JB's contract with Adidas has been terminated today with immediate effect.
Apparently an amicable agreement between both parties.
-
That lasted long!
-
That’s the shortest sponsorship ever
I wonder why and I can’t be the only one..
-
Must follow Broad on Insta and saw the crappy new bat stickers
-
I assume NB have spent the entire Stokes budget (and maybe more) to prise a guaranteed Ashes player away from a rival, or there is something involving Bairstow that is not yet in the public domain that Adidas want to distance themselves from.
-
I immediately thought perhaps NB had decided to throw some cash about.
-
NB straight swap Ginger for a Ginger
-
Would love to see him in kookaburra stash.... can’t see it happening tho
-
NB was my first thought, now they have a big gap in their sponsorship budget.
Stokes to Adidas?
-
What is the NB keeping gear like? Not being a keeper I don’t pay much attention
-
I’ve seen the keeping gear, I think 17 model I didn’t like it
-
NB would make sense, keeps the strong Ashes presence and also helps them to push a bit more Keeping gear. Unless something has happened that the public aren't privy to (which I seriously doubt), then my money is all on NB (whoever it is would need deep pockets to prise away from Adidas!)
-
Yes good shout Stokes won’t be on the Ashes trip we don’t think so NB maybe getting a big signing
Normally players wait till the end of the contract thou?
-
I thought JB's sister worked at Adidas and it was a lifetime deal?
-

I think it has a built in megaphone to amplify the shouts of "niiiiiiice Gaaaaaarrrrrry" from behind the stumps. That's possibly just the Australian ones though...
-
He did get a written warning from the ecb regarding being out until early hours drinking not sure if that would effect sponsorship
-

Bairstow's the kind of bloke who helps your nan with her shopping and always has a polite chat. I mean, there's even video evidence to prove it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=893mYkHlBk0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=893mYkHlBk0)

Maybe it's something performance related in all the Adidas contracts as Roy swapped back to Slazenger after only a season with them, he hasn't been in as greater form as he was with GN.
-

Only averaged in the 30's in Tests this year but over 100 in ODI cricket which you could argue is more appealing to a sponsor.
-
I doubt performance is the issue, my guess is JB wanted out maybe comfort and preference
-
What’s your source @Vitas Cricket ? His twitter bio still says he’s sponsored by Adidas, this is usually the first thing they change!

An email from Adidas stating he's been terminated today and they will be updating their retail catalogues and marketing asap.
-
I bet New Balance have got him. But I hope not.
-
I hope he’s got himself a nice fat pay check, he’s worked hard on his game
-
I hope he’s got himself a nice fat pay check, he’s worked hard on his game
After all he's been through in his personal life the guy deserves everything he gets.
-
I wasn't suggesting he didn't deserve anything. Rather that New Balance throwing their weight around is getting a bit boring.
-
Suggesting Kippax may be a bit daft, then?
-
Suggesting Kippax may be a bit daft, then?
Yes daft suggestion :) but isn't it great to see Mark Stoneman sticking with his sponsor rather than dumping them straight away.
I think it shows a bit of loyalty in today's cut throat world, kippax make Stoneman's bats and he has done well with them in the last couple of years.
Who was it that changed their golf clubs and instantly started missing fairways all day long. Rory maybe.... :)
-
Suggesting Kippax may be a bit daft, then?
A return to simpler times when cricketers had their batmaker's name on their bats?

Madness

To his defence Nike were terminating all their golf contracts, and stopped making clubs...

2014 was a really bad year for Rory after that 2013 switch...

Bairstow confirms via his instagram story...

Odd that he'd leave without having something lined up, did Adidas fire his sister or something?
-
I’m sure he’ll have a sponsor before ashes commences
-
Anyone know what brand/model are the spikes in the photo?
-

Arent they New Balance?
-
If he doesn't have something lined up (which I presume he does this close to an Ashes series and would bet money on it involving New Balance), then something else must have happened behind the scenes for Adidas to want to split from him.
I'm still expecting him to have labels on those bats by Friday though!
-

Puma? They look quite like their bowling boots.
-
That was my thought but the toe looks a lot different on puma's - http://www.prodirectcricket.com/products/Puma-evoSPEED-Cricket-Bowling-Boot-White-Fiery-Coral-Black-Mens-Shoes-Bowling-Boots-155858.aspx (http://www.prodirectcricket.com/products/Puma-evoSPEED-Cricket-Bowling-Boot-White-Fiery-Coral-Black-Mens-Shoes-Bowling-Boots-155858.aspx)
I would still put money on NB.
-
I think it's safe to say whoever it is his bats will be smart. He seems to always want to go with classy understated stickers on his bats, using the legendy type Slazengers and then a strangely quiet bat for Adidas! I'd be very surprised if it's not NB though.
-
Perhaps he's making a beautiful statement.

