Tom - I'm afraid you cant pull that old trick, we dont expect you to name names but i for one would be massively suprised if Mongoose did not unveil an additional world class batsmen to their rostrum :D

YOUTUBE is not banned at work - result!

I think Shewag or Warner might be the highest run scorers..

Would be nice if Punjab wins dont see it happening though too many injuries for them.. Irfan and Lee both might not be a 100%

IPL is just fun slap dash, it is made for the 21st century viewer who does not have the time/interest to stick at more than 2 hours for a match. It will be as big as ever in India and cricket circles but anyone going to go to India to watch it? It is a bubble and it will burst. It like having nothing but Chocolate to eat, great in theory but makes you sick in reality.

How many MMI's are going to be on show Tom? existing players that is and who do you expect to top score from your players?

I'm going for Bangalore purely as tried to talk one of their players into a season of cricket in Somerset, he was interested until he realised it was "IN" Somerset rather than "FOR" Somerset..... Top scorer Cameron White.

Mike you know nothing. The flash in the pan IPL is worth $4b, as quoted by an English financier . Seems to be going from strength to strength, if you ask me.

Back on topic, Dehli will win, Sehwag top scorer and Vettori or Nannes to be leading wicket takers.

I am with Jeet on this. Delhi look very competitive. Need to hold their nerves in the big games though. Top scorer - Sehwag or Dilshan

I'm sure the value of it is worth a lot, India is quite a big place! Does the money make the cricket better then? It's meaningless though, what player cares for anything apart from the money?

Surely poor performance would affect a player's future earning capacity though???

Agreed, but money is the cause, at least for county and country they will want to win badly for the win itself. World Series been and gone and now IPL.

Only Dwayne Smith going so far. So a definite 1 if he uses it. He used it a couple of times whilst playing in Australia, but didn't have huge success with them. I had hoped we'd have at least a couple of players on this shortlist too http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/content/records/283855.html

Winner: Delhi Daredevils
Highest runscorer for me: Sachin Tendulkar

From Guardian Online today:

Cricket is to return to ITV for the first time in more than 30 years after the broadcaster acquired rights to this year's Indian Premier League competition.

The deal will see the broadcaster air 59 of 60 live matches on ITV4. The IPL starts on 12 March and runs for 45 days.

Coverage will be presented by Matt Smith with Bollywood actress and presenter Mandira Bedi who hosted Cricket World Cup coverage in India.

The IPL will also have a specialist section on the ITV.com website and has the right to webcast matches. The tournament will be supported by a prominent marketing campaign on ITV. In the UK, the rights were previously held by pay-TV service Setanta, which collapsed last year.

In January, YouTube struck a deal to webcast live IPL matches globally.

The IPL, which is an eight-team tournament of Twenty20 cricket, includes players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Shane Warne, Jacques Kallis and Chris Gayle. English players participating in this season's tournament include Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara and Owais Shah.

"In only two years, the Indian Premier League has already established itself as one of the world's most high profile and exciting sports events which attracts some of the very best cricketers from around the globe," said the ITV director of digital channels and acquisitions, Zai Bennett. "It is an exciting acquisition for one of the UK's fastest growing digital channels and we're delighted to be able to offer the whole tournament free-to-air to our viewers."

The chairman and commissioner of the IPL, Lalit Modi, said that he was delighted that the IPL tournament will be broadcast on a free-to-air channel.

I'm not complaining SS, but BBC's commentary/pundits are better than Matt Smith, who's usually a football presenter.

Mr. Cricket - Agree that the Chennai squad is very solid but with injuries to Flintoff and Oram and with your namesake only playing in the second half it might be tough. The bowling is especially weakened with injuries and loss of form -Ntini is a spent force and Murali has been ineffective recently on Indian pitches (although with a giant like that one can never rule him out). But if Hayden hits top form, they can go a long way. Dhoni and Raina are fair weather friends in 20/20 though and I can't see them turning matches on their own...even on home pitches.

But I have to admit I am biased towards Delhi!

That would be pretty awesome if Warner fires! Sehwag, Dilshan and Warner at the top of the order!! If they indeed play both Dilshan and Warner. It would be a great for the spectators though if they load the quota of the overseas players towards the batsmen. And oh, I forgot about AB, who will be handy to finish off where the top order leaves...

Steyn got hammered in the India vs South Africa ODI series, so bet 365 must be praying on the stupid to put on Steyn.

