Normally ashes winners lose the odi's. Don't see it happening this time.
Don't see England winning a game. Probably why no thread
Interesting that Chris Jordan has been selected.
-
Cook didn't last past the first over
-
And with that Alastair, I'm off to bed.
-
Joe root's got no clue at the moment
-
I've read a bit of stuff on here about how good Joe Root could/will be in the future. After watching him this summer and that last painful half hour I have no confidence at all in the kid. Scratching around for 20 balls and then wasting the one review when he was clearly out, reminds me of Watson. Terrible to watch at the moment and I think needs what happened to Clarke when he was dropped from the squad altogether. Looks out of his depth.
-
Agree with potzy; getting dropped would probably do Root a world of good. That being said, Watson pulled through.
Sort of. :/

No co-incidence that the two who had a lot of issues in the test series both struggled.

They must not teach how to catch a ball in Zimbabwe hey lads

They must not teach how to catch a ball in Zimbabwe hey lads
Bad drop, but to put a potentially racist comment like insinuating country of birth is the reason is a bit harsh. It is not as if every catch is always taken.
-
Settle down fella how is that racist in any shape or form. Everyone drops catches, was using polite sarcasm and a little jab that England have a bloke from Zimbabwe playing for them. Take a chill pill hey.
Just an edit here, I've played high level cricket in the uk and Australia with Jamaicans, Indians, Pakistanis, Zimbabweans, South Africans, Sri Lankans.....have the utmost respect for anyone of any race. To even mention a comment as racist on a forum is pretty offensive mate.
Anyway back on topic....England should be well on top, fielding is letting them down a bit.
-
Buttler has form batting top 4 in the big bash why is he batting at 8? Bloody annoys me.
-
potentially racist comment
You are an idiot.
-
Anyway back on topic....England should be well on top, fielding is letting them down a bit.
Why should they? Dropped chance aside, they didnt make enough runs and arent taking any wickets, aust will cruise to victory with a number of overs to spare.
-
Explaining what you meant by the comment will probably clear it up.
-
The Aussies are even having to walk to make a game of it!
-
The Aussies are even having to walk to make a game of it!
That was out mate.
-
Thats ridiculous.
Keeper says its a catch, then its a catch, end of story, umpires mucked that up and have made butler look bad as a result when he hasnt done anything wrong.
-
Quite. Clear, clean catch - even the batsman accepted it.
-
I have to say the bowling unit came up with a great plan when they said, we have to make sure we bowl multiple longhops each over as it will scare the Aussie openers.
-
This is where we will miss an in form Swann who would come on early and stem the flow. There isn't even a spinner in the side? What's going on? Buttler bats at 8 and Bopara is the 5th bowler? Strange team selection.
-

Gold.
Its a catch 22 though. At MCG the shortest boundary is straight, so both teams have tried to make the batsmen hit square. Trouble is, blokescat this level dont have much issue with short bowling.
As I write, rankin pitches up and gets smashed straight.......
I would have thought england could have made better use of butler who has been sensational in bbl3, as has hales.....wright, etc ..im not sure cook is in englands best odi team.....
-

Couldn't agree more!
-

England and AUstralia seem to have very different theories as regards the selection fo their ODI teams - England go for conventional cricketers at the top of the order, whereas Australia pack their side with hitters all the way down.
-
Our team selection is a joke. Root who is so out of form gets dropped from the test side, yet he's still first choice no.3. Cook isn't even in the best 6 ODI batsmen in England and with his current form shouldn't have even been considered for selection. Buttler at 8 and no spinner. Just how can they get it so wrong!
-

