks'

HMMMMMM not what I was expecting them to say. I guess I will go check it out, I hope it looks decent, I expect Newbery to do a decent job.

Maybe they are really old ones soaked in and they don't want to sand it back too much?

Okay back home.

Here are the pictures of the refurb

All cracks have been glues shut, the surface is very smooth. Maybe I was expecting to much but i thought it would atleast come back one colour, lol

Let me know your thoughts.

I think they would have had to sand large amounts off to get it back to one colour. You would have ended up with a much smaller bat! It is a sympathetic refurb retaining its character I think.

I think us bat lovers(me included) sometimes expect too much. We expect a bat that used and old to come back looking like a bat we've had refubed after 1 years use !

Not sure yet. The bat has plenty of life left in it, ball is still bouncing off well.

I agree. I did over oil it back in 1995, back then I did not know much better.

This is what I have to keep reminding myself, It is not a year old but 18 years old, lol.

Still will be using it in the nets.

I thought it would look better as well. I did a refurb on my old man's GN purely for decoration (handle was busted). It was 40 years old and started like this:-

The oil would have been fairly deep so would need a lot of sanding.  I think it would have looked better to re-oil rather than scuff sheet.  The oil would have made the blade more similar colour.

It depends on the oil.  I had some really old stuff that was quite dark, but the new stuff is quite clear.  If you can find some coloured stuff, that'd be best.

One of our new team members has this 10 year old laver & wood bat. Its a big bat almost 3 lbs and still going strong.
There is no crack but just the surface chipping out
I removed the face sheet and just cleaned the glue off from the sheet. What's the best way to work on this bat ?
I can sand the face but i am afraid if a big piece chips out from the surface
here are the pics:

Nevermind though this was never intended to be a match bat but more towards a net bat! Weighs the same as my DS custom so it can play second fiddle to that

NO nick just poor sanding oil will make the darker bits go darker and not so dark bit bit darker just needs more time spend on it looks like its been done by 7 year old sorry newbury but that's what I think

Oh well, there is not much I can do to be honest now. It is just a Shame that the bat meant something to me - Newbery just saw it as an old bat that was in the way of Kudus bat making! It came back a mess. I feel like I should have just left it as it was and kept it as decor.

True that it would, but the contrast between a brown and darker brown would be a lot less noticeable than brown and white as it is now.

You could always send it back and ask them to do a better job on it? It doesn't look like it's been done professionally, I could do a much better job with a bit of sandpaper and some pva. It's not all that hard to refurb a bat and it's not in the worst condition ever either.

Well I gave them a call and they said it was an absolutely brilliant job. I told them that I don't agree and neither to be people at the on this forum. He said he will look at this post and let's see if he comments.

Not becoming a fan Newbery, feel like they think they know everything. He told me that most people don't know much about refurbs, I asked if he does refurbs and he said no but he had played the sport......ummm so have I.

Though unaware of the actual bat condition, from what I saw in the pics the bat should have been returned in a slightly better form and look (atleast).

I sent a bat to newbery recently - and ill say it now, I'm a massive fan of them HOWEVER I sent them a pro bin bat to them for refurb and they really didn't do alot for the price paid. The toe guard was also shoddily put on - I do a better job on my refurbs.

Sounds a little concerning.

Do you think the issue could have been that the oiling carried out years before was overdone and too much used and patchy?
And years of not being used has stained it deeper in some places on the blade?
Saying that, a better job should have been carried out as most of us on here wouldn't have been impressed had the bat been returned to us as patchy as that!!!  ???
Personally, with the past you have shared with this special bat, and hitting your first 50 and 100 with it, I would have spent the money on getting it framed or displayed on my wall in the condition you found it in.

Personally, with the past you have shared with this special bat, and hitting your first 50 and 100 with it, I would have spent the money on getting it framed or displayed on my wall in the condition you found it in.

You live and learn Pete!

Just disappointed with the service, but you never know I might score my first 200 with my Aldred and then frame that!

I think that's quite a sympathetic re-furb, too much sanding could destroy the weight, balance and rebound quality.
More oil has soaked in along the grains meaning the grains had opened up.
One trick to try is a good rub down with methylated spirit, it usually lifts off oil from the surface grains. Might be worth a try on the back.

Here are some further thoughts/observations

Look at the bench,  that's a finishing bench,  not a makers bench. Was the referb done but an apprentice?

The shoulders of the bat have not been sanded well they are still very dark,  I get the weight issue,  and this was a light bat to start with,  but still,  surely the shoulders could have been sanded more?

The toe guard looks very well fitted.  Indicates some skill.

Remember the GM refurb,  that was a bit light and dark too.

Just some more thoughts.

I wopuld agree it looks like a sympatheic refurb, with the amount of lifting on the face they wouldn't of been able to take them all out so better to lift glue and clamp I would think, a bat this age im not sure you can expect it to come back looking relatively new ?
