Tomorrow’s IPL auction time.
Few noteable names- Hetmyer, s.curran, Bairstow, Morgan
I’d imagine Hetmyer is about to become a Millionaire overnight. Be interesting to see which way his Windies career goes - I’d think he’ll follow bravo and pollards example
-
Going to be a very interesting auction considering the availability of a lot of stars going off to the world cup half way through the tournament.
A lot of teams also don't have that many spots available as they have retained so many players.
-
Stupid bidding war for Braithwaite
-
Bairstow of to Sunrisers for 220L
-
Bairstow of to Sunrisers for 220L
Hope they have a team nanny for when his dummy comes out again
-
Stupid bidding war for Braithwaite
Surprised given he can’t play spin.
Yuvraj unsurprisingly unsold - he should retire.
Woakes would be a good buy but also unsold
About time Ingram was bought.
-
Oh Dear..! They've put up Tom Curran's face during the bidding for Sam Curran!! D'OH!
-
Curran becomes a millionaire
-
Jaydev Unadkat last years biggest flop once again goes for over $1m. Madness
-
Good to see joe denly sold and Liam livingstone
-
I said it would be an interesting auction and it was definitely more mad than normal.
Lots of money thrown at the non-capped players..... including Varun Chakravarthy, the uncapped mystery spinner going for over 1 million.
Great to see Harry Gurney get a deal although he is only playing for 1 spot at KKR because Lynn, Narine and Russell will always take 3 Overseas spots. Which may mean Denly warms the bench after also being picked up by KKR.
Bairstow to SRH is an interesting one considering he won't be available for a lot of the IPL. Also SRH bought back Saha so Jonny may find himself running round the field still.
Sam Curran should Get plenty of game time at Kings XI which is great.
Also Livingstone could be a canny buy by RR because they know they will be losing Buttler and Stokes for the World Cup.
Lots and lots of players going unsold though.
-
Hyderabad have a lot of high quality international players Captain Kane, Warner, Guptill, Bairstow, Shakib, Rashid Khan and Stanlake. Williamson and Rashid 100% will start. So the rest playing for two slots. Warner is statistically the best batsman Hyderabad’s history
-
Warner is unavailable for the first three weeks, plus they need Bairstow to keep so that fills three of the overseas slots...
-
Saha is the keeper for Hyderabad, they re-signed him.
-
I think a lot will depend on the Warner factor and what he's like when he comes back etc...
Williamson, Rashid Khan and Shakib I expect will be 3 definte picks and Saha will keep.
-
Do you recognise this man. Never seen him before.

-
you know what they say........ new beard, new man...... :( :( :(
-
Anyone know who’s the captain for Hyderabad? Warner was before the 40 grit appeared at Newlands...
-
Use the beard to scuff up the ball??
-
I still can't believe that the Rajasthan Royals have invested in the Reed's School cricket facility.
-
IPL won’t be on skysports in the uk despite signing a deal. Sky have stopped advertising ipl
Will now be on star gold

What’s exactly going on with the tv rights? Rupert Murdoch owns Sky and he owns the parent company of Star India. So what’s the deal with flip flopping the IPL from Sky to Star?

Comcast own Sky nowadays, not Murdoch.

Comcast own Sky nowadays, not Murdoch.
Thanks that makes more sense.
-
IPL has a habit of reuniting players - bairstow opening with Warner
Bairstow still without a bat sponsor but using GN softs. Good to see the drs system introduced to the tournament
-
seems like the pros are going away from the square toe. Warner using a bat like dhoni’s with the excessively round toe.
-
Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja now know that their World Cup ambitions are dying. Warner will be opening.
-
Definitely not rusty is he?!

No. But no matter how will he does he'll always be remembered more for being a bully and a cheat though.
Which is exactly bthe way it should be for someone who's conducted himself like he has.

English media might target Warner but I highly doubt the rest of the world really cares. As Adie mentions above there’s been plenty of ball tamperers over the years and no one really cares. Indian crowds are known to give the Aussies plenty of stick yet there was nothing of the sort for Warner.
-
This is incredible from Russell
-
These Windies boys love Eden Gardens. Russell the best T20 all rounder.
-
The Kohli clone polished it off. Crazy run chase
-
Russel with a mad innings. But gill showed he’s just as dangerous and stopped him getting his fifty.
Daft windies never picked Russell against England?
-
Mumbai selecting a 17 year old from Kashmir, good to see not many get selected from that area
-

Thought the same - they called him back for the PSL and then didn’t select him
Good to see Ingram get a gig - hopefully he gets some runs

Pant on fire. 18 ball half century and some quite ridiculous shots
-
I do like risbah pant!
Cracking one handed six remind me of @Simmy
-
Pant took Bumrah apart. Bumrah seemed to dislocate his shoulder to add further salt to Mumbai's wounds.
-
I've done the kids football this morning and lay on the sofa watching the IPL all day, it's been bonkers! what a mad day of cricket!
Definitely did the right thing yesterday favoring meeting my pal for a few pints than watch the Kohli meltdown.
-
Brilliant Buttler
-
Only way he was gonna get him out.
Disgraceful.
-
Oh dear
-
That's genuinely appalling
-
R Ashwin runs out Buttler backing up Jos is furious and let's Ashwin know it proper game changing moment.
Probably Ashwin should have warned Buttler first.
-
That really is terrible... Buttler clearly would have been in his ground if Ashwin continued in his bowling action.
I'm sure others will comment on how it's part of the game but that really is poor!
-
The MCC have changed the wording of the Mankad rule from “Bowler attempting to run out non-striker before delivery” to “Non-striker leaving their ground early” in a bid to put the “onus on the non-striker to remain in their ground”.
-
41.16 Non-striker leaving his/her ground early
If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out. Whether the attempt is successful or not, the ball shall not count as one in the over.
At first look to me I thought Buttler was in at the time you would have expected Ashwin to release the ball.
-
Dim from Buttler though.
-
One thing we can agree on though is that Curran is not made for the IPL!
-
One thing we can agree on though is that Curran is not made for the IPL!
Curran a mediocre bowler full stop. Exposed when it's not going around corners
-
I'd take him at my club...
Great catch. This IPL isn't half fun in the first week before the fatigue sets in.
-
Mujeeb not bad for a supposedly 17 year old
-
Absolutely disgraceful from Ashwin! That really was desperate measures! Buttler wasn't trying to steal a run, he waited until he walked out the crease and then ran him out! Yes maybe a bit dumb from Buttler but as I said in the other mankadd thread if you look at all the pros, they all watch the batsmen and start walking, no one watches the bowler.
-
The implications for club cricket are there if this becomes the norm, which I think it will.
As the ameteur game becomes a more aggressive sport this is another potential flashpoint to put fuel on the fire.
-
It's the grey area of when he would be expected to deliver the ball that causes the issue. My view was that if he had bowled the ball Buttler would still have been in the crease, the umpire thought otherwise
-

