Hi guys
Just thought I would start a little thread on seasonal transfers if anyone wants to participate.
where you are moving to for the current season, why you have decided to move on and what your thoughts are for the season ahead. You may be a paid mercenary or a journeyman cricketer who changes clubs a lot, you may be starting something new, or returning to an old club to play your last years out with old friends etc. Just thought it may be a good thread to take us into the new season.
I'll start things off.
I've played at 3 clubs in my local area since I started playing cricket but only moved between two rivals really other than 1 jnr/snr season in another league. The main clubs have been Streethouse CC and Old Sharlston CC. I started at Old Sharlston as a colt, moved to streethouse as a teenager (trophy hunter more like), left streethouse to pursue senior cricket at Old Sharlston and then went back to Streethouse a few years ago to play with old friends and I missed the place immensely. So I wouldn't consider myself a journeyman cricketer, just never settled really.
This year I have decided to move on to something new - completely new - a new club Established last winter called Brook Walton CC. When I say new I am referring to the ground, club, some playing members and everything else that comes with a fresh experience. The people aren't new, well most aren't as the playing members are made up of my Old captain from Streethouse, a few lads that played down there and other league members from the local area, so everyone knows everyone, on the playing side at least.
I left Streethouse after a reasonably successful season last year - cup winners and league runners up (to Old Sharlston - well done again boys, thoroughly deserved after going 11-12 games unbeaten second half of the season).
It came as a bit of a shock to the lads down there and the skipper wasn't too impressed about things but hey ho, life goes on. I moved clubs to be a part of something different (new clubs are rare up these parts), to play with some old friends, lads from other clubs I used to play with or wanted to play with before and to try and help the club build a solid playing reputation and climb the league to play Division 1 cricket.
I've accepted a drop in standard going from Div 1 to Div 3 but that really doesn't concern me, Its not going to be easy and the road ahead is a long one but with the squad we have and the support I'm confident we can climb the leagues and be up at Div 1 where we all usually play in no time.
That's my 2014 transfer story, what's yours?

moving back to england in july (after 10 years away) to blast my team to the village cup final ............... if they are still in it by the time i get back.

Where's that mate? I cant play in the village this year as I played for Streethouse last year lol. Love the village Cup it's an amazing comp
And good luck playing in it, you have to be a signed up member and have fixture representation from the previous season to be an eligible player.... Unless the club has never entered before... You'll end up like me... drunk on a sunday

If I recover from an operation on a torn ATF ligament I think that's what it's called! My ankle basically :) I hope to be playing in lisvane in Cardiff due to relocating down there :)
-
I'm moving clubs this year for no other reason than they are offering 60 ish games of cricket potentially against about 26. Standard on a Saturday will be slightly lower but Sundays better and lots of touring games, t20's, friendlies pre and post season etc.

I am moving teams due to Mrs Toadus requiring a shorter commute for her work.
You have got to love those first few awkward net sessions!

I've not had to worry about that really, Just be the awkward changing room glances on the first league game when everybody has been giving it the big one in the nets and now has to prove it on the field lol

Picked a club yet Toadus?

Excellent work - a young man I know, who is on the fringes of the county youth set up, plays down there and loves it - says it's a really nice club.
-

Not yet Cattus, but that is the next item on the agenda.
There needs to be some kind of dating type website for cricket clubs "Fun 30 something seeks similar cricket club who enjoys long walks on the beach, drinking like a fish after the game and rude and slightly offensive banter off the pitch".
-
im moving clubs next season due to the fact my village friendly side will finally be entering the league. it means i'll be dropping down from league 1 to league 5 but i get to open the batting and bowl a bit. also im the groundsman for my village side so i am quite excited to play as we have just finished construction of our first adult pitch
-
I'm currently going through the horrible debate of whether to leave my village club or not! I started playing for Colchester (pretty big essex club) on a Sunday last season and got on very well! They've offered a shot at first team cricket on a Saturday (they got relegated from the essex premier league last year) but nevertheless it's a great standard, especially as I'm only 18. The issue is that I get on really well with all the guys at my local club and feel awful about leaving seeing as they are struggling for a few players this year.
What are you guys' thoughts? Play the best cricket I can or stay loyal to my village side?
-
I've had a few offers this year (as have a few of our team) decided to stay at my club because its a decent bunch of lads and a 2 minutes drive from my house. Standard isn't bad and its just good fun!
I did accept an offer to play evening cricket for a team that offered me weekend cricket as well. We don't play evening cricket and I figured it can only be good for my cricket

My view. If you are in your late teens/early twenties and want to move in order to play at a better level then moving clubs is a good thing.
After the age of about 25 the main reason for moving is that you have fallen out with your club. I am always weary of players that turn up at pre season nets having played for 2/3 clubs in the last 4 years. 9 times out of 10 they turn out to be a problem and add no value before moving on again.
-
After a year away on a placement year playing cricket for Cheltenham it made me realise unfortunately how unprofessional my club is regardless of the league we play in (WARCL DIV 1) been going there my whole life from watching my dad play 1st team cricket to playing juniors and now playing 1st team cricket myself. Too many people not taking it seriously and the club has gone backwards since my dad and other people his age left the committee . Going to see how things go this season but will find it very difficult to move clubs leaving a lot of friends behind even though it's becoming like a pub team (not trying to offend people that play cricket just for a jolly here) enjoyment or standard is the question I'm asking myself and unfortunately our standards are slowly slipping.

Kind of have the same issue with my club. While the drive to win is still there, not enough players are dedicated and people are leaving. Part of me would like to turn things around for them but on a personal level the only sensible option is to go

Thanks, I tend to agree with you. In the end you wanna play the best level of cricket you can
-
I think you should think what can you do to help your club instead of jumping ship. As I did with my club.
If you stand up others will follow.

I think that's easier said than done in most situations, it's been tried at my club and people just aren't bothered. As much as I get on with my team mates I just wish there was a bit more desire as we can definitely be playing at a higher level.

Lots of reasons to move though..
New to an area
Looking to a higher standard
Looking for an easier standard
Maybe they just didn't feel at home
Moving jobs, so as they want to play as close to home as possible rather than live one side of town and play the other (much easier for post match stagger home :)
Lots of legit reasons
(Speaking as someone who has moved clubs a few times in a small space of time - hell, for one club I used to drive for 2 hours just to play home games, then of we played teams like Peterborough town we'd have another drive on top etc.. So isn't lazyness or lack of dedication etc)

New to area, fair enough.
Higher standard over 25, probably not good enough.
Easier standard, probably drop a level at your own club.
Didn't feel at home, means you have moved recently and it us likely to happen at the next club you go to.
Moving jobs, same as new to area if that is the case.
This is an amateur game for 99% of us on the forum. Be part of your club, make a difference at your club and support it.

Defo don't agree with this. People can improve if they put the time and effort in, regardless of age. The rest I agree in principle with though.

It's a fair point. Probably 30 is the point where it is unlikely that you will improve enough to warrant changing clubs in order to play a higher standard.

35+ maybe, but again, if they are doing proper training and not just a bit of slap and tickle and a few club nets then even at 30 people can improve. The biggest thing really at 35+ is fitness! not ability. If they are fit enough to play and move in the field at 40 then they can still play. It's probably not regular to find 25+ players looking to train that hard though in fairness.
-
Agree with most of what Stevo us saying and also with ProC.
My club had been struggling for few years, I did everything in my capacity to help keep things going but after a fall out with manager last year I decided to call it a day. I have 3,4 other clubs who play a better standard and are happy to accommodate me. Since then my old club has been very nice to me asking me to have a rethink and let bygones be bygones.
My club has a very poor set up and only just managed to get by through last few seasons. Only one team, struggle to get 11 players on most weekends, no proper ground, etc etc. The new clubs I have been netting with have great set up.