Stuff like this doesn't matter when you're getting paid over 200k a year, you'll have whatever stickers the company give you to put on your bat.
-
Or maybe you won't?
-
It wouldn't take much to have every clubbie in the country frantically peeling stickers off their bats. You know what it's like...

LOL.
The grains on those bats are wavy and there is heartwood. I suspect, there is a butterfly stain on the other side of one of those bats.

No facts just silly speculation :)

Using the new scoop perhaps??
-
Surely they just terminated him because he received a formal reprimand from the ECB for something that has not yet been made 100% clear. Adidas might have just seen an opportunity to get out of the deal - after all cricket gear is not really a core market for them... clothes and sports wear yes but bats and gloves and helmets etc... I wouldn't have thought so.... given he had plenty of good coverage this summer I just wonder if they saw no real uplift in cricket gear sales and decided the ROI wasn't worth it.
Surely if he had had another deal lined up then it would have been a quick turn around to show him off... And I doubt he would have been posting blank gear pics with blacked out Adidas logos on his gloves.
He will pick up a good deal though... time will tell I guess.
-
Sign him up Gunn and Moore, proper bats made in England. Other kit made in the sweat shops of the world as per usual.
-
I’d be astonished if Bairstows contracted has been ‘terminated’ due to a minor conflict with the rules.
Echo the Gunn and Moore shout I think j trott did wonders for them, yjb could do the same
A bit odd there’s no sponsor so far thou!
-
GN for me
-
Puma. They need a high-profile bod.
-
All the England squad had a photo with their kit on today. Wonder if Bairstow’s is in there.

It's our friend JB down the bottom.

Can't tell what keeping gloves they are. This is fun this thread :)
Are the England players really sharing rooms? Thought this was done away with years ago.
I wonder how they pair up, I mean if everyone gets to choose there will always by some left who are just, well....not as popular 'mates ' as the others.
Root and ballance together I reckon 'I'll get you in for the tests Gaz don't worry' 'thanks mate'.
-

Wasn’t a benefit of being skipper back in the day was that you didn’t have to room with someone?

Yes most of my posts are tongue in cheek you got to have a laugh I do actually like this thread thou. The whole sponsorship thing is very interesting.
Still have the old naive thought a massive star player walks out with a bat that is blank from his real batmaker!! The only player to do that recently was Michael clark I think.
Bairstow will no doubt have a big sponsor soon thou-that is the way of modern day sport.
Look at Ian bell, must have a new sponsor every year, Ali cook same sponsor since day 1- why do two pro's have different thinking.
Makes me wonder sometimes-Honestly.
-
Well, some people try and rinse every last penny out of endorsements, others are more concerned about quality of relationships and grateful for the backing they receive.
-
I'm still hoping it's the beautiful statement.
-
Well, some people try and rinse every last penny out of endorsements, others are more concerned about quality of relationships and grateful for the backing they receive.
I'm going to guess Ian Bell has had his bat made at the same place for years, (regardless of what the sticker says) and would have a brilliant relationship with his bat maker. Why not get as much cash as you can from companies like Adidas during your relatively short career. I'm sure the bat maker is paid a decent price for the bats, keeping him happy too.
-
I agree. But For some people it’s not all about chasing notes.

Cook bats outside shoulder is cut off?
Has been for years.
-
Cook bats outside shoulder is cut off?
Because he chokes the handle so much that his gloves smash into the shoulder, so he gets rid of it . Nice way to lose an oz of dead weight !

Indeed. Left shoulder looking front on.

Cooks bat looks a lovely chunk of willow
Would love to have a little tap with that to check how soft it is pressed
Not sure taking a little wood from that areas gonna lose an ounce but hey ho
Didn't trescothick do the same to his bats?? Might have dream that

N O’Brien used too, it would save very little weight. You’d be amazed what an ounce of wood looks like. I’m sure Ryan posted up once just how big a chunk it is.
-
I know cane and willow arent the same mass/weight/density wise but when i chop the knob off the top of my handles the off cut knob usually weighs 0.5oz or a wee bit more.

Sometimes ethics and relationship outweigh this for some people. There are more variables to a happy and fruitful life than money.