3 of the top 4 is the same as the test team..
I think thats because of whats around atm. Usually aust will have an anchor man to bat around, marsh has played thzt role most recently.
Eng have the perfect anchor man in bell, but you cant open with 2 of them. I would have bell and hales at the top. With the almost t20 field restrictions at both ends of the innings and 2 new hard balls, you need a striker or 2r in the top 3. Cook bell root is probably the worst 3 eng could put together from what looks like an embarrassment of riches in the squad.
-
England have lost one of the best accumulator in ODI cricket - Trott. Someone who can keep the board ticking over.
They need to find one who can do this, and fast, or change their batting mentality.
-
Whilst WArner and WAtson are int eh top three of the test side, they are definitely hitters rather than accumulators!
-
Whilst WArner and WAtson are int eh top three of the test side, they are definitely hitters rather than accumulators!
Nah, accumulators, just very quickly and in multiples of 4 :) although in multiples of 0 in wattos case tonight....... could you be any earlier on that shot.....thats why I hated 3, open or 4, not 3, youre either in openi g anyway or sitting waiting too long
-
You are an idiot.
Remember peeps, awp knows everything and you are wrong
-
Remember peeps, awp knows everything and you are wrong
Are you and he in a club....
-
Oh what fresh hell is this?
Top of our order who has 2 guys woefully out of form - neither of whom go any runs. Buttler batting at 8 is ridiculous.
Bowling unit contains Rankin who is way out of rhythm and Bresnan who is so poor at the moment. Broad had many days off after the test, why does he need more of a rest?
No spinner??????????????? I know it's short boundaries, but you've got to give one a go.
This is painful, several players look a little shell-shocked, and for those mentioned above, they've not picked themselves up yet for this series.
So, so frustrating!! Who else is in the ODI squad? Broad for Rankin, Tredwell / Borthwick for Root, anyone else for Bressie?
-
Luke Wright is in awsome form in bbl3 for the stars...
-
Team Selection was embarrassing. Nothing made any sense whatsoever. Spinners change the tempo of the game and short boundaries straight but not square. It's like England are just going through the motions. When has 5 seam up bowlers ever been a good strategy in an ODI?
-
Tredwell would have been really difficult on this pitch. A complete missread by team england...
-
Giles for England coach? Laughable!
Didn't see the batting, but I suppose the positives are Morgan and Jordan?
-
Just how does Bresnan get in this team? Another one dropped for the last test as clearly not fit, yet first choice come the ODI's. Going at 7.5 per over as he trundles in to bowl. I run in faster than him and I'm a batsman. People complain that Bopara's playing but his bowling looks as good as Bresnan and he'd be a far better no.9.
-

Bopara is never in a million years a bowler that should be bowling 10 overs in an ODI. Bits and pieces cricketers and he didn't need to play with Buttler in the side. Tredwell would've been something different, even Doherty had relatively acceptable figures.
-
England's obsession with having bits and pieces 'all rounders' in ODI cricket is the reason they can't win an ICC 50 over event.
Pick 6 batsmen, 1 all rounder and 4 proper bowlers.
If any of the top 6 can bowl it's a bonus. If any of the bowlers can bat it's a bonus.
-
They must've had a team meeting in which they thought this was a good balanced side. That worries me a lot.
Bopara probably can't believe his luck that he is still getting picked to play.

This!
I've liked watching Jordan bowl this morning. He has had no luck but appears to have a decent attitude.

You say that but Bopara has 6 overs for 30. Bresnan has 7 overs for 45. I'd say never in a million years should Bresnan bowl 10 overs in an ODI. He's the bits and pieces cricketer who's not good enough with bat or ball.
-
Bopara's role in the side is a waste of time though. Buttler can bat six and a frontline spinner can bowl his overs.
Agree on Bresnan also.
Is Carberry injured? If so that's another huge error not picking the guy in the format he is best at.
-
Rough on Bopara - his bowling looks more threatening than Bresnans, and he should score more runs. Worth it as 6th bowler.
-
Bopara deserves his place in the team on current form. Averaged over 50 at better than a run a ball in ODIs in 2013 and took his wickets at a better average and economy rate than both Broad and Bresnan.
-
Ive defended england to the hilt on these boards but im getting worried the thinking from the top has gone wrong.we are nit trying to get wickets here, way too defensive.
Bopara is a decent player but we should have tredwell or briggs in as a specialist.
Carberry should be in for root and leave out rankin- hes powder puff for such a big bloke
We need to start changing our thinking....and we need to do it quickly
-