Yes this is the crux of the problem.
-
Just seen it. Imo shouldn't have been given out as I'd have said he was in when he could have expected Ashwin to deliver the ball. If this is gonna be the norm I think the rule needs clarifying, as it's open to interpretation at the minute as to when it can be legally done. By the rules or not, doesn't sit right with me unless someone is obviously stealing yards.
-
Ashwin will regret it later, not impressed at all! He delayed and then ran him out, don't think anyone would be following his footsteps! It's even worse doing this as a captain, anyways he won the game
-
If this is the way things are going, need to not back up way we were all taught, just stand there like a sprinter ready to go
-
Having been warned about my backing up (unjustly I might add). I stood 10 yards wide of the crease at the non stickers end. Would like to see an umpire give that in a league game. Problem solved.
-
Ashwin act was disgraceful, on top of that with a shameful face he went to shake hand with Jos,like it was not a big deal, Jos refused to shake hand with this garbage in the name of human being. In his post match press conference with journalists Ashwin is talking rubbish to cover his shameful act.
-
According to the law you have to stay in until the time when the ball would be released (is ball roughly above shoulder level) so it is a routine Mankad, nothing grey about it. Can’t stand it myself but hey

Looks in to me. When you see it Ashwin had to wait for him to leave the crease, which to me just doesn't seem right. By the time he'd have delivered the ball had he gone on to do so, I believe Butler would have been in.
-

Why is this different from cases where the wicketkeeper whips off the bails, as the batter slightly overbalances and lets his foot drag out for a split second? The batsman is not attempting a run, yet in those cases, the keeper is applauded for quick hands.

Because that's as stumpling, clear cut and not open to debate. If you can't see how that differs from a mankadding, which doesn't even seem like it was done well and is open to debate, then there's no point getting into it as we'll never agree :D I'm not saying it isn't in the laws, just that I don't think it was out going by those laws. The fact it's dividing opinion so much means it needs looking at and clarifying surely?
-
It’s time we see more dismissals like this - that’s the only way batsmen will learn
Just need to get rid of the grey areas
-
The ball is nowhere near the release point. Buttler needs to stay in until he sees the ball at the release point according to the law. This is exactly the type of dismissal the new law encourages and yet when we see it people seem surprised
Nowhere near point of delivery? He jumps into his delivery stride, which is generally when you'd expect him to deliver the ball isn't it? If he'd have competed his action then I don't think Butler would have been out of his ground at the point of release, but obviously was by the time he stopped, turned and took the bails off.

They'd have to be incredibly sensitive stump mics to pick up an exchange near the boundary! ;)
-
:D
I meant after the mankad itself.
But Jos' coach/manager had strong words too after Jos walked on...
-
Should not have been given out if following the rule. At the point of deemed release, he was in.
Not happy with Ashwin's behavior. :(
-
As much as I love a Mankad - in this case I don't think Jos should have been given out under the letter of the law...
-
Played the footage back carefully earlier, Buttler's definitely not in his crease at the time you'd expect Ashwin to have let go of the ball if he'd continued. Amazed Buttler's got done like this again to be honest!
-
In the other thread the majority seemed to think it was fair game in a kids match and now the balance swings the other way
I was one of those who took the view strongly that Mankading is a grubby way to go about playing the game. This is exactly the sort of behaviour that diminishes the game
-
Batter needs to stay in his crease until the ball is bowled. If you don’t watch the ball then it’s your risk. Buttler is known to steal yards so teams should target these players.
Not saying I like it btw, Just it’s a valid dismissal and while sledging, nicking off and not walking etc are deemed acceptable then so should this
-
^ Then why are Shane Warne, Morgan, Roy, and others making noise about this?
-
I was going to say that it was impossible for an umpire to determine if Butler was out of his ground at the "normal point of release", and how could the average club umpire ever hope to get that right?
But looking up the laws of cricket I'm still a little unclear.
From the MCC laws of cricket effective Oct 2017 :-
41.16 Non-striker leaving his/her ground early.
If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out. Whether the attempt is successful or not, the ball shall not count as one in the over.
If the bowler fails in an attempt to run out the non-striker, the umpire shall call and signal Dead ball as soon as possible.
So based on that, Ashwin did not attempt the run out in between the ball coming into play and expected release of the ball. The wicket was broken much after 'expected release', so according to that, it should have been not out, and given a dead ball.
Unless I've downloaded the wrong rules of cricket?
Edit - would appear I've been reading it wrong, as the rule does not state that the run out attempt must be made between ball in play and expected release. I thought the rule was meant to weed out mankads after the point of release, but the wording of the rule does not do this.
Adding a comma makes a huge difference.
If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out.
If the non-striker is out of his/her ground, from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out.
-
Dozy from Jos, watch the bowler to make sure he's released the ball before you leave the crease. This is literally schoolboy stuff.
Mankads continue to be the best.
-
It’s time we see more dismissals like this - that’s the only way batsmen will learn
Just need to get rid of the grey areas
Is Jos the only batsman to be mankad twice ?
The first time (2014 vs SL) I believe he was warned twice before being mankad - so maybe he’s had a reputation on the international circuit as a mankad candidate.

