Post by: Liam-SCCC on February 19, 2010, 03:56:30 PM
Post any videos of yourself batting, bowling, fielding here.

I would start you off with a video from last summer but It was my 4th rack on a hot day and I had lot concentration so Technically its bad!

Have been netting since October now, and will have my video analysis session with my academy soon and will upload the video then.

Liam,  Looks like your falling over a little.  Maybe stand straight on and avoid any trigger movements and keep your head over the ball.

Yeah game has come on quite a bit since then, hitting my first 50 and now in the academy doing one to ones, on Sunday I did 3 buckets on just leading with head and shoulder and keeping back foot planted

The problem with bowling machine, if the guy who is "trowing" isent trying to adjust the  bowling machine some times, it gets to easy to just turn your front foot and wait for the ball...

If you are trying to "groove" a shot, you dont want him playing about with the speed, you want the ball in the same place every time so you can keep practicing it until you are happy you are playing it the way you want to.

When i train my balane on the drives, I try to hold my balance, when I have made the shot, by ending up standing on only the frontfoot, try that :)

Liam, i would LOVE to bowl against you.

Do you normally stand that far towards leg ? or is it deliberate to get you on the drive ?

Reason i ask is, if i bowled my rip leg spin about half a yard infront of your front foot. its either going to force an upwards drive, or bowl you ?

Just my thoughts :)
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: procricket on March 21, 2010, 09:06:18 PM
short stuff you tend not to get in line the open get squared up no back foot movement but when it is wide of you lovely looking shots.

get the back foot moving across to off stump and look to clip the ball of your hips
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: tommy2tink on March 21, 2010, 09:07:11 PM
It looks good. One thing I noticed that'll be more important when the balls swinging around outside (not to mention the possibility of variable bounce) is when you're playing off the back foot, you're right (back) foot doesn't move (across) at all irrespective of where the ball is. So, sometimes it's in the right spot but sometimes it's a bit off.

He's playing pace in the videos, he might change it if he were faces "rip[ping] leg spin", Pinch-Hitter.

Sorry just realised that I've essentially repeated what procricket said.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Liam-SCCC on March 21, 2010, 09:13:13 PM
I tend to stand on middle and leg, with a slightly open stance. You can't mark a guard on the mat so I can wander abit from 2 legs
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: procricket on March 21, 2010, 09:17:52 PM
not wanting to sound patronising you look a more than capable batsman but what i would do is ask for throw down where the ball pitches around middle, middle and leg and just stand in a position with your back foot on off stump-middle and off and just play off your hip mate.

if it was in a league game i would ask my quick to play the 3 card trick 2 short ones into the body then a off stump yorker .

your looking fine though as said elswere you should be able to score some runs and your looking good

I love fast short bowling, and I am very good off my legs. Not really shown in the vid. You would be better getting the dibbly dobbly bowlers on against me!
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Watsontotty on March 21, 2010, 09:28:04 PM
Need a bit of work on your balance as on nearly every shot your back foot is aside your front foot and you very open chested due to you not having any balance. You need to work more on your feet not allowing your back foot to move so much and staying square when playing drives etc. Your head position didn't look that bad so i would suggest standing a bit taller at the crease not tapping the bat so much and only one movement into the shot holding the position right through the shot.

Play down in Dorset, Have a lad at our club, been clocked at 82mph, I love facing him, hooking pulling and cutting. Do get to odd nick off. Couple of drives but he rarely pitches it up in nets

Ahh right, not too sure who that would be, my age though. Left hand bat?

I just love that pull/hook, last shot in the back foot video. Would have cleared in field and shot of deep fielders

I would love to see you try and hook a 82 mph bouncer, not calling you a liar i just reckon the ball would win!

What evryone else has said is right, close off your stance or just get in line with a trigger, keep the hips in line aswell.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Liam-SCCC on March 21, 2010, 10:07:36 PM
No word of a lie, towards the end of the net on wednesday, he bowled me a bouncer and I nailed a hook shot. Not saying he bowls at 82 consistently but that is what he was clocked at. He generally gets it around waist high as his stock ball.

BTW, he is Nicholls7 on here
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....

got to agree with raymond anybody with any pace would hit you like i said the 3 card trick would surfice.

with your set up mate anybody with any gas would rip your ribs up.

not having a go just a point on the evidence you shown us

Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Liam-SCCC on March 21, 2010, 10:19:51 PM
Yeah, alright. I am more comfortable with pace though. That was around 60/65mph. This was 2 weeks ago and have netted since, working on getting that back leg across. I netted today at the academy with a Dorset and Dorset Premier League bowler and was getting right in behind the short stuff. Loved facing him, but struggled against my coach who was bowling medium in swingers.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: roco on March 21, 2010, 10:23:24 PM
we all have flaws that can be worked out by a decent bowler i tend to go across too much but rarely get out lbw if ever easy to spot a flaw much harder to exploit it
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: procricket on March 21, 2010, 10:25:53 PM
not if you have bowler who can bowl 80-85 mph consistently in your side roco as you should know
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: dan_griffin11 on March 21, 2010, 10:27:42 PM
its one of the better flaws to have tho, no major threat to your wicket
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: roco on March 21, 2010, 10:30:32 PM
true but not that many with that pace and acurate below minor/county standard when i bowled that pace was not as acurate as i would have liked say 4/6 where i wanted them but yeah decent off legs due to hockey really annoys bolwers when work balls onto leg from outside off but start with all three stumps showing due to big trigger being 6ft 4
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: procricket on March 21, 2010, 10:34:28 PM
i will not lie when i get in i take a off stump guard.

i picked it up form wanye madsen a saffer pro i start on middle but once settled i move to off stump.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: roco on March 21, 2010, 10:38:11 PM
Well works great for me as bowlers see all three stumps so think easy wicket just bowl straight then my trigger comes in and get a few easy boundries before they figure it out to bowl a little wider hey dave you must get a few funny looks when you ask for off as that is pretty rare or is so in my circles
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Colesy on March 21, 2010, 10:49:49 PM
I take a guard of leg and I play predominantly on the offside but will put anything on my legs away. my trigger takes me onto middle so a massive LBW candid :L
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: procricket on March 21, 2010, 10:57:58 PM
roco the thing is i ask for 3 guards when i take wicket i think as wayne told me if you ask for off stump only then your on a hiding to nothing but if there is no movement either in the air or off the pictchand your set you should not miss a straight one.

i have always believed that a good player takes balls that are straight and either whips it through mid wicket or drives down the ground of course not from ball one but if there is no movement around and your set.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: roco on March 21, 2010, 11:06:33 PM
True anything straight I tend to deal with just learning to keep it on ground as major flaw was head coming up when playing ball so body followed causing aerial shots but sorted now I think but coach in side keeps saying to me don't walk across your covering your stumps but I always tell him I've been out 3 times lbw out of last 60 and one of those was dodgy left arm over swinging ball away from me a right hander hit me in front of middle with a stride and umpire gave it was on 76 at time so was not a happy bunny
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: procricket on March 21, 2010, 11:09:11 PM
as a keeper as well if i see not much movement in the first innings i tend to try to flick through mid wicket early in the air off a good length even if it outside off league stuff anyway to try and play a few mind tricks.

in some of the other games i play if i tried this i would be nailed

Also, some of the nets people are playing in look terrible and small!! lol

And anyone ever face swing on the bowling machine? It's pretty good, was facing ball just slightly fuller then a good length and swing away one day at like 71, tough stuff!

i know but if i stand more upright feels way unatural and tend to lean back on shots as on heels plus i feel i pick up length easier that way but your not the first to tell me that we have a level 3 coach who keeps telling me off he gets very frustrated with me >:( but hey always looking to improve and am more upright than i used to be if you can believe it   :-[

Carberry and Adams used to open the batting with me coming in at 3.