Nannes for me.

gauti and sehwag will open mate, warner and dilshan not bad reserves tho eh!
Gambhir will be number 3 this time. In sub-continent conditions, there's no point wasting Dilshan/Warner at 3.

the thing i like about the IPL is that the teams are almost all very well balanced, you cant say that there is one really terrible team who know haven't got a chance and no team that will defiantly win, thats what makes it so good

Thats the perfect shot full swing of the arms to the leg side and timed to perfection! 150 metres seems a bit of a guestimate but still a big ole hit!

Lets hope we see some of them in a bit!
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: eaowbear on March 12, 2010, 02:02:28 PM
Did look pretty large but there are a few others that stick in the memory:

Mark Waugh launching Vettori at the Waca that was absolutely massive
Nathan Astle's one off Caddick when he got his rapid double ton looked huge as kept coming at the camera
Flintoff's off Brett Lee at Edgbaston 2005 that went like a rocket/Brett Lee's off Harmison at Trent Bridge...so many....

My incompetent guess is that there will be 165 sixes in the tournament but probably going to be miles out!

Watched the IPL game this afternoon after work.  Was the first time I had seen any of the IPL.  Initial impressions were that the atmosphere sounded great, and some of the cricket was reasonable.  But the TV coverage was horrible, except the rather attractive lady on the ITV4 couch.  And time outs in a cricket match - awful!  T20 in England is a much more watchable product, but I would still watch a one sided Test match over any sort of this shorter form of the game.  I really enjoyed watching Alistair Cook craft an innings today, even against poor bowling, and T20 doesn't offer that kind of satisfaction.

I may watch one or two more of the games to see if it can spark any interest in me, but I'm not hopeful.

Some years ago, Rayudu was talked up as one of the successors to the India Fab 4. Then just drowned in the domestic scene. Good to see him perform.

Agreed (they say any publicity is good publicity), but if he doesn't use it everyone will start questioning why?  He's been netting with it for ages, so if he can't use it properly, there's no hope for the average cricketer.  Even if the bowling's better, the batting cancels it all out...

Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on March 14, 2010, 03:28:14 PM
Let's be honest it a novelty item that people may have in their bag....the hype surrounding it has firmly placed mongoose at the forefront on the cricket market and got them recognised which is hard to do as a new brand without offering something different I.e the mmi ....fair play to them in my books!

We did the same by changing the shape of a helmet from the norm and shape of pads and the in-fl-8 gloves without something new or innovative you would have to spend a fair bit to get recognised and take up a share of the market....blackcat are now looking to do similar with their innovation in the joker etc.

Would people talk about them so much if they had released a normal looking bat?? Prob not IMO and would fade away into the abyss with other brands competing for the same market

its amazing, him not using the MMi should be a negative point for the goose, but the fact they are talking about this bat so much, even in  a good sence when they say hes using the CoR3 is giving the bat so much great press

needs someone to break the back on it though and use one if its meant to be the same as a regular bat...we had the same with out lid when we issued 16 of them to the middlesex squad in the Stanford series only 2 of them got used but it was a starting point!

Fingers crossed mate....one of them has to be brave enough to give it ago....question is who going to be the shepeard to the sheep?

I think once someone has done it others will follow, just a case of getting that first one out to the square....hopefully in an hour or so's time the Mongoose MMI's IPL virginity will have been taken in match format.

Look forward to seeing one in action, hopefully one of your players will make score with it too. Article quite accurate in that despite the publicity it is not taking over kit bags, looks like your spiritual adviser is helping out with team mates getting photographed with one which is good for you.

i honestly think a big hitter like Raina going berserk with a mongoose for 5-10 overs in a small Indian stadium could be quite a spectacle! Fingers crossed it happens!!

If you could compile a team from all the players in the IPL who would it consist of? Entirely upto you what the balance of batsmen/bowlers is etc.

1. Sehwag
2. Sachin
3. Tiwary
4. Gilchrist (WK)
5. Bopara
6. Yuvraj-all-rounder
7. Pathan
8. Steyn
9. Lee
10. Murali
11. Malinga

Would be my line-up...tough as some batsmen prob wont get a chance with it being 20 overs only!!!
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: jandgcricket on March 19, 2010, 11:20:30 AM
No Kallis?
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on March 19, 2010, 11:24:18 AM
Tough call mate with the players who are in form perhaps Kallis may replace Yuvraj as the all-rounder, Jacques is in form Yuvi yet to fire......
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: SillyShilly on March 19, 2010, 11:32:56 AM
Raina's taken some decent catches, will his confidence carry through to his batting and will we finally see a MMI3 in action???? Watch this space!
I think i would drop Lee for Nannes and Bopara would be replaced by Hayden (at 4 not 5).....pretty mean line-up though!
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: yvk3103 on March 19, 2010, 11:33:20 AM
My XI would be:

1. Sehwag
2. Sachin
3. Tiwary
4. Gilchrist (WK)
5. Kallis
6. Raina
7. Pathan
8. Steyn
9. Pollard
10. Bret Lee
11. Shane Warne
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on March 19, 2010, 11:38:31 AM
Given old warney another go i see.....considered him but thought murli had the edge on him as the lead spinner with yuvraj throwing down 2/3 overs if needed
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: yvk3103 on March 19, 2010, 11:42:46 AM
Yuvi is out of form. Raina is a good replacement for him (bat/bowl/field). With the bowling line-up Raina would not be required to bowl anyway. Warney is a handy bat as well. On second thoughts, I may bring Kumble in for Warney...
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on March 19, 2010, 11:45:57 AM

Its on the ITV IPL website saying something like Haydens 93 with the controversial Mongoose bat?

complies to the laws, if we all stood still, we'd still be using hockey stick style bats

edit: The bowlers will be thinking about how to bowl against it now [well I hope so in this day and age :D]

Admittedly Hayden was hitting some nice sixes, but there have been bigger shots hit with a standard short handle bat in the tournament, I dont think it is ruining the game one bit. If the batsmen is seeing it well then he will hit a big 6 with a hockey stick, cricket bat or rounders bat....if a bowler is bowling well it wont really matter what the batsmen is using.

I agree, it isn't something I would use, but it has been given the green light from the MCC, and watching Hayden today was tremendous, I don't see it as controversial, cricket bats used to look like hockey sticks, it would be more controversial if someone walked out with something borrowed from the MCC museum!

Anyone saying the Mongoose should be banned is nuts, it does not break any law and does not threaten to impact as much as carbon handles did. I understand the MCC reasons for banning carbon as they had the capacity to hit the ball further but not have seen anything since that falls into this bracket. Unless the Joker has some sort of one bat test results to say 1,000,000% more power!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to see Hayden helping himself at the Buffet today, those DFL maximums will help a meaningless stat record, how many so far in 11 matches? 120+?

Is there a way of making a round handle oval? perhaps by adding tape under the grip?
I've got a new bat and the handle is a lot smaller than I first thought.

I have sort of done this using strips of padded tape (from the elastoplast section at Boots) on the handle and then a half grip over the top. not going to win any awards, but serviceable

I dont know why, but my dad hates the MMi, when I first asked for a goose for my 21st he thought I meant the MMi. Mind you, he is almost 60 and has played since he was 8, and his dad (my grandad) had 60+ years of cricket before he was out, hes a tradionalist

All I had to do today to annoy him about the goose was "did you hear about hayden and the mongoose? he hit nintey-"

and that was enough

batting at 6 in a t20 team doeasnt exactly give you much chance, i think if they gave morgan a proper go instead of "the wall" or kohli, he would make tons of runs!

i would have him opening with kallis, i think they would bat very well together

Why would Kumble have two overseas players opening? It's called the Indian Premier League, not International Premier League.

Secondly, Pandey and Kohli are better than Morgan. Pandey's the next great Indian batting star. Kohli's ODI stats p*ss all over Morgan's.

In my opinion, when Morgan gets going, he could be one of the best players in the IPL. Ok, admittedly, he has had a difficult opening, but I think he will come good soon. He is a high quality player and his last few innings for England proved that! Just going through a bad patch.
Title: Re: IPL 2010

Kohli's ODI stats p*ss all over Morgan's.

Granted, at the moment Kohli's ODI record is a lot better. How do their Twenty20 records compare?
Kohli  -    Twenty20 Games - 43 Avg. 22.06   SR 119.73   100s 0   50s  2
Morgan - Twenty20 Games - 50 Avg. 22.90   SR 125.36   100s 0       50s  4

In twenty20, the format we're discussing they're pretty similar.

also the indians have been doing well in ODIs, we had a 5-0 white wash only a few months ago, easy to perform when your side is winning matches.

Morgan would blatently do a better job, first of all because there is no area on the pitch that he cannot manouve the ball to, which means he can give more strike to kallis or go after the bowling himself should he choose to. just because players are indian does not make them better.

do not give me all that about it being indian premier league and thoroughly indian, because it would be absolutely nothing without the overseas players. what will you do when the money goes? hmmm

If your waiting for BCCI to go bust, you've got a long wait. The annual turnover is over $10b.

Why would RCB want Morgan to 'manoeuvre' the ball around when Kallis does that job? Pandey opens because he bats like Sehwag, and more importantly he amazingly talented. Kohli could easily open as well. Morgan will be carrying drinks by the weekend, when KP enters the fray.