A nice little 101* vs Ireland helps with that average...
-
Oi! Zimbos can field ;)
-
i think you can throw averages out of the window on current players form, we need to pick players that are capable of scoring runs and taking wickets.
Cook looks a spent force to me and needs to step aside and get himself ready for the summer with india and Sri lanka. Plenty of other options on the bench to get in instead of him as hes woefully out of form as is Root.
Jordan was a positive in this game, Rankin IMO will never be anything better than an above average county bowler that troubles the county circuit batsmen. Bresnan has had his time and its time to look at alternative options beyond him now in ODI format.
-
I thought Jordan was unlucky and bowled very well
-
Let's look at the positives from this game:
Gary Ballance looked decent with the bat
Chris Jordan bowled well
Jos Buttlers batting (he should be up the order)
If I'm scraping the barrel Eoin Morgan did alright
And errrmmm.... That's it
-
cook is in shocking form right now..... rankin didnt bowl as well as he did in the last ODI again aussie back in september...
ballance, morgan bats well, buttler did alright, chris jordan was unlucky, bopara is a good allrounder and should keep in the squad.....
wondering why carberry or finn didnt play, just because finn 'confidence' is low, surely not playing him makes it worst...
-
Finn's ability can't be any worse than RAnkin's at the moment surely?
Did the post match interview have the usul bland, boring soundbites "we didn't quite hit our areas", "we were a bit short of the performance targets for this game"?
Utter bollox, management need to take this by the balls and put the best performing XI on the field, using the guys who's minds are in the right place.
Scraping the barrel, but guessing -
Carberry
Bell
Ballance
Morgan
Bopara
Buttler
Stokes
Broad
Jordan
Briggs
Finn
Looks a batter light, but what can you do?
-
Quite like that team Fattus
-
Finn has major problems Jason.he is low on confidence, his run up is still being worked on but he has developed a kink in his action
Right now he needs specialist advise and work...probably back in england
You may well ask why he cannot get that with the england coaches
Angus frazer was at our league dinner last november and i think the best person finn needs is angus himself to help him
Im not a bowler but some have long run ups naturally
-
Avoided the forum as sky plused it.
Well batted finch
Well batted balance
Aus quite clear the better side and deserved a win, but I believe Clarke and finch should have won it in ones and humiliated England by winning by 8wickets.
Bell and Morgan should have gone on to score more
Jordan bowled well.
Root having best figures shows we needed an actual spinner not part time.
Cook is an out of form test player. He should in no where near the odi team.
Cook is a test captain that just got battered, he should be no where near the odi captaincy, his lack of attacking mentality cost us, why take a slip out in the 6over? He needs dropping and sending home. You are no good to us.
Root seemed to think he was playing in white, and didn't do a great job of that,
We have an awfully selected side
Why did we bat the entire innings as if we was keeping wickets for the last ten overs and then never ever tee off?
Why is pietersen always dropped from odi's? Yet when he's aid he didn't want to play Odis only test and t20s there was uproar in the England camp and media? Makes no sense!
why is Giles near this side? If flower needs to go, Giles needs to go with him.
I can see this odi and t20 being 8-0 to aus.