That's Hampshire County Council 3rds! And Alfred Carberry and Freddie Adams opening!  ;)

Liam, who is the so called Dorset and Dorset premier league quick your going on about? And also your awful off your legs, you get bowled trying to moose it with your bottom hand all the time. Remember when you got bowled by a ten year old at redlands indoor?
PS Ash has never been clocked 82mph otherwise he would play a decent standard and not in Dorset Division 3! Like Stuey Fry who plays for Gloucestershire Academy!

Nick, I can't remember who it was. And Ash has been clocked at 82. And you have also been knocked over by 10 year olds and you play county!

I had no trouble facing stu fry earlier this year, got him at army camp this sunday and home next saturday.

And I have changed my game, I don't try to whip it off my legs unless it is on leg. not off middle anymore. And me bottom handed!? No

I love how most people (myself included) just keep it around 70-75mph and just feed the half volleys all day long :D
Also like it when Simmy gets a pearler and the bloke feeding says "my bad" - whats that about, thats what he should be feeding you all day long!!!
I noticed with Prowannabee that you have a inside out arc when you come down on the ball - i do this and it's one of the hardest habits to get out of.

Nice bit of batting though - decent facilities by the looks of it.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: ProWannabe88 on August 17, 2010, 08:20:28 AM
the machine sometimes sticks so the ball doesnt come out immediately when fed thats why i said my bad  :D

70mph in swing is nice and comfortable on a length. our astro is poor and anything other than a full length will either scuttle through by your shins or nip up and smack you in the teeth haha. the facilities are ok mate, not the best but they'll do for us, we never complain. Just a shame we didnt have a better camera. could have got some good footgae of simmys solitaire and my new ayrtek in action
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....

Setting the bowling machine on 60mph leg spin is much more fun - the balls drift, pitch and rear past your nose over your shoulder!! :o

If you are going to do that - try using a middling bat and taking on the hook... that sorts the men from the boys!! ;)
Actually on second thoughts, you might want to give it a miss. However being, serious, if you are using a bowling machine regularly, using a middling bat, like this http://www.sportdiscount.com/product/6731/PS_MIDDLING_BAT - will really help you learn to watch the ball right onto the bat.
Most people when using a bowling machine just get used to where the ball is going to pitch and after about 3 balls start playing the shot before the ball is bowled, which ceases to be any sort of decent practice... it becomes like using a driver on the range you end up seeing how hard to can hit the ball at the expence of any kind of technique...

When you do start connecting with the hook with a middling bat at 75+mph you really are watching the ball.

looking good boys! been trying to get a bowling machine at our club signed off since the start of the season with no luck as yet! Good fun to face though but dont usually crank them up too high when facing one as dont think we would face anything over 75mph in our league!
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Simmy on August 17, 2010, 09:04:10 AM
same as us tom.. id say i dont think we face anything above 75mph ... not anymore anyway

alot of the fast bowlers in are league are getting old now so dropping there pace.,..

also depends what tracks like at a time.. i wonder if we could get hold of a speed gun as we have one bowler who is pretty quick on a hard track so would be intresting to see what sort of speed it is compared with the bowling machine
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on August 17, 2010, 09:06:53 AM
Yeah makes you wonder just how slow the stuff we face is in comparism to the county/international arena....when your opener is steaming in and hitting 65mph and you see Yardy chucking in his flipper at the same speed it becomes amusing!
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....

was having this conversasion other day at cricket.... when pro's are picking bouncers up at 90mph and smashing them into the stand.. i find it amazing!

but at end of the day if you practiced it everyday with bowling at 80mph + am sure we would be able to pick it up once we are used to the speed.

i think me and liam will just try 80mph out side offstump and see how we can cope lol

Heres a game from last year, one of our teams friends does it as a joke. This was a bad day for us, not our best performance. For any of you that have played at Blandford army camp, if the batsmen get on top, you will suffer.

Footage of me starts at 5 minutes 11 ish with the change of bowling. I came back on to bowl the last over after every was getting bitch slapped around. The guy was on 91 and i bowled him first ball of the over. I then bowl 1 more ball and thats it!

Not directed at anyone in particular this, but why is it when people use bowling machines they feed each other friendly half vollies on off stump? I think that is a complete waste of time.  When I do bowling machine sessions I work on short bowling, spin technique, back foot drives - shots that I have to use in a game where I am weaker.

The point of a bowling machine session is to work on weaknesses not pat back gentle friendly stuff.

I agree with your general point, though it can also be usefull as a confidence booster if your feeling out of form or just haven't had a hit in a while.

I may be off ther mark but people are also more likely to post videos of themselves where they look good.

Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Buzz on November 30, 2010, 08:31:43 PM
Roco- that also defeats the object!! the idea is to face maybe ten balls for each shot you are trying to work on and do that over two or three bowling machine sessions so you are grooved and ready to go.

Facing 80mph lifting snorters isn't great practice too!!
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: roco on November 30, 2010, 08:35:44 PM
That's not for me I prefer to be kept on my toes as if I know what ball is coming I set myself for it as you rarely get two balls in the same place in a row so helps me with slot selection although my mate does go over board at times with balls Anderson would be proud of on an over cast day

shot grooving around 60mph

shot selection around 60-70mph

and general net specific shots 75mph...

70 plus off 18 yards for most things and 75+ for the short stuff, otherwise the ball tennis balls too much

I use 75 mostly but 80 to push it but not very often but rarely use it as prefer the sidearm I find it more realistic and better practice just never been a huge fan of bowling machines But that's just me

Those were at 75-78mph with various degrees of swing. I do have my video of the back foot drives I was practising but for some reason photo bucket will not let me upload that video, the same goes for the 2 spin nets I had at the end. I've played with some very good players over the last few years and the common theme with them is to groove 2 or 3 of your best shots and use them primarily, the other shots will follow when your in. I like the cover drive so I practise it a lot, the same with the flick through mid-wicket and the pull.

Can't agree more, I hate it because you're playing the same shot/s over and over again when I need to work on the shots I'm not good at.

