Not many details yet but looks like it will be franchise based and run alongside the T20 Blast.
Can't see it happening but how great would it be if they put it on free to air TV?!
-
Watch the likes of BT Sports bid for the rights or something, if not it'll just go onto Sky Sports. If only it was on free to air television to help the sport grow a little :(
-
Come on fellas, we all know this will be on either BT or Sky. Too much money to be made from putting it on subscription TV
It's the way the world works these days.
-
I know but I'd love to see cricket back on free to air TV, there's some real characters in cricket that could become heroes to young kids, likes of Root, Buttler, Stokes, AB, Kholi, they could be legends to kids like people like Flintoff and Pietersen were to kids 10 years ago. It would really boost participation among youngsters I think.
-
Pretty sure live cricket hasn't been free to air for at least 20 years.

Ah stand corrected, I was thinking more domestic .
-
Channel 4 has been the closest to trying to put cricket on normal TV in recent years.
Having just paid 25 million for the Great British Bake Off thou they will not be in the running.
I mean a cake is a cake is a cake. 25M is some sort of nonsense to spend on some tarts and a Victoria sponge
You would even put up with Mark Nicholas if it was on C4... :)
-
Why do we need another comp alongside the T20 blast?
Surely one or the other?
-
Why do we need another comp alongside the T20 blast?
Surely one or the other?
To prove the franchise style is better and force the counties to adopt it possibly
Run both pick which one brings the most fans in?
-
Why do we need another comp alongside the T20 blast?
Surely one or the other?
I was thinking the same, more fixtures to squeeze in.
-
When they mean free-to-air I mean it has to go on one of the big four channels, BBC1/2, ITV1 and Channel 4. It's pointless in my eyes if it ends up on one of the lower down channels like ITV4 (this is what they did with the IPL and that didn't get many views I believe)
-
Yeah CPL was on Dave this year too, not sure how well it did though.
-
Extra pay packet for the top players..nothing for the lower standard county players
-
Cannot fathom why two divisions hasn't been chosen over this, don't see Somerset/Glos fans travelling over to Cardiff for a t20. Can't help but feel the county games could end up being better supported than the city games.
County champs to end up with 3 divisions to make room for having two t20 tournaments?
-
Disaster for county cricket. Absolute disgrace that all but 3 county bosses have put the short term payoff ahead of the good of county cricket.
Proper membership paying county fans have been shafted, its the beginning of the end. It'll start with just the T20 but whats stopping the 4 day game eventually becoming an 8 team franchise.
-
Cricket in England is dieing and it will be dead because of the stubborn attitude of those that currently watch it and play it. The die hard fans.
You see it on Twitter and you see it on here.
"I'm not playing anymore if they change my beloved game"
"I'm not watching anymore if they make it franchise"
Open your eyes and realise if you don't accept an attempt at change there will be nothing to watch anyway!!
Northants have no money, they had to let Willey go to Yorkshire.
Durham have no money hence Surrey getting half there players next year.
If the current county game was thriving and enough people were coming to watch, that wouldn't be happening. But it is!
The world looks upon the ipl, the big bash, the cpl, yes it's not everyone's favourite format, it's not everyone cup of tea, there's lots of commercialised annoyances. But guess what, the fans still fill the stadiums and the money is rolling in.
English cricket needs to make money and to do that it needs to bring the fans in, to bring in bigger better paying sponsors.
And the sooner is current cricketers except that the sooner it can grow again.
Being stubborn and petty is just gonna kill it.
As for "4day game be franchised soon" well it won't as no other country with franchised t20 as even suggested there going that way, but we in England will be down to 8 counties when the struggling ones are all shutdown due to bankruptcy.
-
Hit the nail on the head there imo @smilley792 UK cricket has to move with the times if it wants to stay competitive and relevant and whether people on here like it or not franchise style T20 tournaments have proved extremely popular worldwide and if the ECB aren't going to release more than one or two players a season to play IPL/CPL/Big Bash then having our own tournament is the only option I think.
-
Didn't the T20 get moved from being paid in a block as the ticket sales were poor and the punters said having too many games close together didn't make it viable cost wise, how will this change that?
-
not sure if I like this new idea or not. the T20 has become more popular and crowds are good. You def cant have two tournaments running thou one will fold.
from the papers the negotiation for TV rights might wait until BT sport can bid, 2018 I think
what happens thou if Counties end up not liking it when the dtls are finally done? most are still run by Committee and you can get voted out if enough members turn up to an AGM.......
-
Its going to be run by the ECB and not franchised so it'll be at Test match grounds only, high ticket prices and members at the those grounds given priority on them. And as it's ECB it'll be on Sky.
If you're a supporter of a non test match ground county it'll be a non event.
I'd like to see games at the Olympic, Etihad, Millennium and Hamden Park stadiums meaning potentially bigger crowds with much cheaper tickets.
-
I'm not sure comparisons can be made with other countries.
India its their national sport, its bank rolled by Bollywood stars
In Aus it's dirt cheap to get in, games are during the Christmas holiday period so are family friendly.
Neither two countries have anywhere near the same level of support for their domestic teams as over here.
The emphasise should have been getting the blast right. Making it Free to Air and making it more competitive more accessible and more publicised.
I just don't see how millions of new fans are going to suddenly take an interest whilst reducing the areas where you can go to watch cricket. At the same time alienating those fans who currently keep county cricket going.
-
one comp for the franchise clubs with big name players
another for the diddy clubs with county trundlers and journeymen.....the likes of essex, somerset sussex will still fill their grounds on friday evenings etc for t20 cricket
a place for both

