Not been on here for a fair while!
After my dad sadly passing away 3 weeks ago from heart failure it has given me a kick up the bum to try and shift some weight!
Me, Ryan and a few team mates are doing fitness training once a week as well to help with this!
Didn't wanna post all this sh*t to facebook so im going to be logging it all here.
Just for a bit of moral support :)
Started on Sunday dieting and will be doing as much exercise as i can!
My weight on Sunday evening was 24 stone 2lbs! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
see how it goes :)
-
good luck mate and condolences
started mine yesterday as well so I feel your pain (literally)
-
Always knew their was a thin lad waiting to get out ;) . Best of luck Simdog, I'm trying to shift a few pounds/stone as well. What is your diet and exercise regime going to be?
-
Sorry to here of your loss mate and good luck on the weight loss...
-
Sad to hear the news mate. Those quick singles and all run fours are only a few months away :D
-
I'm sure I speak for everyone on here in wishing you our condolences at the loss of your father.
Good luck with the weight loss and have a look at the recent off season fitness topic, which has a fair bit on diet as well as fitness training to give you a kick start. Keep us up to date at your progress, and remember chocolate is bad!

at the moment just got this myfitnesspal thing at the moment on my phone. so just gonna be calorie counting... plus the mrs is on slimming world so tbh will probs just eat what ever she eats.
thinking about going joggy a few days a week but did this other year and my knee was giving me issues(probs gonna be when am so heavy)
so iv'e ordered an exercise bike so planning just to do like 20-30mins on a bike every evening see how it goes.
its all new to me really cos ive never given a (No Swearing Please) about my weight before.
-
I echo everyone - condolences Simmy.
Best of luck with the weight loss.
-
I would suggest getting some kind of gym membership. Its not just CV you can do. Weights help tone and build muscle, which in turn helps to increase your metabolism and burn more calories.
-
Sorry about your dad.
I used myfitnesspal to lose a couple of stone last year and my wife is using it now. Really makes you think about the food you eat and works.
I did quite a lot of walking too, easier than running and even if it's just having a walk round town in your lunch break it all helps. I also used to cheat a bit by buying boiled sweets to eat at nights so instead of a big bag of crisps or something I'd have a few of those, still not very healthy but far less calories and made me feel like I was still having something to eat.
Good luck.
-
got no chance of getting to a gym mate have far to much on with pretty much running two jobs and other stuff.
i do walk the dog pretty much everyday so i do do little bits.
yes on the building muscle stuff. we was doing alot of core stuff on sunday when we was in the field.
but am sure sit ups etc press ups etc all help. anyway will see how i get on.
doing something is better than doing nothing.
yesterday when i was hungry was just eating a few apples seemed to do the job :)
-
Carrot sticks is a good substitute for snacks - they are crunchy and not as dull as some other stuff!!!
I also have myprotien instant oats - it is basically oat flour - whack it in a milkshake for a low GI snack. It keeps you full but is not as sugary as most other snacks!
-
I cant get to gym either so doing t25 again as can do it at home in 25 min plus lost a stone in 4 weeks before I got hurt playing so had to stop
hoping with better diet I'll loose more in same time as didn't really eat right last time
anything is better than nothing mate
-
The reality is that you will lose more weight by organising your diet properly than by any amount of exercise (regardless of what the government or anyone else tells you). The exercise should help to improve the way you burn the energy you put into your body, but without a properly managed diet, you won't lose weight.
To do this, the best bet is to stick to eating a maximum number of calories per day (usually for male weight loss something between 1600 and 2000 is recommended), and try and do it in protein (makes you feel full longer), fats and low GI carbs (Oats, Brown Rice, Sweet Potato). If you "eat clean" i.e. cut out processed foods, you'll be surprised at how much food you get to eat and how little hunger you find you have.
Unfortunately people tend to focus on exercise first, where diet is really the most important.
-
Tim is pretty much spot on, sporting your diet plays a far bigger part in weight loss than exercise, obviously that helps too, but if you're only going to address one make it what you eat.
-
cheers for advice guys.
thats pretty much what am doing concentrating on what i eat then do what exercise i can.
as i can get into a routine with eating but due to other commitments exercise is gonna be hit and miss.
im gonna try and be under 20 stone by April
-
Good luck mate, setting yourself an achievable goal like that over a decent length of time will certainly help - I can also recommend MyFitnessPal too, when I used it previously I lost over 3 stone without changing my exercise levels at all, just make sure you add all your meals/snacks into it!
-
Condolences, always bad to lose someone.
Regarding weight loss, sticking to the wife's slimming world will help a lot. I did that last year and went from over 17 to under 15 in about 3 months and kept it off since.
-
Hey Simms, sorry to hear that mate.
I know there has been a few messages etc already but of you need any on diet and exercise plan let me know iv lost 2st in last. 7 months by just changing a few dietary plans and little and often exercise
-
Sorry to read about father sincere condolences
With you on the weight loss and change of diet has told yesterday my cholesterol is 6.5.
-
Sorry to hear mate, all the best with the weight loss!
-
Terrible news Simmy, glad to see you're looking at doing something productive.
A friend of mine has seen a few members have heart problems and has taken it upon himself to shed down on the weight. He got up to 27 stone. He was an active worker and bowled 20 overs of spin on a Saturday, 8 overs on a Sunday and played as a goalkeeper in the winter, thus he diet was the wrong side of appalling.
Over the last 9 months he has shed about four and a half stone. Although this is not a fair reflection as he is putting on muscle as well, in pure fat lose, god knows what he has lost. It is his intention to get down to 18 stone. He is currently challenging himself to lose 56 pound in 112 days (3.5 pounds a week) and halfway through he is well on course. His aim is to be 18 stone by the start of the next season.
His advice, set goals. Its what gets you through it. Make them realistic so when you fail on a weekly basis you feel guilty, when you beat them you feel like you're really getting somewhere.
PS. I agree with all of the above. 80% = diet, 20% = exercise in my book.