Because twenty20 isnt about smashing the ball to all parts. If a team is struggling, picking up singles is a key part of the innings. And if Kallis is doing well, its good to get someone who can manouevre the ball around, get the main batsman on strike.

When Morgan gets going, he can hit the ball as cleanly and as big as any player in the world! Some of the sixes he was hitting for England were huge.

You've summed it up there, 'when Morgan gets going'. Guys like Pandey, Kohli and Uthappa can go from ball 1, no need for sighters. Therefore they bat before Morgan. No brainer really.
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: hit4six on March 25, 2010, 11:12:12 AM
It only takes one innings. Morgan is a class player, no doubt about it. I havent really been paying too much attention to Pandey, Kohli or Uthappa. No batsman in the world is like Sehwag, he is unique.
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: will5210 on March 25, 2010, 11:19:15 AM
a player who takes his time to 'get in' is bound to be more consistent in the long run, and therefore more useful to the team.

Morgan just needs a chance. I feel he's more of a closer anyway, and Bangalore really needed him much so far anyway.

Will probably lose out to KP though
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: hit4six on March 25, 2010, 11:22:39 AM
I agree Will. Kallis and Bopara are great examples of players who take their time, and get themselves in. I think Morgan will come good. And one good innings in his next game could well cement himself a place!

Uthappa can, Kohli and Pandey can't. They still need time to start their innings. Uthappa, as a result, is more hit and miss.

he was involved in the icl for a couple of seasons he relay is a top player

I dont know about anyone else but as the IPL has been aired on ITV4 this year I have been so addicted not missed a game (sky + all games) . . .never really followed it the first 2 seasons but im now totally hooked! Just cant decide who to follow . . .might base my decision on the best kit . . . Mumbai Indians/Dehli DareDevils

yeah its tricky to pick a team as i dont have any ties to india. i cant even pick a team based on players because they will get mixed around in the auction next year... the only thing i have to go on is playing atire and likelihood of success... therefore i am now a die hard, lifelong fan of RCB! (although i hate mark boucher, but he will be gone soon anyway :D doubt they will retain him in the auction)

Yuvraj and Irfan have been woeful thus far in IPL 3. Yuvraj was humiliated by Bond today, Yuvraj was totally clueless. Irfan's bowling was pathetic. No pace or swing.

Irfan's bowling is rivalling Ishant's and RP's on the sh*t-o-meter.

As a big big Irfan fan I have to agree.. He has glimpses for brilliance but than just seems to get carried away with a few good deliveries..

His batting has been ok, Punjab should just let him open..

just a quick question guys, not worthy of its own topic i feel... lets imagine, for example, that rajasthan royals get through to the t20 champions league and hampshire get in through the english t20 comp, who would michael lumb play for at the champions league?

is it his choice or are there rules?

If I remember rightly, in the 1st Champions League thing, the IPL team was going to take precedence, but then they changed it, I think the player chooses

To be fair to Ganguly, his family are very rich, so he has all ways had a very privileged life. Therefore he all ways got what he wanted. That a side, where he was the richest man in India or in the world, Sachin or Dravid couldn't careless.

With regards to ego, due to Ganguly being, lets say stuck up in nature, it has rubbed of on some of the other players. Harbhajan being prime example.

just checked the club website, actually it was 788 balls I faced last season - so it looks like i'd be lucky to faced 1000 balls as well!

No wonder these guys can make it look so easy. I remember when I was much younger, working on some specific shots with an ex-county player called Brad Donelan (Sussex i think) and he was doing throw-downs to me. My hands were red-raw by the time he was finished and that was only one shot!

Difficult to say if the bats are dodgy (as in laminated, carbon etc) or just continuous improvement on the theme of lighter, better willow. In any case, the 3 players who batted really well today (Vijay, Watson, Ojha) all thrive on timing and holding the shape. Which on a batting surface like Chepauk was a very potent combination unlike the power sloggers like Pathan and Raina. Except Morkel who is in the power camp but batted really well today.

Pretty surprised how well M Vijay played. In India, he's been labelled a Test match specialist. but he was exceptional today.

Post by: Alvaro on April 03, 2010, 10:09:30 PM
Jeet, you know I like Indian players but the bowling in three quarters of these teams is rank and that pitch today was a road. Saying that, M Vijay used his feet really nicely and that pick-up over cow corner was pretty exhilarating.
Oh, and in worst commentator stakes, Robin Jackman wins hands down.

Vijay was out of this world, his strokeplay was effortless at times, also good to see Morkel in some knick, but his bowling is just not a high enough class for a supposed T20 opening bowler...

Alvaro, the wicket was very flat, I can't remember the Chapauk ever being flatter(even when Sehwag scored 319 vs South Africa there). But you still have to score them.