I think teams like Essex will be hit hardest especially those near London or with a fanbase working in London. Dash back to Chelmsford to watch bang average county players with overseas players not good enough for franchise or hang around in town to watch the best of the best? Or if it's 30 mins to Chelmsford or 30 mins to London which direction will you travel in.
-
If the new T20 league goes on Sky, put Blast on Free to air!
As for the vote, Essex came out and said that their yes vote wasn't an all out yes in favour.
It was a vote to further discussion and see how it looks for them and what benefits they get.
If a county doesn't have a test ground, and therefore not host any games. They will receive £1.3m from ECB.
-
Seems a bit OTT having two T20 events IMO. Probably should've done away with the Blast. The smaller counties will cry, but you see from your IPL that non host cities get a piece of the pie anyway. There's too many average journeymen playing in the Blast. With the franchise based competition, we'll see the best English players missing it with the global stars(depending on which players are available. Would be great in some of the Indians where made available but seems unlikely).

What new fans ?
Will it really help grow participation ?
Some smoke and mirrors going on. It's a money making scheme for short term and that is all. Footy meat head beer swillers will like it though and they are where the money is to be made.

It will have a chance if it's made free to air on a major channel and blanket advertised, if not I agree it won't.

If any of the current comps were it'd be same so don't let that fool you
-
If you look at the likes of Northants and Gloucestershire they are still really competitive in the t20 and 50 over comps if you get rid of these sorts of teams it will be the England teams that lose out because the youngsters won't be able to play for these teams
-
Playing t20 in a block during the summer holidays, making it family friendly with cheap ticket prices to get the grounds full and young people watching, getting international stars playing and showing it on TV is what needs to happen, I think almost noone disagrees with that.
The discussion now just seems to be between 8 city teams (which the ECB wants) or 18 sides in two divs (which probably 90% of county fans would prefer?). I just don't see how having teams cover less of the country is going to grow the game - Somerset for example is full of cricket-mad people and families but I don't see them going up to Cardiff to watch the 'Dragons' or whoever play! Yes they can still go and watch Somerset play in the lesser competition, but then if everyone is doing that then what's the point of the big city teams? All you're doing then is having two tiers of competition but with no promotion/relegation to keep the lower teams honest.
Can't see any benefit of cutting to city teams only that you couldn't do with two divisions - maybe you'll raise the standards with only the best players is the only possible plus, but make player registration for t20 and first class separate and you'll do that anyway with two divisions, the top division would be the stronger. Don't see the franchise type model working well in England with only 8 teams and player auctions and all that nonsense. The Aussies saw the IPL, thought they needed a t20 league and created their own version to fit Australia, why can't we do the same rather than just copying the BBL?
-
I feel sorry for that 1 international ground that isn't going to get a 'franchise'..... Especially when it's probably going to be my home ground! Nothing north of Leeds.

Exactly the ECB are kidding themselves if they think suddenly millions of fans will come out of the woodwork
-

I think they'll attract people to games but they won't be fans or anyone even likely to follow test cricket or play amateur cricket. It'll attract beer swilling meat heads who will pump money in. So they aren't wrong about new followers... They just won't be people who will grow or play the game
Footy fan culture is what they want to attract and 2020 is the game for that.
-

I think it would appeal more to those who don't frequently go, bring your kid for a quid type of scenario.