this just 100% sounds like me lol play cricket and football as a keeper pretty active but my diet is shocking :)
but all will change :)
i feel better already eating less crap and im only 3 days in :)
-
Simmy, you mentioned you don't get time to go to the gym, my advice would be purchase a kettlebell (start with a 16kg), you can store this in a corner at home and knock out some kettlebell swings, along with good diet it will burn he fat away and will be easy on your joints, you also get very fit. Tracy Reifkind is a qualified KB coach and lost loads of weight doing KB swings this is her blog http://tracysfoodandthought.blogspot.co.uk (http://tracysfoodandthought.blogspot.co.uk). If you decide to use KB's make sure you use good technique and you'll reap the benefits, with fat loss and improved performance for cricket and football ( due to the ballistic hip hinge movement and body strengthening controlling the offset KB weight).Good luck.
-
This winter I'm hoping to complete the T25 workout routine. It looks doable and doesn't take up too much time and of course watching my diet.
-
You can do it lad eye of the tiger
-
Redders is Mr kettlebell, goes to classes every week he tells me. I think it might be more to do with the female company though ;-)
-
Sincere condolence on your loss. May his soul rest in peace.
As most said, I concur there opinions. One of my best friend is professional fitness trainer and has served Pakistan National cricket team for three years and is now back to academy working with grassroot level players. He always tells me it is all about diet (as other said 80% while rest is training, Alex Ariza (Amir Khan, Manny Pacquiao et al former conditioning coach also says this.).
I would suggest having a high fibre breakfast, that goes onto help for rest of the day. Also don't eat anything at least 3.5 hours before going to bed.
I often feel those who start off very fiercely get off track as fiercely, so gradually increase the intensity and work your way up. In order to reach at top, one starts from bottom.
Every pushup counts. Every sit-up counts. Every step counts. Every move counts. Nothing goes in vain.
All the best, this (thread) is also motivation for me as I am currently around 14 stones and want to get at least to 13 stones before December ends. So, thank you :-).
Good luck!

At 5ft 5 inches and 13 stone 4 ounces and a 40 inch waist I am classed as obese So for me now it's eat like a king in the morning
Eat like a prince at lunchtime and eat like a pauper at tea time.

Sounds like you might need to be eating like a pauper in the morning, a peasant at lunchtime and a tramp at tea.... ;)

Ha ha yes with a cholesterol level of 6. 5 the doctor has told me get down to 9 stone 10 ounces.
-
Almonds, they release a chemical that reduces the urge for snacking. alot more science involved but thats the jist!
also pilates is worth a go. as it focuses on the mind and not just the body. ive just stated these classes myself due to fitness and health issues and they are really good.
keep up the good work!

Cut out alcohol, chips and takeaways and you will be surprised how much weight you lose and how much extra cash you have.

John is spot on, I'd lost about a stone and got down to just under 17, had a couple of nights out and a week of poor eating and put half a stone back on!
-

Just read this thread, sorry to hear your sad news.
9lbs is a great start, it's usually only minimal amount of weight loss in the first few weeks so keep at it, and it gets easier to lose weight the longer you keep at it.
-
Well done mate
Dreading my weigh in tommorow
-
14 pounds in a stone Simmy!
First week is usually okay for weight loss, a big drop, followed by a hard week, keep at it even if next weeks results aren't as impressive!
-
zero loss this week :( having been on the exercise bike 3 times this week for 20 min sessions and not really eating anything bad apart from fish n chips on sat. (after walking 4 miles)
bit disappointed :(
Start weight : 24 stone 2lbs
Week1: 23.7lbs
Week2: 23.7lbs
-
Keep going mate - next week you'll have a cracker! The body can be treacherous at times, and it looks like nothing is happening.
I've been losing tiny amounts recently, but this last week went well and I'm looking at having a 15 at the start of my weight for the first time since I had hair!!!
Keep going my man - and I hope the fish was boiled!!!
-
I've been taking part in a weight loss challenge with 4 other lads I play with. It was being done on % of weight loss, rather than actual weight loss (if that makes sense). We've been doing it for 3 weeks and I've lost just over half a stone (I think, metric to imperial is not my strong point) just by changing what I'm eating. Not changing anything to do with my physical exercise. Just shows how much (No Swearing Please) I was eating! I've just had to contend with being starving at work! Lol
Start weight: 102.3kgs
Week 2: 99.0kgs
Week 3: 98.4kgs
-
keep going simdog it will even out
im down 8 pounds in 2 weeks to just under 18 stone with 2 stone to go
this my fitness pal is great as didn't realise how many calories and crap just in soft mints!!!!!!!!
t25 is helping as well as getting toned as well
I'm routing for you simmy
-
Best advice I was given at the gym by a nutritionist, it's not the calories that matter that much but more the sugar intake, people think fat makes you fat. That's the biggest misconception, the best thing do cut out to lose weight is SUGAR as sugar gets sorted as fat deposits on the body. My fitness pal is great for pointing out all these hidden sugars foods have.
-
If Simmy gets down to a fighting weight, he will be once of the better players on here!
Key point, when you hit 16stone and the money offers come!! Dont spend it in MCDS!
-

Just be careful not to over do it, so your body doesn't go in to a starvation mode.
-
Starvation mode is a bit of a misnomer. If you are significantly overweight, your body can happily live off your fat supplies without going into this for a reasonably long time.

bull crap this!