hmmmm snicko suggests he hit it, so was right to review in theory just unlucky it didn't show up on hotspot. But your in a far better position to judge someone's batting ability than anyone else so fair enough
-
Buttler has form batting top 4 in the big bash why is he batting at 8? Bloody annoys me.
Because its a longer format of the game, whats his experience and form like batting at 4 in 50 over stuff?
And incidentally I think his last t20 knock he made 0 from 2 balls, good form???
-
Well just watched it without reading anything..
Joe Root is out of his depth i feel sorry for him now he is in the spiral of form.
Sorry if you like him he has not got the game presently and i susect anybody who rates him currently is a Yorkshire person he just about stiffled the whole innings.
Ballance looked decent and a good prospect, Bell did what Bell does get a semi decent total then buffs it.
Buttler and Morgan added impetus but i would like England to think out of the Box batting wise it was one of them yeah lets pat our self on the back we got 250 plus.
Australia Well Fich showed what a class act he is in limited overs cricket be it 20 or 50 overs i have seen enough of him both on Tv and i got to watch him live a few times when i was down under a good talent who needed the penny to drop a world class limited overs batsman.
I do not rate Doherty but he did a great job we seem to be making the average look good but fair play to him Coulter Nile flatter to deceive, decent but not anything special and i have seen a fair bit of him.
Overall a very ordinary performance one which we where comfortably stuffed to be honest but it becoming boring moaning so come on England...
Currently a state side would beat England in any format..
Give Root a rest let him discover his game too much too early for the Great hope
-
Because its a longer format of the game, whats his experience and form like batting at 4 in 50 over stuff?
And incidentally I think his last t20 knock he made 0 from 2 balls, good form???
He had a 60 odd and a 49 in the big bash. I didn't say he should bat top 4, he should be earlier that 8 surely everyone thinks that...C'mon
I'm going off form in the middle, runs in any format is form.
And his List A average is 52 batting top 6. Complete waste at 8.
-
I want England to be inventive lets get some real impetus early on lets get a decent pinch hitter out there or somebody who might look to hit a 4 at least...
-
The guys out of form need sending back to their counties and need to play games to rediscover form.no point flogging them around aus again to prove more once again how out do form they are in.
Cook got out how he has all ashes series, root nicked it but just got unlucky with it not showing but he was batting terribly. Bell did what bell does and the rest did well/ok given the start etc.
Rankin is not good enough, he's better than the current tremlett but worse than the old tremlett and at 29 isn't going to improve or get faster. Send him back to the associates and county cricket to be the big fish there (which to me shows up the quality of county cricket if he's 'terrorising' them). Like the look of Jordan though.
All in all, beaten by a better side but didn't expect anything less when I saw the team sheet tbh.
Giles out!
-
It is interesting that buttler was signed by the renegades and thrust straight into 3.
Then watching the big bash, captains are wary off him because he can hit 360degrees as they say.
He came out to bat today, and again, Clarke seemed wary of him, and spent quite some time setting fields and discussing tactics with bowlers.
He did this for buttler more than any other. Batsmen?
The Aussies obviously rate him as a batsmen. So why can't England? To have him bat at 8 is ridicolous. Maybe he should be at 6? But why not think "outside the box" and play him at 3? Give him a chance of some power play action.
IMO he also bats to low for England in t20.
England have always bemoaned they don't have natural hitters, well they do now, yet seem to be scared to use them and stick to the "250 is a good steady score" tactic
It's 2013! I doubt England could defend 350 with the attacking players other internationals pick!
-
Why has alex hales not played an ODI? or Lumb?
-
Why has alex hales not played an ODI? or Lumb?
Exactly, you'd think atleast one would be opening for the power play.
-
Both pro40 winner, proven at T20i level as well
-
We not been in an ODI final since 92 and yet we still insist that building a solid foundation with traditional openers is the way to go. The rest of the world must be laughing at us as they have all moved on. We won the t20 worlds cup with a top 3 of kieswetter, lumb and pieterson. Why have we not recognised what everyone else has that you need to be positive at the start? Cricket has moved on but we are still stuck in the past. Wrong policy and as a result wrong selections.
-
I would pick Kieswetter as a batsman currently in our line up.
-
hmmmm snicko suggests he hit it, so was right to review in theory just unlucky it didn't show up on hotspot. But your in a far better position to judge someone's batting ability than anyone else so fair enough
Need one of those Fry from futurama memes to say "Hmmmmm not sure if agreeing with me or hassling me".
Yeah maybe an inside edge but he has done that many times this summer and been out 95% of the time. He fluffed around for a few seconds, if you hit it you go up straight away.
All you guys are right about the selections. Why on earth are guys like Lumb and Hales not in the side, the Aussies must be laughing. I'm sorry but that Balance guy did not look like anything special either, he looked scratchy throughout his innings. That Jordan guy looked good though. You have guys like: Hales, Lumb, Wright, Carberry, Tredwell, Broad, Anderson, Pieterson etc. Do you like losing or something?
I'm used to this Mikey Mouse stuff coming from NZ but England? just wow.
-
I would pick Kieswetter as a batsman currently in our line up.
I'd pick him to keep and just have Butler fielding
-
How about...
Hales
Kieswetter
KP
Bopara
Morgan
Butler
Stokes
Broad
Jordan
Triedwell
Finn/A N Other fast bowler
-
Lumb
Pietersen
Butler
Bell
Morgan
Balance
Stokes
Broad
Jordan
Tredwell
Finn
-
I don't quite buy into the Buttler at three hype because he is not good enough technically against the hard new ball - yes, he might come off occasionally but set against that chance you lose his genuine threat at the end of the innings. That said, I don't see why some flexibility is not shown - he should be coming in first available chance after the 34th so that he can play through the second powerplay.
On the wider hitter vs. accumulator debate, for me the ideal one day side would have two accumulators (one of whom can expand on that), four hitters and a wild card - one of these seven being an all rounder - as well as four front line bowler whose batting skills are of limited relevance. In terms of accumulators, I think Bell and Root (the latter because he can expand on that and also bowl some useful spin), my hitters would four from be Morgan, Pietersen, Stokes, Bopara, Wright, Ballance and, for a name outside the box, Malan and Buttler is the wild card.
-
This does mean Cook standing aside, which might prolong his effectiveness in the longer form...
-
There is an article on bbc sport page saying the county game should be changed.. Aka the number of counties shrank to increase quality..
-
been through that one already! :)
-