It's pretty clear that Ashwin had no intention of bowling the ball and letting Buttler just walk out of the crease, poor sportsmanship, and it speaks volumes about Ashwin as an individual. Regardless of the rules, if you choose to conduct yourself like that on the field then don't be surprised when your reputation and legacy are justifiably questioned and subsequently diminished.

That picture clearly shows that Ashwin is a cheat. He clearly looks about to release the ball and Buttler still behind the line. What next? Will it be ok if the bowler continues his action, but release it so that it goes backwards into the stumps behind! Would that be fair?
-
Its disgusting. He had no intention of bowling that ball
How anyone can read and interpret the rules and still think that is acceptable, then your probably a massive bell end as well. That's just not cricket, end of. He has deceived Buttler, I dont see it being to dissimilar to fake fielding, which is now 5 penalty runs. He has pretended to bowl the ball, to gain an unfair advantage and trick a batsmen. As everyone with a brain has said, Buttler was in his crease a long time and would have been upon normal ball release. To make it even worse hes come out and tried to claim it was never planned. Bore off Ashwin, you are a cheat, you have history of this kind of thing, and what an example set as captain to the rest of your side and millions watching. BCCI wont act on it, hes one of their golden boys. Whole thing stinks
-
FWIW, I don't see that Buttler was trying to steal a yard on this occasion, at the (expected) point of delivery he was clearly within his ground. This is in contrast with his 2014 Mankad against SL when it looked very much as if he was - and had been warned before. I agree with @DorsetDan that the law change does appear to encourage players to do this (and this incident will no doubt spawn countless imitators) which is absolute madness. Outside the international arena, with the benefit of the 3rd umpire, it's unenforceable. No umpire could possibly call a dismissal like this as they're focused on the batsmen once they've stopped looking at the front line for a no ball, he'd need eyes in the back of his head, so we're likely to see ugly scenes up and down the country as bowlers try it on, (marginally) within the law.

Regarding actual incident, I was favouring ashwin as if its in rules and umpire gave it out means it wasnt wrong doing. BUT after watching actual clip today I say Ashwin was wrong. Butler wasnt going anywhere. He Advanced as he was expecting a ball bowled and watching the ball. Ashwin stopped and ran him out and Butler didnt see ball bowled and looked back then realised what happened.
-
^ Then why are Shane Warne, Morgan, Roy, and others making noise about this?
When is Shane Warne NOT making noise?
Anyway, next time I'm stumped because my foot slid outside the crease by half an inch I'm going to kick up a huge fuss about the spirit of cricket. Just like if I ever bowl a no ball I'm going to get mopey as all hell because I'm obviously not intending to gain any advantage, its just an accident and why should I be punished?
Obviously I'm kidding because I've never been stumped on a marginal call, nor have I ever bowled a single front foot no-ball because there is a ruddy great white line painted on the ground and I make sure I stay behind it.
-
I do like risbah pant!
Cracking one handed six remind me of @Simmy
hahah hopefully that's a thing of the past now
-
When is Shane Warne NOT making noise?
Morgan, Roy, and others are up in arms too.
I think (I am speculating here) there are few things going on which have some of the players riled up:
1. If Virat Kohli is mankadded, the level of noise would be far higher than it is now which is my Shane Warne is unhappy.
2. Upcoming WC 2019 could see another repeat of this ugly drama where Ashwin would use this trick and others won't. More ugliness.
3. Mankad is extremely hard to call in a club/league game and considering dwindling support for Cricket outside India, there is another negative for young people considering the sport.
Ben Stokes tweeted that he will "never ever ever'' mankad Virat Kohli in the WC final. That says something.
-
If the bowler goes through the action and holds on to the ball past where they would have released it then they aren't entitled to run out the non-striker. Any time before that release point, with the ball in play, they are entitled to run out the non-striker. All these pictures of where the front foot is or whatever are nonsense, the only question is was the bowler past the point of release in their action when the attempt the run out.
In this instance, Jos Butler was not stealing the yard, he was moving with the bowler. Ashwin tricked him.
-
Ashwin is a fan of mankading - he did it back in 2012 but the captain at the time withdrew it
-
DC vs CSK on right now and very interesting commentary on BBC Sport 5 Live.
Basically the commentators were saying that Harbhajan could have done the Mankad all throughout his 1st 2 overs if he wanted to as Iyer and Dhawan weren't in at the point of release.
-

He's just stopped but not taken the bails off - surely that's the warning
-
Maybe this issue should be managed in a different way. When a bowler oversteps the crease, the umpire calls it as a no-ball. How about, if the non-striker 'over-steps', the umpire calls in a similar way, and any runs scored by the striker are voided. This would force the non-striker to stay within his ground for fear of significant negative effect to his team, and thus the Mankad would no longer be an option for the bowling side.
-
Isnæt it just easiest to say, if you leave your ground before the ball is released you are at risk of being run out.
Nice and easy for all to understand, and the only likely end product is batsmen have to run a bit further. or is there something there I'm missing?
-
What's next though - keepers waiting 5/10 seconds until a batter lifts his foot to stump him? Be interesting to see if this happens again in the IPL now.
-
I like the idea but it would be hugely disruptive to a bowler unless there is a bigger penalty for over stepping.
I was thinking about this and as a batsman, on strike, I'd find it "disruptive" if the bowler was looking to constantly trick the non-striker into a mankad.
Mankad disrupts the flow of a game. Which is another reason there is a furore over Butler's dismissal: on-strike batsman now has to contend with a possibility (and always on the alert that) bowler could pull a mankad on the non-striker.
Yes, it is legal but not good for business.
-
So what? Jos was lazy,
He was not. Look at the picture I posted earlier, he was moving with the bowler and expected him to deliver . He was in sync with the bowler but Ashwin tricked him.
-