I was 11 stone last December. Ruptured my spleen and spent 6 months laying in bed recovering.
Returned to work. Got called fat. Weighed my self and weighed 15stone.
Got given the all clear on August 18th and started training. And more importantly eating properly!
I lost one and a half stone in 3 weeks. Unfortunately I've hit a wall and only lost 2 and a half oz in 5 weeks. Despite. Working out a hell off a lot more.
I know weigh 13.2 and although I still believe I could lose some weight of my stomach. I do have to admit. I feel fitter than I ever have in my life currently.
Looking forward to being back in the nets and preparing for next year now.
Good luck with this simmy. Hard work will pay off.
-
Keep with it Simdog, it WILL happen :-)
-
Just keep at it mate, when I lost 3 stone at Uni it was the same - the first stone came off straight away and then it plateaued for roughly 6 weeks but I started to shift the weight again (one of my house-mates was doing a sport science course and reckoned it was to do with my body adjusting to the change or something along those lines!)
Persevere and we'll be calling you Slimmy in no time ;)
-
This thread seems to have gone quiet...
Just had my weigh in for week 9 of my challenge and in total I've lost 10.4 kgs in total (I think it's just over 10% of my body weight as well).
How is everyone's winter fitness regime going?
-
Mines going well, almost daily sessions (moderate) of Turkish get ups and Kettlebell swings, shredding a bit of fat, improved conditioning, all over strengthening (especially the shoulder sockets).
-
I'm down 10kg since August...
-
How is everyone's winter fitness regime going?
I've forgotten to start mine every week since the end of the season :-[
-
I'm up around a Kg since i started training for the winter, but going up around 5 kg's in weight was my aim so I'm possibly a bit behind schedule. Definitely down a fair bit in body fat though, or at least I was until a boozy weekend back home.
-
I am down 15lbs since end of September. Its probably more as I started beginning of September but didn't bother measuring for the first 4 weeks and then the wife got competitive about it....
-
I've slowed down/plateaued a little as 14lb down but im finding it hard to loose weight quickly as im training and toning at same time so loosing a lot of fat
down 2 trouser sizes so going well on the fat burn
-
How's everyones winter training going (before it's ruined by xmas)?
I'm still doing almost daily training of 100 Kettlebell swings (10x10) and 10 TGUS (alternate each side). I'm feeling much more athletic due to the bio mechanics of the swing, really strong core and more agile due to working the working differet planes with TGU. Generaly feeling stronger, but not bulky and ready for the season.
-
Just been following the stronglifts program and slowly increasing my 'lifts', getting to the stage where I'm starting to plateau with the upperbody ones though (Bench and Overhead) got 2 more weeks then I'm off to Dubai for xmas so hopefully won't undo too much of my good work.
Since I started my weight hasn't shifted by more than a couple of hundred gram no matter how much extra eating I tried to do!
-
Lost another lb this week, despite Jakes cakes. Must of been those 4 goes against the bowling machine!
-
Need some encouragement here really lads can anyone help me out with what I can do?
I'm a tall lad 6' 6" and about 17 and half stone. My running as absolutely shocking and I'm slow, when I was really fit I weighed in at 15 stone 8 which is where I want to be before the start of next season.
I've bought myself a mountain bike and have decent access to plenty of countryside. I think I need to tackle my eating and build in exercise as well.

First thing to do is keep a food diary for a week on myfitnesspal and see how many calories you consume.
I reckon you'll be shocked if you do it honestly.
Then you look at reducing those calories. I've found Low Carb, Higher Fat to be a good way to lose weight. I have been restricted to 2000 cals per day, eating only 30-50g of total carbs.
Since the middle of August, I've lost more than ten kilos (going from 100.3kg to 89.8kg), halved my body fat percentage (from 25.4% to 13%) and reduced my blood pressure and resting pulse. Exercise has all been weights based.
Typically, weight loss is 90% what you eat/how much you eat and 10% exercise, so that's where you will need to start.
-
I started using my fitness pal just to get a better idea of what I was eating and I find it very difficult to eat over 2000 a day without eating stuff thats clearly junk. My target is 2600 a day and I find that I hardly ever get there unless I get lazy and eat takeaway.
-

The really easy way I increased my calories was myprotien instant oats. It is basically oat flour, put it in a milkshake and its an easy 300 calories with no effort and keeps you full as its low GI. It is also mega cheap. When I was playing rugby fairly competitively I had to eat a good 3000 calories a day just to maintain my weight as I am naturally very slight. I do not like nuts but a lot of people have a handful of nuts or seeds. If this helps?

Why is 2600 your target?
Thats what the guy I'm training with reckoned I should be looking to hit if I want to go slowly up in weight with the exercise I'm doing.
-
I'm struggling with the eating part
Basically,, I'm on the road all day, so unless I can find a decent services, I'm struggling
I'm trying to cut out the bad foods,,nothing processed and minimal carbs.
But hard work
I've started to do 3x30 body weight squats and 3x30 press ups 3x times a week
Also doing a few exercises on a smallish multigym I have
My weights gone up to 106kg, from a fairly steady 103kg
Once my backs feeling ok, I'm gonna have a go with the kettlebells, as I feel it's definitely relevant to crickets movements
-

The key to lifting heavier is to perfect the skill of your lift, then the lift becomes easier over time, your CNS adjusts to the weight and thus you slowly bring in the next weight up. Just my 2cents, but I'd say focus on the mechanics of the lift over forcing in calories. Your body will tell you when it needs more food.

You could well be correct, I just stuck 2600 in as my daily target in MFP, I haven't really made any effort to hit a calorie target per day, just noted that what I eat normally tends to come in just below the 2k mark, unless i hit the booze or am hungover!
-

You'll be suprised at the carry over to cricket. I've been using them for 5 years and looking to qualify as a KB coach next year, feel free to ping me any questions when you get started.
-
Will do,,cheers
Bought a 32kg bell off eBay !!! (Very low bid and won)
Not gonna be swinging that anytime soon!ha
Will try and get a 16kg bell

Try treating your lift session as practise trying to perfect the technique, like you would in the nets. Overtime the weight you lift will go up and you'll probably start eating more.

with the 5x5 program the weight goes up every time you successfully manage the 5x5 lifts for that exercise. I did drop a fair bit in weight at one point with both the deadlift and squats because i felt I needed to work on my technique.

Thought I'd add this picture here off my progress this winter.

You ought to get that rash seen to lol Good effort on the weight though!
-
I'm going the other way, in the last 2 years i have dropped over a stone in muscle since the little one came along plus starting a new business. Gone from 60kg up to 63kg at the moment looking to get back up to around 70kg by the start of the season. Really struggled last year as my fitness and strength where so poor.
-
You ought to get that rash seen to lol Good effort on the weight though!
Just seen this. No rash. That's a massive bruise that appeared after I Ruptured my spleen.
And yes it was done by a bouncer in our club nets. Wear your chest guard people.
-
Now then, now then, now then!
Finally stood on them scale things for the first time in 3 years mid November, and all I will say is I nearly (No Swearing Please) myself when I saw the number!
So far I've not really done any specific exercise, but I've eaten less and done more walking than standing around talking when I take Tammie out.
So far I've lost 9lb in a month! Lets just say I had a lot to lose so I see that as a start, but theres a long way to go!
Ideally I want to lose another 3 stone and will re-assess myself from there, but getting down to that weight could take me a while :-[
-
Everyone back in training after Xmas?