Moving clubs due to having relocated over the winter. Moved from Blankney CC up in Lincolnshire to Truro CC down in Cornwall (bit of a trek, I think you'll all agree...). Had to move with my parents, but hoping to go into the RAF at some point so I'll probably be spending a couple of seasons around Bedfordshire and then back up to Lincolnshire, so plenty of awkward nets knowing nobody for me!
-
At least you will become an expert in net small talk!

Ah RAF Halton.. A joy. What trade are you looking at?

I've recently relocated, and while I'm happy to do the hour and a bit drive back to my old club for this season at least, there may come a time when I need to find a more local club. However, I'm wary of what sort of club to try - it seems to easy to overestimate your own ability and potentially look at a fool at the first net - which can be an awkward experience anyway.

new area, try 4 or 5 different clubs of varying standards. That way you can find the one that most suits what you want out of your cricket. Some people live for the 'I play ECB Prem cricket'.. Some are more interested in getting to open the batting or bowling each week regardless of form and choose div 345.
Higher you go, the more 'pressure' there is because they expect you to score runs, take wickets etc. So moving a div or two lower maintains the general standard but lessens the pressure to perform week in week out, hopefully leading to a more enjoyable game for yourself. after all, that's what amateur cricket is about.

Great response^^^^

I moved to my current club about 5 years ago and have loved every minute of it. Previous club (where I was a colt and played a bit of adult cricket after a break between 19-25) were going backwards, had been relegated 5 years in a row and just accepted relegation before the season had started. Their once thriving colts section now didnt exist and the club really was on its last legs so I decided to move to the closest team to them.
Since i have its been great, made some really great mates and now have a great place to go along and play cricket and socialise. Its really worked out for me.
So for this year I am now captaining the 5's at my club and we are now in the league as my old club's first team. I still know quite a few of the lads at my old club so it should be an interesting two games. When we play them at home its my birthday as well so I'm hoping to celebrate by smashing them :)
-
Moving clubs ? this was my dilemma having been approached to captain a local clubs 4Th team this season I was tempted because i would not have to travel to home games but loyalty stopped me due to 2 seasons ago my then club ( who i had played for for 25 seasons ) brought in 12 new players which led to me and other older club members not getting a game and i was ready to pack in playing if the club I now play for had not come in for me.
-
Seriously considering changing clubs as I now have a 'commute' of over an hour to a home game! Problem being that a change in club would potentially mean a move to the Chilterns League - has anyone played in the league before and/or know what the standard is like? I was playing TVL div 4 last season. I could stay in TVL but not sure the club in the village I live in would be the most socialable of clubs and I like to have a beer or 2 after a game of cricket!
-
Just signed for a new club as player coach. Now looking forward to the season more than I have done for the past few years.

Taplow would be the club I would join. Have you played against them before? Decent/socialable bunch of lads? Will be netting there next week for first time.

Shame we won't get to play against each other on the 10th May now!!

Taplow is a nice setup. Only played there once in an October game (on an unbelievable dry track). Don't know much about the lads their but one of our (Marlow) best players started at Taplow - Graeme Paskins, ex Bucks keeper. You can't be far away from Marlow actually - great track, ground, 3 teams and a chance to play Div 4 or higher.

Yeh it's a shame as I was looking forward to it. Enjoyed my only trip to Hurst, even if we got our proverbial handed to us on a plate, and a great bunch of lads to boot.
I'm living in Burnham now, about a 5 minute drive from the ground.

Marlow isn't too far away no and I hadn't considered them to be honest. I'll take a look at them but I'd imagine I'll give Taplow a go.
Not sure I'd want to play cricket in October so might give that one a miss if they have any October fixtures.

why not in Oct?? It's not cold in Oct at all, in fact, in the last few years it's been nice weather and the wickets are usually still decent. Why rush to finish the season!!

well the track we played on looked so bare it could of been in Asia but they were taking singles to cover because nobody fancied wading through the paddy field developing on the rest of the square. It's can be an interesting experience. Up in Yorkshire at Arthington, they play until late October. Up their it's either nice or bloody awful, no half measures on the weather front.
-
I've just signed for the biggest club in my area, for their 2s which is a big step up, I held my own in pre-season nets but the bowling was noticeably better.
I've been made to feel very welcome which is ace, and we had our first match yesterday - I was bowled out for 6 to one that nipped back a tiny bit but an inch off the deck. Am gutted I didn't get a dream start, but that's when the hard work starts!
-
Decided to move clubs , ,had first practice match on Saturday, great bunch of lads and a really nice ground/set up
Feel a bit gutted,i didn't make the move sooner really
Looking forward to the season for the first time in a coupla years.
Batted crap tho!ha. Just didn't time a full bunga, and holed out to mid on.....I never learn! Ho hum
Managed a coupla wickets tho

i'm giving some serious thought to moving on
the only thing holding me back is that i've been here for the last 20 years plus since i was a kid, its like a home from home and i feel a really strong bond to the club.
i'm sick of the total apathy from the the players and committee
lack of anyone looking to take the smallest bit of responsibility
everything is last minute and half arsed
having to beg and twist the arm of players to turn out for you every week like they are doing you a favour
players are drifting away and we're not recruiting enough to strengthen its just pluging holes
i've been on the committee for the last 10 years+, development officer, treasurer, sunday and sat captain, secretary etc
its just all so bloody hard to drive something forward, plenty of people talking about things nobody willing to do it
the same 2 or 3 are left to do everything from filling the committee roles, captaining sides, organising the dinner, the tour, quiz nights, the club day, cricket force
had selction last night and out of 50+ players couldnt get 22 for the first league game, its seriously pissed me off
i've tried to drive things forward but people run a mile if there is chance of them having to do something to help
there are probably a lot of positives but all i can see at the moment is the negatives
there are a few lads that share my frustration and i havnt walked away becuase of them but more becuase i love the club but just not enjoying being part of it anymore
might play a few games for someone else on a sunday and see how i feel about it
has anyone moved on after being with a club for so long? any advice?
i've got loads to offer but just feel like all my efforts are in wasted here
-
I moved on from a club I spent 15+ years at due to work and it was like a breath of fresh air after a dodgy initial period.

What's the worst that can happen if you where to leave? I seriously doubt that if push came to shove and the club was going to fold that no one would step up and take over. Chance your arm somewhere else, rediscover your love of the game and if it doesnt work out else where you can return to enjoying yourself at your previous club but with other people doing the run around. I'm quickly becoming more involved in my club, this will be my fourth year and having volunteered to sort out the clubs website and been lumped with organising the kit my presence on the committee was requested and a new role made to accomodate me. I can only assume that it is because I am the only person of my age that has actually shown an interest to pitch in and help out, all the other blokes are happy to just rock up and play when they feel like it. I haven't got enough fingers and toes to count the guys who I haven't seen at at least one of the 7 work parties I have attended in my time here. It's (No Swearing Please).
-
I moved from my only club of 25 years last year to play closer to home due to a family illness. The new club was ok but it was hard to get really involved whilst my focus was on home.
I completely lost my fitness base and felt sorry for the sides I played as I went from a pinched nerve in the spine to a swollen knee to a neck injury. I'm over 40 if you haven't guessed.
The positive thing was that got a good opportunity to learn about my cricket and meet some good blokes. Witnessed some great innings and played with some great young cricketers.
It's funny reading the number of games you get in the UK. Adelaide Turf was a 9 round 2 day comp or 18 round 1 day comp last summer due to 20/20 being run on Saturdays. I played in the Para District C A and it was 14 games (4 x 2 days, then 7 x 1 days, then 3 x 2 days). Differences were the PDCA is hard wicket.
I'm possibly going back to the old club next season (oct) but will make up my mind once I know how things are on the homefront.
-
I hear what you are saying. I had some issues with how my club was being run. After watching others leave and then an entire under 17 side leave I knew it was time.
Having issues on the homefront meant that I knew another season of being frustrated with some off field issues was going to be too difficult.
I was annoyed that I had to choose because of the poor administration and it took a few months to let go of this but I did and I'm better off for it. I feel reenergised and have learned as much as I could about how the other club runs. No system is perfect.
The wheels will still turn if you leave and if you do it right you can always go back if you feel it's time. At the end of the day all that matters is that you are happy with your cricket.