Wearing New Balance spikes.
-
The shoes will mean very little, could still end up being sponsored by one of the other big brands (don't forget NB are the kit supplier so they'll all have been given a few pairs regardless of their equipment sponsor).
-
Our favourite ginger better hurry up or the Aussies will love it from the slips
' Oi , you pommie (deleted) not good enough to be sponsored are we sport?'
Excuse the sweeping stereotyping only for the purposes of the forum banter.
-
Terrifying stuff!
-
It’s rumoured to be a six figure sum per annum if you want your clobber to used by JB
-
Unsurprising when NB throw around 200k contracts for Root/Stokes! If he's after that sort of money then it'd have to be a global sports brand for them to get any hope of a return.
-
£100k would need to sell 400 bats at an avg of £250 per bat just to cover annual sponsor ship, can’t belive any company can expect to shift that many just because YJB uses that bat, espically has he really only plays test cricket
-
That's why it's left to the like of Adidas/NB to stump cash up. To them 100k is just a drop in the overall marketing budget, the number of bats sold is of very little importance to them.
To put it in perspective, a £250 bat to the trade is pretty much top end - would like to see any company sell 400 'LE' bats a year, let alone 400 just to cover the sponsorship of one player!
-
New balance don't just do bats though.. Pads, gloves, spikes plus all the other apparel and training gear. I guess the sponsorship deals are more about overall exposure for the brand not just to sell bats!?
-

With willow availability selling
400 LE bats per year has been easily achivable.
-
Yeah that's my point, cricket is of such little significance to NB/Adidas/Puma in the grand scale of things.
When you're spend X million per year on TV adverts, 100k to sponsor one of England's leading players for the year doesn't sound quite as bad...

£250 profit per bat, you mean?

How many top end bats from the current years range do you actually see being used?
Outside of the forum I don't think I know of anyone who's spend £400+ on a bat! The majority of players I know will buy a bat for whatever their budget is then use that bat until it's broken.
The volume may be achievable, but how many people actually buy a top end bat now the prices are so high?
-
If you say so...
Think about it worldwide sales by the industries top manufacturing guys sales of 400 LE bats per year not excessive.
-

For the big players like GM, GN etc I agree, but I can honestly say I've seen 2 Adidas bats being used since I've been playing, and I'm fairly sure one was a fake!

Maybe just a west country thing, but M&H clearly don't struggle to shift bats at a fair whack more than £400!
-
As Bairstow played today, did anyone see what stickers he had on his bat?
-
Ok, i found it and it appears just to be a plain bat with no stickers.
Not surprising really in how sudden his contract ended.
-
Still wearing his adidas pads and gloves.
This is a textbook bad break up. Still wearing the ex-lover’s clothes.
-
He's a Yorkshireman, gets not going to fork out for new softs when e's got some already...
-

A blank bat, New Balance shoes and the Adidas logos (badly) covered on his pads and gloves.
Will his OLS blank softs be delivered in time for the first Test? ;)

Just needs some puma bat stickers and he's englands first Charva cricketer
-
Textbook “I’m in the shop window” kind of activity, as he gets double bubble exposure via batting and keeping kit he’s gong to demand top dolla.
And quite frankly who cold blame him, look at titch. Your shelf life is only so long so cash in whilst the iron is hot as you never know someone is gonna pull ur plug.
-
Could it be Puma trying to one up Adidas. Considering that the two companies history?
-
Still wearing the ex-lover’s clothes.
You wear your lover's clothes? Crikey, that's a bit of a revelation to wake up to on a Sunday morning!

The timelines seem to fit together, maybe foakes is going to debut sooner than anyone thought.
-
He doesn’t seem the sort of character that’s just going to nut someone for no reason
Unlike warner and stokes who you could see wouldn’t need any provocation it’ll be interesting to hear the full story

I just looked at the date of Jake's post about it and the article, they match nicely, even if reality doesn't :D
-
Notice how the story breaks at around the same time bairstow shaves his beard ? He's going incognito, trying to lay low so bancroft and the cops wont recognize him ! :)
-
Rumours and mounting evidence point to a core of the England side being a bunch of Pi55heads
Surrey were the outlier
-
The BBC's cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said: "I understand from the camp that Bairstow and Bancroft were having a drink together. Their heads met. They carried on drinking together.
"More ammo for accusations of a drink culture, but this will not help relations between the teams."
Media blowing it out of proportion as per
-
Totally out of all proportion, thing is JB has a book out so he’s not short. Ask Kippax nicely for half a dozen new bats, go on line and buy yourself some kit, but properly mixed like GM batting pads GN gloves and a mix of keeping kit. On a serious note a few of the squad were given written warnings before the tour, JB allegedly being one.
-
Fox News, that bastion of accurate, considered journalism. Never been known to exaggerate or sensationalise a story at all...
-
Not allegedly. ECB announced he had been given a warning.
-
Not allegedly. ECB announced he had been given a warning.
Which in all seriousness is more likely to be for being out boozing late at night especially after everything that’s happened and him receiving a warning already

Bairstow

Still no sign of a sponsor...