Been training over Christmas now up to 66kg so have 4kg or so to go to get back up to where i used to be, feeling a lot stronger and fitter. Going to up my cardio in the next few weeks then it will be all about maintenance and working on my bowling in the nets.
-
im now the heaviest ive ever been, 12.9st which for someone of 5'10-5'11 isnt great at all, especially since ive always been a slight or athletic build rather than bulky. ive had a horrendous diet now for 12-18 months and i have 3 months before i go on holiday and 3 and a half months before the season starts to cut the weight and build some muscle. my aim is to be fitter than i ever have been and even though this might sound difficult to do in 3 months, i reckon i can do it if i push myself hard enough.
-
that's my normal weight King Pair and im 5.10 and have hardly any fat or muscle :(
I am quite thickset in the shoulders and chest naturally but over Christmas seem to have grown a gut, time to get some press ups done ........ I make take up the "100 press up challenge" ........... anyone else up for it???
-
Im starting on Thursday but I've got to take it easy as I've injured my right shoulder/chest. Really hurts when I throw the ball but it doesn't when I bowl

I have quite wide shoulders, i always have, just not very meaty. traditionally ive been about 11.5 stone, but for me now, i have put fat on, jusst pure fat rolls everywhere and thats what i need to sort out. im not massive on weighing myself to be honest, its more about how i look so i'll be relying on progress pictures more than weight.
whats the 100 press up challenge?
-
Cut out all carbs, eat 2000 calories per day, go the gym three times per week and do either weights or HIIT and watch the fat drop off. You can easily lose two stone in three months if you focus on it.
-
its a 7 week free programme to get any one upto 100 press ups in a single go ........... I got upto 60 a few years back but a new baby stopped my progress

im aiming for 1500 cals a day and then gym 4 times a week (at least 45mins- an hour of cardio) and net once a week. just using machine weights at the moment and giving myself an all round work out, so not focusing on one or 2 things a day just trying to rebuild abit of strength and then after the first month i will start doing proper weight sessions aswell as my cardio
i might have a go at this challenge closer to the season
-
1500 calories seems a bit drastic if you are going to the gym 4 times a week for an hour, you might find you have a lack of energy for training.
-
Not only that, but at 1500 calories, your body will use your muscles as an energy source and you'll lose both fat and muscle mass, which you don't want to do.
-
Hmmm, i might up it then, im going hard at it for a month to drop fat and then after that i will up my cal intake and start the protein shakes i used to have to build some muscle. my first port of call is mainly drop the horrid belly and back fatty i have developed.
-
With the whole calorie intake thing - it pays to be a little careful. Losing weight too quickly can result in a greater loss of muscle mass than if you were to lose the weight more slowly (as tim2000s says). The recommended weight loss to maintain the maximum amount of muscle mass is around 1-1.5 lbs a week. Very roughly, to lose a pound of fat, you need to drop 3500 cals a week - or 500 per day. So, really it should be your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) - 500cals. That's without doing any exercise. If you exercise, you need to take that into account in your calorie intake.
However, you need to know what your BMR is before you can work out the number of calories you need to consume. You can plug numbers into online calculators like: http://www.1percentedge.com/ifcalc/ (http://www.1percentedge.com/ifcalc/) - I'd suggest saying that your activity level is "sedentary" for this, and then adding calories burned as and when you burn them.
-
I'm still working almost daily on Pavel Tsatsoulines Simple and Sinister programme (10x10 kettlebell swings and 10x1 alternate TGU's), currently progressing with 32kg bell, hoping to own it by the season and bring in the 40kg bell. I usually start weekly hill sprints around Feb and a few 400m runs leading up to the season, just planning how to fit these in witha new baby due in Feb.
-
All good advice above biggest mistake people make is to drop a 1000 calories a day and hit the gym and wonder why they get nowhere.
-
As a bit of a different take on this subject, how do you guys 'reward' yourselves or have a 'cheat' meal etc.?
Do you have something once a week/once every 2 weeks/not at all/per stone lost etc.?
Interested to here peoples views on this side.
My parents a couple of years back list 18 stone between them in less than a year, they had a cheat meal every week without missing. They pretty much swore that it helped kick-start their metabolism every week while just giving you the feeling of getting through the week dieting.
-
Nothing wrong with a cheat meal would probably hold off for the first 3-4 weeks to get your body in tune with the new diet. but once the training and dieting has started the body won't have a problem metabolising the one meal once a week, obviously don't eat a bag of sugar or drink 10 litres of coke as the cheat meal and you should be fine. On a side note my vice is a glass of wine, of which i'm staying off while training but if i do really fancy one i won't deny myself, as with all diets it's just a lot of common sense really.
-
i have a love for TOBLERONES ........... the large ones
-
Doombar :)
-
When I did the first phase of this last year, there were no cheat meals, just a carb reload at 15 days, which was sweet potato and brown rice! The "sweet" things were the practically carb free protein shakes in caramel flavour after the gym sessions. I also didn't touch alcohol for two months. The effect was a weight loss of 26lbs.
-
Yeah, bit of weights, no or very limited booze and just not eating to much absolute trash is the real basics to it.
I've gained a whopping 1.5kg's since the end of the season, but I reckon I must have lost a couple more of fat to muscle, just really struggle to eat more than about 2400 calories a day no matter what I do.
-
Just got over a bad virus,,moving house,,etc etc
But managed to lose a little bit of my belly, due to not being sat on my (No Swearing Please) for three weeks while off on leave
Will start training tonight, with my new 'outdoor' gym,,as I've lost my garage!
Body weight squats
Press ups
Various shoulder exercises with dumbells
Will start the kettlebells soon
I'm hoping to fit into 32 inch waist clothing again!ha
-
Quick revival for this thread!
Since mid January i've lost 6lb and am going to start making a proper effort to shift my spare tyre.
No more excuses and a target to lose 2 stone!
-
I'm still progressing with my almost daily Kettlebell Turkish get ups and swings. I feel trim, fit and strong going into the season (even with the sleep deprivation that comes with a newborn baby). I'm finding I'm able to stay more stable and get more power in to my shots in practise. I'm also able to get more rotation and pace on my part time offies.
If any one is interested here's a good article on why KB swings and TGU's carry over to playing sport, this pertains to Golf, but I find the same for cricket.

Still progressing well, total lost so far this winter is somewhere around 25 lbs, so another 10 lbs since end of November. No real secret, tried not to eat rubbish or overeat, hit the gym alot and done plenty of gardening inbetween. The latter can burn plenty of calories, try pulling up bushes and tree roots, lifting and laying 20kg rolls of turf, hammering down borders, cutting down branches and you won't need a gym session afterwards! Currently I'm the lightest I have been for a good 10-15 years, my back feels good if not 100% just yet and fitness is improving all the time.
-
I know that feeling nick. I'm now the same weight I was at uni, twenty years ago!