Going to be moving clubs mid season due to getting a job in Devon. Found a decent looking club called Thorverton which is about 5 minutes from where I will be living. Emailed them to ask about joining and got a reply on the same day which was great. Not sure how the standard compares from the Devon Leauges to the Warwickshire Leauge that I currently play 1st XI in. Really excited for a new challenge and to get involved with a new club although It will be strange considering I've been going to my old club my whole life minus a few years while I was at uni, but I can't wait.
-
Feel free to message me if you want to play cricket in Cornwall this summer. The in I play at are recruiting for next year and welcome any new members. It's a part town so lots of good nights out and a very sociable bunch. This is Newquay!!!
-
Newquay is also a very seasonal town so the summer is busy and when all jobs are available as well so if anyone fancies a change to their normal summer it would be a good experience. Work would be pretty easy to find and there are places to stay. Any young lads 18-25 fancy the party environment for the summer then Newquay is definitely the place to come.
-
I'm in a bit of a dilemma as the season is just around the corner, I'm away at uni until late June which means for the first 2 months of the season I'd have to travel a 200 mile round trip for a home game! However, I've been offered to play for a club less than a mile away from where I live at university, and get paid to play too.
Don't want to leave my current club as I've played there since I was 6 years old! But I'd save/make money if I did!
-
Urrrm, play for one club while you're away and the other when you're home?
I can't imagine you're likely to need to do a club transfer if your clubs are 100 miles away from each other
-
I'm in a bit of a dilemma as the season is just around the corner, I'm away at uni until late June which means for the first 2 months of the season I'd have to travel a 200 mile round trip for a home game! However, I've been offered to play for a club less than a mile away from where I live at university, and get paid to play too.
Don't want to leave my current club as I've played there since I was 6 years old! But I'd save/make money if I did!
Probably piss down until June in minehead!
What's a 200 mile drive to play on that wicket!

play for the local team until the end of uni or maybe the away games for minehead and i'll play the home games ;)

I've started playing again last season after quite a few years out. I moved to a new area so just stopped to chat one night when I saw them netting. It's good to meet a new group of people with shared interests but it's never certain that their ethos will be the same as yours so it's definitely daunting. Luckily I'm for ever meeting new people with the work I do so I don't mind the "getting to know you" phase. And when it comes to nets I'll honestly net anywhere with anyone when ever I can... Just ask the vitas boys!!! I have to admit though I hanker for a game back at my old club where I started playing. My best mate from being kids who got me Playing at 12 years old is club captain of their firsts.. He kept playing throughout the dark years(uni, beer and women) and I moved away. @RF
I was way better than him as kids so I can only guess it would be me as captain if I'd stayed!!!! [emoji6][emoji3][emoji6][emoji3][emoji12][emoji15][emoji15][emoji15][emoji15]
The ground was amazing to play on so fingers crossed I get a game in there soon in the not too distant future!!!

@Boondougal haha, only just seen this, bet you thought you got away with it!
I'd love it if you came down for a game, even it was just on a Sunday.
It'd be interesting to see if you can get it off the square nowadays.
What's happened to your leg spin?

Right, the club I am at currently has a chairman who is stats obsessed and firmly believes his sons are the best things since sliced bread. His son is first team capt and is banging on about 'competition' and that 'no ones place is certain'.. In all honesty, that means that his brother and two others in the top 6 are untouchable and there are only 2 of us that will be vulnerable. My 2013 club (who are in teh same league) still want me back as I scored really well and I'm seriously tempted to move back to them as I really can't be bothered watchign over my back all season. It affected me last season I think as I knew they were waiting for me to mess up and I hated it, it made me hav ea bad season as I never felt settled or had confidence.
Would you guys move to where you know you had their confidence or would you stay and 'fight' for a place?
-
Same sort of issue for me,
Been playing 4ths last season and also Sunday's, yet not good enough to keep a place but helped the Sunday's gain promotion,
Again the club is ran by a couple of names, and so some of us aren't good enough to keep a place,
So I've bugged out and am joining a new team for next year, already after 2 nets the guys are ten times as welcoming as the other team so looking forward to playing for my new team next season
-
yeah I only avg'd 28 last year in the league which is pretty poor. I did have 5 bad decisions out of 11 games by the umpires which didn't help but still. I dunno, I don't want to keep moving clubs but I'm not prepared to put up with being messed about, especially when they aren't better players.
-
Pro cricketer you are welcome to come and play for my village team there is a Feb post on here with more details i dont think the club is to far away from where you are we play we play in the Worcester County league.
There would be no concerns regarding getting a game has we have to chase players each week to play.
Or contact me and I will give any information you require.
Also you why should you have to watch your back knowing others are waiting for you to fail
If it was me I would be away faster than a rat up a drainpipe.

Leave
No questions,, just do it
Life is waaay to short
I've had the same issues as you described in years gone past, players friends etc come in who think they are better than they actually are, but get preferential treatment because their drinking buddies/family or whatever
-
If you have no real allegiance to the club you are at and you can get at least the same level of cricket and practice somewhere else where you can enjoy it more then I would seriously consider moving.

I'm most likely going to be moving on this year. I'm 90% set on the move the only thing keeping me is the fact I've been at my current club 14 years! Last year I really struggled and didn't enjoy it one bit (even missed last 2 games to play football - something I never thought I'd do, always cricket first) and it is almost certain I'll be playing 2nd team cricket this season, although my captain says I will have a role to play at some point.
I've been offered first team cricket at another club in the same division and have really enjoyed netting with them and they've made me feel welcome. They have also started making major improvements to the ground/facilities. Up until the other day I was convinced I would stay but I woke the other day and was clear in my mind it was the right time to move on. I think a fresh start with a new team and a new environment will reignite my passion for the game.
Has anyone else had any experience of moving on after a long time at a club? I have drafted an e-mail which I will circulate to my current captain and senior figures at the club explaining my decision to make sure they understand. I don't want to fall out with anyone as I've made good friends there, especially with some non players.

@RF leg spin went the way of my diet and turned into a 6 course meal consisting of pie.
We are on for a Sunday! Just need to get my hard outer shell on in preparation for the ... My havn't you filled out banter.
When you get your fixtures pic a date... Obviously don't want to take someone's place but I will need a bit of notice.

I'm moving clubs again having not played really last season (apart from one game less than 24 hrs after arriving home from Malaysia) due to... 'administrative reasons' at my Cornish club. Glad to be getting back in the saddle to be honest, nets have been going so well... It really feels like I can kick on this year and start to fulfil my potential.
Looking forward to playing with my new team- nice group of lads, bit of experience in there, and they want me in the top 4. I'm happy!

Thinking of changing clubs for the upcoming season.
Was the highest run scorer at my club last season (included 5 100s), turned up to the AGM in November and not a single mention. Instead ended up getting slated infront of the whole club for not playing in the first's. Been messed about plenty of times in previous seasons with other players getting selected ahead of me and not wanting to play with certain individuals in the first's. So I have valid reasons.
Pretty much been told that I have to play for the side I'm selected for and cannot pick and choose. I rather play with my mates in the seconds and enjoy my game. Got to a point last season where I skipped some games because I was being forced to play for a side I didn't want to.
Got plenty of mates at other clubs who would happily accommodate me. Just thought I would be loyal and play my last season in England at the club I've played at for the past few years
-
I've moved clubs this season after 7 years at my last club. Best decision I have made and wish I did it a couple of seasons ago. No regrets so far....

lol! What's loyal about staying with a club and dictating to them when and where they select you and throwing your dummy out of the pram and not playing when they don't change all their plans to suit you? If you're so anti these people in the 1st eleven that it's stopping you playing at the highest standard you can, I'd say you need to move clubs, not hang around in the 2nd team, cash in on the big scores and then moan as if it's everyone else's fault. Take control of your situation.