Yeah that's right. He didn't net with us because he was living in London. Had some throw downs with him before games- he was always practising his forward defence! He said all his game was based around it, batted with him a few times and put a couple of partnerships on with him. Don't think in his 8 games he played 1 cover drive though- all cuts and flicks.Great lad, top professional and passionate about all aspects of the game- with the crap surrounding Pakistan this summer, he was a credit to his country.

First one is bowling, second is batting. I dont think any balls have been edited out as i get creamed/out a couple of times, not sure though.
Grateful for any feedback and opinions, positive or negative dont hold back lol. Buzz please don't have a heart attack over my trigger movement :D
If it makes any difference im a top/sometimes middle order batsmen who bowls.
Cheers in advance.

forget the trigger mate you stay leg sided even with the movement if this is in your game fair play if not you need to work on moving that front foot

are you a little nervous of the ball.

No real foot movement

seem to have a good eye

what level do you play

A trigger is meant to get you in a position to play a shot not the end of the movement

sorry you said you wanted feedback

The trigger is something i started last season, id seen others doing one back and across and just thought it seemed more natural to move towards the ball tbh
are you a little nervous of the ball.
nope, i hadnt realised how much i was moving to leg rather than just playing the ball to leg

No real foot movement
agreed, thats something i really need to focus on
seem to have a good eye
thanks
what level do you play
Saracens West Herts League, Was in the 2's last year in Division 10 i think, should be in 1's to start with this season anyway ij Division 7.
A trigger is meant to get you in a position to play a shot not the end of the movement

sorry you said you wanted feedback
I apreciate your honesty mate, not going to improve if im only told good things am i :)

watch Trott and his trigger it is there to help him get into a position to play the shot

I have one thing to recommend mate

Use a full net without the trigger bat on off stump and see how you get on.

just try it

Ive just come back from nets, does anyone else find it so much easier to time the bsll in the nets, im guessing its just the ball coming onto the bat harder indoors... no wonder all these pro's bats seem so good, the wickets they bat on must be similar to indoor tracks (pacewise)?

wait till u see latest one when nick has sorted it out.

im concentrating on not moving my back foot so much i play the shot and the balls allready gone through haha

im the opersite i strugle in the nets as the bounce is crazy and it just zips of the surface to much

watched you look good mate

4 observations

Good hand eye

slight hockey hand i call it on leg stump more bottom hand coming into it.

Weight transfers not always there sometime driving sat on the back leg

Some bloody nice drives there lets see some more varied length

Bowling machines are groove machines they can cause you to plant i notice when he changes the line a touch you still play down the last balls line i call it bowling machine tardiness.

Overall mate very good indeed
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: roco on March 23, 2011, 11:33:25 PM
The bowling machine length was varied just it's slow low pitch so mostly front foot

I play hockey so that does come in sometimes

Rarely go on the bowling machine so not used to it but can see what you mean with following the line

Yes that was my redback that my friend brought/stole off me

With me it's a necessity as I have big foot movements so any closer to leg and I end up outside off plus I have tried no trigger or a smaller one but does not feel natural at all

Title: Re: Videos of you playing....

All coaches have told me to use a trigger. It helps me get my head in line with the ball and keeps my head still making my balance better.

And got a net this saturday so will do!

All coaches have told me to use a trigger. It helps me get my head in line with the ball and keeps my head still making my balance better.

First of all, you're hitting those drives nicely

I would think that your current trigger is making your balance worse and your head less still.  You're still moving when the ball is being released, this will make it much harder for you to pick up the line and length of the ball.  You get away with it on this video with that full length.

You could just be struggling to time your trigger due to the feeding of the bowling machine, but if it's a regular thing you need to think of triggering earlier so you're still at the point of release.

Still, some really good shots there.

Ditto to the above - I would also say you will really struggle to play a drive to a wider offside ball.
nice shots though, espcially the on drive.

On the "coaches have said I should" comment. Coaches are frequently not right - I have tried a few suggestions with people in the nets that have been a disaster!!
I really don't think you need a trigger at all - being stiller at the crease will really help you. Just my view.
If you don't trigger make sure you are lined up right at the start with your outside eye over leg stump. One thing i would say about your trigger is that it does take you into the right position, rather than away from the right position. Anyway, the important thing is you do what works for you.

Alex RP I will pm you shortly...

Thank god you can't see my new technique buzz it's trigger happy ;)
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: Buzz on March 24, 2011, 04:21:59 PM
the thing is - I don't have a problem with a trigger if it is done properly and adds something specific to your game. There are benefits to having one in some cases.

I just think that in most cases a trigger is introduced for the wrong reasons and that it is largely a modern fad in club cricketers and also the trigger is done incorrectly - perhaps taking you away from the correct position, done way to late (they should be done before the bowler enters his delivery stride, not during) and not allowing the batsman to keep their head still and eyes level.
People see loads of pro's with triggers and think that is what they should do. Against an 80mph bowler there is an argument to say a trigger could be helpful to get your feet moving and to get you on the balls of your feet and against a spinner a forward press is also a method that can work.

But almost all club cricketers face medium pace bowlers where 75mph is fast and 65 is normal. Against this type of bowling standing still and keeping your eyes still makes batting so much simpler and easier. Plus it allows your technique to be less complicated, so less can go wrong, you are starting in the correct position, so you know where your stumps are... I could rattle on for some time about the massive advantages of being side on, still and on the balls of your feet, but I think you get the message.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: roco on March 24, 2011, 04:27:11 PM
I agree people watch what works for the pro's not themselves for me my trigger gets my feet moving as other wise I am like cement as I have tried no trigger so would be fun to hear what you thought of my batting as I have not been buzzed yet although I have changed it slightly now

just a couple of comments.

1. he doesnt seem to start with the same stance, it seems to change every ball.
2. seems to have a trigger movement but doesnt do it everyball due to having a different set each time
3. doesnt really lead with his head and foot movement is minimal

id say he needs to concentrate firstly on choosing a guard and sticking to it, then start to work on leading with the head and his feet should follow.

Agree with leo, think he also needs to control that back swing/pickup. Its all over the place. Comes in a big arc from gully area on some shots. Better control would help his eyes stay level and still.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....

first few things that strike me are that his knees don't really bend in his stance, his back does so his head is moving about a lot, eyes don't really seem level, and he has about as much foot movement as me ;)

I've always felt he tended to "prop" forward early doors and push his hands at the ball. As Fros gets into his innings, his feet start moving and it becomes a different game. Trigger movement is a bit bigger than I remember and no doubt caused by the bouncer warfare that sometimes exists at our net sessions. I think alot of us go back and across to get inside the short stuff some of our lads fire down.

Ricky - A tennis ball could skirm through the grill or even bounce and hit him in the jaw - causing injury. Would you want your professional at your club doing this before the start of the season? Not sensible if you have to line up a sub-pro week in week out that you can ill afford until he recovers...

