I'm shocked...might start a book on who he moves too. New Balance or Spartan perhaps?
-
Spartan is a good shout
-
GN could of possibly nabbed him as well, but let's be honest, he could name his price and Spartan & NB aren't short of a few quid
-
Does this mean there's going to be a big reduction in price on Joe Root players editions to shift old stock?? :D
-
I reckon new balance and the bats will be made by GM or B3 still....
-
this is a bit sad I reckon...
yes yes yes it's a commercial game these days but whether it's GM or Warsop or anyone else British it would be nice to think Root does something to boost a UK industry
as they said they have sponsored him since 13.
naïve viewpoint?
-
Didn't we have a thread on nb a the a few weeks ago which mentioned this? I got ridiculed for suggesting it.
Will be nb or Spartan. Look forward to see what specials there is.
Not sure if any truth in this, but apparently the relationship has been sour since his GM lid broke, and Root wanted to wear a masuri.
-

Well as other people have said, it's all UK industry, they don't all say "since in 1885" or whatever and some actively claim to be Australian or part of new balance or adidas or some huge technological machine capable of breaking new ground in bat making technology, but actually all cricket bats are made in a shed in nottingham, fact.
-
You're right about the big sports brands having a bigger budget. The traditional brands may have a long term issue as NB, Adidas, Nike and Puma chuck money at the biggest stars. GM do seem to have fewer and fewer international players, Slaz have all but disappeared.
England's recent new players:
Roy, Willey - Adidas
Ballance, Wood, Stokes - NB
I would perhaps add Puma to the list of options for Root, but only because he uses their shoes. But, if NB are going to be England's kit suppliers, then this would be my guess. Otherwise, Adidas, who have a large swathe of young county players in their stable.

Joe Root to Warsop would be an absolutel coup ha!
with Clarke retiring Spartan seem light on test stars with the bat and New Balance seem to be punting for Smith as their poster boy so out of those two Spartan would be my bet
-
Since Michael Clarke retiring Spartan need another big test player on their books to help flog gear, on another note where does Spartan get there money from?
-

Great minds :D
-
I thought Adidas were moving slowly away from cricket, what with NB taking on the kit suppliers deal. Could be wrong though, you hear all sorts on the grapevine.
Puma may actually be a good shout, didn't think about them either.
-
There was rumors of him going to NB floating around a while ago, my money's on New Balance with B3 making his bats. Just my opinion though.
-
Shows how little loyalty there is when money starts getting thrown about - to be sponsored by a company since you're 11, using the same kit taking you all the way from a youngster to being world number 1, to then drop them for a bit of cash is very poor IMHO, would've expected better.
Money talks!
-
How about TON as a wildcard?
End of the day it's about profits and GM are big enough to carry on without him. I suspect the huge amount they presently pay root could pay for 2 or 3 up and coming stars in the england setup.
-
Money rules the world and for Joe's sake I hope it doesn't corrupt, It'll be his manager/agent trying to get as much money out of companies for personal gains probably.
-

Really? Should Bopara have stayed with Warsop?
Companies drop players too.
-
Reckon it'll most likely by NB as mentioned on here a week or so ago, can't see him suiting Spartan imo.
Didn't realise NB were in line to take over the kit rights from Adidas (is there any truth in this?) although I reckon they'd be pretty decent going on the looks of the new South Africa kit they've done.
-
If id had the 18months he's just had, I wouldn't change my kit for all the tea in china. Batting is a superstitious game!!
-
Money absolutely talks and to be fair it's pretty easy for us to sit here in our regular jobs and complain about sports stars showing no loyalty it must be hard for them to turn it down surely? It's the same with footballers moving clubs for the cash, I mean if I work at Tesco's for £8 an hour and then Sainsbury's ring me up offering £15 an hour nobody would question my loyalty if I moved to Sainsburys, I know it's obviously much much larger sums of money involved but they're only trying to get the best out of their career like we all do day to day. That's my slightly brutal opinion on it all anyways haha :)
-
Really? Should Bopara have stayed with Warsop?

We went down to Warsop last year to choose a bat for my mate and asked them about ravi bops. they said they once made 45 bats for him IN ONE SEASON!!!!!!!!
erm hello? that's a lot of bats. :)
-

thank god you posted this. I'm not the only old romantic cricketer on the forum. The cricketing gods are alive and well
hahahah :)
-

"We have sponsored Joe for 11 years since he was 13 in fact so whilst we are naturally disappointed we of course understand that players move on for commercial reasons
Doesn't sound like GM wanted to drop him IMO
-
I didn't mean Root - you can't always have your cake and eat it.