So the details are out today.
My thoughts are that the ECB have outdone themselves once more.
They have effectively killed domestic 50over cricket as that will have no England or Franchise players in it.
T20 Blast could in theory could see more stars in it if England players are allowed in that and there's only one less overseas player. Surrey for example could have 3 or 4 England players plus 2 world class overseas players play a London derby at the Oval in front of 20K+ whilst a LondonT20 franchise with no Eng players plays at Beckenham.
Will county chairman on franchise boards have their own counties interest at heart? Will poor ones push for their players to be picked to get them off the wage bill whilst say Surrey discourage it in order to keep players to win 50 over comp.
Should county chairman from teams like Durham and Essex who are poor at managing their county be allowed anywhere near joint running a franchise?
Is having back to back T20 comps going to make franchise later stages boring in terms of overkill of T20 cricket.
At least there will be some free to air coverage
-
Well this sounds meeeental. Are groundsmen at test grounds (let's be honest, the test grounds will be the ones used) really incapable of producing a decent track for t20s?

Every ground to have a proper road of a pitch! Get rid of the bowlers and put up a bowling machine

No details seem to be out on the vote yet but the telegraph (who seem to have been interestingly accurate on ECB matters in recent years) have listed the 8 probable teams as :
North London
South London
Trent Bridge
Birmingham
South
Red Rose
White Rose
West

Lords
Oval
Trent bridge
Edgbaston
Rose bowl
Old Trafford
Headingly
Cardiff
Pumping more money into test counties and sucking the life out of others!
-
With those teams there isn't much represented far up north is there? White rose stretching up to North Yorkshire is the furthest I guess

Agree!
Would have liked to have seen,
Oval
Taunton
Durham
Cardiff
Trent bridge
Old Trafford
Durham
Chelmsford
All always seem to get good lively crowds and always seem fairly decent wickets for t20
-
Being in a Kent I guess South London is my new team, I'm sure they will come up with stupid names yet, hoping for the South London Cockneys

Fairly sure Durham have one of the worst attendance records going in t20 cricket from all 18 counties? Saying that I doubt Cardiff are particularly far behind (but the Telegraph article did make it quite clear they were twinned up with Bristol and Taunton as 'West' in their probables list).
-
Yeay I have always wanted to play for the south London brown caps.
What a lot of garbage. There is zero need for this.
Just put cricket on a free to air channel.
P.s. where will the Essex players play?

The teams will all be drafted. Chelmsford would presumably get perhaps a single North London home game at a guess with Lords getting the other 3?

North London - Essex

White Rose - Yorkshire
West - Glamorgan
So...
Don't we have a competition for these teams already?
T20 Boom... T20 Pop... T20 Fizz...
Can't remember.
-
North London I presume is Essex and Middlesex with south London being Surrey and Kent,
South would be Sussex and Hampshire I presume

Just seen that only 8 of the games will be on FTA TV. Are the ecb really that stupid that they miss the entire thing that has made Big Bash (which we all know they are trying to copy) so popular and relevant in Oz?
-
This explains a bit....
Although what i really can't understand is that it says a 50 over tournament and tests will be scheduled during the new T20 tournament so none of the England players will be able to play!

Not really the same situation, but wasn't the Big Bash completely behind a paywall for it's first few seasons?
-
This is likely to be an epic fail. There are some issues with the current structure of the T20 Bash, I'll grant you, but this is not the solution (and not just because having Championship games ongoing when half the players have been taken off to it and gigglesville)
The issues, as I see them, would appear to be:
1. We don't get a high enough quality of international players in, which then means...
2. People of the younger variety tend not to be interested...
Make the existing competition two divisions, eight games per team, schedule it over two weeks and allow each team three or four overseas and you acheive more or less everything you need to...
-

The championship would be stopped for the 5-6 week period the new T20 competition will be running for.

that wasn't the original suggestion?
-
It won't fail because the ecb can't afford it to fail. All it'll do is speed up the decline of the other completions. Face facts, the ecb couldn't care less about the game, it's all about selling it to India tv market and cashing in to pay themselves more.
It's business not sport now sadly, plus it's what th public want to see and play so alls good
-
that wasn't the original suggestion?
That's the proposal that's been floating around for the last few months or so.
The one day tournament would continue running in the background. I do wonder whether the recent North v South series was a little experiment which could be expanded (North, South, Midlands?) to have a couple of weeks long pre-season one day tournament for the best one day players in the country who missed the one day tournament during the summer.
Edit : Just re-read this and not sure if you mean that's that you suggested in your previous post. Sorry if it is and I'm going down the wrong route!
-
This link to the ECB website... just scroll down to the competition at a glance bit.
https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/355689 (https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/355689)
I think a point is being missed though a little bit - this is a NEW competition NOT a replacement of the Blast.
-
Am i the only one with a sneaking feeling that the blast will still outsell the new competition? All for free to air coverage and a bit of a rework, but am I (No Swearing Please) going to watch the Cardiff Dragons, and I'm guessing a lot of current fans will feel the same with whoever their nearest team is. The way things are going at the moment I almost hope it fails and fans everywhere stay loyal to their counties. Could be wrong, hope I'm wrong, but this is sounding more and more crap.
-
From reading/listening to to a few things on this i think the ECB's goal is to emulate the end result of the Big Bash (new audience, familys, % of people attending their first game) not an exact replica of it. On Tuffers and Vaughan they played part of the interview with the guy from the ECB and he said that FTA coverage was aspirational, extending reach was one of their core goals but there needed to be a balance between reach and commercials. I.e. if sky/BT/any other broadcaster pushes hard enough and pays enough i suspect the ECB would waive FTA coverage, which to me would be pointless
-
COME ON YOU SOUTH LONDON SWANS!

