Title: Bairstow leaves Adidas
Post by: Vitas Cricket on October 27, 2017, 12:53:18 PM
JB's contract with Adidas has been terminated today with immediate effect.

Apparently an amicable agreement between both parties.

I assume NB have spent the entire Stokes budget (and maybe more) to prise a guaranteed Ashes player away from a rival, or there is something involving Bairstow that is not yet in the public domain that Adidas want to distance themselves from.

What is the NB keeping gear like? Not being a keeper I don’t pay much attention

NB would make sense, keeps the strong Ashes presence and also helps them to push a bit more Keeping gear. Unless something has happened that the public aren't privy to (which I seriously doubt), then my money is all on NB (whoever it is would need deep pockets to prise away from Adidas!)

Bairstow's the kind of bloke who helps your nan with her shopping and always has a polite chat. I mean, there's even video evidence to prove it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=893mYkHlBk0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=893mYkHlBk0)

Maybe it's something performance related in all the Adidas contracts as Roy swapped back to Slazenger after only a season with them, he hasn't been in as greater form as he was with GN.

Only averaged in the 30's in Tests this year but over 100 in ODI cricket which you could argue is more appealing to a sponsor.

Yes daft suggestion  :) but isn't it great to see Mark Stoneman sticking with his sponsor rather than dumping them straight away.

I think it shows a bit of loyalty in today's cut throat world, kippax make Stoneman's bats and he has done well with them in the last couple of years.

Who was it that changed their golf clubs and instantly started missing fairways all day long. Rory maybe.... :)

If he doesn't have something lined up (which I presume he does this close to an Ashes series and would bet money on it involving New Balance), then something else must have happened behind the scenes for Adidas to want to split from him.

I'm still expecting him to have labels on those bats by Friday though!

Stuff like this doesn't matter when you're getting paid over 200k a year, you'll have whatever stickers the company give you to put on your bat.

Surely they just terminated him because he received a formal reprimand from the ECB for something that has not yet been made 100% clear. Adidas might have just seen an opportunity to get out of the deal - after all cricket gear is not really a core market for them... clothes and sports wear yes but bats and gloves and helmets etc... I wouldn't have thought so.... given he had plenty of good coverage this summer I just wonder if they saw no real uplift in cricket gear sales and decided the ROI wasn't worth it.

Surely if he had had another deal lined up then it would have been a quick turn around to show him off... And I doubt he would have been posting blank gear pics with blacked out Adidas logos on his gloves.

He will pick up a good deal though... time will tell I guess.

Are the England players really sharing rooms? Thought this was done away with years ago.

I wonder how they pair up, I mean if everyone gets to choose there will always by some left who are just, well....not as popular 'mates ' as the others.

Yes most of my posts are tongue in cheek you got to have a laugh I do actually like this thread thou. The whole sponsorship thing is very interesting.

Still have the old naive thought a massive star player walks out with a bat  that is blank from his real batmaker!! The only player to do that recently was Michael clark I think.

Bairstow will no doubt have a big sponsor soon thou-that is the way of modern day sport.

Look at Ian bell, must have a new sponsor every year, Ali cook same sponsor since day 1- why do two pro's have different thinking.

Makes me wonder sometimes-Honestly.

I'm going to guess Ian Bell has had his bat made at the same place for years, (regardless of what the sticker says) and would have a brilliant relationship with his bat maker. Why not get as much cash as you can from companies like Adidas during your relatively short career. I'm sure the bat maker is paid a decent price for the bats, keeping him happy too.

£100k would need to sell 400 bats at an avg of £250 per bat just to cover annual sponsor ship, can’t belive any company can expect to shift that many just because YJB uses that bat, espically has he really only plays test cricket
Title: Re: Bairstow leaves Adidas
Post by: Neon Cricket on November 04, 2017, 04:01:54 PM
That's why it's left to the like of Adidas/NB to stump cash up. To them 100k is just a drop in the overall marketing budget, the number of bats sold is of very little importance to them.

To put it in perspective, a £250 bat to the trade is pretty much top end - would like to see any company sell 400 'LE' bats a year, let alone 400 just to cover the sponsorship of one player!

New balance don't just do bats though.. Pads, gloves, spikes plus all the other apparel and training gear. I guess the sponsorship deals are more about overall exposure for the brand not just to sell bats!?
Title: Re: Bairstow leaves Adidas
Post by: Seniorplayer on November 04, 2017, 04:14:42 PM
That's why it's left to the like of Adidas/NB to stump cash up. To them 100k is just a drop in the overall marketing budget, the number of bats sold is of very little importance to them.

To put it in perspective, a £250 bat to the trade is pretty much top end - would like to see any company sell 400 'LE' bats a year, let alone 400 just to cover the sponsorship of one player!
With willow availability selling
400 LE bats per year  has been easily  achivable.

Yeah that's my point, cricket is of such little significance to NB/Adidas/Puma in the grand scale of things.

When you're spend X million per year on TV adverts, 100k to sponsor one of England's leading players for the year doesn't sound quite as bad...

£100k would need to sell 400 bats at an avg of £250 per bat

£250 profit per bat, you mean?

How many top end bats from the current years range do you actually see being used?

Outside of the forum I don't think I know of anyone who's spend £400+ on a bat! The majority of players I know will buy a bat for whatever their budget is then use that bat until it's broken.

The volume may be achievable, but how many people actually buy a top end bat now the prices are so high?

Think about it worldwide sales by the industries   top manufacturing  guys  sales of 400 LE bats per year not excessive.

For the big players like GM, GN etc I agree, but I can honestly say I've seen 2 Adidas bats being used since I've been playing, and I'm fairly sure one was a fake!

Maybe just a west country thing, but M&H clearly don't struggle to shift bats at a fair whack more than £400!

Totally out of all proportion, thing is JB has a book out so he’s not short. Ask Kippax nicely for half a dozen new bats, go on line and buy yourself some kit, but properly mixed like GM batting pads GN gloves and a mix of keeping kit. On a serious note a few of the squad were given written warnings before the tour, JB allegedly being one.

Probably waiting to see where things go with the series. If it's 3-0 why waste spending the extra cash when half the viewing population will likely switch off (I certainly won't be up at 4am again if we go 3 down!).

It wouldn't surprise me that if we win this test that he's then suddenly wearing GN come boxing day mind!

Jonny... hey Eoin you had a Spartan didn’t you.

Eoin... f#*king spartan.... still trying to get my money they owe me through selling all the stickers they sent me on eBay.... problem is too many other sponsored players doing the same so they don’t sell for much.

Cracking post that !

It might be a one-off Ashes sponsorship. Spartan has more or less focussed on sponsoring players in Australia and India (Ranji trophy and U-19 circuit). I don't see them going out of their comfort zone. It would be interesting to see how long will they last though.

I’ve read somewhere that it’s a 3 year deal

Spartan in Ranji?? I dont think there are any players using Spartan in Ranji trophy...its all SG, SS, TON and DSC.

@mo_town Sagar Mishra is one name that comes to mind. I was in India earlier this month and met a few Ranji players in Chepauk stadium. Some of them were using Spartan kit but most were SS, SG and Adidas. A few DSC bats were there as well. At Ranji level sponsorship stops with giving kits for free, no money is involved unless you are the next Tendulkar or Kohli.