Skiing is fun - but footballers aren't allowed to ski because it's deemed a risk. IMO this is just as bad.

Hardly unlikely a tennis ball will cause a serious injury and in my opinion more of a risk for the pro rather than the club if he doesnt play he won't get paid simple. Better stop our pro from using the internet typing too hard could damage his fingers and risk him missing the start of the season.

are you for real? a tennis ball might give him a bruise, not much more
and yes, i have been hit by a tennis ball, a full-blooded serve into my cheek, it stung like (No Swearing Please) and i had a massive red mark, that was all
and i think a club can cope without a pro for a few weeks

i stand corrected ricky. i didn't realise you played tennis with professionals serving at 100 mph. in that case tbarnfield maybe get him to do it without a helmet then if he'll only get a massive red mark?

cope without a professional? not if it's mandatory to have a professional.

Outlaw I was talking about the club and the professional as one - not sensible on either parties. The club loses it's pro who they have to replace (may cost more for a sub pro), disrupts the balance of the side, no coach for seniors or juniors for a period of time and of course for the pro who will be out of pocket.

so a tennis ball at 100 mph wouldn't rupture an eye socket or break a glass jaw?

cope without a professional? not if it's mandatory to have a professional.
I don't play with pros, far from it, professionals serve a fair bit over 100mph, 120mph is about average.
He could do it without a helmet if he wanted, but if he can wear a helmet that will stop 99.999% of tennis balls that hit it without pain then why should he not wear it?

If its mandatory to have a professional then some people take cricket far too seriously.

Looks like he enjoyed it. I hate indoor netting with roll out mats witha passion, end up playing early on shots in the 1st few matches.
I'm going to video a of myself and a few of our lads netting next saturday. We have been lucky enough to have the last 3 saturdays netting outside. Shame we have to do an hour of cardio before netting!

Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: procricket on April 02, 2011, 09:26:11 PM
A trigger is a movement designed to get you in a position to play the ball all round the wicket.

I keep seeing triggers used as a final movement and people trigger then play from there away and round there body thrus losing balance and weight distribution.

Triggers are not designed to be the finished movement

I'm sure all the forumites have had a good old chuckle in front of their computer screens over the club pro facing 100mph bumpers a 3rd teamer backing away from pacey bowling in a dimly lit sports hall. However purists will ask just what is the purpose of these practices? To reproduce an amateur movie clip resembling American Pie or to tune one's reflexes and oil batsman's techniques ready for the cricket season?

I think CCC's former Pakistan test star would have had little difficulty in dispaching these throat balls off the Bola with, but I'm sure he would have made practices more professional. After all what are we going to be facing in April? Not Brett Lee bowling on the WACA.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: LewisA on April 05, 2011, 12:43:44 PM
I don't think that all practice needs to be precisely situation specific. Exposing a 3rd teamer to some pacey bowling in a dimly lit hall may not realistically represent what he can expect to face come the first round of matches, however it can serve other purposes. Although the bowling did not appear to be played with much confidence, such a session can boost the confidence of a player when he returns to facing bowling of a lesser pace. Also just how easy is it to recreate English conditions in April whilst indoors?

A good point made! I think BJH & RDF should perhaps train together. I can imagine regimental and over analysed cricket practice could be great fun  ;)

I have a similar problem, I've been told to rest a bit more on the back foot before playing a shot so that you have more balance when playing a shot.

no it is bacause of you back foot - which is also the reason why you are falling over after every shot.

As the ball is bowled your back foot slides backwards which takes you out of position, knocks you off balance and turns you "around". I bet you are a bit of an LBW candidate too...

In simple terms you need to work on keeping your back foot still and batting (especially playing the short ball) will be much easier for you.

Nope blatant cheating as we were winning chasing down 230 we were 170-2 when I was triggered for 87 then a few others there are a couple of umps that can be relied on to do it as teams provide there own qualified umpires

I don't really coach youngsters - but I wouldn't use a ball for that - I might tape the foot to the floor and underarm some tennis balls first to a kid doing that - an adult I would expect to have the mental control to not move his foot.

fair enough.
If I was bowling at you i'd be bowling full and at your middle and leg stump - but if you have changed it a bit fair enough. If I had a quick bowler i'd be getting them to bounce you out!!
If I was coaching you I would work really hard to lose that back foot movement as by getting rid of it you will massively increase your legside scoring options as well as improving your balance.

Being a lefty id say my strong point was scoring leg side ,the back foot moving leg side is very little now , i but even on that video the two/ threes i play leg side , they are properly my better shots in the video. But i can see what you mean ,Noone rapid in my league got kyle hogg of lancs and tino best is in it this year hes gunna have me in bits.

I've wondered about it as my eyesite problems make batting tricky. True I can bat fine without glasses but I am short sighted and when I wear specs it does help ie. picking up the length quicker and seam position on the ball. However, I also have one eye that scans left/right and another that scans up/down - this causes me real problems picking up flighted deliveries and one eye is more "oval" than the other, that's a problem apparently.

I have to wear glasses for distance stuff so I asked about it last year. I was told that because my prescription isn't that strong it would work but that it would most likely leave me needing to wear glasses later in life for reading.

I just ended up getting daily disposable contacts to wear when I play. Didn't think I'd like contacts but they're fine and I can now read the scoreboard which is handy. Don't think they made much difference to my batting though as I scored more runs in 2010 without them - but then again wild cross line swings with my eyes closed probably doesn't help.

First real hit of the season at Lords, after this first round of balls they told me i should just follow through and drive that sort of ball, very hard to get used to having grown up in Scotland where driving on the up is pretty much a no no.

Thanks

I can't (or couldn't) bat for (No Swearing Please). Too many years of playing on low slow wet wickets means I plant my front foot a lot, and really struggle when the ball is short. Also my bowling carried me to a level way above my batting so for years I never batted much and didn't have any real incentive to improve. Now I play on Astro's with tiny boundries, so since it's a batsmans game I fugured I may aswell try and become one.

P.S, feel free to have a swatch of the other guys videos, and have a guess which one captains Norway!

P.P.S or to give me any pointers (though I appreciate that's hard for such a short clip), I will stick up osome from nets in the future as they lack of any qualified coaches over here is probably holding me back a little from joining Fattus and becoming a real batsman!

Fairly defensive video below taken around Xmas 2011 over on my stint in Oz. Like I said nothing expansive in there, just working on balance and picking the right ball to hit.

I've been through it before a million times and I pick out a few key points which I've sorted by now. Namely getting squared up on a straighter length ball/tucking them into midwicket when they should probably go straight. And playing a bit inside out through Cover/Point.

Any comments/views/tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated! And before anyone asks, I don't know or care in the slightest what speed it was at, I just like to bat!