still reeling from the fact West London has been lumped in with North London which just cannot be right :)

Stop whinging, your city get's two teams, I'm about a 3 hour drive away from any of the "Northern" teams!
-
COME ON YOU SOUTH LONDON SWANS!
It's all about the Trent bridge titans!
-
I actually like this and I will remain positive.
I suspect sky or BT will get the rights with some kind of guarantee that a number of games are shown on their free channels. Or have all the games on the pay channels but BBC/ITV/4/5 also air the game at the same time.
Presumably this is not a competition aimed at current fans but for new fans. I support Sydney Thunder in the big bash, I try to watch all their games. I liked the Big Bash and picked a team. I didn't need to have any affiliation with Sydney. As long as they don't make the mistake of giving a team a specific geographical name (London, Leeds, Manchester etc) then surely fans will just pick a team that plays near them or a team with their favourite players. I'm from Sheffield so I don't want to
If you look at the surge in popularity in American sports I think if you make a good competition you will attract fans who might not even consider attending a match but will watch a lot of games. I'm sure there are plenty of kids playing football at the moment who don't go to games on a Saturday.
As for the traditional fans I don't think they are going to stop watching cricket because a new competition is being played. I can only see a net gain in fans if they do a halfway decent job.
-
Looking at the way this has been proposed int he papers, I have the feeling it might be similar to the Big Bash - surprisingly low quality of cricket, but popular because it wears the Emperors New clothes. The idea that some teams will be based around a single county (Lancashite) or two (Yorkshire and Wor Durham) and others on three could cause some confusion.
In terms of quality, I can see the White Rose side being tasty if they do allow Test players to play:
Overseas Batsman (Travis Head is at Yorkshire this year)
Overseas Batsman
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Overseas Batsman/All Rounder (Glenn Maxwell has history with Yorkshire)
Bresnan
Willey
Rashid
Plunkett
Wood

Seems like such a half arsed tournament now

i thought it had to be unanimous
ECB were threatening funding for those that opposed it
Let the fur fly
-
Do all counties have to agree or is a majority required?
They need 31 of a board of 41 which includes the chairman of all the county boards including the non FC ones, the chairman of the MCC and the chairman of the minor counties association.
-
yeah good on Middlesex leading the way as usual :)
I really don't think this is going to work without overseas stars flooding into the tournament-which don't look likely
the T20 tournament is getting more successful from what I can tell. They need to have a block of games in school holidays and the Friday nights and keep it as it is. It can then run alongside the championship games.
for it to grow,,,,it needs to be backed......so County chairman need a safety net from called off games and possible low turnout
The ECB have lined their pockets from SKY, they say they want to grow cricket...well T20 is popular with the kids(and some of us old ppl) so go ahead.
time the ECB stopped putting the onus on County Clubs and backed it totally.
The deal the ECB signed with SKY helped dimish cricket at amateur cricket here, it's time for a bit of moral and financial payback.
:)

Has anyone noted the attendances at the IPL this year?
Looks really poor to me, the games ive seen have been nearly empty compared to previous years!
i personally like the T20 Blast as it is, a lot of games are on friday nights, especiialy at trent bridge for some reason and i think that is a prime slot for FTA telly, imagine a game on C5 with 2/3 others available via the red button or on one of C5s digital channels!

Or a motd style highlights show like they have for lower league football
-
Or a motd style highlights show like they have for lower league football
This - for me the optimal would be one game shown live, followed by a highlights show either later in the evening or the next day (could imagine it'll be tricky to do the same night).
The BBC do a mid-week highlights show during the NFL season and it's bloody brilliant - something along that line would be better than nout too!
(I say this but then I have sky so somewhat add to the issue...)