It's always not as simple. Clubs will say 'the club comes first, do as you are told', however.. it's amateur cricket, not professional cricket. The way you run a team is totally different. I think that's what is being lost in teh amateur game, that club feel. Every club is becoming so focused on winning and being 'professional' that they are abusing their players.
At the end of the day, players PAY to play cricket. You as a club HAVE to provide them with what they want for their time and money. That's why I'm personally against clubs who pay players, that isn't the sign of a good club, it's the sign of a club that can't produce and keep it's own players. Big clubs tend to use and abuse players in the pursuit of victory. Smaller clubs just operate as a actual club, where the players tend to play for enjoyment and enjoy seeing each other do well in teh knowledge that if they have 3 bad games (say given out LBW when they shouldn't, get a jaffa etc) they won't be dropped down the order/teams etc

We're in the progress of moving house and my mrs spotted a house she liked, so we went and had a look. It turned out to be on the door step of our local rivals, she had the tenacity to suggest I could move clubs! I took it akin to being told she would be removing my testicles with the butter knife.

I am. With a bit of regret as it's the club I've played for since I was 8 or 9 but the final straw came just before last season when I was replaced as skipper, without anyone having the decency to tell me - until I tried to pick a team for the first game and one of the lads asked me if I knew I'd been replaced! So I've decamped to the local rivals who I've always got on with, they seem a good set of blokes and hopefully the enjoyment will return. Oh, and our first game is against my old team... Just hoping I impress in the nets and get picked :D
-
Bit much but didnt your club have an AGM in my experience most who want to be captain attend or request the minutes
-
I play for the same club I played my first ever game of cricket for when I was 9 years old. Move forward 18 years and the club has gone from having 3 saturday XI's and 2 sunday XI's to 2 and 1 respectively. Last summer I worked regularly on weekends but had some free sundays and played but I think of the 8 or so games I played only once we were able to field a full XI. It's sort of embarrassing to turn up with not a full team and also just sucks constantly playing with a hand tied behind your back. There is part of me that wants to stay and be loyal to the club I've played for since I was 9 but also part of me wants to find a new club that isn't struggling, but then I'm just contributing more to its struggles.
-
Yes turning up without a full team is not much fun but moving on is not always the move for instance with your availibilty you might have to fight for selection maybe your best option is to stay where you are that way you know you will get a game when work allows.
-

The new skipper had been approached to do the job before the end of the season. No issues with being replaced, just would have been decent to inform me after 15 years playing for them.
They finished second bottom of the same league we finished second top in when I was skipper so that's some consolation :o

From my experience being a skipper is such a thankless task, everyone else on the field always thinking they know best lol.

I understand your dilemma, I went through a similar kind of thing in 2014, I was often playing in sides 1 or 2 short and even having to scratch a few matches. It was with heavy heart that I went in search of cricket elsewhere, I felt very disloyal for doing so and, understanably, thoroughly p***ed off my skipper. Move onto 2015, after a bit of a search I found myself a new club and realise with hindsight it was totally the right move, thoroughly enjoyed the season and hopefully this'll be the last club I play for before I hang up my boots for good. I think sometimes you just have to be a bit selfish, unless your current club has some big plans about how it'll turn things around.
-
I'm not moving clubs, but looking to get into weekend cricket again.
Been playing Last Man Stands cricket the last 2 seasons, and really enjoyed it!
-
Ive re-signed for my previous club for this season after 2 years away at a different club playing only intermittently
Played around 15 matches in the last 2 seasons and have managed to do some things that I always missed out on due to cricket commitments (on and off the field) - weddings, festivals, camping etc
Whilst I've had great couple of summers I have to say I'm really looking forward to playing properly for my home-town club again.
Needless to say, I've ordered some new kit and I'm chomping at the bit to get going. Roll on April!!
-
This season will be my second season back at my new club. I played for them from the age of 7 until the age of 12 to try and give myself the best chance to break onto the county scene as many players from this club had previously played at a county level. I spent 5 years at the club winning two colts league titles and then starting my adult career. During the 2014 season I was becoming very eager to play in the 2nd XI as I frequently trained with them and played in the Development A side on Sundays. Just before the start of the 2015 league season I decided I needed a fresh start and decided to move back to my original team that had dramatically transformed and had anew pavilion, a fantastic square (1st and 2nd games par score was 280-300 towards the end of the season) and the top sides were playing at their respective top or second tiers in the league. I'm so glad I moved back as even though I had to work my way up through the sides starting in the 4th XI (scoring 51 on debut which I thought wasn't too bad as I am more of a bowling all rounder batting at number 4) and then playing most of my season in the 3rd XI playing an important role in winning the league and going on to play 5 games in the 2nd XI. I'm really looking forward to this season as last season I felt like a completely different player, hoping I can continue where I left off last season.
-
I will hopefully be playing for a ncl prem club on Saturdays if training goes well on Saturday
-
This winter was my first winter with my new club and its been a real challenge. Last season I finished playing in the 2s and felt very happy there. This winter I've been netting with our 1s and 2s, the sessions have been harder than ever but so satisfying as I can feel myself improving week by week. Another advantage I found with training with our 1s and 2s is I had plenty of opportunities to talk to a our first team spinner and get some advice which will hopefully allow me to improve enough to play in our first team in the future. By training with our top 2 teams I have also got the opportunity to bowl at some county 2s players which has been an amazing experience as they really push you to the best of your ability.
-
I was all set to move clubs this season, it would have been my second move in as many seasons. But a old knee injury has flared up and might put an end to my season before it starts.

Our club is 99% going to the wall, I travelled 20 miles to a home game. Long way for the wife to bring the kids every Saturday!! Would have to choose between same or higher league within a few miles or dropping down so she could walk to a home game.......decisions, decisions

I'm in the same boat, played for the same club all my life but leaving them this year to play for the club close to where we've moved to. 20 miles to home games and about 100 mile average away trip was just too much.

A question for you guys.
If you've not been born and bred into a club, what is it that makes you want to join or stay at a club and leave the team you've always been with?
Not only are we looking to try and recruit new people into the club to help boost numbers and help the club grow, but also maintain and keep the people we have and past players who have stopped playing all together.
Any responses would be gratefully appreciated :)

I'm changing, thought I'd sorted my choice of club but got invited to net with a second (very different) club and now quite like them both... Nightmare!

What's the positives to the clubs that makes you want to pick them over the other mate? :)

What's the positives to the clubs that makes you want to pick them over the other mate? :)
One is a big club, 4 league sides, in the West of england premier league div 3, all the youth teams, very posh, nice setup at their own ground etc with all the obvious advantages that come with that kind of thing, plus my other half plays for their ladies side. Disadvantages - whilst I'd like the challenge of a higher level (I've mostly played div 2/3 of the bristol league the last few years), realistically I wouldn't be a regular in the first team (if I can get in it of course!), so I'd possibly be in their 2s, who play a decent standard but don't seem to be much of a side (leagues got rearranged last year and they've clearly gone in too high), with a big variation of players each week. Need to have a chat with the club and see where they think I'd fit in tbh.
Other club is a two team affair so much smaller, div 5 of the local leagues. Lovely ground, bit closer to me too. Very nice bunch from early impressions and having played against them before in friendlies etc, getting on very well with them at nets/indoor games. From what I've seen I think I'd be one of the better players at the club, but not hugely so. The lad who invited me along reckons I'd bat top 4 and possibly open the bowling too so that's a definite advantage! Disadvantages - a little lower in the leagues (not hugely fussed by this, especially as they seem a te#? on the up), they don't play Sundays/midweek so I'd need a second club, although that could be sorted by playing Sundays for the other side. Possibly annoy the missus as she thought I was going to her club ha.
So I'm torn! Attracted by the prospect of being one of the key players at the smaller club, which I know brings out the best in my cricket. Also enjoying training with players much better than I am at the bigger club, I've been netting with their 1s which has been good, 2s net looks a bit disappointing. Leaning towards the smaller side at present, but we shall see, it's difficult!