Same here try to eat whole foods and as organic as possible and not too much, it worked for 100's of year before packaged processed foods. Rarely snack just 3 main meals really with the very occasional indulgence and hey presto no need for wonderful diet fads!
I read somehere that bowlers back in the day of Larwood et al would stay fit by physical work and gardening ;)

Not sure if its of any use too you guys but I was struggling to drop fat even after leaving the fatty food & beer alone. Came across carb blockers which have been working very well. I take 1 a day 40min before dinner and have seen a marked improvement in fat loss.

I've never used these but from the little if do understand they cause carbs to pass out of the stomach and into the intestine, where where it is turned into triglycerides. So you don't get rid of the calories. The body just uses them in a different form. And it may cause some discomfort.
Have you also reduced carb intake?

Slightly if anything but only very slightly :)

I've been curious about all the slimming pills out there. From what I have read, very few do anything good and most are useless at best. I'm sure it works for you but the only thing I've read that is close to being proven to work is Protein powder followed by multi vitamins. I take protein powder in shakes and it feels like it helps recovery from exercise. The other reason which I think Tim mentioned is to try and fight off losing muscle mass as you slim down. Apart from adding a few hundred calories to the diet, the 30-40 grams of protein help recovery and fight off the ravages of time. I think it's something like you lose 50% of your muscle mass between 25 and 50. A major reason for the metabolism slowing down (correct me if I'm wrong).
-

Ok, I'd research in to them before just taking them. My grasp (i'm no doctor) of them is that instead of turning the carb into ready to use energy i.e. sugar (which you are blocking). It is turning it into triglycerides (fat deposits in the blood), too much can cause heart problems. Fat is good it's a steady energy release, but like everything too much of it is bad, just like carbs. The weight you are losing is probably water. Are you low carbing as well? I've heard of people taking another substance called Alli (i think) to remove the Fat created, but this just seems like needless supplements to me. If you are looking to kick start weight loss you could try low carb for a short time or intermittent fasting, its cheaper and better for you.
-
Triglycerides (Trigs for short) are actually the worst form of cholesterol. Taking something that converts carbs to trigs is really, strongly, not recommended.

The research I did prior to trying them did not suggest the same findings as you have found but its definitely food for thought. My plan was only to try them for two months and see where it leaves me. Might have to reconsider using them :)

Never used car blockers. But have used thermorepure and thermorepure extreme of my protein. They certainly help. Our lass say I'm like a radiator and the suppress hung well.
Neither are as good as grenade though. Those are the bomb when it comes to fat burners.

Like I said I'm no doctor, so feel free to take my comment with a pinch of salt, but I'd always err on the side of safety and natural products, as I've never seen any long term impact research on these products and almost all the research that there is, has been paid for by the companies that make them.

Time to resurrect this old gem of a thread.
I've lost 10lb since the middle of March (roughly 1lb a week) without doing too much different. Eat less and walk more.
Even with 20lb gone since Xmas I'm still a fat knut mind you... Long way to go but I'm on the right track
-
Has it affected your girth at all?
-
Has it affected your girth at all?
My girth has reduced by a few inches.
Little Cam's girth has remained the same but he does look longer. Less stomach plus a decent manscaping job works miracles ;)
-
I've just seen this thread, I'm in a similar position to where Simmy started off (Around 24 stone!).
I've put on about 2 stone since I started Uni last September, from basically drinking too much and eating a load of rubbish! Anyway, cricketing wise I basically gave my wicket away on Saturday on 85 because I was knackered, this isn't a good thing and is definitely a wake up call!
I go back to uni in 3 months and would love to lose around 3 stone as I reckon I'd feel normal again. Anyone got any tips? My main problem is getting motivated to lose it!
-
@ianbuchanan as far as motivation goes I think what has helped me most is having someone to go out with.
I have a dog which means I have to go on a walk at least once a day (evening walk is my job).
On Sunday I walked about 7 miles with a friend. We were in town after seeing a film and had time to kill, so we went for a walk along the seafront. She had a geocaching app on her phone so we went and looked for a couple of those (didn't find them) but had a good time doing it.
The other thing is moderation, I've found having 3 pints instead of 8 has worked wonders too...

Film... Long walk on the beach... Any other exercising activities with this 'friend'?!
On a serious note, the drinking is really a problem for me! Switching from Cider to Gin&Tonic from now on!
Just been to buy some scales today, the only time I've been strict to a diet/not easting crap before is by getting on the scales every couple of days!

Cutting out carbs after 6pm.... Try that mate

well when i started this shifted a stone. now i'm heavier than i was to start with.
over winter im gonna smash it as its impacting my cricket now!
got hit with a short ball last night so trip to A&E today!

Only one way eat better and train more
-
Eat mostly plants with some protein and carbs, move around (you don't have to kill yourself in the gym). To lose weight you need to use more energy than you consume, but ensure your body is getting the right nutrients or you will crave more food. A good book to read is Micahel Pollan's 'In defense of food'. Approach exercise with a longer term view, going mad in the gym to lose a few pounds is counter productive, you will crave more food and probably end up injured, then fed up and back to square one. Do movement you enjoy (which might be the gym) and fits into your daily life. Losing weight isn't linear, take a wider view.
-
For a long time the food industry has peddled the idea that exercise is the way to lose weight. Sadly, this just isn't true. Exercise makes you burn calories more efficiently, but you need to eat the right sorts of food. The best way to describe it is eating clean and managing consumption.
Most people lose weight if they cut out processed foods and refined sugars, and stick to eating recipes made up from natural ingredients (i.e. ones you've made yourself) while ensuring that you don't stuff your face. It's surprising how much weight you'll lose on 2000 calories a day without going near a gym and how full you will feel.