At lunch on second day of Surreys CC game vs Warks there was a members forum. These are regular throughout the season where Richard Gould Chief Exec and Alec Stewart Director of Cricket attend and answer questions from members. Normally its naff with old farts moaning about the type of sandwiches in the pavilion and the quality of the members tent at Whitgift School before questioning every single squad selection. This one was a bit different and obviously featured the new T20 heavily. Below are summary notes made by a member of the supporters club (first published on oval-world.net). Very interesting, in effect our stance is we don't like it, we think its bad for the game but we wont publicly fight it because we don't want to alienate ourselves, however Mr Gould is "off the record" in favour of the #saveourcounties campaign that's been led up by Surrey members.
Stuff in quotes are Richard Gould, Chief Exec
Most of the discussion was about the proposed city franchise competition. Discussions with the ECB described as "really frustrating" and confirmed that Club have been unable to discuss proposals in public.
Free-to-air "is a must" and we also "need to see England on free-to-air".
We are in a "golden era of County cricket" and "the club has never been stronger". Five or six clubs are equally successful but "others have singularly failed to catch up".
There will be eight venues and "one is likely to be here. They [the ECB] want to come here".
"put pennies in our piggy bank so we're in the best position to get through whatever it is".
The ECB are "foolish to ostracise the Counties" but " a lot of pressure is being applied".
There will be an average of five players from each County, but for Surrey this could "very easily eight or nine of the best players".
During the competition, Surrey are "not allowed to play at The Oval "It is not an appetising position".
Disagrees that NatWest Blast does not attract a new audience as Clubs' research indicates that "60 per cent have never been to a cricket match before". The Club has a database of 50,000 under-16s who are members or have been to matches at The Oval or on Surrey cricket courses.
"We could vote against it, but it would make no difference." "To be seen to go against it may bring further ramifications down the line"
"One thing we cannot do is have no-one else to play against."
On other clubs supporting franchises, "more than a few of them can only see the money".
On the Chairman of Sussex: "Jim May only agreed to support it if Surrey won't be allowed to participate."
"Minor counties have been promised more funding."
In response to question about whether there will be pressure for a further reduction to the Championship: "I think there will be."
In response to question about the chances of success for the city franchise competition and its effect on the County T20 league: "Not sure if it's going to work, but two [competitions] won't survive."
The ECB do not want any rights to be retained for Surrey members for the new franchise, but this would not be acceptable to the MCC at Lord's, so "we'll let the MCC fight that battle."
Concluding comment on question about whether Surrey should call the ECB's bluff about the use of The Oval: "We hold the keys."
-
So... not discounting the thought that the ECB's calendar is out by 18 days, but apparently the new t20 comp won't even be t20 :o https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/668162/ecb-presents-100-ball-domestic-game-for-men-and-women (https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/668162/ecb-presents-100-ball-domestic-game-for-men-and-women)
100 balls per innings - 15 6-ball overs and one 10-ball over. This has been chosen because of its' 'simplicity'... I am confused.
-
That is the stupidest thing I've never heard of
-
haha can't help but laugh at the ECB's pathetic attempt to catch up with the rest of the world.
Does anyone even bother watching the t20 blast :D. Most of the big players (AbD etc) would rather play the CPL
-
Less overs = less beer money for the clubs
-
It's ridiculous!
Their attempt to differentiate themselves for the Blast as they know they are in trouble trying to compete on the same level etc....
As i have said on twitter - what they don't explain is what they are going to do with wides and no balls - because surely then it isn't 100 balls! or isn't there an extra ball!
-
Tools. Complete tools. The lot of them

3 runs for a wide except in the last over, isn’t that what colts do anyway?
-
thats bonkers!
surely T10 would have been a better way to go, its been done in the UAE and the players seemed to like it, although if we take any more overs off we'll end up with just a coin toss and then whats the point!
LEAVE THE GAME ALONE and fix the causes of the problems and get it back on free to air TV! ARGH!

I've seen people suggesting elsewhere that this weird new format is to shorten the game a bit so the BBC can fit it into an evening more easily. Don't know if there's any truth in that.
-
The problem isn't with the T20 product / format. It's been proven all around the world that it can work.
The problem lies in the accessibility and the stuffy public school boy image that cricket has with a lot of people in this country.
Get it on free to air TV properly, so as people can actually follow the tournament, rather than just dip in and out. And promote the life out of it, the same as the Big Bash. I understand we're vastly different nations, countries and cultures, but they've shown the way forwards, we need to follow that.
It's not rocket science and they certainly don't need to re-invent the wheel. I find it impossible to believe that people will go:
'Oh, T20 cricket, that's boring'
'100 balls per innings you say? Now you're talking....'
I hope it does work, I really do. But there's more chance of Mr Blobby winning the Grand National.