You say that, but cricketers have a limited shelf life. Joe is in the form of his life and is probably one of the most "sellable" names in the game right now. In his position I'm prepared to bet 90% of people would do the same. As you say, money talks
-

fundamentally he won't be changing it though really, just giving it a face lift in terms of branding
i'd imagine his new gear will be exactly the same spec as it is now
-
On another note Adidas will be with England for at lease another 18th months but it doesn't say when in 2017 it ends.
"The deal extends a partnership dating back to 2008, and follows the ECB's completion of a record ten-year title sponsorship deal for domestic Test series with Investec last month. Financial terms of the renewal, which will run from 2013 to 2017, were not released."
-
New bat - the Spartan Root 200? Or Spartan JR 200?
The New Balance Root 200 doesn't sound too bad either!
But I guess he is ensuring his pension fund is topped up.......can't blame him.
-

Agreed, but I'm sure GM weren't paying him pittance haha!
-
I don't think he is short of a few quid Pete.
England players these days are rewarded real well.
still....reality says modern day sport is indeed money driven in all things.
Just for once thou I would be nice to see a major player using a small brand bat in a test. Just once and i'd be happy
:)
-
You can talk of brand loyalty all you want the fact is a professional playing career is short. All through their careers they are one bad ball away, one twist of the body in the wrong direction at the wrong time, one mis-timed slide away from a career-ending injury. Yes, it is true that afterwards they can go on and commentate and set-up cycling teams or whatever they would like to do but and we are able to sit here, now, and condemn them for 'money-grabbing' and their 'disloyalty' but realistically it is nothing more that sound financial planning that if we, placed in their position, would likely do the same.

I would like this as well but you don't see Messi or Ronaldo wearing Umbros
-
Players move for financial reasons all the time and often to companies like GM and GN. In South Africa Philander and Duminy moved from D&P to GM and GN respectively after being sponsored by D&P for a long time too. As has been said before, their earning lifespan is limited and thus they have to plan for the future.
-
I would like this as well but you don't see Messi or Ronaldo wearing Umbros
Or Lewis Hamilton still driving for McLaren!
It would be nice to see them staying 'loyal' but this very rarely happens these days.
If he is being paid (for example) £250k a year and another sponsor offered to double or triple that, then I could not criticise or blame him for that!
-

indeed you are right, he is our best player I hope whoever he uses he continues his form cos he's our (englands) player
the cricketing gods should not be under-estimated, I remember throwing my bat in a hissy fit once and immeadiatley the bat refused to score triple hundreds in the league. Never thrown a bat again :)
wasn't it rory mcclroy who went with Nike then couldn't hit a cows (No Swearing Please) with a banjo for 12 months??? is that right...
-
So does this mean GM no longer have any players on their books playing for England in the test arena (I'm assuming Lyth has had his time and will no longer play)
-

Harrington did the same, just after a real purple patch. Im sure he switched back. I imagine it will be bats made in same place, different stickers added.
-
I think it is New Balance
-
Does the dearth of England internationalists using GM mean that I can now call my GM bat 'niche' like some kind of cricket Hipster?

Yes, I mentioned a week or two ago that I'd heard from a good source that Root would be using New Balance from October.
Most people said it was a load of rubbish and he wouldn't leave GM, nor would GM let him go!!
-
I imagine it will be bats made in same place, different stickers added.
I'd doubt it, if GM made his bats I'd be surprised if they're happy to continue doing so - saying that they might not care so much, at least they'd get paid for the bats!
-

GM claim to make bats for all their pro players - if it has GM stickers it's a GM.
They also claim not to make for anyone else, so I think he'll be finding a new bat maker (assuming GM are being 100% honest about making all their pro's bats).
-
I'm sure that New Balance will have the skill to be able to copy Root's current bat?
-
I'm sure that New Balance B3 will have the skill to be able to copy Root's current bat?
I'm sure that the bat will be made using a very similar, if not identical process - meaning an exact copy will be made and every one produced after that will be exactly the same! ;)
-
Same process but completely different machines but his new maker should be able to do it
-
Without giving too much away, expect an October 1st announcement from a leading footwear brand. He will always be in beta - let's just say that!
I expect B3 will make the bats with the CNC machine, that would be my guess.
-
I'm sure if anyone can then
B3 New Balance will be able to do a sterling job of replicating a Gunn & Moore due to 2/3 owners having worked at GM in the past!