How's everyones winter training going (before it's ruined by xmas)?
I'm still doing almost daily training of 100 Kettlebell swings (10x10) and 10 TGUS (alternate each side). I'm feeling much more athletic due to the bio mechanics of the swing, really strong core and more agile due to working the working different planes with TGU. Generally feeling stronger, but not bulky and ready for the season.
Mid season update:
I'm still training as above, but slightly changed my schedule to prioritise cricket matches/training.
Monday/Wed/Friday(morning) as above currently using mostly 32kgs for TGU and Swings, but slowly bringing in the 40kg KB for some sets.
I had originally set aside Sunday/Tues and Thurs as rest days, but really missed the daily swings (or the after effects), so now I do 10 x 10 swings 2 handed with the 24kg (which feels really light) consentrating on overspeed, which I've noticed is great for recovery.
Cricket training Wednesday, play on Saturday.
The results of my training on the pitch are increased speed, better coordination, better movement (I can dive for pretty much anything in the field), solid core, my dodgy shoulder is more stable and I'm able to throw with more power, more stamina in my legs, better all round fitness and improved hand strength, even the most hard hit catches now stick.
I usually train early in the morning, before the kids get up, or if I miss my alarm in the evening after work. 5 mins of mobility work, a few squats, hip extension and shoulder work for warm up then roughly 20 mins of easy pace Kettlebell work.
Apart from the positive effects on the pitch, the best part of this training is it's sustainable.

32kg!!!!
Fair play that sir
I've still not got round to sorting a few kettlebells ( I got a 32kg one off eBay that I can barely pick up!!)
I will have a go,, as I can't afford gyms down sarf and the kettlebells could be done on my patio outside
-

Start of a with the 16kg, the important thing is to get the technique right, then progress with the weight. It's more of an organic progression through the KB weights than chasing a heavier weight. I've looped back many times to the lighter KB if I've felt I've rushed to the next KB too soon. If you focus on the technique of the movement everything else will follow, it's a definite change in mind set from the usual gym rat stuff! I do mine on the patio too, but with rubber mats under the KB, you don't want to smash a slab with it :)
-
10x10 a with a 16kg?
Alternate days or everyday?
Do you do any isolation lifting or owt? Like biceps or triceps exercises for instance?
-
I follow a program called simple and sinister by Pavel tsatsouline, its a general strength and conditioning program. You can get the book off amazon fairly cheap. Its a moderate program meaning you never go near failure and so don't need heavy medium light days or rest days. Its designed to be done pretty much everyday, but rest or go lighter depending on how you feel. Anyone starting out using kbs should follow this program.
-
How did your training programmes benefit or impede your season?
-
Ended up doing no exercise at all, but really tried with my eating crap, cutting out as much sugar as possible and definitely no ready meals
I've stayed injury free and lost a couple of kilos off my waist
Joined a local gym yesterday and I'm gonna take it steady over the winter, looking to build a little maintenance strength really, as opposed to bulking up or owt like that.
Main thing for me is to try and increase mobility as I'm sat driving most of the day,(50k a year!)
So looking to build leg strength but sticking to plenty of reps.
The food thing for me is the most important thing, as I didn't realise how badly I'd been eating,,,way too much processed and too much sugar.
A good you tube film is 'fat sick and nearly dead' ,,,really opened my eyes
-
50k, that's a lot of driving! You'll benefit heaps from some mobility work, as would anyone over 30. In the gym stick to 5 reps or less 3-5 sets, this is the optimum strength range and not hypertrophy. Let your heart rate come down between sets.
-
I've tried the Insanity and P90X. Overall, I found them to work but a bit excessive. I think it's really challenging to work out 5-6 times a week at that level of intensity. My knees, hips and back just aren't up to it like they used to be. Interestingly, doing 20 minutes of HIIT (hill sprints, box jumps and variations of burpees) seemed to have been just as effective, although I do an Insanity session when I have the extra time.
That stated, I agree that changing diet is paramount.
-
The problem with these programmes or the miss selling/use of them is that they are not meant to be used for a long period of time (including HIIT). People see them advertised and think this how you should train all the time, its not. This type of training draws from the well too many times so using over a sustained period will make you sick and injured. A great analogy is to train most of the time as if you are walking for a park bench i.e. 5 reps or less for 5 sets or less easy strength, never going near max and occasionally once or twice a year out of season run for a bus bench (Dan John) i.e. HIIT. Also you should have a good strength grounding before doing HIIT to ensure your ligaments and tendons can handle it, otherwise injury occurs. Tailor your training to cricket, in a game how often do you go all out for 20 mins, never....but how often do you use explosive movements then rest? All the time.

What really is working for me is doing Yoga for 30 minutes every day. Lot less strenuous than going to a gym and that's what made me wonder how the heck did yoga work faster than anything else.
That's when someone told me that yoga expands your muscles (& therefore burns a lot more fat faster) than working out in a gym with weights (which largely contracts your muscles). Whatever may be the logic, yoga is working for me way faster than anything else did :D

And where did you learn how to do yoga? I toyed with this idea but I'm not sure how to start, do you need to go to a class or can I watch a youtube video?
-
I use a couple of references:
1. The book "Light on Yoga" - this has detailed instructions from the basics to advanced, how to co-ordinate your breath with those postures. Really detailed & I just followed their weekly plan.
2. Yoga.com app (use an android, might be available for IOS as well) - Use this as a reference once in a while.
If you are planning to start off with Yoga, highly recommend the book - Light on Yoga, if a personal trainer is out of reach.

It's working because your spending energy moving and supporting your body through different planes daily. I bet your mobility has greatly improved too!
I train with Kettlebells for the same reason, my go to strength exercise I use pretty much daily is the Turkish get up (it take me through all the planes), its great for all over strength and mobility.
-
Absolutely! my mobility has vastly improved too!

Have you noticed this carry over to cricket?

Yes, I have. Agility of moving while batting has improved greatly.
I now easily face quicker bowlers & feel have a lot more time in hand & not hurried through.
But most importantly, I find my feet automatically moving towards the ball.

Great to hear, I've had the same from my TGU's and mobility drills. After beating myself up with barbell, HIIT, Crossfit etc over the years I've come to realise mobility is key, especially from late 20's on when you start to lose it.
No doubt your balance is improved, but I also think training your mind to focus on holding your position in yoga or a TGU (with a weight above your head in my case) certainly helps focusing on the ball.
-
Yoga sounds great for balance and holding posture at the crease. I think I'll pick up the book you've recommended... In a class environment, I reckon the person behind me would feel rather unfortunate!
-
The key to @cesare_in_success would be practising daily.