Mankadding aside, Delhi laboured to 147 off their 20 overs at the Kotla. Wicket is a bit indifferent. Delhi seem to place too much reliance on Pant. Almost expecting him to go nuts every innings.
Ishant bowling with proper wheels. Really improved has the big tree.
-
I like the idea but it would be hugely disruptive to a bowler unless there is a bigger penalty for over stepping. You'd then have people "accidentally" overstepping to ruin the bowlers rhythm and it is yet another thing for a poor umpire to have to have an eye on
I think it would have to be monitored by a Hawkeye type machine, and '3rd umpired' - called after the completion of the delivery and shot. Then there would be no benefit to tactical overstepping, only costs. Therefore it really only works for the professional game I suppose.

Two inches outside on these deliveries, Jos was clearly stealing the match. Horror!
I think this sums it up best: The MCC has also emphasised that the non-striker has to stay in the crease until the ball is released. I think this sums it up best: The MCC has also emphasised that the non-striker has to stay in the crease until the ball is released. Somebody forgot to send this memo to Morgan, Stokes, and others as they clearly don't want to partake in this ugly practice.
There is also an argument about the disruption to the flow of the game. Reason people invoke the "spirit" because the law is hard to enforce or doesn't fully do justice to the flow of the game.
You know, somebody gets mankaded in the WC 2019 final and we will hear a different kind of howling.

Dhoni earning some sponsorship money here. Switches from his TON to BAS mid innings
-
Dhoni switching from SS to BAS bats halfway through his innings, never seen someone use two different brands in the same innings double sponsorship money 💰
-
I think the best way for the laws to deal with this is for the umpire to call a short run if the batsman leaves his crease before the ball is released. That way, batsman don't benefit from leaving the crease early and we don't see the unpleasant sight of a bowler trying to deceive the non striker into thinking the ball has been released.

That switch of bat must’ve earned dhoni 20k. 10 min sponsorship slot for the bat maker at prime time

The ball is clearly still in the bowlers hand and he is clearly out of his ground. Or are you suggesting that somehow in all the photos the ball not being released is an optical illusion?
Or in what other order do you think evens might have happened with a frame by frame?
-
Morgan, Roy, and others are up in arms too.
1) Mankads (and the ensuing clutching of pearls) are always hilarious
2) If Kohli is dismissed via Mankad when he's on 99 in the World Cup final against Pakistan it will be objectively the funniest thing to ever happen throughout all of time and space. If Mohammed Amir is the one to Mankad him then it would so impossibly funny that the universe might just implode from the hilarity.
3) Forgive me for not giving a single damn about Ben Stokes weighing in as a moral arbiter on anything
4) I would put the number of young children that have ever thought "I like the look of this cricket malarkey but this Mankad thing is giving me second thoughts" at being ooooh...about zero
5) Did I mention that Mankads are hilarious? I mean my man here has literally done the "Won't someone think of the children?" thing. That's just brilliant.

Human eye doesn't see events x frames/sec like a camera does. So huge deal if snap shots show Butler outside the crease. When we don't see the full range of motion, we can't ascertain Butler's intent to steal a yard (or not). From all the pictures so far, he is not stealing a yard.
I have stood on non-striker end too and I do move with the bowler. Maybe I move out of the crease after the "release" maybe before. I can't tell but I know that my intention is NOT to move out before the release. Can my human eyes (not a camera with x frame/sec shutter speed) do it accurately everytime? I don't know.
Butler was setup deliberately. Now video teams all over are looking at how each batsman moves at non-striker end to get them mankaded. Lame!

Batsmen will just have to learn not to leave the crease to early then, in accordance with the laws.
Buttler has always had an issue with leaving the crease too early, why should he be allowed that advantage over others?

Human umpires can't call it clearly if too close. Not enforceable at club level.

Question you should ask is why did Shreyas Iyer get a warning from Herbajan Singh today and Jos Butler didn't get one yesterday.

No, not close ones. Which is why at the international level, they use reviews and slow-mo cameras. Club level umpiring is horrible to begin with.
You and mankad crew are defending the indefensible.
Harbajan is smart, he brought back the un-written "warning" rule into effect. Had he proceeded with cheap trick like yesterday, mankading would've become another "strategy" (or plan) for teams to explore.
Lame!

So can all batsmen expect warnings before being stumped if they play and miss and their front foot drags forward a bit?
They're gaining far less of an advantage than a batsman who backs up 6 inches too far after all, they have no intention at all of setting off for a run while a Mankad victim leaves his crease in order to be ready to run.

With Kulli on this to an extent, no one player should be afforded an advantage - whilst it may be an unusual form of dismissal, it is within the laws of the game and thus perfectly legitimate. I was always told when young to drag my bat behind me leaving it in the crease until the bowler had let go the ball, you've still gained a yard and a bit but done it without giving the bowler the opportunity to have you cheaply.
That said, I can imagine the furore if something like this got Kohli or Smith et al out cheaply in a World Cup final - effectively robbing the audience of a star in a huge game?!?!

I don't have an issue with Mankading at all, but there needs to be room for context in the law, there was no advantage for buttler in this case, Ashwin clearly didn't intend on bowling the delivery and therefore the whole act was entirely dishonest and completely against the spirit of the game.