Started playing in 2011 and lived in Northants, I picked the local side as it was.. well.. local. Didn't overly care about level etc as I was just starting.
2013 I moved down to glos and where I work essentially has a works team but their management decided their current players were 'far superior' and I'd not get in their 1's as a number 5.. I didn't bother joining as I wanted to bat 5 in a 1's, not be a filler in or play 2/3/4's.
So, I found another local club who were 2 divs higher in wepl and opened in their 1's, hence learning to open properly. Nice ground, much bigger club etc but feels more like a collection of players who turn up, play then mainly go home.. not really a 'club' (just my opinion).. so 2014 the work team said they were going to kick out a few players who were cliquey and open it up, they did so I joined. It's now had two promotions and is in the same div as I was in in 2013 but isn't quite as nice a ground, doesn't have 4 teams or youth set up but tbh, it feels like a club rather than a collection of people. Plus, I don't really care if there aren't kids around as I get enough of them at the barn now !!
For me, the ground has to be decent because what's the point playing on a crap ground, but apart from that... it's where you will get the game you want and play with mates. Again, no point going to a big club to feel like a bit part player who is there to fill in and pay for paid, overseas or coaches after all
-
I think it's who you play with that matters as that determines your level of enjoyment. Other factors are important but secondary.
-
Totally agree with the above.
-
I've played for 40yrs now, and whilst oop north I moved clubs a few times, mostly due to numbers dropping, or clubs folding etc.
I then sort of semi retired when I moved down sarf,(or so I thought) I played friendlies for a team in Somerset and a team near Bristol, so that was good.
But missed the Saturday games, so started up at a local club, this was rubbish, and in the end I left there and was gonna give up altogether, but ended up playing for a lovely village team for the last three seasons,(easy standard, got a few trophies) , but after complete team changes, with many of the older players not getting a game and the new faces basically a bunch of tools!
Soo, new season and a new club
Netted with them, and feels more like a friendly village team
A lot less ego,s which I hate, and all the lads seem keen to chip in with bowling in the nets, putting the nets out and away etc
No childish pee taking, that I find masks insecurity in a players own abilities
All things I've found over the years that make joining and playing for a club more enjoyable for all
-

it is true i have moved every 2 years for the past 18 and sick of up-rooting and starting again, it is true the journey you go through is better than individual moments
-
I'll second most of the opinions here, having moved clubs out of choice or necessity a fair few times over the past 30-odd years. The most important thing is the people and the intangible club spirit. When I was last looking for a new club at the start of 2015, I went to every pre-season net session of one club I had ambitions to join. They were well attended and well organised but I just felt like an outsider even though I'd made it clear to them that I was keen to play for them that season. Come April I felt uncomfortable about the prospect of playing for them, so I ended up taking up @Warneymonster's invite to play for Kempton, a similar size club, and it couldn't have been more different. I was made to feel welcome and included and it was notable to me that it was less cliquey than many other clubs, the 1st teamers didn't act as if they were superior and mucked in with everyone else. without giving it a try it's hard to tell what the atmosphere in a club is going to be like.
-
@felix that's because you're a p155head like the rest of us at kempton.
Available for the 3's this year should I be dropped from the 1's, no chance I'm playing for the 2's while that idiot is captain
-
@felix Available for the 3's this year should I be dropped from the 1's, no chance I'm playing for the 2's while that idiot is captain
Oh really? Yeah I did a bit of a double-take about that announcement, unbelievable! But that's probably not a conversation for a public forum...
-
Wherever we play we need to feel welcomed and part of the setup and if the club has nice facilities it's a bonus but i still see far to many clubs run by club Cliques both on and oFf the field also seen to many guys treated as if they are only in the team to make up the numbers clubs take there money bat them at 11 and stick them all afternoon on the boundary

Agree with @Seniorplayer, I started back a few years ago to a club 20 miles away because of the lads i was playing with. It does make a difference, we'd all have a drink together, nights out, stag do's etc.
Now with the club possibly folding, i need to really look for somewhere closer. The closest club to me play in the league my current team moved out of, some poor teams and horrendous grounds. Its a balancing act getting a club close enough that its not a chore for her indoors to bring the kids and decent standard, grounds and teammates
-
Wherever we play we need to feel welcomed and part of the setup and if the club has nice facilities it's a bonus but i still see far to many clubs run by club Cliques both on and oFf the field also seen to many guys treated as if they are only in the team to make up the numbers clubs take there money bat them at 11 and stick them all afternoon on the boundary
Ah the old TFC. Many 'big' clubs do that to players. Competitive cricket and all that BS
-

That's the reason why i wouldn't play for a so called big club avoid them like a plague
-

Aren't you part of the first team of a so called big club that wanted to send colts to play top of the league?
-
One is a big club, 4 league sides, in the West of england premier league div 3, all the youth teams, very posh, nice setup at their own ground etc with all the obvious advantages that come with that kind of thing, plus my other half plays for their ladies side.
Leaning towards the smaller side at present, but we shall see, it's difficult!
i know the bigger club but Who are the smaller club @edge

Soo, new season and a new club
Netted with them, and feels more like a friendly village team
A lot LESS EGO'S
Just you wait till I turn up to nets!!!!! in my gold lame cricket kit and diamond encrusted bat

I am more concerned about how you will get your helmet on over your jewel-covered crown! ;)

I am at present attaching a tiara to the front of cap

Question... Do I turn up at my first net for new club with a new XP80 and risk breaking it or go with my trusty Hattori/Purist and play it safe??

Until you know how they bowl and what balls they use in the nets, play it safe!!
-
That's why I have a £22.50 MSR in the bag. At the end of the day, it may not come off the same but if you have good technique that will always be appreciated.

Personally would Never take a new bat to nets

Take the XP80 to show off, and use one of your older bats to find out the quality of balls and bowling
-
Yesterday was my first proper net with Hosk CC (Watlington CC). After being cleaned up second ball, I knuckled down and batted alright (room for improvement). Really enjoyed the net.

Good Lord!! @jblowe - you weren't cleaned up by the actual Hosk were you?
-
Nope. One of the first team lobbed one up. I as inspecting the ceiling when the ball passed me.

Mr Hosk, the leggie!.
It was a good net Jason, once someone turned up with the keys to get in

I'm going into an enforced club move as I've relocated to London from South Wales. You've 0robably seen the thread...
Still haven't worked out which club to join though, as I don't really know any cricketers locally and I'm in the middle of trying to move house. Should start putting out feelers though really.

You were at Panteg right Rich?
We've come back into the league and you scurry off ;)
Last time I came down to you there was that questionable tie ;)
-
that's right Cal, I was at Panteg but I've moved on now. the 2s have a new captain for this season so i doubt there will be a repeat of the fireworks, although i wasn't there so i don't know what happened.
good to hear that Tata Steel are back - it's a nice ground, if a bit low scoring.

That's a shame, was hoping you would nick one behind ;)
Yeah, we've got a much better team than the last time we were promoted with many of the boys who were opposed to us joining the WPL2 who left have now returned.
Good luck in your new club anyways!
-
Received an email yesterday asking if I be interested in moving as the club want a couple of experience players to help the young players learn on match day iif I were to take up the offer they will probably think they are batting with there Grandad.

If you fancy driving down to forest row every week (it's not been unknown for our players to do this), we would be more than welcoming!
-
@Seniorplayer it's not an invite from the club you briefly moved to last season, is it? ;)

You mean the club that took my Subs money and the Captain asked to bat as long as I could protect the kids then dropped me for slow scoring ? And couldn't be bother to tell me No ts not them.
It's nice to be asked but I won't be moving.