April 1st was 18 days ago, this must be real, shambles
-
This will only just confuse the spectators. What an utterly ridiculous suggestion.
-
Absolutely ridiculous.
-
So they will prepare local players for 100 ball format and then make them play T20Is. Seems ridiculous to have so many different formats. As others have pointed, stick to three formats and do free to air TV. Will help the game grow.
-
What next 5 balls aside with 1 ball each for 5 bowlers? Nothing wrong with the t20 brand of product.
-
ECB CEO Tom Harrison
"Throughout its development, we have shown leadership, provided challenge and followed a process. We will continue to do that as the concept evolves."
What is he talking about? Utter corporate drivel.
-
"What we're trying to do is appeal to a new audience, people that aren't traditional cricket fans," said Strauss.
"We want to make the game as simple as possible for them to understand."
The new format will not be simple to understand. He's talking nonsense here.

CENTURY CITY CRICKET
-
I'm going to steer clear of the debate about whether change is a Good Thing or not, but let's just take stock for a moment. Cricket has gone through various incarnations of the short form of the game including 20, 40, 50 and 60 over competitions and 4, 5, 6 and 8 ball overs. All of these, I'm sure, made sense at the time of dreaming them up.
If the cricket administrators feel that a 100-ball competition is the way forward, why on earth would they arrange it over fifteen 6-ball overs and one 10-ball over? Why not just have ten 10-ball overs? The latest article talking about the idea of replacing bowlers mid-over is clearly drawn from baseball's "bullpen" methodology, which may actually make some sense.
It could be taken further though - if time is the issue, change ends between innings rather than between overs. What about just having a straight 100-ball innings? Bowlers could be changed whenever you want, and they could have a 20 ball maximum which would penalise the team for no-balls and wides.
Basically if you're inventing a new format you might as well be brave and reinvent the whole construct rather than just shoe-horning a "mega-super over" in at the end to make a round number/for dramatic effect.
-
Personally from a game perspective, I think it's nonsense. However, if it is to be on terrestrial TV then it is a great thing regardless of the daft nuances they build into it.
I also think that from a statisticians perspective, using uneven over lengths has to be a nightmare to report on.
Would love to sit and watch some games on TV with my young son and see him gripped by it (without having to give some other broadcaster a fortune each month).
-
Just read the wage budget is 1m for each team with a 100k salary cap...no chance of attracting any of the top players paying them that little
CPL will be very happy - zero competition from this farce
-
That's disappointing, this whole thing is becoming a farce swiftly.
It's almost as if the ECB has gone "that IPL works well, lets do the complete opposite"
-
I saw on twitter so I don’t know how true it’ll be but that stokes and root will be assigned to teams for marketing purposes but not play.... if that is true then wow I have no words
-
Yep true that Stokes, Root etc... wouldn't be playing because it clashes with tests at that time of year!
So it will be marketed as if they are the big stars but then they won't get released if they are playing for England!
Daryll Mitchell PCA Chairman - "The likes of Root and Stokes will be allocated to a team for marketing purposes, but they won't be playing. The ECB made the point that this new audience won't necessarily know who Stokes and Root are anyway."
-
Absolute chaos at the moment.
The PCA aren't currently going to allow their members to play...
-
Just read the wage budget is 1m for each team with a 100k salary cap...no chance of attracting any of the top players paying them that little
CPL will be very happy - zero competition from this farce
Isn't that almost double the CPL team salary cap (which has larger squads as well)?
-
"this new audience won't necessarily know who Stokes and Root are anyway."
Oh dear! That statement is horrendous. Like kids are really going to know who someone like a Darren Stevens is compared to Ben Stokes :o
Big names make the comp attractive and as soon as parents realise they won't be playing, numbers will decline far quicker than current T20.
-
I think the answer is a balance between things. overall the more justice there is the game, the law of nature will prevail and win.
possible
1. things save time:
a. have 10 overs straight from each end. total of 20 overs in an innings. saving of 18 * 45 secs per innings. 13 and half mins. each innings. about 27 mins per match. Nearly half an hour!
b. limit run ups to eg inside the 30 yard circle, thus saving extra long run ups. few secs per ball.
c. have two bowlers bowling at one time, if they have the same action. eg seam bowlers with seam bowlers and slow bowlers with slow bowlers
it allows bowlers with 30 yard run ups to walk back to their mark whilst the second seamer who has a long run to bowl one, and then take in turns till both bowl 6 each finishing a 12 bowl (2) over. keeps the run of play going and the number of action potentials fired per min to increase. (science terminology)
2.
a, have batmans to face a limited number of balls, just like bowlers have 4*6= 24 balls each.
each batsman gets 50 balls max. unless 9 wickets have fallen he can come back after temporarily retiring.
All this easily practiced and proved with children. If they can adjust and have more fun, as the play is almost consistent , then it will be for adults as well.
one thing kids don't like is standing still doing nothing. the two bowlers bowling at the same time allows much more play then one ball per 45 secs. proved to work.
also kids don't like to not bat, if opening batman score a century each or top order i.e top 4 score all the runs what do remaining batsman do? they don't get bat. everyone likes to bat, but with 20 overs we cant have the mindset for a test match or odi, ie. bat till you get out. or overs are bowled out. not fair.
3. have new run system for boundaries:
4 changes to a 5
6 changes to a 7
100 meter + six is given a bonus to 8.
120 meter + six you get a 10.
1 single changes to a 2 and so on till a all run 4 = 5
idea is to allow batsman to reach 100 more so to celebrate a century. bigger scores are more exciting eg 300 scored in 20 overs. etc..
4. make drs 'if its out its out'. Simple. third umpire to intervene if wrong decision is given. Not limit to 1 review per innings. what happens if on the first ball of the innings a batsman wrongly reviews and so the remaining 19.5 overs the team is left with a review, and wrong decisions are given. not fair. reverse also applied if a bowler wrongly appeals on the first ball, so the remaining 19.5 overs no review for the fielding side, and potentially lots of wrong decision not going their way. not fair.
If umpires become less important, so be it. Unless its umpires call, to keep the ' owzat appeal' in the game. The umpires, are are not more important then the game. They are they for the game, not the game for them. Make it perfectly fair, (minus the umpires call bit expect for hitting the wicket. ).
b. if the ball hits the wickets its out, not 49.9% as the error is only 2% not 49.9 % therefore 5% margin is given only on hitting the wickets not for outside leg or outside the line...
-
So the latest news to come out of 'The Hundred' or should i say 'The Madness'.......
1. 10 ball over at the end has been scrapped
2. It will now be 20x5 ball overs to make it 100 balls
3. Teams will bowl ten balls from one end but captains will have a choice of whether to split the deliveries between two bowlers.
3. Therefore captains could be given the option of keeping bowlers on for two overs in succession
4. Bowlers can bowl a max of 4 overs - eg. 20 balls
5. Trial matches to be held at Trent Bridge (men) and Loughborough (women) in September
6. It looks increasingly likely that England players will be made available for the first two rounds of the Hundred and the finals day when it is launched in 2020 in order to give the tournament more star quality
Thoughts?? if i didn't know already..... lol....
-
Sounds like an overcomplicated load of bollox - I'll give it a swerve.
It'll have changed 10 times over by the time 2020 comes around, hard to get excited about.
-
What a farce.
Why release the rules, then change them - it just shows that they aren't confident in it. Therefore making it a joke.
-
Barely cricket anymore, sure we could also have 10 players rather than 11 to 'help people understand'. Maybe just one stump at each end too.