Why if there was an attempted run out at the leper’s end and Buttler made it by a cm? Would he not then be rewarded for stealing 3-4cm? Or would he see the replay and walk?

Buttler didn't steal anything? He was in his ground when Ashwin was reasonably expected to bowl the ball.
-
Haven’t you seen the 10+ photos from the same game of him out of his ground while the bowler still has the ball in his hand?
-
I have not, all I've seen is the footage of Ashwin pretending to bowl a ball so that buttler would start backing up.
At the end of the day there are two ways you can go about winning, personally it's not the way I would have gone about it.

The commentators are usually quick to say "good running, turning 1s into 2s". Think it's about time they also changed slightly and said he's stealing a few cm to turn that 1 into 2

Theres also screenshots on Twitter from the same game showing other batsmen on both sides doing the same. Not saying it's right but if Kings Xl were cruising to a win would Ashwin have done it? In the rules or not I'm not a fan. Much like the Elliott/Collingwood incident years ago, was in the rules but I didn't agree with Collingwoods decision.
Would be interesting to see an overlay of Ashwins full action over the top of the one where he mankadded to see where Butler was when he would have released the ball normally.

Yup, I'm sure Buttler isn't the only one with this issue. ideally I'd like to see batsmen made to back up properly instead of a heap of Mankads, the short format game is alredy hugely weighted against bowlers as it is.

You teach kids at school to start to walk as the bowler bowls. It's always been considered good practice to teach this, but now they are saying it's cheating! This is a rubbish rule! Walking as the bowler bowls is fine... you don’t have to leave your crease though.. leaving your crease is stealing years. It’s really simple to stay in your crease until you know the ball has been released.

MCC have now declared this particular incident against the Spirit of Cricket
Bravo MCC! Finally you grew a spine and told the truth.
“We believe the pause was too long between the time Ashwin reached the crease and the moment it was reasonable to expect the ball would be delivered,” Stewart explained, referring to Ashwin’s pause in the crease - before pulling out of his delivery and running out Buttler who was backing up. “When Buttler could have reasonably expected the ball to be delivered, he was in his ground.”
-
And more from MCC:
“We didn’t come down either way (in the original statement),” Stewart went on, rejecting the accusation that MCC had changed course. “We now think at the key moment Buttler was in his ground.”
Critics might argue that the ground has shifted. MCC’s original statement was on the lines of “caveat emptor” - that the non-striker had to take full responsibility for not backing up too far.
Now the most telling argument seems to be: what would happen if every bowler did the same as Ashwin? Come to a standstill, would be the answer, and create intense animosity.
MCC have been reading my posts. :D

The only correct outcome I would suggest. There is nothing within the spirit of the game with a bowler intentionally holding back his action for purpose of coning the batsman into leaving his ground when the bowler never had any intention of delivering the ball.
As I have said previously, simply calling a short run if the batsman leaves his crease early would remove the incentive for a bowler to behave as Ashwin said whilst ensuring the batsman gains no advantage.
-
Not really. I was taught to walk with the bowler, watch the bowler and try to leave the crease just as the bowler releases the ball. Nothing has changed. It's just that it is normal now to slide out of the crease watching the batter facing the delivery rather than pay attention to staying in until the ball is released. I don't think you'd teach kids to just casually slide out watching the striking batter so it is more a case of non-strikers being a bit lazy
That is not what I've tried to explain and, as a PE teacher, you teach pupils to walk as the bowler bowls. If they aren't backing up you'd explain that they should be out past the line once the batsman is striking the ball and ready to run. There is a clear difference in this to someone a few metres down the pitch before the bowler has actually bowled. This is also completely different to a bowler pretending to deliver a ball, only to stop mid action in order to catch the non striker out and take his wicket by underhand tactics. This is not laziness by the non striker, it quiet simply cheating by the bowler. I can't believe anyone can see this as a forward step for cricket!
-
Ok, but then what is the designated distance you can be out of your crease by before it’s unacceptable?
If being a few meters down is cheating, but being a few cm’s out isn’t, then surely there has to be a set distance that being whitin is ok, otherwise the rule unenforcable.
-

This is a healthy debate, but here are a few things I have an issue with (in terms of the language being used in this debate):
1. "Its not like the batsman is stealing meters"... this is a game of millimeters ! Even 1mm of advantage, is enough - its the difference between out, and not out
2. Can we please stop saying "stealing" with such a negative connotation? A batsman backing up is NOT a cheat. He is simply trying to get a good start to make his crease at the other end... "stealing" runs is the objective of the game !!! If he gets run out in the process of trying to "steal" a run, then thats fair play to the fielding side. Batsmen are supposed to "steal" runs, and fielders are supposed to stop them. There is no moral compass at play here.

'Mankad' dismissal not 'in the spirit of the game' - MCC
Lawmakers the MCC say the "Mankading" dismissal of Jos Buttler in the IPL went against the spirit of cricket.
Non-striking batsmen backing up can be run-out without warning by bowlers - as Buttler was by spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in Jaipur on Monday.
The MCC said on Tuesday that the law was "essential" and added "without it, non-strikers could back up at liberty".
But manager of the Laws Fraser Stewart clarified on Wednesday: "We don't think it was in the spirit of the game."
The dismissal is known as a 'Mankad' after India bowler Vinoo Mankad ran out Australia batsman Bill Brown in 1947.
Law 41.16 states: "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out".
Replays showed Buttler, who was ousted in similar fashion by Sri Lanka's Sachithra Senanayake in an England one-day international in 2014, was in his ground when Ashwin's foot landed at the crease but then left it before the Kings XI Punjab bowler removed the bails.
Stewart commented: "Having extensively reviewed the incident again and after further reflection, we believe the pause was too long between the time Ashwin reached the crease and the moment it was reasonable to expect the ball would be delivered.
"When Buttler could have reasonably expected the ball to be delivered, he was in his ground.
"It is also unfair, and against the Spirit of Cricket, for non-strikers to leave their ground too early. All these debates wouldn't be necessary if non-strikers remained in their ground until the ball is on its way down the pitch."
-
MCC proving correct my rule of thumb of ignoring people that invoke the spirit of cricket (or that mysterious 'line' that may or may not have been crossed) because they're normally wrong.