I've always done it, I think it's because I always used to have pads that were to big for me, and that was a way of compensating. But now I do it out of habit, I have the bottom strap fairly loose

I do cop a lot of stick for them, teams climb straight into that early on! But Thats where I find most comfortable, and I do have pretty skinny legs so I force them down as much as possible as they are small mens I struggle to get pads to fit!

White stump was there from a previous drill, but it's always a good guide of you knowing what you can leave. Cheers for the comments so far, even though most of them are along the lines of "Poser" so far! ha

hey everyone, not been on here on a long long time. anyways first net of the season, thought id share with everyone how it went! Sorry about the very very bad video quality, was done on a phone camera, and sorry about chirping in a dif language (i'm sri lankan). starts around at 65mph- and gradually to 71mph. with around 2 clicks of outswing. I was really struggling with the ball moving away last year so I was trying to replicate that! at the start of the net I was batting without a trigger, added a bit of a forward push towards to end to make sure I get behind the line of the ball abit easier! :) tell me what you think!

For Mr Saunders,
I'm no expert but sometimes your front foot press means you are playing around your pad if the ball is pitched up and straight.

totally agreed and it's something I'm trying to remove. Don't mind pressing but the foot goes ever so slightly across and that's not the idea.

not in the context of the other bowlers lol. Though I think you'll do a job as a backup seamer in the right conditions  ;) . Dunc did bowl me a good one. I slow mo'd it and I played down the right line, it just left me late. St Chads is a postage stamp mate. The wicket was on one side of the square it was 30 yards max one side and only 50 yards on the long side. Wicket was wet and no site screens, amazing they are allowed to play a good level (Wetherby Div 1). Really too small for proper cricket.

if that was too me ? yeh it was tough today as they had laid down a load of them black balls for the 3g and it wasnt very stable under footing .. he was actually bowling a pretty good length for a proper pitch .. but as the astro isnt great some are easy to play.. once he found the spot near the end it does a bit !

Unless he is sharp normally, the length should always be making you come forward early season. Too many cuts and pulls when he should be making you drive 90% of the time.

Our midweek league has a tv channel. That was lost when play cricket decided to ruin there site,

I have just managed to convince the committee to use YouTube instead.

And here is one of our games.

That is the midweek premier, and due to the fact the editor seems only interested in wickets and not much also. Makes it look very amatuer.

Started up autumn/winter nets a couple of week ago.

Decided to film a session and I haven't edited anything out other than when I pick up the balls etc, so this is an honest account of an average session that I do (less the last bucket which I had to leave out because it would not let me load a clip longer than 15 mins for some reason).

It is two buckets of driving, two of cutting and one of sweeping.

Nothing extravagant because I practice trying to hone my technique, not T20 styled manufacturing of shots. Having said that, I play some upper cuts in the cutting buckets.

Feel free to critique, and/or comment on "style like" etc. Thanks in advance.

That trigger movement is courtesy of my coach who has reshaped my technique over the last 4 years. Before that, I had modelled my game on Graham Gooch's set up since I was 12.

The trigger movement across my stumps works for me.

Not a bad trigger movement, although it does get you in trouble when playing the cut shot. You're almost shaping up for that every ball, and you're trying to cut balls that are too close to you which you should be driving off the back foot. Just my opinion!

I end up doing something similar when facing a bowling machine, it's just the missing all the visual cues and the need to get set a bit quicker.

I find that against the machine, the trigger movement is far more exaggerated as it not triggered by the bowler's delivery.  I hate the machine for this reason!

Ive tried to lose the trigger Ive used all my life because I was a walking LBW candidate last year.  Found I was getting across all three and then not moving my feet again!

Resurrecting an old thread as there didn't seem to be any point in creating another. An edit of my first hit in a number of weeks with my coach yesterday, a bit rusty and a few things to work on. My first video on here - Please feel free to comment/give feedback/advice  :)

Apologies for the quality, my GoPro doesn't seem to like the indoor lighting

Yeah, it is and he knows his stuff. I've been using him since May last year and in my first session he had me sussed after 5 mins and made immediate changes to my technique. I feel a much better player as a result of his coaching and it helps me that he's quite strict in terms of what he wants from me when working on a particular aspect. I've gone from not being confident against the bowling machine at 55+ to quite happy at 65.

Here's one from me, helmet cam footage so not that interesting but first net I've had since I got the camera on black friday and thought I'd give it a whirl, few of us from my club had a post-christmas hit about yesterday.
Criticism of course welcome if you can come up with any based on a hemet cam video!

That video was on my fb page earlier! Jason is a good coach, strongly recommend mate. I used to go to see him regularly, though I'll hopefully steal a few minutes of my brother's session on Sunday.

Nice guy, really helped my legspin, but my batting transformed under him.
He might have even though highly of me, sadly only as a net player :(.

Need the mental side to come good this year .

^ too much movement with the helmet mounted camera. If you're looking to assess your technique, you're better off with a stationary camera set near the opposite stumps.

Ha yeah of course, I just wanted to try this out in nets as I'd modded an old lid with a tripod mount for it, will be fun to use in midweek friendlies during the season I reckon.

Yes, i agree. all bowlers were from lower division. I will try posting another video if possible with better bowling. It's just the second indoor practise and during Sep to Dec there is practically no cricket because I am here in Canada and don't have the facilities/demand etc. etc.

Noticeable moments:

2:02 - getting cleaned up by a Yorker

And the 3 times I actually middled the ball:

5:11 and the last 2 shots from 8:35 onwards.

Also people my notice a new slim line @uknsaunders in the video. He's been working hard on his fitness and the rewards are showing!

I at least had a decent excuse of bowling left arm around a tripod and pretty much ending up in the side netting every ball. The left armers overs have no excuse.

This is the follow up to my video last week.

In the last video I was shocked to see how big my natural trigger was so the goal this week was to keep the back leg as still as possible. I'm aware my front foot movement is still rather extravagant but I'm hopeful over the next few weeks of netting I can get this out of my game.

Got 3 videos and would love some feedback. They are on Google drive, but these links should allow you to view them without joining etc, the videos were gunna take too long for Youtube!

Couple of points..

1. Yep, there are some pretty horrible shots in there, don't bother telling me about them haha.
2. The music in the background isn't mine....
3. Speed is around the 65 ish mark, not really interested. Bar one at 50 just concentrating on bringing the bat down straight.
4. Yes I always wear my pads that low...

pads look bonkers!!

you look pretty solid in my view - the only issue I see it your tendency to walk through some of your shots - especially your leg side ones. You might want your bowling machine feeder to tweak the line of his bowling a little more too so you don't get into the habit of planting your front foot. (not saying you do - just saying it happens when people spend a lit of time on the front foot facing a bowling machine)

Looks like you had  a load of fun with that session!

Thanks Buzz,

I generally score 75% of my runs square of the wicket, driving straight and through mid on is something I've never been too great at, I'll concentrate on getting a base going through the legside. Previously I just whipped everything to midwicket ish. But it's something I'm working on.

I had an issue last year with the bat coming down wider than my body, but it looks as if for the moment thats settled down without too much issue.