I've started a Couch to 5k running programme this evening. Feels like a bit of backward step, since I did the same programme around 10 years ago, and going back 5ish years ago I was running in 10 mile races. Still, have to start (again) somewhere.
I've also started (or restarted) with MyFitnessPal. Username JohnnyFirefly if anyone wants to add me.
Determined to get down from my current weight of 17 stone, hopefully somewhere closer to the 14 stone I weighed before I got married 8 years ago.
-
Ive been on a no carb diet for the past 2 weeks, bar the 16 pints I drunk saturday night and the 2 kebabs! and ive shifted getting on for shifting 11kg, im looking to get back to around 95kg in weight. Being back playing rugby is helping an awful lot and no cricket teas!
-
Been building up brownie points with the missus by going to Yoga classes with her. Really improved my flexibility, especially since I lost the full range of motion in my knee due to 3 ACL Surgeries.
On a side note, the other girls yoga pants are really see through when they bend over...makes for fantastic viewing [For science obviously.]
-
Anyone else got any opinions on yoga? I'm recovering from a side strain and think it might be a good pre-winter gyming option?

Right - time to poke this a little - Did anyone keep up with their weight loss plan?
I joined Slimming World because I am a manly man, also I liked their combo of Low Carb / Low Sugar plan and also that it's quite relaxed on weighing and measuring and all that bollox. Basically it's 'eat plenty of all this, and eat very few of these'.
It's not been easy as I basically like bread, cake and beer - however, you get used to it after a couple of weeks, and the key is to just be organised and make your lunched and breakfasts in advance - also, don't crucify yourself if you have a bad day, just get back on the wagon again.
Anyway, I started at 16st 2lbs and after 2 weeks am down to 15st 8lbs, and I'm aiming for 14st dead. But the side effects are already that I can get into some lairy shirts I couldn't before, and I've started running again without pain in my knees.
This is the first weight loss I've stuck to for more than a week, so I'm going to go for it - has anyone else done slimming world?
ps - One side note, my poos are getting really smelly!!!!!
-
I was 91.5KG at the start of the season and now at 89.1KG with 2 inches off my waist so happy
-
At the start of the season I was around 80kgs. At the end of the season I was about 89kgs... oops! haha I blame it on the awkward eating hours and the excess drinking to forget all of the horrendous performances this year.
But I've given myself 7 weeks to get back down to 80kgs before I go away. Going to start the gym next week and hopefully going to reach the goal
-
WTF is all this kilos bollox??????????? Speak in stones men!!!!!!!!
-
I was pushing 22 stone on the 13th Jan - just dipped under 16 now.
First rugby match in a few years tomorrow, now I know I can fit in the kit!
-
Nice work Jules - 6 stone!! That;s pretty great man. Do you look loads different?
-

Yep - like a new man! I've had people I know walk straight past me.
Although it's given me the batting yips. Just like Andy "The Viking" Fordham...
-
First time in many years, I weighed myself today
17stone!!
Really really not good
No wonder I'm still aching like a beatch after a little net
I'm carrying way too much lard around
I daren't measure my waist
Anyway
No carb/definately no sugar starting now
32 waist is the goal for Xmas
For a start

If you need some diet resources i recommend the below, there is a low carb and fasting link. I've used both over the last 10 years, both work.
Low carb:
http://www.marksdailyapple.com (http://www.marksdailyapple.com).......low carb, I followed thus for a few years, it really works. In fact it worked too well, I had to up carbs, but the theory is solid .
Fast:

This is the best fasting diet I've seen and used. Fasting isn't for everyone but brads programme works.

It's my 6th wedding anniversary today, I'm 35 and walking around at about 17.4, when we got married I was around 16st! I resumed cricket in between being married after having played a decent level as a junior then being in a very nasty car crash when I was 17 (broken vertabrae etc) desperately need to get back to 15-16st to get back to being a lot more mobile but it's hard!!

Clean eating and playing some squash i find it by far the best cardio ive ever done plus when you're as competitive as me and a friend are when we play you never stop!

This was my first season back and I'm at the heaviest I've ever been (18st) and the least fit I've ever been!
Going to be a long long winter to lose the weight I want and to regain some sort of fitness! I'll be netting at least once a week so will have a measure as I'm normally shattered after a net, fleeing better already just by running twice a week and plan on upgrading that and I've already altered my diet and cut out the snacking and other things that I fell into bad habits whilst at uni (beer take out etc) so he weight is coming down already luckily! Here's to being fit enough next season!

Did this diet start after the beer and buffet Friday night 😜😜
-
It had started and that's the first night in weeks that I've drank and eaten loads tbf
-
Cheers Stuey
Will start today, I've read quite a bit on the less intense cardio thing and the 5-2
Makes a lot of sense
I've Gotta reverse and get out of the habit of abusing company expenses
Spent the last ten years eating and drinking whatever I wanted all paid for by work, and most of the time sat on my backside
No wonder I look and feel like crap

Good luck, yeah fad diets and high intensity workouts are the reason people end up back where they started.
-
Yeah, never been a fan of these high intensity type workouts
I've seen too many people suffer injuries etc
The last bloke I spoke to about this, an ex bodybuilder, had stopped all the burpees and whatever, as he said over the last coupla years, most of the original attendees had suffered various injuries etc
He said he'd cut his workouts right back, and was totally focused on sorting his diet, and juicing
He's a similar age to me, but he's suffering a bit now from years of steroids and gh use etc
-
So I'm not normally one to post in this however, 3 weeks ago I started at slimming world and at last nights weigh in I'd lost 18lbs or 1 stone 4 lbs. pretty chuffed with that but determined to keep on going
-
That's really good going, fair play that

Might be a bit nosey, but could you share a bit of info on how you've achieved that weight loss?
I've been on 5.2 for two weeks now, basically cutting down to 2k calories per day and one day of 600 cals only
I feel ok, and can manage it ok, so long term, with cutting out eating crap and booze etc, I should get back to half decent condition
I'm pushing 50 now, and Christ it's all going pear shaped, so I want to start now before health issues crop up.
I've lost half a stone, so I'm really chuffed with that.
But ideally I want a true 32" waist, I'm probably a 38" at the minute,
This might be pushing it a bit, but I feel it's more of how I should be, if that makes sense?
-
The biggest thing I've noticed is to not calorie count. Eat proper food and make it yourself so you know what you're having. DON'T EAT BREAD! It's terrible. Eat as much rice, pasta and potatoes as you like. I'm eating tons of meat.
-
Hmm
Carbs are the killer for me
And obviously sugar
That's what I'm trying to avoid
I think the calorie counting, for me, has highlighted how many calories I was having daily
I must have averaged 4000! If not more, whilst working away, drinking beer etc
I'm surprised I'm not type 2, most of the blokes I work with are!