We believe the pause was too long between the time Ashwin reached the crease and the moment it was reasonable to expect the ball would be delivered, Stewart explained, referring to Ashwins pause in the crease - before pulling out of his delivery and running out Buttler who was backing up. When Buttler could have reasonably expected the ball to be delivered, he was in his ground.

But manager of the Laws Fraser Stewart clarified on Wednesday: "We don't think it was in the spirit of the game.
we believe the pause was too long between the time Ashwin reached the crease and the moment it was reasonable to expect the ball would be delivered.
But the way the law is worded, it says that there is nothing wrong with this. If they don't think it's in the spirit of the game, then change the law (again!) to something that reflects the spirit you require.
If the MCC worded the law differently they could specify that the runout must be attempted before the expected point of release. Thus, waiting for a batsman to leave the crease as Ashwin did, would result in a dead ball.
I hope the MCC are having a good hard look at this, and come up with something better, because until they do, they can expect to see more of it.
As I have said previously, simply calling a short run if the batsman leaves his crease early would remove the incentive for a bowler to behave as Ashwin said whilst ensuring the batsman gains no advantage.
That would be dumping the batsman's responsibility onto the umpire. If the batsman stays in his crease, that also removes the bowler's incentive to Mankad.

Kohli post match interview disappointed with his bowlers.
-
Still couldn’t get into the windies side
According to the Windies press release, Russell suffered from an allergic reaction to an injection in his knee. Supposedly severe swelling so they couldn’t play him
-
Russell going pretty decent after 4 matches. 207 runs, 103.5 average, 268 strike rate and 22 sixes. 5 wickets as well
-
You could argue that the kings 11 didn’t actually go for that chase - some bizarre cricket
-
Alzarri Joseph takes 6-12 on IPL debut as he shreds Hyderabad. These are the best figures in IPL history
-
The picture on the right... if kids are taught to back up like that , mankad will never be an issue again.

Thanks mate

KKR all but blown away by spin in the first 10 overs
Dre Rus has 10 overs to bat and rescue his team again
-
Curran getting an absolute beating by Pollard!!
-
It Curran’s finest hour. He’s bowled well last few games but went some then.
That’s the pollard I remember from the t and t days of the old world t20 club tournament thing.
Outdid Rahul ton. I do like to watch Rahul bat.
-
Rahul might’ve scored a century but it was the fourth slowest in IPL history. If you face over 60 balls you should be scoring way more than an even 100
-

What?
So you should be scoring at a minimum strike rate of 160 otherwise a century off 60 balls is seen as a poor effort.
Jesus Christ some absolute horseshit written on here.

100 off 64 balls so the strike rate was 156.
He scored 60 in boundaries from 12 deliveries. So the remaining 52 balls he scored 40 runs. That’s substandard

Absolute nonsense as usual. Put the pipe down

If you subtract the boundaries off any batsmen's score/innings im pretty sure they will all look "substandard".
-
Indeed. For example, Andree Russel currently has 257 from 121 balls at 212 sr.
But, if you subtract the boundaries (17 x 4, 25 x 6) he's only hit 39 runs from 79 balls, or .49 SR. Is he substandard too?
-

Couldn’t agree more. substandard stats. In fact, if you exclude the number of runs he’s scored using his bat, the stats are even more abysmal.
-
Shocking from Raina that.
Called through for a one by du plesiss and he literally just jogged while watching it go to archer, and then panicked when he realised he was actually Gonna throw down the stumps.
-
Some catch that stokesy
-
Dhoni switches from a SS to a Bas mid innings
Another fat pay cheque
-
Not sure you can get a more mental last over.
-
Well. A six. A no ball, a wicket, a rescinded no ball, dhoni storming the pitch. A wide, and then a massive bomb of last ball to win.
Stokes should Not ball the last over in t20s.....
-
Ben chokes
Shockingly poor last over, CSK probably deserve that after that high full toss wasn’t called.
No replay of the first front foot no ball either - odd that
-
When are they going to realise that Stokes isn't a death bowler!
-
RR’s other options was the other million dollar man unadkat - who’s arguably worse
Stokes looked like he was carrying a knee injury - massive risk to carry on bowling with the WC around the corner.
-
Rajasthan are handicapping themselves by insisting on having Rahane as captain and going further by insisting on having him in the playing XI.
Due to Rahane’s inclusion, Rajasthan are playing batsmen out of position. Tripathi is an opener yet finds himself at 5. Smith’s best position is 3. Stokes is also better coming in early not down in the lower middle order.
Maybe they should’ve made Samson captain as they didn’t want to pick Buttler or Smith as captain as they’ll be leaving mid season

Of the 64 balls that Rahul faced, 17 where dot balls which is about 25.5%. Had he scored of a few of those Punjab would’ve crossed 210.
-
Just read the report on this... wow. Hope Dhoni gets a lengthy ban for that, unacceptable behaviour.

A slap on the wrist at best. Umpires were too scared to say anything to him or hush him off the field. They also told him nothing when he was wasting time in between balls when he was batting
-

I really hope not, we're already well on the road for the football-isation of cricket. If this happens at professional level without being dealt with, amateur cricket with no neutral umpires is in serious trouble.
-
Dhoni fined 50% of his match fee. Bet he’s gutted.