Sorry mate only just seen this! Uni Staff - one of their players whose wife plays in the same ladies side as my gf found out I was looking for a new club and invited me to their nets, they seem like a really good bunch so pretty tempted to move to them.

I remember you said them now. Don't think you can go wrong with either team really. Both nice grounds, uni staff maybe able to accommodate your cricket bag a bit easier ;)

Ha! I'm a sucker for a big bag, current one is a lot smaller than the previous..! Change to something a bit more manageable definitely coming before the season starts though.
For sure they're both good clubs, that's why choosing is tricky! Looking forward to a new start, season can't come soon enough.

Thinking about moving clubs, tough choice if anyone can offer impartial advice?
Current team I'm at I have no chance of getting in the 1s as there are 2 spinners bowling in tandem, pro who bowls and and OA coming inside the next month.
2s got relegated and play in a league that's getting to the point of friendly cricket, but I'm almost certain to be top order bat and 1st change bowler getting 8 overs min (got 12 in a friendly and 14 in first game of season). But I was told by team mate in private I looked like I didn't care when I was batting (5 ball duck)
I got a text last week asking me to go and train with a much stronger team in a much stronger league, former test pro and a county coach and players pushing to make a career from the sport, so again unlikely to play 1s (I think), the 2s appears on paper to play a much tougher standard. Needless to say my head is turned by the prospect in front but don't know what is the better opportunity.
what would you do?
-
I assume you are in your early 20's if I read your profile correctly?
If so, then the normal advice would be to always try to play as high a standard as possible whilst you have the chance?
By the time you get to my age, you may be more than happy to play a more relaxed level! ;)
-

yeh im 24
-
Your other point is always a little tougher! If you play in the 1st XI with top notch players then that means you are unlikely to get a bowl and bat down the order.
So maybe decide what you want out of matches - I assume you would like to bowl 6-8 overs minimum as a rule and bat in the mid order preferably. And then find a team where your standard would allow you to do that. It is a balance and you may need to try more than one team, but worth trying so that you get enjoyment out of matches!!
-
Unless you are planning to be a pro, or break some premiership league records, my humble opinion is to play where you get the most out of it.
Most of us work all week, get stressy, have to deal with kids / teens / wives, and look to our Saturday's cricket as something pleasurable, a well-deserved treat at the end of a week.
Therefore, play where you enjoy it the most, with people that you like and at a level where you are genuinely contributing and not just making up the numbers. The rest doesn't matter.

Having Readi the post a couple of times it really does depend what your goals are what do you want to achieve you may not get into your clubs first team are you content with being a top order bat and first change bowler myself and many would be also only you know if your teammates look as if you didn't care comment is correct. As for moving to a stronger club in a stronger league do you want the challange ?in the knowledge that players there want to turn pro yes it's going to be tougher but can you step up ? Will you get a regular game ? Yes it's nice to be asked and you won't know the answers unless you take the opportunity.
But as others have written there could be downsides .
-
Go to the team which will make you a better player not the team where you will play the most.
Fact is a year of dominating and being the best won't teach you anything. Look at the club with more than just "playing opprrtunities" is the coach good?, how many attend training? Will they invest in you? In 12 month you want to look back and say "I'm a better player than I was last year. That's all any of us can achieve.
Going down a level isn't going to hurt if you go to an improvement environment :-)
Go well and get better 👍
-
Ultimately I want to play at the best standard I can whilst having an impact.
I've been told by Vice Chairman who I've only met twice that I'd have an impact on Saturday teams and after one session apparently the lads rated me as a bowler. But I'm bound to be told that?
-
I'd always try and play where you think you'll enjoy it most, whatever that means for you.
I know a lad who comes from London to the west country every week to bat 9 and bowl the odd few overs in an ECB prem side, he loves that and clearly didn't enjoy it when he was playing a bigger role in a 2s side, but I think it's fair to say most of us would hate that! Personally, I always want to be getting a good game above all else, which can be tricky as an all-rounder to find the balance between standard and getting both your batting/bowling in.
In your situation, bit close to the start of the season to be thinking about moving isn't it?! I'd consider sticking where you are and seeing if the new club will let you train with them but play just friendly cricket for them this year, which would hopefully give you a good idea where you fit in and if you like playing with them or not so you can make the right decision next year.

No don't think they would mislead you but unless one of them is match day Captain or vice how much weight does there rating of your bowling carry on matchday. Also hope everything works out successfully for you.

Fully agree. The only down side to it is that in lower divisions, sometimes you end up playing against teams which mostly consist of promising colts and old timers..playing against such oppositions can lead to more frustration and feel like you wasted your entire day. One can only enjoy if there is a fine balance of enjoyment and competitiveness.

This old timer enjoys scoring runs against anyone.

Yeah and this old timer too

me too. at my age I will happily take runs off a non cricketer in black trainers bowling pies.

First game for new club today
Cracking bunch of lads, glad I chose not to retire,, it's been a long winter, and it was nice to feel bat on ball
And I got to bat for a bit with Mr Hosk himself
-
First game for the new club - great game and bunch of lads - great grounds and a better standard than I used to play at - and my opening partner owns his own cricket business - great deal that is!

I've been living in South Birmingham (Kings Heath) for a couple of years now and this season I decided to join Kings Heath CC rather than travelling to the depths of Worcestershire to play. They're a good bunch, with a nice ground and friendly people. Let me know if you want to discuss this further.

They knew who i was too, the captain came over and said hello and that was it, he was out early and never came back over and no one else chatted at all even when i helped out putting some of the stuff away at the end of the game. Shame as its local to me but will have another look somewhere else i guess

Hi guys I am considering moving club next season. Could you guys recommend clubs in or around Wolverhampton.

Hi guys I am considering moving club next season. Could you guys recommend clubs in or around Wolverhampton.
How about Wolverhampton ?? We are there Thursday and it’s a lovely ground and has a 3/4ths ground next to it which looks nice
-
There are around 7 clubs in wolverhampton. Wolverhampton CC is a choice and reasonable distance and i have played against them so know few as well. Might consider that. If anymore takers please do suggest.
Thanks @RPC/Blueroom Cricket - Adie
-
And BTW are you gonna be there this thursday or you were there?
-
Bronze are ok. They are more Walsall but close enough
-
Tempted to move clubs in the Cheltenham/Gloucester area over the winter as availability at our club has been shocking. Want to drop a level as I am fed up of losing every week!
-
I’m looking for new club. Hampshire area I’m based in Basingstoke but don’t want to play there. Anyone looking for players next year get it touch. Looking to play aokay standard thanks
-
I am tired of our brainless captains that's why i want to move. Been stuck at number 7/8 being a batsman and after proving myself so many times. Cant waste another year waiting for things to change.

Can’t blame you. 7+ isn’t a batting slot so unless you’re bowling (in which case it’s fine) then move on and leave them to it

I am either moving clubs or giving up!!! I hate cricket

by this late stage of the season i hate cricket but this season has been different and dont want the season to end!
Stick at it - you are a long time retired.