With regards to the bowling, Tait, Warne, Watson on paper is fantastic, Tait was damn right awful today though.

Zaheer? Harbhajan? ????

Kumble(the old warhouse is better than ever!), Mishra(has been very good, sharp spin and good control), Pragyan Ojha(Deccan have been awful, but he can hold his head high). All Indian spinners have been good by and large.

Major let downs have been Irfan Pathan, RP Singh(econ of 10-12 per over!) , Sreesanth(he;s crap anyway), Munaf Patel, Ishant(career seems to be over at the age of 21!) All have played for India, pace have dropped vastly and can't bowl the right lines and lengths.
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: cd0070 on April 03, 2010, 11:19:08 PM
I think Irfan falls asleep during his overs.. He'll start most overs well first 4 balls 2 runs last 2 balls boundaries.. also at the end of the innings too.. Dunno if he gets too confident or what.. Besides Zaheer India has no pace (medium) bowlers.. sucks hardcore!!
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: Alvaro on April 03, 2010, 11:20:40 PM
exactly - the military medium fodder (worst bowlers are Narwal and Jaskaran Singh, who I honestly could tw@t about)  is just feeding the batsmen. In this IPL I must say that Mumbai Indians, and a lesser extent Chennai and Delhi, seem to be the only teams that could win without their overseas players.
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: cd0070 on April 03, 2010, 11:23:14 PM
I also dont get the obsession with Indian medium pacers trying bouncers with their lack of pace on Indian pitches!! When are they going to figure it out it doesn't work especially to the overseas players..

Once you get picked for Mumbai(Rohit play for Mumbai in the Ranji) you're almost certain to play for India.

Wasim Jaffer, domestic giant, international failure. Vinod Kambli, the same genius as Sachin(if not more), burnt out. Rohit's getting the Mumbai charm now.

Not all players from Mumbai are bad though...

but if being top of the table has no benefit to the team then its a pointless exercise.  if being top of the table meant an extra point on the leaderboard or something similiar which actually has a benefit to the winner of the fair play table then it would have more of an affect on improving 'fair play'.  as it stands its pointless and something the teams clearly care little about. just my angle on things!

his strike rate is phenomenal, and he has only come in with about five overs to go in most games. he has been a key cog in the mumbai tactic of accumulating and then surging at the end. it's definitely working, and they are favourites going into the semis. he also fields well and bowls. one of the better overseas contributors this year.

It's hard for Theron to play for Australia when he's South African.

All of Kings XI Punjab's senior players have struggled.

Yuvraj has been crap

Jayawardena has played two good knocks otherwise been poor

Sangakkara been very hit and hit.

Sreesanth has been awful

Brett Lee was shocking

Chawla has been fairly ordinary as well.

Irfan takes wickets but get slaughtered.
Title: Re: IPL 2010
Post by: niceonechoppy on April 16, 2010, 08:31:09 PM
Chawla bowled economically today, and grabbed one wicket. Also had a few other decent matches, not bad for a youngster.

Yuvraj was shocking today, his dismissal said it all, hits it down long offs throat and he was more disappointed with himself than thinking "I can get Mahela on strike, it doesnt matter", despite his obvious talent, the guy has massive flaws in his game, particularly his attitude...

With Sangakkara being captain, he's always going to pick his buddy Mahela. Mahela's been pretty ordinary part from his 110 and his 93. Exculding those knocks he's averaging 23.88!

It's tough luck on Bopara as I feel Shaun Marsh is a better T20 player.

Yeah I guess your right, got a golden duck lol. Kings 11 only got one game left, so they might as well ring the changes.

Talking off Marsh, Mitchell Marsh could be the next Andrew Symonds. Such a clean hitter of the ball.

Marsh 59 in 3 knocks @ 19.66 - not setting the world on fire. He is a good player, but Bopara can feel aggrieved.

Bopara has set the world on fire either and if i had to pick a batsmen who i would put my mortgage on it certainly wouldn't be Ravi. Sangakkara and Jayawardena are a different class compared to ravi and both have done OK imo however not much back up from the rest of the team.

The batting order changes to much for my liking and as people have said
Yuvraj has been very poor but to class him as a mug shows who the mug is.

Its really exciting, but I feel its a bit long.. Just waiting for the Semis now..

I would recommend BCCI - to start its own channel and broadcast all this own their own.. During the IPL they can follow each team like in a reality tv show.. That would be fun to watch all these international superstars with young and local Indian players..

IPL2 and IPL3 are to much about making money and not about the cricket.

That was a bit of a shocker on ITV's part. But ITV where trying not to show the Indian advert, which gets played every over.