I'm sure he always liked using non-GM bats more anyway.
Conspiracy Theory Time ....
Root wasn't rested, his GM contract ran out and his new one didn't start and he didn't want to use a plain bat so he took a leave of absence :):):)

Gunn & Moore have announced that they are parting company with Joe Root as at the end of September 2015.
Not the end of September yet, so the press release blows that one out of the water ;)

The same guy that told me they fell out over helmets, say he's been rested as his back is absolutely shot and he's struggling to walk never mind play!
Hence no root in the semi final for Yorkshire, when other England guys were available.

This is all a bit different to the last time a high profile England GM user moved on:

Half of GM's newsfeed involved Root. Bet their writer is gutted he's leaving! ;)

Haha, the difference between that article and the Root one is brilliant. Anyone who thinks GM are happy with him leaving is clearly deluded - the amount of Six6 bats you see juniors using says it all. Massive signing for NB if it is indeed them.
-
I don’t think you can blame Joe for moving, as it has been previously said on this thread his career is finite and sums of money are vast. I think this is the same in any professional sport. Also, I think anybody reading this would find it hard not to follow the money.
If Joe was leaving B3 at this time, I would be absolutely gutted but would hope that I had the dignity to wish him well in his future endeavours, as Edward has done.
As for who he is moving too……
Streaky

Instead you might end up making a couple of his New Bats...

Does anyone else think the entrance of the big sportswear companies-and their attendant budgets- to the cricket market is detrimental in terms of kit design? In terms of design NB and Adidas have brought out some nice looking kit with some pretty stickers but it does not seem to be worth their while, for example, to produce anything more exciting than the mid-middled, slightly concaved safe option.
-
Bats -they're just ordering them in, purely from a selling point of view so never likely to be producing unusual shapes etc, I can't see an non-cricket company deciding to set up their own bat manufacturing operation from scratch. Big companies coming in to cricket have produced some seriously nice softs and shoes though.
Edit - in fairness, Puma has actually done some different things with bats, and Adidas put out Pellaras with quite different spine shaping for at least one season. Also the newest NBs are duckbills - even if that's hardly an innovation, it's a lot better than Kookaburra offered for a lot of years!
-
Joe Root is moving to New Balance. I know it hasn't been realised in the press yet but my friend who i play with, his dad works for New Balance and has already told me that Joe Root is moving to New Balance. Joe Root leaving GM was confirmed months ago but has only just been realised today.
-
Who would've thunk that a little known shoe company from my home town would one day sponsor a prospective England captain. :D
-
I spoke to one of the ladies at owzat and she mentioned
That new Balance are going big this season a few ranges of kit
Probably not as much as grays but enough that is for sure
-
Thats it. Seniorplayer and I will never buy a GM again

You would expect it to be NB... Especially as the company that makes pro bats for NB basically set up the production processes at GM.
A GM bat but being paid double the amount of money to use it? We would all be doing that if we were him!

They sponsored an actual England captain way back in the 1980s.

I wonder if any of the internationals these days are actually superstitious about their bats-or to tjem it doesnt matter which company they use-its purely financial.
A short scan of the memory i can only think of one current player using the same brand for years: A.Cook.
Anyone think of any others?

A lot of the Aussies who start out with Kooks seem to stay pretty loyal, Ponting et al.

He's no. 1 again according to the new rankings.
Sad to see big names with long histories leaving GM over the last few years.

Don't forget the transition from hopeless to potential world beater when he used Kookaburra