I have FINALLY moved to Birmingham. Hallelujah! Now I just need a club.
I'm in the Brindley Place area, don't want to travel too far really! Looking to have fun and play at an OK standard, as opposed to taking it too seriously like I used to.
I haven't played consistently for a couple of years, but I'm a decent batsman and was once a good leg-spinner. Strong fielder. Need some training though :(

Happy to invite you to our nets @billyb . Half way up the warwickshire league, we are on the way up. Train at forward drive in walking distance of Brindleyplace and have players who can get you to games. We are looking for for a spinner as well. Pm me, ill happily recommend other clubs if iwe are not for you as well

Yep moving clubs next season...... Essex Suffolk border!
Probably Sudbury
-
As I am @Canners after 18 years at the same club - I have decided its time for a change. A number of reasons - nothing negative towards my former club - in fact the club is in the best state it has ever been in in my time but just personally feel I need a change - hopefully itll give me a kick up the bum too

I hear good things about the Kilve CC... 1s in a cracking league next year if you like playing at some of the best grounds in Somerset!!! ;-)
-
@OwzatOllie my club are looking for players and are only 15 mins south of Chelt/Glos if you are still looking
-
I'm moving clubs based on family commitments - we moved house 3 years ago (so a 20 mile ish journey to home games) and with a couple more additions to the family last summer cutting down on travel time for the games (I get my passport stamped to play) is a must. So after 14 years at the same club and hitting 40 in a couple of weeks it's the South Yorkshire league for me
-
I am either moving clubs or giving up!!! I hate cricket
So I actually took a break from league cricket this year. Played 2 sunday friendlies in May and haven't played since due a hamstring strain, and also as I'm well into my golf.
Might be back next year though I haven't missed playing.

I gave up this year and thought I would miss it but really haven’t at all

Not sure if i should move after this season so would like to hear some opinions. On the one side i absolutely love the club i play at right now for the people that are there, its a good laugh at division 5 out of 10 in a good league. It is a bit lower than i should be playing standard wise, have had a lot of clubs offer places in div 1/2 sides which is why im considering it. Currently averaging about 50 in 14 games and did the same last season too, not in the best form but not awfully out of form either, also get a bowl of 7-8 overs a game and i would definitely not bowl at other clubs, because there's pies then theres the crap i put down the other end.
My pros for staying are:
Really like the club and people.
New pavillion and nets in the next 2-3 years.
Smaller club, really like knowing almost everyone at the club and you feel valued as you're an important part.
Cons:
Standard is a bit low
They are struggling to put out a consistent 1XI team, we carry at least 4 2nd teamers each game
Nobody trains, myself a home counties lad and his brother are the only 3 that ever train and only 2 of us play for the club.
That basically results in 6-7 drop catches per game, every game. Which means we lose games we should win almost every week, incredibly de-motivating as a player.
The players that join are almost always 2XI players or sunday, there really is no new 1XI players joining, ever.
Im only 20 so i know i want to and should still improve but have no intention of playing cricket at the highest level of seriousness or talent. Its very much a hobby and I like how whilst yes it is league cricket I don't need to take it incredibly seriously.
-
It’s a difficult decision and one I am quite familiar with. Ultimately it’s all down to who you want to spend Saturday afternoon/evening with and what those people are like if you’re team loses.
I play at a lower standard now with a number of older/larger people in the team who cannot bend down, rum or throw. I accept that is the ability of these team players (I can no longer throw and struggle to run either). But I bowl each week and I’m happy to bat in the middle order to give those people who don’t bowl
A good opportunity to bat. We are currently top of the table with promotion virtually guaranteed. We don’t mind losing and never blame people for dropped catches or other poor play. We don’t train, which I do miss, but it does mean I don’t get muscle stiffness mid week.
Good luck with your decision, and it’s a shame to see smaller clubs continue to struggle but be upfront with your current team so they don’t think you’re a (No Swearing Please). Just make sure that if you leave you don’t burn any bridges.
-
Yeah if i did leave I would most likely still play mid week T20 there and Sundays if i fancied them. Its a hard decision to make really as I've been here 3 years and really enjoyed it, when i joined i had a decent technique but was pretty poor at actually scoring runs now 3 years later I'm not getting better largely due to the standard. Theres a few clubs im considering and have played some friendlies for one of them to see if id like it.
It helps that I know most of the players from the clubs i am looking at. The reason I've not fully decided to move is that Id be a fringe 1/2s player at those clubs. They have a div 1 side where I can open the batting but know full well that at full strength id be 2s and their 2s are the same division as the current side i play for even though in my opinion their 2s are a far better side than us.
-
Hi, not posted for a while but thought I would seek the opinion of the Forum. My son will be moving to Cirencester in September and is looking for a club to play for. He currently plays (batsman) for the for a club with teams in Div 1 and 3 so is looking for a club that plays a good standard of cricket where he will hopefully play for the 1st team in the summer and can train with over the winter. Any suggestions? Cheers
-
Lechlade are a pretty good side. They had a bit of an issue with the league but they are a good club and im pretty sure they have a top division side.

Lechlade are now in Glos Div 7 (10th tier) as they lost their entire 1st team at the end of 2018 season and their second team became their first team so they are really struggling, cirencester 1s play in wepl glos (3rd tier) and stroud (about 15 mins from cirencester) play in Wepl prem 2 (2nd tier) - chippenham (again 15 mins from cirencester) are quite close to you and they have just been promoted to wepl prem 1 (top tier)
i play for stroud in their lower teams, so i can pass the first team captains number onto you if you would like? pm me if you do

Damnnn didnt know it got that bad, why did they all leave?

Thanks both for your replies. Looks like Lechlade might be a non starter.
How does the Premier League work in the WEPL, where he is coming from there is one Prem (East of England) and then you have the Div 1, 2 etc; How does WEPL tier 3 say compare to Two counties Div 1 (Essex and Suffolk)?
Appreciate your help

as you mentionned the issue with the league caused it and the guys who put the money into the club also left, the first team disbanded and the club is only kept going to keep the youth players with a pathway to mens cricket (as they still have a great youth set up) - huge shame as such a lovely place to play

Tier 1 = wepl prem 1 = top div
Tier 2 = wepl prem 2 is split into 2 leagues that are equal = wepl prem 2 glos/wilts and wepl prem 2 bristol and NE Somerset (done on location to lower traveling)
Tier 3 = below these two are 4 county based wepl division that are all equal = Wepl gloucestershire - wepl wiltshire - wepl bristol - wepl NE somerset
then it goes into the county leagues under this
hope this helps a bit - the wepl wesbite is below as it might be easier for your comparison, the splits probably mean the quality starts to dilute more than the system he has with straight prem -1 -2 etc, but the distances are quiet big in the Wepl

Thanks. I suppose he will just have to visit a few clubs over the winter and see who he likes, feels welcome, fits in and is the right level. Cheers

Cheers
Swindon CC
4 teams
1s WEPL
2s-Wilts Div1, 3s-Wilts Div3, 4s-Wilts Div7
Winter training from Jan and then outdoor from April/May
-
We just had a lad join from Swindon, said the team selection across all sides isnt great. Plus its in Swindon, not the nicest place to play cricket
-
jjelricksmith I get what you saying about Swindon, its also 20 or so miles from Cirencester so I think he would prefer somewhere a bit closer if possible.
Looking at the leagues Cirencester would be closest but maybe the 1s in WEPL would be too higher standard and the 2s in Div 6 too low.
Saw another club in Div 1 (Poulton) which isn't too far - do you know anything about them?
Cheers
-
poulton is a nice club (div 1 is the league below Wepl glos that cirencester are in), but their 2nds are in div 7 - which is only 2/3 league off the bottom of the pryamid, from what you say i think cirencester might be best, ciren 1's are a decent side in tier 3 - wepl glos and there 2nds are in div 5 there is not a huge difference in quality between the weak sides in div 3 down to div 6 (as the GCB messed up the pryamid when they intergrated the 2nd/3rd/4th teams into the Glos County League
cirencester is also a nice place to play and the club is very friendly and forward moving

Hi all. Due to a variety of things happening this Summer I’ll be in London till the middle of July and was just wondering if anyone had any experience of playing for/against clubs in North West London? Potentially looking for a club with multiple teams across different levels as I’ve only ever played in one league system so I could find my standard. Cheers.

So I actually took a break from league cricket this year. Played 2 sunday friendlies in May and haven't played since due a hamstring strain, and also as I'm well into my golf.
Might be back next year though I haven't missed playing.
So I did play in 2020 in the end. We had 7 games and thought it would good fun to see my mates again. I'll play again this year but not every game as I have a golf membership now and that comes first.
-
I didn’t play last year and played 4 games in 2019 before plantar fasciitis curtailed it.
I fell like I’ve fallen out of love with the game tbh.
Any ideas on how to get it back?