it was only this summer that they was talking about the size of the shield being to small and not producing the quality.
-
been through that one already! :)
I know we have, but I'd not seen it on the national news recently
-
It gets mentioned in one or other of the mainstream sports sources most every time England lose a game!
-

I just linked that to the "where do England go from here" thread. Lol
-
Cook won't stand aside or be dropped due to that being an admission of failure and an example of the current England set-up's inability to be flexible.
-

Quite. Anyone got an example of a time when that approach has actually worked?
-
Cook won't stand aside or be dropped due to that being an admission of failure and an example of the current England set-up's inability to be flexible.
Thats been a problem all summer.
The whole planet could see that when trott left, bell had to bat at 3, had to. But england only put him there when it was beyond too late, almost recalcitrant selection policy.....
Had bell batted at 3 (and therefore root at 5) from adelaide on, no way would England have lost 5 zipp. Big call I know, but I think things may have been slightly different had management, selectors and captain not (No Swearing Please) it up so badly.
-
Also, is KP available to be picked in englands odi team?
Bell
Hales
KP
Morgan
Butler
Bopara (or Wright or balance)
Stokes
Broad
Tredwell
Jordan
Finn
-

In English cricket you need to be Scottish to have the plums to drop yourself.

I think he's concussed.. Or someone has his account :)
The man talks sense
-
The man talks sense
Always.... maybe you should try it......
-
Seems odd that England are playing a warm up game inbetween a odi series.
Cook and root fail again
-
Ballance scoring runs once again yet some people in this thread seem to want to drop him which is odd to say the least.
-
Based on this game and last I'd be tempted to go
Bell
Carberry
Ballance
Morgan
Bopara
Butler
Stokes
Jordan
Bresnan
Rankin
Tredwell
(The bottom 3 could be changed I'm more looking at the batting line up + Jordan)
-
Alistair Cook is an outstanding young man, in any sense of the word, by any measure.
It is time for him to pull the pin on Odi cricket.
-
I see Cook and Root are both out for 1 in the Prime ministers Xl game. Time to have a clean out England.
-
I see Cook and Root are both out for 1 in the Prime ministers Xl game. Time to have a clean out England.
Dropped Bell to give them a straight 3 way race. Looks like Carbs will be in the next ODI, probably for Root as Cook is captain.
-
Once again cook and root can't buy runs. At least cook is out early so the strike rate is still high. But once against the total is about 30 short. Even though if all chances are taken they could win each game
-
Cook and root are in shocking form right now, carberry is in good form, drop bell to 3 bring carberry in for root, where is finn, much better bowler than rankin and with much more pace
-