Cricket in a nutshell.
The current format is losing players at grass roots, many counties struggling for fans(some aren’t, but most are).
But the purists won’t even let a new style, format etc even begin without bringing it down.
I remember when t20 came out.
Fans
“What’s the point”
“Pros playing midweek cricket, lol”
Even counties
“Well let the youth teams take this”
“It’s a game for the second teamers to shine”
“Spinners will be lost from the game”
Seems I have worked though.

What I don’t understand is what’s difference 40 balls are going to make? I think it won’t attract that many new people. The thing that will is having it on free to air tv, instead of sky and bt. That’s partly why the 2005 ashes was so big because it was on channel 5, so everyone could see it not sky sports.

The pro's may have initially been sneery, but I don't remember any amateur cricketers who met the news of a county T20 tournament with anything other than enthusiasm. If anything it seemed long overdue.
After all: a) we all played T20 already and knew what a good format it was, and b) most of us couldn't spare an entire day to go and watch cricket, but an evening was distinctly doable.

The format is obviously stupid and ill-considered, any fool can see that. It doesn't have any advantages over the existing T20 format, in fact it quite clearly makes it more complicated and counter-intuitive for new fans to follow.
HOWEVER: the format is the least worst thing about the idea. Having 2 T20 tournaments running in competition with each other was even more dumb. At least by becoming a complete laughing stock, the 100 has the virtue of making the blast look serious and dignified by comparison.
Why cant domestic cricket just do things simply. 1) A 4 day tournament, in a pyramid structure with 8-10 elite regional teams playing "test matches" once a fortnight, 2) a T20 tournament with 4 divisions of 10 each playing each other home and away on Friday night and Sunday afternoons, meaning that the minor counties can get involved, and a home nations 50 over competition every September. That's it.
-
Free to air is the way forward - putting live T20 games on YouTube and other streaming websites. That's more likely to gain a bigger interest with the younger generation rather than a brand new format which is even making it too complicated for cricketers to understand.