Makes sense to be honest with the impending battle between the two best test batsmen being with the same brand.
Typing this as I'm bedding in my TC 860s pads and 560 gloves, they're quite comfy. Will NB change their range up with Root on board? Still not 100% sold on the black/orange and red/neon colour schemes, the 2015 ones were gorgeous on the eye.
-
Not really current players though
Sorry, didn't read properly. Though, apparently, Atherton turns out occasionally, with his son, for someone's 5th XI!
-
He wouldn't be a bad ringer would be, provided his back holds up!
-
The move doesn't surprise me because at this point in his career he is at the top of his game on and off the field, and I don't blame him for taking advantage of that.
Root is already having back problems, and that has hurt a number of players careers through the years like Atherton and most recently Michael Clarke. I hope it won't be that bad that it stops him bowling or hinders his batting, but if there is potential for it to be a long term issue, then cashing in at this point instead of being "loyal" would make sense. After all, a bad back could shorten his career significantly - Atherton retired at 33 and Clarke at 34, without their back problems it is likely they would have played on longer.
But even if his back isn't going to be a long term problem, cashing in at this point still makes sense because we've seen batsmen have these great periods in their careers only for them to hit a rut or slow down. Or there is always the potential for that career ending injury. So setting himself up financially is a sensible idea whether there is a concern over his back or not.
In an ideal world it would be nice to have seen him stay with the brand that has been with him since he was a kid. But at the end of the day he's made a financial decision and hopefully it pays off for him.

You could put 2 and 2 together and get 12 here.
Joe root is from Sheffield
Sheffield is nicknamed the steel city
Spartans new range is called the steel216
But the Instagram post is of a bat based in Australia(it's in the kingsgrove shop). Would they release roots range in aus first? Doubt it.
Rumours burns has left kook. But is burns a big name signing?

Burns only just left GM so can't see another change for him just yet. The steel is Morgans model.

I did say we'd get 12 if we speculated on the post. Lol

AB De Villiers to Spartan?
-
Root going for more money is a no brainer, its his livelihood we would all do it. I'm sure GM have done well out of him to date, they could have always matched the deal. All top players will end up using big sports branded kit, just as they do in other sports, cricket is just catching up, due to the added publicity of IPL, big bash etc.

I so want some gloves like that, any normal thumb protection is useless when you get hit right on the end of the thumb, had a couple of really painful hits there this season even against modest pace. There was only some mid-priced GM glove that had it on the general market, but amazed that it's not standard on top-end gloves.

Totally agree! You would hope with them having our biggest player on the books they will take the English market a bit more seriously, like they do with Oz/NZ
-
I would hope that he is high profile enough to get his own colour scheme/range with NB. Considering the number of six6's I saw in the hands of youngsters last season I would think they would make a buck or three.

From what the guys at IJC said to me over Twitter the range/colour schemes are expected to stay as is.

It is a duffle in blue and bright green. Not sure if it's ever been available, or will be, as blue/yellow was dropped. And this years range is black/orange or red/yellow
-
I've never seen it, if I recall even Smith only had the red and white one

He's probably been given the team kit bag. Never going to get that on the back of his push bike.

Or the R000000T range
Love it!

Apparently his deal with NB is 200k. Can't blame him for swapping with that kind of money!

Like this comment:
It is understood Root liked the feel of the new bat — plus the size of the offer — to the extent of taking the risk of changing
Not quite changing his golf clubs!
-
'joe root picked up his old bat, liked the feel of it with new stickers and was persuaded to change'
:)
just going to throw this out there just for the hell of it......
Root stays with GM, has a range named after him and over 3/4/5 years gets a percentage of bats sold...how far away is he from the new deal?
just my two pennyworth
-
200k!!!! How can that stack up?
Assuming the profit on a £250 bat is £125 (and I'm sure that's well over the real net profit), and from that they wish to give say £25 of that profit to Joe, they would need to sell 8000 of his specific model to allow for this.
do they sell 8000 per year of a specific model?
-
Of course they don't! It's just an advertising move - I'd imagine it's probably more cost effective to pay Joe Root £200k than it is to spend that money on tv/print ads for example, particularly given the amount of media coverage (with associated pics/videos) that Root gets and will therefore feature NB products.
Suspect we'll see very few of the top pros using kit from independent cricket companies in the future.

you are right Edge, everyone who is anyone will be signed up to the big boys, kids watch what bat they have and beg their parents to buy the bat Root/Clarke(?)/Smith uses....the only problem is that's £300 quid...
WE, YES US,THE CLUBBIES are paying for this young and old because someone has to pay for these huge signing fees. Remember Woodworm, a million smackers between KP and Fred and 2 years later they got no money.
old me says boycott the big boys and stay independent, British if possible, not that there is anything wrong with Indian/Pakistani bats at all, but we still have a precious industry in this Country.
:)

He already looks cool with it all, suits him.
With gear and kids and stuff they're gonna make a fortune

Is it me or does this look like Root's head photoshopped onto someone elses body ?
Either that or he now has very hairy forearms...