Plantar fascitis is so depressing - I imagine when that is fixed, you'll feel a bit more positive too!

More social cricket if you can find it. League cricket can be a real drain on your enthusiasm if you're playing against idiots or losing every week. If the aim is to get a game in and have a beer, much easier to just enjoy it.
-
To be honest I’ve had some poor experiences with clubs, and got to the point where I think it’s me rather than the club.
Plantar fasciatis was really horrible and the guys I played with were real dicks about it, being critical in the field etc.
My last game of cricket was a crap experience- I could hardly move!

Sorry you've had bad experiences with both team "mates" and your foot.
I've got a chronic back problem that sometimes makes me very slow to react in the field but people have known for me for long enough to know it's an issue. If they are being critical of you when you're injured, that's their issue.

I proper struggled with this, a couple of seasons ago, to the point I couldn’t walk off the pitch after a game.
Adidas ortho trainers were my saviour,,I wear them all day every day, for the day job, business meetings, meals out, everything.
I’ve since recommended these to family members who suffer from this, and touch wood, it seems to work..
I’m sure you know this, but avoid Skechers like the plague
It is literally crippling to suffer through,,,,,and if you were getting grief from teammates, then they are absolute tools tbh.

Going to be signing for my 8th senior club at the age of 25!
Started at a ECB premier league team in my village, who have now gone onto becoming one of the county's best clubs churning out juniors and winning most cups!
Left at 19 to go and play in the same ECB premier league, where I ended up bouncing around club to club doing reasonably well for a teenager/early twenty year old until I was 22.
Then at 22 I met a girlfriend so didn't fancy the travelling so I was able to spend Saturday nights with her, so I moved to the highest feeder league to the ECB league. Which ironically was stronger with more current and ex-pros than the ECB league.
And then this year (2020) I split up with said girlfriend due to long distance etc irony that shes now moved to my city to finish uni!! so with no commitments and aged 25 I am moving back up to the ECB league and the club it all started at, playing in a team with a lot of similar aged players to me and a load of my friends growing up who I played junior cricket.
Ashamed to say that from the age of 19 I have been paid everywhere I have played and every move bar dropping down the league has been money motivated. This season the same I have had 3 teams ask me to sign for them but my local club offered the best deal. And also allowed me to run my local coaching business from their newly build net facility at no cost.
Hopefully Covid doesn't ruin it! Struggle with mental health a lot this year had 4/5 major losses and events this year. Cricket and prepping for cricket is keeping me positive and giving me something to look forward to and aim towards succeeding :)

Each to their own but I cant help feeling that part of what I enjoy about playing club cricket would be lost with that mercenary like club swapping.
I guess if its your income its a different story

I know this is going off topic a bit but..
Are the Adidas trainers you use the ones that describe themselves as Ortholite?
I have experienced some Plantar Fasciitis after a few months of jogging during Lockdown 1. I have managed to control the pain with some amazon insoles and can run 5k+ pain free with a bit of discomfort the day after. However I do get discomfort if I'm on my feet at work for a while so I'm willing to try any footwear that might help.
-
Yes, they are the ones
They have a lump under the middle part of your foot
Like I said, I practically live in mine,,even wear them in the house now, and I’ve no issues whatsoever with plantar now
And mine was that bad, I couldn’t walk, never mind run

I can see why people wouldn't enjoy doing what I do and respect everyone's decision, as long as they enjoy their cricket that's all that matters, whatever standard they play!
Fortunately I know a the majority of the leagues players I play in, played a lot of city, county and area rep cricket with them when I was growing up, so when I move to a club chances are I know at least 3/4 lads already there.
I suppose the money side has helped me massively, coming out of college at 18 I didn't know what I wanted to do so getting paid from cricket and a part time job allowed me to save enough money to go over to Australia that winter and play.
Coming back to the UK I went to university, the summer before going to university I didn't spend a penny of crickets money the same with the two summers in between first - second year and second - third year. This money allowed me to live comfortably during university and not have the money struggles associated with students!
I'm a good performer in league cricket without bragging I can usually receive 2/3 offers from various club chairmen before Christmas each winter. All offering similar - Match fee, Kit, Subs, Expenses, Incentives usually £1 a run, £10 a Wicket which is what I signed this year.
As a young person it allows me to save my weekly wage and just spend my cricket money on going out, holidays and non essentials :)

Sounds like it works well for you, as I said each to their own.
I left my first club after 10 years due to regularly being left out of the 1s for lesser players (time has proved this, not blowing my own trumpet) who were the captains mates. Left my second club, which was also my hometown club - I was born less than half a mile from the ground, after 5 seasons due to a disagreement about how the club was being run. Lo and behold the season after I left the 1sts and 2nds were both relegated. I was on the committee at both of these clubs until I left.
I then sporadically played some lower league cricket for a couple of seasons before signing for my current club at a decent level again. I had 4 other offers from clubs at the same time, 2 of which offered me free cricket - not in the ballpark you might earn from playing but not insignificant. Add to this the voluntary hours i do on the ground and the match day polos i sponsor and I would estimate im around 2-3k worse off per season playing for my current club than I would be if I had taken one of those offers up.
But Im so glad I made that decision. This is my 5th season now and I play for a team who play hard on the field, want to improve and socialise well off it. In 2019 we finished in the highest position in the clubs 150 year history. Plans for new nets and pavillion are in the works and ive made some great mates. The bulk of our 1sts and 2nds are from less than 3 miles away and have been there since juniors which is not the case for alot of clubs in our league. This shows when the chips are down - we've won matches we had no right to win several times. People care about the club they play for
I enjoy helping a club to grow and the team spirit and bonds you make playing consistently at a good club. I guess Im lucky that I had a pretty well paid job straight out of Uni and now run my own business so money has never been a factor. Perhaps if it was I may have taken up one of those offers but I know I wouldnt be happier.
-

This is absolutely bang on. I live about 20 minutes walk from two of the bigger clubs in my area, both with pristine grounds and huge resources. When I tried to contact them about joining, radio silence. By contrast, the parks club I play for got back to me in an hour during the work day, gave me details of training and invited me down that Saturday to meet some of the guys. I've now been on the committee for 4 of my 5 seasons at the club and it's always given a real sense of satisfaction knowing that I've been part of the club growing and improving. Don't think I'd have got that at either of the big clubs.
-

Exactly mate, no right or wrong way of doing it is there everybody have their own personal circumstances.
For me as long as you are enjoying it and want to be involved as much as you can that's all that matters, it sounds like you do an awful lot for the clubs you are and have been at.
I know 100% people like you are the lifeblood of cricket and sport up and down the country, without it there wouldn't be the clubs in place they are today. Im sure Covid has made it much harder the role you do? but i bet you felt a lot more pride when you saw the teams walk out that first weekend having made the changes needed to safely allow cricket to return, I work in sporting event management so know how its affected the sporting industry and the red tape around due to Covid.
What I do when I go into a new team is help out with things like coaching, junior teams admin and stay behind at the bar/get involved with all the social side. Think this is my saving grace when moving clubs haha
Have a great 2021 season mate! :)
-
Sounds like you are very involved from the offset when you change clubs, perhaps why it works so well for you. Its always taken me 6months to a year maybe to feel at home and get properly involved off the field - maybe thats why I couldnt imagine swapping so frequently
As for Covid - No! I reckon its every Groundsmans dream! Only having to prepare for less than half a season, less repairs, less rolling, no pre season friendlies, fewer youth games. Much easier! Obviously as a player i was gutted not to play more
But yes to those who got the games on from an Admin and Risk assessment Point of View it was great. Im sure there are plenty on this forum who tick those boxes but I am not one!
-

Yeah it’s a shame. I would dearly love to find a nice club but I think my confidence took a knock after the plantar fasciatis thing.