What net set up does your team run cam??

Seems to be youthful bowlers across all nets. Yet the batsmen all look senior?

Some striking there,  the bounce seems unrealistic for spin mind, well is to our sat pitches.

This is a pay £5 and get a bat and bowl session. There is a coach operating a bowling machine in one of the end nets who will do one to ones with 4 players a week (done so everyone will get one session with him before people start going back for another go on the machine).

The colts/Academy players train for an hour before this session where the youngsters all get a bat. They paid £60 for 12 weeks in advance but can stay for the 2nd hour free of charge (a blessing or we'd have 5 nets booked out and not enough people to fill them!) in the net I was in there were 4 "senior" players, including myself and 3 Academy players who wanted to stay on and bowl.

As for the bounce the mat was down to try and make it turn more (which it does) but it does seem a bit too springy when the ball pitches, can't say I've ever played on a deck like that! Was nice to have a hit though so I can't moan.

Thats why I don't bother with batting in nets. I wait till its dry and then spend hours in the out door with a couple of mates and the sidearm.

I used to have my bat exactly where you have it (facing fine leg). what i found is that i struggled with a lot of leg side shots because i had to bring my bat around my pads. With some coaching I have changed this and can now play the ball on the leg side with a lot more balance.

Gave my Red Ink a very overdue first outing yesterday against the bola, so here's a video of its' first go against some pretty gentle ones, taking it easy to see how ready the bat is and also practicing off side driving a little (not a strong shot of mine but one I want to improve as I've moved to a club with a very low bouncing deck).
http://youtu.be/bIvKNPoWKRI (http://youtu.be/bIvKNPoWKRI)
Bat was excellent! Unfortunately after one bag of balls my camera went on strike so didn't get any more useful footage on better speeds etc, but any tips on improving my drives/front foot play would be good, struggled last season trying to play my usual back foot game on slow low tracks.

Practice working on a forward trigger which will bring you to your front foot faster. I play on backfoot and this technique (discovered during a match) paid-off well.

For me your left shoulder goes to leg so you are always opening up and coming through with your right shoulder. Set 3 stationary balls on the floor for a cover drive, extra cover drive and off drive and practice hitting them with your head and front shoulder (left) going at the ball. You can do this simple exercise at home,  before a match and training to make sure you are getting in the right position, greasing the grove.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: WalkingWicket37 on February 18, 2015, 08:44:16 AM
Might be the camera angle, but your stance looks quite open and your bat is coming down quite wide (from the sort of gully region).
You might find playing on the off side easier if you close your stance and get your bat coming down straighter.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: edge on February 18, 2015, 10:46:49 AM
Thanks chaps. I think the camera angle does exaggerate it, but agreed I am quite open. Been working on picking the bat up straighter after falling into bad habits, might try going a little further with it. Point about the shoulders is a good one, will work on it next time. Hoping I can add a bit to my game on the off side without spoiling my strong leg side shots, after to moving to Bristol's low slow puddings last season Sunday away games with bounce you could trust were a blessed relief!

Your stance and pick up looks fine, the bat is discing into out because you right shoulder is coming through, correct this first don't try to change to many things.

Net session vs seamers from 27.02.2015

As with last week I have edited out the wides and ended up with not a lot of footage.
In this video I don't really get my timing going and get pinned near the start which lead to a fair bit of short bowling!  :(

I also notice as soon as I watched it back my bat is coming down too wide again, old habits die hard I guess  >:(

Full whites at nets looks village.
Where's the Nike bat from?
And is your trigger movement natural or forced? As seems different all the time. And occasionally a big lbw candidate.

Full whites at nets looks village. Agreed! That's why I'm not wearing them  ;)
Where's the Nike bat from? I'm not allowed to tell you as the use of fake stickers is not encouraged on this forum lol (it's an MSR with eBay stickers!
And is your trigger movement natural or forced? As seems different all the time. And occasionally a big lbw candidate. The one where I just go accross is sort of natural/was coached into me from a young age. When I'm going back and accross it was deliberate as they were quicker bowlers, but watching it back I'm going a long way accross.

Thanks for the feedback mate. I noticed straight away my bat is coming down straighter this week, and in turn less is going to the leg side.
As for triggers I'll speak to a coach next week and see what they think, cheers for pointing it out though, I had no idea I was stepping in front of all 3 stumps to play some shots!

Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: smilley792 on March 07, 2015, 05:59:32 PM
It says so in the "bible o village"

In amateur cricket there are 3 types of people.

White haters- there the ones that white up 2 mins before fielding. Change for tea and as soon as there batting is done.

Normal people- they white up with 30 to 20 mins of play started. And stay in whites until the equipment is away. They may even have a pint in whites.

The whiteout brigade. These are the ones that take the brunt of the banter. They arrive 2hrs before start already in whites. They stay for drinks, in this and drive home in them.
Hell there even seen in meet up car parks for away games sat on the car bonnet in whites!

And even the later don't train in whites! As its just village.

All jokes aside, I think it's the "all the gear no idea" view. The guy that tends to turn up in all whites at winter nets is the one that has alot of heart, but very little talent.

But there's always exceptions, not that any off the pros practice in whites. Special training gear. Shorts, thigh and chest guard outside there shirts etc.
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....

Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: ProCricketer1982 on March 07, 2015, 07:32:16 PM
not sure I take what the pro's wear as an indication as they get all teh gear given to them etc. Oh well, I'll keep doing my nets in whites. saves my training kit for fielding training as I'd never do warm ups, fielding training in whites. I have been wearing black trainers though as they are old and it saves scuffing up my new ones :)

Couple of videos from the back end of last season, coming back from a neck/shoulder nerve injury so lacking a bit of top hand at times.

Fancied a bit of range hitting....Some agricultural swipes included in the uncut versions!

Couple of things... Certainly a different technique... Don't know I've seen too many batsman who hold the bat like that with the face directly at the bowler and chopping it down on the inside toe edge...

And I want a bowler who bowls half volleys at me all day long lol

Good vid mate
Title: Re: Videos of you playing....
Post by: 400notout on December 05, 2015, 12:51:46 AM
Just do what I have to to get the bat down straight, I think that's possibly a bit more exaggerated than usual because I'm putting so much bottom hand into it, but it's definitely quite open a bat face normally too! I think the v's of my hands go straight down the spine as opposed to the textbook way, I'll have to check back to see if it's changed a lot!

Yeah that's absolutely not how I'd train, just fancied clearing the fence a few times! Half volleys on the machine does no one any good!

I thought this! Don't you know the forum rule?! Set it to half volley length and show everybody how good you drive the ball :p

Does look like 90mph (despite what the machine said) maybe its the camera fooling me! Maybe i should wait till i get on the bowling machine to repost what my batting is like 👍

Sorry guys forgot to read the rules. Next video I'll go back to basics only half volley drives!