50 or 100 in the third test might help. Wondering why Gray Nics didn't scoop him after Adidas dropped him.

I heard rumor of a big money GN deal coming in the new year, seems odd timing to let him go into the Ashes sponsorless though.

Probably waiting to see where things go with the series. If it's 3-0 why waste spending the extra cash when half the viewing population will likely switch off (I certainly won't be up at 4am again if we go 3 down!).
It wouldn't surprise me that if we win this test that he's then suddenly wearing GN come boxing day mind!

You would have thought after this test would be last orders for presents? Imagine being 10 years old and seeing your favourite keeper using GN kit on boxing day thinking "i wish i knew sooner so i could get his kit for Xmas"

The only thing I could think is that his contract with GN had been signed ready for 1st Jan 2018 and that when Adidas found out he was jumping ship they terminated his contract early. Still you would have thought the new sponsor would have sorted something out for the Ashes.

How do we know this?

You can see where he's taken off the stickers. And the shape. And he used an SS stickered up as a GN in the 2nd or 3rd ODI in Bangladesh last year iirc

Its gotta be a 2018 thing, surely? Some clause in his contract allowing either party to terminate subject to......etc, etc. And/or no new deal until 2018, or after X months?
I'd imagine he'll announce a new sponsor early Jan. Didn't Compton have something similar with Gray Nics/M&H?

Bairstow seems the best batter in current england lineup (even ahead of Root on these aussie pitches!) and still no sponsor..definitely must be some termination clause preventing him until some time..

Why would he put stickers of a new sponsor on and remove them?? Look like plain bats to me.

It's a welcome distraction from the disaster of a series he's taking part in...

Ohhhh dear, remember how well that went for Matt Prior! Get the feeling Bairstow will sign for whoever waves a cheque at him, in Spartan's case I'd have waited till it cleared at least!

Hope he gets a hundred with it cos he had a 2 year purple patch with grays and has changed to a bat with shocking stickers on it.
And Matt prior yes good shout !
-
How disappointing.
-
Surely he had better offers than this.
Or has more taste than this!!

This is the best picture I've been able to find

So do we reckon in the latest discovery this bat was a KP Rhino?
-
I was expecting GN or GM
-
Seems KP has confirmed it before Spartan

Quite nice that the bats represent a good cause, no?
-
3 year deal apparently, starting in tonight game.

Do Spartan actually pay the rhinos?
They've had high profile issues not paying their sponsored players in the past
-
I didn’t say anything about payment. I said that it represents a good cause. The fact another high profile player is associated to it, will make the money for preservation of Rhinos

Remind me where we think Spartan bats are made, someone?

In the Spartan factory, by Spartan's bat maker! ;)

Jonny... hey Eoin you had a Spartan didn’t you.
Eoin... f#*king spartan.... still trying to get my money they owe me through selling all the stickers they sent me on eBay.... problem is too many other sponsored players doing the same so they don’t sell for much.

Ha, imagine we’d all have a set by now if he was!

It might be a one-off Ashes sponsorship. Spartan has more or less focussed on sponsoring players in Australia and India (Ranji trophy and U-19 circuit). I don't see them going out of their comfort zone. It would be interesting to see how long will they last though.

I’ve read somewhere that it’s a 3 year deal

Dave at XX Cricket does the UK refubs and fixes for Spartan - but does not make them.

Spartan in Ranji?? I dont think there are any players using Spartan in Ranji trophy...its all SG, SS, TON and DSC.
-
@mo_town Sagar Mishra is one name that comes to mind. I was in India earlier this month and met a few Ranji players in Chepauk stadium. Some of them were using Spartan kit but most were SS, SG and Adidas. A few DSC bats were there as well. At Ranji level sponsorship stops with giving kits for free, no money is involved unless you are the next Tendulkar or Kohli.

He finally has his new Spartan keeping gloves I see on Instagram, don’t look particularly nice