I heard they were taking Finn right back to the basics as he has the Yips big time.
-
Root should have been given a break and allowed to go home at the end of the Test series!
-
No Broad in this game - is he rested for the next ODI also? If not, surely a good game to get a few overs under his belt?
-
Is Cook in bad form, or have the Aussies sussed him out? They're given him nothing short and wide for cutting and he just looks so uncomfortable going forward :(
-
Test Cricket Batting must be a really odd business if batters like Cook and Root are uncomfortable batting on the front foot. Doesn't seem to be a problem for Clark, Bell and others - plus surely Root has been getting enough front foot stuff in the county circuit for a few years.
I guess international openers don't train for anything pitched up these days :(
-

He's had to go away and work on his game before, I'd imagine he'll have to do the same again. Harris and Siddle have bowled very well to him for the last 10 test matches. Bet he can't wait to face someone new!
-
Carberry's one day form was what got him selected in the first place, so surely he has to play. Looks a different player when he can go out and give it a real smack.
Send Root home, he's played a lot of cricket could do with a break and time to gather himself for a big summer
-
I'm other news.
Finch got a duck today, 2nd ball pitched up and through the gate to smash middle and leg.
Did England pitch anything up to finch? Or just Bowl short as I remember?
-
That's cricket really, it didn't matter where England bowled the other day the pitch was a good one and Finch rode his luck.
-
Back to England.
Buttler top scored with 61. Our man in form, get him higher than 8!
Presidents xi 92all out. King Ravi. 4for3 of 3overs..........
-
Told you! Ravi is more dangerous than Bresnan!!
-
It wasn't like Finch didn;t give about half a dozen chances the other day, was it?
-
Told you! Ravi is more dangerous than Bresnan!!
Is bopara not England's odi player of the year?
-

Didn't he hit a pitched up ball to Mid off?

This tour has been a joke for the English team. One to forget really...
-
I heard they were taking Finn right back to the basics as he has the Yips big time.
They've sent him back to England this afternoon to work on technical aspects of his game... must have a serious problem somewhere.
-
Giles said he's lacking confidence.
not surprised with the way he's been treated.

the treatment of Finn is almost criminal. the kid has serious talent and theyve totally mucked him up. sending him home to england is possibly the worst thing they could do. if england team amangement had any brains at all then he would be sent to Perth and spend a week or so with the Dennis Lillee. no one fixes/helps/reinvents a fast bowler with genuine talent like the great DK Lillee.
-
What is England doing, sending finn back because he needs to work on his technical stuff?..... He has got the most talent in the team and probably the 3rd best bowler at the start of the tour, but England just basically ruined his talent
-
Ahhhh - a penny for Angus Fraser thoughts! Quite a mentor for the lad he was, and quite tight-lipped he has been.
Where will the management bus career out of control to next i wonder?

ok, I'll play..........
because of their troubles in facing the angle of the left arm bowler going accross them, england management now advise that Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen will be batting left handed from now on :D
-
Finn being sent home says a huge amount about the England bowling coaching. Basically admitting they not up to it and screwed his technique. Finn has the potential to be as good as McGrath if handled correctly. I remember Andy Caddick saying he needed to bowl all the time to maintain his rhythm. I suspect Finn is a similar type and having just sat and carried drinks for months hasn't helped.