I just wanted to work on my reactions, working on getting into positions and picking up the ball a lot quicker so rather than late cutting some of those balls over off stump I'd rather be pulling them. (I got 1 away near the end which was quiet pleasing)

My sessions are set up as
4 rounds Spin
3 Rounds Front foot 70mph
1 Round  Front foot 95mph
3 rounds back foot 70mph
1 round back foot 90mph

Another rule... We need to see pictures of all your kit! Sorry mate but rules are rules ;)

All constructive criticism/feedback welcome!

By straightening the back leg it pushes your head and shoulder forward and over the ball. It'll help you point your leading elbow a bit more and you will have more power through the check drive!
Good luck and have fun!

Battery or mains running the machine, did think it looked very gentle for 95, when ours is at 90+ you only see the ball drop into the machine and then hit the back wall.

And yeah haha it felt plumb when it hit me

To be fair you have made a bit of a noise about it being that fast, see the video name and shot of the machine before starting.

I've been working on a few things over the winter. Trying to play with a stronger top hand , higher lift of the bat ( see photo ) not planting of the front foot as much. I know there is lots more to work on but here are a few mins from Tuesday net.

Some more Videos uploaded today. I was focusing on my 1st Xl boys but Kane Williamson is in the middle net again. He was training for about an hour and training different parts of his game. When the coach was using the Sidearm they were absolute thunderbolts.
Had a good chat about his gear also. He doesn't change weights for different formats, just uses the same bat for everything until it dies. Pads are exactly the same as we get and they are small mens. Uses Stretton Foxes. Doesn't like the new GN gloves something about the leather so has stocked up on last seasons. Said he loves cricket gear as well. Absolute champion bloke and had lots of time for our young lads.

He's the Northern Districts batting coach. Ex Black Cap Matt Horne. Great guy as well. More bouncing ideas off each other, asking for feedback. I don't know how he doesn't injure his shoulder with all the throwing he does, seems like batting coaches need to have good shoulders from what Ive seen.

This is the new bat I'm using in the Vids. Copied bat from Black Cap Dean Brownlie's GM. Very big all through the blade. Big toe (25mm) and Shoulders (20mm). 42mm edges and about 60mm spine right through the bat. Weighs 2.11 and feels that. Huge sweet spot and the heaviest bat Ive used.

Giant bouncy castle runs and cricket nets =perfect. Dump the kids and have a net. You win.

P.s. you need to complete your trigger earlier so you can get your feet to move into position better. (Or ditch the trigger) that will help stop you being pinned.

@Buzz I actually did even know I had one until the videos. Could you explain what you mean by completing it earlier and how that helps please? Cheers.

I think @Buzz is referring to the double (sometimes triple ) quick bat tap and tiny forward press of the front foot ( but , he can correct me if I'm wrong   :D). If you can have less time gap between the single tap at the start and the double/triple tap you might then get the forward press completed earlier .
When i watched your vids i thought only positive things other than 'geez he's still tapping/pressing so late , it looks like he's depriving himself of response time' .
I agree with Buzz in that you would potentially get pinned less often on the crease with only a half (or not fully extended) step forward if you had that fraction of a second extra stillness ( from trigger completion ) before ball release.

Cheers for the advice. Do you mean hold my weight on the back foot when the bowler releases the ball with only a half step front foot? I will definitely be working on the trigger movement next bat. As I said to @Buzz I was unaware that I had a trigger movement. Cheers mate.

I think if you finish the double tap a bit earlier you can complete the forward press a bit earlier thus being still for a fraction more before delivery (it looks like , on occasion , at point of delivery , your feet are still in the process of doing their trigger .... sometimes it looks like your bat hasnt reached the top of its backlift (is still on the upward arc) aswell because of the lateness of the tap).
If you were still , at release point for a fraction longer , then you could get a bigger stride in forwards , and not look pinned on the crease/only having a small/half step forward . Also , if you were still for that fraction longer , you could move further back when deciding to go on the back foot .
In terms of the trigger/front press itself , i don't think its how big or small it is , rather that if its not completed early enough , your weight will be taking you to that predetermined position during delivery , at which point its harder to adjust to going fully forward or back etc .
Perhaps , expermiment with your tapping a bit . You tap , then wait , then do two or three quick , light taps right at the last moment.....as an example,  if you did one less quick tap at the end , that might give you that extra fraction of a second to complete the trigger before delivery ( this is actually an issue that steve smith worked on early in his international career ).
Having said all this , its only a small thing , like i said earlier , your batting in general , looks really good . I like how compact you are and you keep your shapes really well . You look like someone with time at the crease , so if you didn't deprive yourself of a moment via the lateness of the trigger , you'd be the kind of bat that looked like they had all the time in the world .

Had a tinker tonight. Tried the early trigger for about the first few minutes and last 4 mins of the video. Definitely helped as you say with getting forward so will explore that. When I stopped doing the trigger I thought I was standing still before delivery only to find out on video that I was doing the small step trigger again. I honestly don't even feel I'm doing it and my shots were still ok. I think the early trigger for faster bowling will definitely help. Thanks @Biggie Smalls and @Buzz Ive been critiqued before and it certainly helps.

@potzy248 . No worries mate . Funny about trigger movements heh ?.... we develop them for a reason , so even if we try to stop them they tend to come back . So , i think the key is to embrace them in getting the positive out of them  ( to coil up and prepare /get synced for delivery ) , but not have them get in the way .
Cool that in one session of a little tinkering you're getting an insight of what modified /early trigger completion might mean for your own game .
Personally , i had a similar issue not long ago . I felt if i didnt have momentum going towards the bowler ,via my trigger , at delivery point , that i would be later on any bowling 70odd mph or quicker . Turned out to be counterintuitive ie / with my trigger finished earlier ,and a bit more stillness at moment of ball release , i feel that im about 5mph better off (in other words , i feel i have the same time now when facing 83mph as i used to at 78mph etc).

Also , having watched the vid in full..... when you finish tapping earlier your trigger steps are larger . When you are finishing your taps later your steps are smaller ( as if you are interupted in travel /trigger steps by the arrival of the ball ) .
It does look like you have more time with the earlier trigger completion . But , the earlier trigger completion is having the effect of the steps being a true one-two /front-back foot shuffle trigger .
Look at where you finish up . Is that where you want to be ? If so , cool . If not , work towards that earlier trigger completion but with similar , smaller step distance( in that trigger movement) as like before ( to me that would be the ideal). For the moment , the shuffle might just be exaggerated because you are consciously trying to do something a bit differnt to your current instinct.
I guess ,if you feel like you like to play on the onside a lot , then the larger shuffle /trigger movement could really work for you (think steve smith , but not to that degree). If you feel you want to play more to the off (or evenly to both sides of the wicket ) then smaller shuffle/trigger would probably be better for you ( or if you like how that bigger shuffle feels , then you can tinker with taking a guard more to legside than currently , so you still wind up in the same spot ).
All just part of the tinkering process , just feel them out , decide yay or nay , and don't think too much/too negatively about it while batting . You can look at footage afterwards.....and ultimately,  you can abandon the tinkering if it starts scrambling your batting instincts too much .....so , no sweat !  :D

Been adjusting things a little in nets so far this winter - noticed through coaching and about of video that I'm fidgeting about far too much pre-delivery which isn't helping my consistency (which wasn't great last year), so I've decided to try a trigger as a way of consolidating that fidgeting into one movement and then staying still. Gone for just a small step straight back as I don't want to change too much, just move myself into a still position before delivery. Still need a little work as I think I'm triggering a bit late some of the time, but it feels good and I think I'm picking the ball up well more consistently than I was before. Plenty of time to wear it in before the season, any feedback welcome.