Problem with putting it on youtube is that you actively have to search for it to find it. Which would be fine for me, as I have youtube on my tv and would happily spend 30 seconds typing in "blast cricket" or whatever, but you're not actually going to attract many new fans that way.
The other problem is what to do to attract kids who don't live in one of the 18 major counties. The junior team I coach (ages 10-15) in Cambridgeshire would happily support Cambridge, happily support Cambridgeshire and happily support England, but put any other teams on and they lose interest within a few minutes - I speak from experience.
Hence I've come to the conclusion that they only way to save cricket is to get international cricket back on FTA tv.

Have it on BBC and YouTube way more viewers and start it’s 7pm/8pm I can never get why they start some T20 games in the middle of the week at 4/5pm people are still in work or just coming home they don’t have the time to go.

Il admit I’ve not looked into it for a while. But last I remember not all grounds have permanent floodlights. So have to fetch temporary ones in.
So aren’t always willing to do it for every game due to cost etc. So will start some early so they finish I. Light.
Some grounds are even given a certain amount of times a year they can use there floodlights by the council.

Probably explains it that would be my main point but in the facilities to have games slightly later so people can attend. Also get the best players like the other leagues. People want to see the like of Gayle,Kohli and de villiers play so let’s make that happen. If de villiers is willing to play in the Caribbean we’re they don’t even pay there international players, they’ve got to find a way to have him play in england

This is starting to sound like sense.
I've always argued the disconnect between minor counties cricket and the "elite" county systems is an issue for English cricket. Who doesn't want to have the chance to give on of the so call "big boys" a spanking. make cricket aspirational!

Thought I would post this in here.... Admin maybe change the title of the thread to The Hundred now we know what this thing is going to be called etc....

There's a bit of interest from media and the kind of hardcore cricket wonks who devise their own IPL fantasy leagues for fun, but no-one else even seems to be aware its happening. When is this "new audience" supposed to magically materialise?
-
Although it's pointless and stupid
If all the players who are supposed to have signed up have and play, the level of cricket should be very good!
-
In a bid to look urban and cool, it looks like they're launching this all in Brick Lane.
Can't wait for the derision of the team names, personally...

Is this "interest" from the media genuine, or are they being "encouraged" to try and get some hype around it?
As the BBC are going to be showing it I suppose it is in their interest to pretend to be excited about it...
-
why are they all sponsored by crisps???
also those team names!!
yuck

One bright side is the sponsors - none of the three counties I could claim some connection have been permitted to have a team play there, but I can at least choose my favourite bar snack!

even the players done give a shlt!

Has to be up there with some of the worst cricket kit's around.
Names don't appear to be too bad.
Slap in the face for english coaches given all the teams have foreign coaches
-
Why not just call it English Baseball?!!
It will even out the equation since there is a sport called "American Football"...
-
Just a thought... is the reason Joe Denly got a white ball contract and not a test one just so there could be one test player per team in the first round of the draft?!
Not strictly true because Anderson and Broad are test contracted players who haven’t got a team, although they’re both going to be ‘mentors’ at their local side!
But the same sort of thing did cross my mind. Although for the purpose of this you would’ve thought Denly would be more suited to the format than Burns.

Jimmy and Broad were never going to play though, so you do wonder! Denly will just get picked later you assume.
London Spirit must be a bit grumpy, late pick in the draw and they end up with Surrey's captain who's no good at t20 😂

It's very tough deciding what is "fair" payment for mens/womens. I would suggest viewing figures and attendances would be somewhere in the region of 5x less for womens, and the pay is ~10x less? All depends on how well the Hundred captures the imagination. I am like most people, a sceptic/cycnic and would be surprised if we see many 20k+ crowds anyway, however, it's obviously guesswork at this early stage.
In other news, to me it seems like Birmingham Phoenix (my local team :/ ) have been shafted in the draft too, having last pick on the top bracket players and last pick on the next bracket too. Surely getting a high pick in either bracket is a nice advantage rather than having 8th and 9th pick of the 100k bracket? Weird.
-

It's because they negotiated £125k (the highest salary) with Moeen whilst 5 of the other teams negotiated £100k or less for their highest paid icon player. If they'd got Moeen for £100k they'd have had first choice in the 2nd round of the draft.
-
I'd be surprised if any of this takes off either but it's going to keep being fed down everyone's throats until it can be hailed as a success :( :D I'm not normally a raging feminist but if the BS goal of this tournament were really about getting more mums and kids (boys and girls) in to cricket then would it hurt so much to spread the total money a little more evenly? Of course "get mums and kids watching cricket" really means "make more money" and having some decent male pay to attract big names to the farce makes more sense there. Understandable but there is quite the gap nonetheless
Can't argue with any of these points. Be interested to know how they agreed the differences in mens/womens salary actually. Wonder how much of it was down to negotiation conducted by the representatives of the womens players and how much flexibility was given, or if the tournament organisers have just designated that amount and told them like it or lump it. To which, there isn't much reply :/