Niiiice! I'll play too.
Moving forward in ODi's, all batsmen to apply the 'forward press' to the quicks in order to save time.
Tavare to be brought in as specialist batting coach.
Root to be front line spinner and pinch-hitter
Morgan, Buttler and Bopara immediately dropped for irresponsible batting
Finn as Captain
All pre-match menus to be slipped under Lehman's door
Let's change the colour of our kit again, that'll make us look hard!
-
England's record of screwing up promising youg bowlers is shocking - and has long been a bone of great contention around Yorkshire because for years we felt we were by far the greatest victims of the phenomenon. Richard Dawson, Chris Silverwood, David Wainwright and Adil Rashid all came back from winters with England or England Lions somehow the lesser - Rashid was by far the worst victim, going to South Africa an accurate leg spinner who ripped it both ways from a slightly unconventional action and coming back barely able to land a ball with a new mixed action which didn;t even meet the criteria of technical correctness!

Gold!
Big Daz would insist on a sample of each item on the menu before passing judgement....
I still cant believe this finn thing.....I thought at the start of the tour, he would be englands johnson (so to speak)
Do the lad a favour and send him to Lillee, otherwise I fear he may be lost

I like this game!!
England call up 1 player from each of the U15s, U17s, U19s to disguise Joe Root in the middle order and removing pressure from him.
All England players are given Instructions to grow facial hair in attempt to find Samson powers. Joe Root allowed to have one knitted for him.
England bring back the bold chest lettering on their strip, only for the word to be mirrored like an Emergency response Vehicle as this has proven a successful way to get ahead of people on British roads.
Joe Root allowed to have lights in the heels of his spikes which flash when he runs.

Yeah Joe Root took a bit of a bashing, I've nothing against him, it was just a case of easy target.

Wasn't that what Dave Warner said too????
-
So who do we think will be in the team for tomorrow game then?
-
Well cricinfo reckon Carberry for Root, but no change in the bowling, therefore no spinner.
I'd go with -
Bell
Carberry
Ballance
Morgan
Bopara
Buttler
Stokes
Broad
Jordan
Tredwell
Briggs
I would make Broad play (b*gger giving him a rest, his country needs him), yes briggs and Tredwell - why not - what have we got to lose? and Wankin can take a blow for me.
I know the real side will not be anywhere as near as adventurous as this, but hey ho!
It's difficult to balance the side at the mo - which 5 bowlers should play, and how far down can we bat?

If they can't get a balanced side from this squad they might as well resign now. Between Bopara, Stokes and one from Tredwell and Briggs they should be able to get a minimum of 20 overs. That leaves 3 quicks and 5 batsman with Buttler one of them. If Woakes plays you have a front line bowler who was also considered good enough to be a test match no.6 only a short time ago. I'd go:
Carberry
Bell
Balance
Morgan
Bopara
Buttler
Stokes
Woakes
Jordan
Bresnan
Tredwell
-
Stokes 'n Woakes :)
-
Having looked at the numbers from the last 2 seasons of 40 over cricket, going on runs scored and wickets taken the team should be:
Carberry
Luke Wright
Vince
James Taylor
Malan
Trego
Mustard
Chris Wood
Shahzad
Rushworth
Jack Shantry
If the ECB valued the 40 over competition as a feeder to the ODI team then there should be more than just Carbs from this list in the ODI squad. However, I imagine this team would be quickly despatched in an ODI in the real world
Also there does seem to now be a genuine hallmark of Ashley Giles on the team. A team of allrounders with Buttler & Stokes at 7 and 8 smacks very much of the Warwickshire way of late, and flies totally in the face of Andy Flower's previous ideas of 5 genuine bowlers and let the runs be scored by the top 6 (Remember Bresnan at 7!?!?)
-
Stokes has proven he can bat top seven and bowl ten so the side should be five frontline batsmen, him, Buttler, five bowlers - since the bowlers would likely include Bresnan and Broad we are hardly short of batting (bear in mind Chris Jordan is a decent bat at FC level too)
-
What time does the game start English time?
-
3.20am