This is so true. It seems like every resource apart from Jos is utilised poorly at RR. Why do they open with Rahane and have Tripathi (who had a successful spell as an opener 2 IPLs ago) at 4/5? It’s a double whammy for them. They start so slowly and have nobody who can tee off at the end. Stokes isn’t being used correctly either as we see him ending as a death bowler last night to ill effect. Having smith and Rahane in the same team is counter intuitive in a T20 format too. Really annoys me
-
IPL is all about getting the big names in. Strategy is very much secondary to that
It's all to do with money,
why would anyone turn up to watch an unknown indian player over steve smith, jos buttler, ben stokes etc?
dont forget Rahane is a star in india thats who the fans will want to see!
-
and as long and dhoni wins everyone is happy!
-
Absolutely. Like it or loathe it, the IPL knows how to put on a show. Big names "failing" is all part of the drama.
Now I'm not saying the IPL is completely fixed or anything *cough* but how many games don't make it to the final over with both teams in with a chance? Very, very few compared to other T20 competitions I'd wager. Isn't it funny how often a chasing team is struggling and then the captain brings on a very hittable bowler and suddenly it's game on again;) All part of putting on a show and the IPL is the world leader in that respect
I see IPL as entertainment - like the WWE. Scripted drama always taken with a pinch of salt.
As for dhoni - got his slap on the wrist which the owner will happily pay his fine. Would be counterproductive for the IPL to ban him.
Over rates seem to have gone out the window this year but the BCCI won't mind. Increases their ad revenue
-
Could argue today’s game was decided at the toss with kkr dropping 3 players. They didn’t look like winning it any stage
-

Narine and Lynn out due to illness
-
Stokes not playing due to injury.
Means that Livingstone gets a game which should be interesting to see how he gets on.
-
Butler putting on a show... and he gets out as im typing fml
-
Kohli drops Gayle on 84 Gayle finishes on 99 not Out.
-
Kohli drops Gayle on 84 Gayle finishes on 99 not Out.
Very interesting innings from Gayle, didn't even try and hit the spinners (Chalal and Ali) and then just went berserk against the seamers and still got 99 not out!
-
When watching that innings you cant help but think they are around 20 odd under par.
-
KKR really missing a trick by having young Gill batting below the likes of Narine and Rana

Moeen Ali out gunning ab de villiers here.
-
Poor cricket.
Abv 6
Ashkeep sold de villiers down the river. Should have sacrificed himself.
Then gets out
Dot
Another wicket.
-
Mumbai are going to do this pretty easily
-
KP and Swann having to share a comm. box together.
Can’t imagine them two wilfully agreeing to commentate on the same game, then again money talks
-
Not sure what Krunal Pandya is up to. 11 off 21 is shocking
-
Kohli anger throw at the end was delightful.
-
Probably feels his bowlers let him down again.
-
Probably feels his bowlers let him down again.
You would’ve thought he would’ve learnt to buy some bowlers at the auction. Same issue year after year
-
KL Rahul 9 off 20 atm. He does know this is a t20 right?
-
Whys buttler not stumping?
-
Whys buttler not stumping?
Hes probably a better fielder out on the boundary than Samson is.
-
Pooran been pretty impressive with the gloves for Punjab. Back in the u19 days he was a full time keeper. Kept like a seasoned veteran to both Ashwins
-
The old warhorse Dale Steyn makes his IPL return with RCB and fellow South African Heinrich Klaasen also makes RCB debut.
-
The old warhorse Dale Steyn makes his IPL return with RCB and fellow South African Heinrich Klaasen also makes RCB debut.
That's a surprise as he was unsold guess RCB need bowlers
-
Moeen smashing it.
Out performing kohli here
-
And he’s out next ball..... forum curse
-
Kohli to a ton...... off a misfield second to last ball.
Poor fielding that.
-
The fielding has been shocking
-
That's a surprise as he was unsold guess RCB need bowlers
RCB pretty clueless within the auction tbh. They stock up on batsmen or batting all rounders every season. No idea why Southee doesn't play when he was with CSK he was quality
-
Every single year, spend 90% of the budget on batsmen and the rest on bowlers
-
Lynn looked like a bunny in a car headlights against steyn then.
They keep banging on that lynn prefers pace, but he just didn’t move his feet and just pushed so far away from his body.
Imagine that’s what I’d be like at a decent level......
Gill didn’t convert his chance up the rider after everyone been crying for it. Bit gutted as love to see him bat.
-
One of those ipl non chases. This pair have ensured that not even Russell can win this
-
this is such a poor effort at chasing you cant help but think its fixed. RU basically kiled the game with his innings
-
Russell is worth every penny. Absolutely box office.
Quit this nonsense about fixed matches. Karthik was asked in the press conference why he kept selecting Uthappa despite his crap form. And Karthik essentially got irked and indicted he’ll keep picking his mates.
Well he keeps picking his buddies and they keep losing. Dreadful captaincy
-
Steve Smith to captain RR for the rest of the tournament.
-
Buttler flown home for birth of his baby and with England squad due to meet up next weekend that's his IPL done I would have thought.
-
Samson seems to have nicked one of butlers bats before he flew back
-
Stokes' lacklustre IPL continues. Last two seasons he's not justifying that massive price tag
-
I think gayle storm is brewing. He's stricking @ around 200 and it doesn't even look like hes trying to tee off yet
-