Breads fine, just eat the right breads in the right amounts at the right times.

Hey Reds - hows this going for you, that sounded like a massive weight loss, I've managed 15lbs in 6 weeks, but I have struggled with it over the last couple of weeks in missing basically bread and beer!! I need to crack into the exercise side of things to speed up the weight loss.
Just wondered how it was going and whether you'd set yourself a target to hit?
-
Hey @FattusCattus
Weigh in last night. Another 3lbs leaves me at 21lb in 4 weeks.
I've not had a beer since starting and I'm running 25-30 miles a week.
The target was 52lbs, so 5 more and I'm half way there.
Keep going mate, you're doing amazing
-
well done, your giving me motivation to shift some weight!
-
So here is my current up date.... photo provided. If I can lose weight, anybody can

-
Cracking effort, wheres the other 2stone coming from, are you considering losing a limb?!
-
congrats great effort
-
Top effort, minus points for liking your own Facebook post though ;)
-
Well done mate!! I'm trying to lose weight at the moment and trying to eat a deficit. been good but took a break today for my daughter's birthday. Back on the wagon tomorrow.
-
Missed a season and a half due to multiple back problems, and couldn't carry on with physically active job, as a result my weight ballooned. Had back surgery 2 months ago, so far so good with recovery. 4 weeks ago I started dieting and light exercise and so far have lost 24lb with which I am chuffed. I started at 22st 3lb so a long long way to go!!!
-
Weigh in again last night. Lost another 2.5lb. Sitting at 28.5lbs after 7 weeks.
I'm away this weekend but planning to still be good but not as strict on myself
-
Cracking effort!
Big inspiration to me, to get off my overweight (No Swearing Please) and shift a bit of lard
-
Another weigh in last night. 3lbs off. Sitting at 31.5lbs in 9 weeks now! Big push for Christmas
-
Last night I hit 2 1/2 stone (35lbs) in my 11th week. Pretty chuffed with my progress, looking forward to smashing it all back on over Christmas haha

Great going mate! Wish I had your motivation.
-
Great work, I'm inching towards the 2 stone mark, need to exercise more but back telling me to go slowly :(
-
Time to join another thread!
So I am knocking the smoking on the vape thread, day 3 and feeling good.
Attempting 'Dry Jan' to give my liver a chance to recover from 10 years of excessive drinking!
Now time to get my body into shape. Not the round shape its currently in!
Looking for some advise and motivation from @FattusCattus and @19reading87 on where to start/how you started.
I normally go well for a week then give up...

If you want to lose the weight, you will. You'll only be cheating yourself :)
Cook fresh food, eat correct and lots of meat, veg and fruit (I don't eat any fruit tho - yuck!!)
-
So.... last night I hit the 3 stone weight loss! I'm delighted! I've got there in 17 weeks :)

great stuff Mark, that's brilliant.
I've started a lot of changes this week too - more exercise and healthier eating. Hoping to drop a stone or two before the new season and keep it going.
I've found My Fitness Pal helps enormously with tracking what I'm eating (which is too much most of the time!)
-
MyFitnessPal is excellent! My wife uses it all the time when she is cooking so I can just copy from her diary. It links to my apple watch too which tracks my heartrate and any workout I do so I have an almost exact calorie breakdown for the day.
-
How's this going for everyone?
Just passed the stone and a half mark since start of Jan with a stone more to go
-
10kg's gone, sadly 29kg's to go
-

not checked but i can almost guarantee i've put on weight since christmas... overtime at work = more money
more money = more food...
I like food. especially sugar. it's a required food group right?
-
Take out is my killer but just forcing myself to cook and move my ass excercising has helped
Feeling fitter and able to do more
-
I love cooking don't get me wrong, my worst downfall is lunches... food van turns up at work, oh i fancy a little extra! Promised myself to cut it all out at the start of the year, which hasn't happened but i go travelling about in the van soon so hopefully that helps
-
Yeh, not updated for a while...
I'm now at 3 stone 5 lbs. I have 2lbs to go till I am at my target :)
-
I just log all my food and excersise with the Fitbit wife purchased so she could challenge me
But to be fair it's working as I still have junk food sometimes but know I have to workout afterwards or before to earn it
-
Is it too late to start trying to lose the "tubbs" nickname by the start of the season?
-
3stone 2lbs gone, another 3 stone to go. Finding time to exercise is a problem, do a physical job, all I want to do when I get home is have a coffee and put my feet up, and its hard to get going again :(
-

Great work @19reading87 you have lost at least half of an @uknsaunders (probably the top half), I am way behind you but heading in the right direction, 1 stone 6lb down, 15lbs to target, but I'll definitely take that.
Have you seen the kerfuffle about Porky lights?

Yes mate! Crazy! Sausage frenzy
-
Soooo last night I reached my target. Life has been ever so stressful the last few weeks but to get this has been a somewhat happier moment. Keep going everybody currently trying to lose weight

nice one mate
how much in total lost?
-
Just thought I'd jump in, I joined slimming world in January as well, and Rejoined the gym. Since doing so I've managed to lose 2 stone, it has helped massively unsurprisingly! Cardio is still not a friend though!
I've got around a stone to go until I've hit my target I set myself, just enjoying being able to do a lot more in life and my self confidence has gone through the roof
-
So having looked back at my recent net videos, I couldn't help but notice I'm a bit of a fat git!
A few things have made me think and enough is enough. In shirt I've cut out all crap food and alcohol, and am making an effort to get off my (No Swearing Please) and move more often!
Hopefully I can sort myself out and shift the spare tyre by the end of the year (or at least deflate it a bit!)
-
That's pretty much what I did cut down on crap but still have the odd take out and started running 3 times a week and walking dog every day
Nearly 2 stone down now just passed the 26lb lost mark
-
I have started 3 times this year! lost a total of 30 lbs, (10lbs a go) and am the same weight I started!
:(
No motivation after week 1!
-
Just past 2 stone mark and completed my first 5k run
30lb down and now onto training for 10k