Looks good if you ask me but a fair few times your triggering and then not moving again meaning you compensate with your hands which is fine indoors with naff all ball movement but when you get outside and it's seaming etc this becomes a problem. I had the same issue and really struggled because of it through early games when the decks favoured the bowlers. Only way out of it is forcing your head right to the ball and your foot will follow.

^ How do you get out the most?

The camera angle is limited and I can't see the ball trajectory at all but here are my observations...
Your hands tend to fall away from your navel/body area and you make a last second adjust when lining up the bat. Most of the time it works fine but against a quick out-swinger, pitching from middle-off, will have you reaching and edging - 5:04 -5:11. Because your hands are dropped away, your bat is arching from a wide angle - gulley position to straight 4:51. You should've nailed that cover/off drive in 4:52 but the ball went square. Anything that pitches middle/leg, you are cleanly putting it away on the on-side.

Keep your hands close to your navel area and line up your shots with your shoulder dipping first (while keeping your hands close). That would keep your bat's arc straighter, coming down from 1st slip line, instead of gulley or wider.

Cheers for the input gents, I'm not too worried about not moving my feet much post-trigger as long as I'm transferring weight well, that's always been how I've batted and I tend to do well when the ball's doing a bit.

@InternalTraining - must be the angle throwing you off bud, the one I've played and missed at was 5th stump rather than pitching middle, just should have left it! I'm pretty confident with my general technique so not looking to.mess with that, off the top of my head I've nicked off once in the past 3 seasons so not concerned there. Change to a trigger is aimed at getting me on more consistently still positions and picking up the ball bettermore of the time as a result, made too many slight misjudgements or silly mistakes last season.

So. First chance of an outdoor net due to the rubbish weather.

Getting used to the ball boucning higher than 10inch took a few balls.

Not my best net, not my worse. Had fun and that’s why I play.

(Note, only a small proportion for he video is helmet cam, majority stump cam)

A little bit of sidearm action from my practice session on Monday. Hopefully this works... - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-mgFVODF5m_7vheDh1SVSQlhv8aK6qUg/view  OR https://youtu.be/t81LT1dYE1Q

We did this for a little bit after taking some throwdowns and bobble feeds. Things I am trying to work on this winter:

- Hitting the ball later
- Engaging the bloomin' left side of my body (it's lazy, very lazy) particularly when leaving the ball but also when driving through the offside

Things I am taking from this to work on:

- Falling over a touch and missing out on deliveries outside of leg stump
- Bat coming down with a slightly angled face and therefore losing me some power

P.s I bat with a slightly open stance but with my backfoot lined up to point - it stays like that when I drive the ball...  ;)

Any tips or drills I could put into practice then please let me know - or anything you spot please flag it up. I am relatively comfortable with my game at the moment (knowing I score a lot on the onside and being happy with that has helped) but always looking to improve.

Hi Dan, many thanks for your thoughts, it's always good for me to hear about my game from others. I'll always listen to anyone as I think its quite easy to blinker yourself especially when in the moment, so thank you.

I think i'm going to keep working on really getting my head to the ball and hoping it drags my foot into place / gets him actually moving for the time being. I know my front foot starts on middle and when the ball is outside off gets to off stump for the majority of balls, even those drives outside of off. Looks like it's going to be lots of throwdowns without a bat and catching the ball at our next session on Thursday - get my head and feet going some more.

I think from watching myself back your point of just falling forwards is correct. I also think adding to it, that I am falling forwards towards a mid off area, rather than what would be preferential and falling towards (If i was to fall at all) the stumps at the other end.

It's always good to have a go at whacking a few at the end  :D we try to find balls that are swinging nicely out of the sidearm and play as a full innings when we can but when you know there is only a few left its good to get your hands through some. Thank you once again for your thoughts.

Good technique. Question for the batting experts.
Why did he miss the second ball and why did the fifth ball not go where he wanted?

Second one I just missed I think - machine was supposed to be set up for straight/off drives and I tried to play it through midwicket. Maybe head fell across a bit if I'm being critical.

Fifth I have a tendency for my shoulder to dip down the pitch rather than to the ball, which means I end up cutting inside it slightly (bat path out to in) - normally ok wide or straight but that one demonstrates what happens when it goes wrong and the ball is in the 'channel'.

Think your head was the key to the 2nd, fell right across if you pause the video.

Think you're also right about why sometimes you weren't hitting where you wanted to, think it's too much right side and not enough left side which causes you to open up and slice

I have a tendency to do this too. Only tip I could give you is when you're next netting put a bat behind your heel of your back foot so you make a conscious effort not to step back

Story of my life this haha. I had coaching to stop be doing this. Basically put a stump on the floor behind your back leg. and if you touch it you will know you are doing it. Eventually i stopped but i do creep back into it now and again. it's frustrating

Hi All,

Been working on a few things over the last year or so really trying to simply my setup and just let the bat flow. A lot of people would say that having my bat down as I now do would hamper the cross batted shots but the cut and pull are actually some of my strongest shots so the change hasn’t been to the detriment of that at all.

I play Lancashire league which isn’t an ECB prem but is the same standard. I’m a middle order batter and my job is to just go out with good intent and score quickly, I’m at my best when I’m not really thinking about anything when batting.

Had a net this morning with top quality bowlers and then this short throw down session afterwards.

Any comment welcome!

Also I’m going to post a picture of my kit in the 2021 thread next week when my second pair of spikes arrive so look out for that

@King pair Some lovely shots in there mate, not that I'm qualified to judge too much as I'm not much of a batsman!

Only comment that I might make is that you look like you get a wee bit cramped up sometimes when the ball is angled in to your front leg/hip? Maybe something to work on with someone who has the technical know-how to look at it.

Funny you say that actually, our pro this year said something similar to me. Suggested maybe opening my front foot up a little so I’ll definitely be trying that on Tuesday.

I don’t usually struggle on my

Second bowling machine session of the season on the following link:

https://youtu.be/uSkhGVR5UFI

For context, our bowling machine provides what can only be kindly described as ‘natural variations’ and our net is a little bit prone to inconsistent bounce - I know I could do with getting further forward.

Any comments?