forum curse strikes. Out as i posted
-
Warner continuing his love affair with the IPL, once again passing 500 runs in a season. 517 runs at 73, 1 x 100 and 6 x 50 in 9 innings. Strong case to be made that he's the best batsman in IPL history
-
When you're that good, people will forgive anything.
-
Poor decision to send in moeen so late
-
On form moeen and send in stoinis. Madness
-
Steyn remover
-
Not sure kohlis captained well this ipl.
Moeen bowled twice in a row at economy under 5...... and in game 3 kohli bowled him 1 over. The last over.
Moeen on form with the bat? Let’s just drop him Down the order and let stoinis and akshdeep waste some balls.
Baffling. In fact if it wasn’t kohli, anyone else would have been replaced by now, like rahana was.
-
Prior to Steyn’s arrival, RCB had take 3 wickets in the power play in 8 matches. Since they’ve added the fire and brimstone of Steyn we’ve taken 6 in the last two power plays
-
i dont think even Dhoni can rescue this chase. Partly because he hasn't looked fit enough to play a long innings in any game hes been asked to., at least not by his standards
-
What a game of cricket
-
Inches in this game - dhoni nearly did it. Another epic IPL game - kohli was about to lose it had they lost
Another mid innings bat brand swap for dhoni
-
i dont think even Dhoni can rescue this chase. Partly because he hasn't looked fit enough to play a long innings in any game hes been asked to., at least not by his standards
Does this still stand up?? Lol.
He was so close to rescuing it!! So close. Good game.
-
Think MSD was brilliant today, Bravo should have better back upped, he might have been more inticipating on 4 or 6 than of possible very quick single, should have been a tie, at least
-
Does this still stand up?? Lol.
He was so close to rescuing it!! So close. Good game.
Well he had fitness issues the last 2 games he was asked to play a long innings. He was great today but you cant help but wonder whether his approach to the penultimate over is what cost CSK in the end
-
Don't think Bravo would've been able to hit 6s with his fitness, MSD did right, no blame on him as far I'm concerned
-
Wonder how far down the wicket the non striker would’ve been had Mankading not happened this ipl. He would’ve made that run had he backed up more.
Thought I’d throw that one out there
-
Turner having the worst possible start to his ipl career - 3 ducks in a row
Rahane with a 100 now he’s not captain
-
Funny to think Pant and his incredible hitting ability isn't good for India's World Cup squad
-
Funny to think Pant and his incredible hitting ability isn't good for India's World Cup squad
He has not been in best of form this IPL. When he had chances to finish games, he throw away his wicket many times. Scored a 50 in the first match and now. It was a good choice that he was selected for the WC.
-
Funny to think Pant and his incredible hitting ability isn't good for India's World Cup squad
Not consistent though is he
-
It’s worth noting that Pant has a lot of success in previous IPLs opening. But Delhi loaded up Dhawan, Shaw and Iyer means he has to bat in the middle order. I’m pretty sure he’s got an IPL hundred already.
-
Yes 128* last year, something like 60 balls.
-
David Warner passes 50 for the fifth consecutive innings, and eighth time in 10 innings. Seems to be in decent form...
-

de Villiers finds somewhere near his best with a 6 hitting blitzkrieg
-
RCB hammer 48 off the last 2 overs, Stoinis finally hitting his straps. 203 for Punjab to hunt down
-
Is this only available on bt sport?
Yes, thank goodness!!
-
Miller’s extremely over rated. Cost his side this game by batting so slow.
24 off 25 chasing 203 isn’t good enough
-
Would be rather incredible if RCB somehow made the playoffs despite being 0-6 at one stage
-
Yes, thank goodness!!
No it is on STAR GOLD on Sky channel 729
-
Seems like plenty of players are being selected on the basis of their price tags rather than their form
Chris Lynn has one pretty poor all season
Ben Stokes poor and currently can’t bowl
Unadkat been crap for the last two seasons
All three million dollar men and their sides are too scared to drop them
-
That said Rajasthan have a fiery attack today Oshane Thomas, Varun Aaron clocked at 150kph and obviously Jofra.
-

Its the IPL, their business is generating action for their bookmaking partners, cricket is just the sideshow, who wins doesn't really matter to anyone.
If Stokes brings in more action at the bookies, then Stokes gets picked. The bottom line is the bottom line.
-
Unadkat is literally the most pathetic 'bowler' I've ever seen. Continually bowling slower balls and getting destroyed. Which ever imbecile signed unadkat twice for over $1m should be sacked
-
Narine running through them - doesn’t want to play for his country though.
-
well if Stokes is going to find some form now would be the time.......
-
Jofra wins it for Rajasthan with some brilliant hitting
-
Jofra wins it for Rajasthan with some brilliant hitting
Yep Archer showing he can bat a bit as well!
-
1.8m for stokes to score 120 runs in 9 games - if his poor form carries on into the WC surely he can’t keep getting selected
Great knock by the young kid, looks a talent
-
Ashton Turner ended his run of 5 consecutive T20 ducks by finally scoring a run Rajasthan
-
KKR finally flex their muscles piling up a season high 232-2. Gill 76 off 45, Lynn 54 off 29 and Dre Russ 80 off 40(just the 8 sixes).
Hardik played a staggering innings of 91 off 34(9 sixes) but Mumbai outgunned
-
Super over! Another final over finish for the ipl
-
YOU COULDN'T MAKE IT UP...
-
Imo, srh gave away the game after they got into super super over, Kane Williamson should have been other opener, actually the lost super over after 1 ball, what a bad run out, tbh, knowing that all of this goes in split seconds,
If KW was there he wouldn't be going for the 2nd, that's in sure of
-
Felt very bad for Yuvraj Singh during the whole IPL '19 season. Let's see who Team India is going to perform in WC? I have got some list of sites for Cricket World Cup 2019 Live Streaming (https://www.worldcupupdates.org/icc-cricket-world-cup-2019-free-live-streaming-online-websites-live-tv-channels-broadcast-list/) so that people like us can watch from work ground.

Has the IPL finished now?! 😲
-
Yes 2019 winners mumbi. Indians