It's not a tricky decision for me - when a small British batmaker like a lot of our forum sponsors can provide you with a quality custom bat for half the price, you'd be daft to buy something like a New Balance, even if the stickers do look nice!

issue is.. the small brands jump on hte price bandwagon now too.. find a small brand that isn't charging around the 300 mark for a bat!!
-
"kids watch what bat they have and beg their parents to buy the bat Root/Clarke(?)/Smith uses....the only problem is that's £300 quid..." - Plus the fact that generally the bats the pros are using aren't even made by the advertised company and simply stickered up bats of their own taste. Its all getting a bit crazy!!!!
-
Every time I watch pro cricketers play I always assume the bat in their hand isn't even made by the company who stickers are on it (except for GM) or that the bat is even the same shape you can buy in shops, but you're average Joe/Player won't know the difference.

its not the avg player either, players from top leagues to bottom don't know or even care tbh. They just decide what to buy and buy it, most without picking it up. Most don't really give a crap as long as it looks big
a USD used to be 'hand picked'... now, that's regular. retailers are having to find new USD's.. like Uzi in Birmingham with his 5 lanes... Vitas with their lane etc etc

I see your point here, but it's not quite as clear cut as that is it? You would have to factor in the pads/gloves/shoes/bags and assorted paraphernalia that goes along with it as well as the increased "visibility" of the brand in the cricket market, people may not buy an NB bat JUST because Root uses one but more people will see the kit on a more regular basis because a high profile player like Root uses it and therefore it is more likely to stick in peoples minds when it comes to deciding on new kit. Guy starts playing for his local side, decides to go get a low end NB bat because he's seen top pros using them, might not be a specific Root/Stokes/Smith fan but sees them on tv a lot and thinks if those guys use them they must be ok.
-
Plus this is really exposure for the shoes and the associated stash.

That's what I was thinking, I'm surprised the #1/#2 test batsman in the world doesn't command a higher deal to be honest!

Green seamers are the tracks he plays best on!

think they've missed a trick not giving him his own decal range - blue and white would have looked v good

Agreed. With the number of six6's about I would have thought it commercially viable.
-
Love how they are keeping up the charade of the surprise when everyone knows who it is!
Still gutted they dropped the blue/yellow of last year.

Not just you, was told by an NB rep that it was changed merely as it didn't sell well in 2015, he didn't seem to understand that having it pdc and barringtons only, and then not even getting the (minimal)stock to them by end of July would have an effect on there sales.

Ask the reps if they can get hold of the stickers.. Would, probably sell well alone
-
I would love a set of genuine blue and yellow NB stickers, think they look fantastic.

I had the gloves and they looked great and were really comfy. Orange/black is better than the red/yellow IMO but still not as good as the blue/yellow

I know where there is a stack of 500, but I have been chased of with rough willow when I try to "borrow" some.

Just want whites and a bloody duffle right now...

I still maintain buckles go on the inside, but that's a different discussion.
I liked this years NB branding much better than the new designs.
The yellow on red certainly isn't as easy on the eye as the white on red was.
As for the orange on black, that's a step backwards from this years yellow on blue

Better buck your ideas up and buy some new pads, most of us haven't seen buckled ones since the 1980s! ;)

By buckles I meant the plastic loop thing.
Only once did I wear Buckle up pads, a last minute trial for the school team when I was in year 7. Nobody knew it was happening until the day, so none of us had our own kit.
The fit of the pads was either flap around like mad or cut off the circulation! Thank god Velcro had been the only option for about 20 years when I took up the game!

Will launch a Twitter campaign for the whites...

The Red and Yellow stickers are a bit Batman 'KAPOW!'-y...
Blue and Yellow all the way for me too, not a fan of the 2015 colours
-
I said that about the whites on Twitter when I saw South Africas test kit. Looks very smart! And being a New Balance obsessive they would be something in my bag for 2016 definitely!

This is inspiring https://youtu.be/Gxwk646thiA

Goodness me that is awful

wow - maybe they should spend some of that sponsorship cash on hiring a better advertising team

That was a very short stint with Kooka.
I tried to do some research to find out when he signed with Spartan. Couldn't find a thing.
With Clarke's retirement, Spartan would have had a fair bit more cash to spare i guess.

Root is wearing a Shrey lid, didnt he used to wear the Masuri with the logo coloured out by pen not to upset GM?
