Title: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: liscon12 on February 29, 2016, 10:19:54 AM
So I thought I'd kick this thread off with England's new T20 shirt, I'll probably get it but I'm still not 100% sold on England playing in Red.

Pretty much the same as the one they've just finished with...

I don't mind red for T20s as long as the trousers aren't red too, much better with the blue ones.

Also can we all just confirm that this really is India's to lose?

England don't have a chance, but it'll be fun to maybe beat Sri Lanka and other qualifying team. Losses to Saffers and Windies.

just had a look at a different picture. These shirts are pink with studs in the back.

super macho.

Adidas have gone - this is the last shirt we are making for you so have a real minger...!

Bring on some New Balance sanity, please.

Yes India should and probably will win this tournament but I kinda want Pakistan to win on Indian soil just because of the politics over there.

Indias to lose but it's biff and tickle so any team can have a good/bad day and there is little to no room for recovery

Team:

Hales
Roy
Root
Butler
Stokes
Morgan
Ali
Willey
Dawson
Rashid
Plunkett

The 1st 6 overs will be key for me. By all means attack in a positive manner especially as we bat down to number 11...
Keeping the scoreboard ticking over is very important and hopefully the players will use their feet to the spinners rather than trying to sweep or reverse sweep every spinner they face..

The batting order after Morgan at 6 will just be a case of who has been striking the ball far in practice should be next in.

Would also like Root not to feel he needs to compete against butler and stokes in hitting it out of the ground but to just play his own game playing his normal shots.

Also if the opening pair have got to 9 overs then I think butler should be next in and move Root down the order a bit.

Finally, I hope one of the bowlers has learnt to bowl a decent yorker.. But I have been saying that since Darren Gough retired.

Root used Shrey in the UAE before Xmas as well. Looks like he's got 2 deals. Shrey for Asia and Masuri for the Rest of World. Might have something to do with the difference in bounce of sub-continent pitches.

A few remfry's, alex hales using remfry inner, morgans still using slaz inner thigh guard.

The best think i think is how Stokes has tried to cover his up with the NB logo!

I think Mommsen summed it up rather despairingly with the associate nations; how they can improve when they play no cricket?

So looks like none of the warm up games are being showing on tv. Rather watch nz vs England than some associate games played in front of empty stadiums!

Is that the South African Scotsman ?!!???

I do feel for them but then why would I want to pay sky money to see Scotland get smashed vs a weak proper nation?? Bad enough currently with weak full nations!

Of course, if there were a divisional set up for the different formats they'd be playing in leagues and could progress up etc

I really like this pink shirt the Scottish are playing in.

And apart from the fielding(which was poor today at best) I'm quite impressed with Afghanistan.
Look a decent side on the rise.

Ireland keep begging for Test status yet get embarrassed at the World T20 by two amateur sides...

If anyone deserves Test status it's Afghanistan not Ireland

Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: Aussie In England on March 13, 2016, 01:35:03 PM
Ireland are a bunch of bang average players. Most of them tried their luck with England ang flopped. No first class structure should automatically mean no Test status.

Afghanistan went from the lowest group of the continental cup to league 1 with 5 consecutive promotions. That's a side that shows its capable of playing a higher standard
Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20

And yet the same Afghanistan with its professional player system lost to the UAE in the Asia Cup Qualifiers
Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: ProCricketer1982 on March 13, 2016, 02:07:49 PM
6 over game.. What a joke.

Afghan are probably the 'best' associate side currently but I feel for Ireland as they've probably begun the decline as their team peaked a few years ago. Still, there is a place for promotion and relegation in test cricket as zim, bang, wi are bang amateur too

Just look at bang avg burns/voges et all avg boosters recently as evidence

Root probably sponsored by Shrey on the sub-continent. Always goes back to Masuri in England, SA and ANZ. Would be interested to know if that's a personal decision based on perceived protection levels on faster pitches.

Surely 186 was only par on this ground with the dew and the flat wicket? seen plenty of scores of 200 plus chased here. Did hales and Roy bat too slow? 43 of 41 balls combined.
England's net RR has taken a pounding, same old story at WC's.

But what a knock by Gayle! 100 up!

4 samey bowlers in Jordan, Wiley, Topley and Stokes. Need either Plunkett or Finn for raw pace and height.

And Morgan has to trust and have faith in Rash to bowl and not hide him like he did tonight.

Perhaps we should just get everybody else out, and leave Gayle up one end?

we can't get anyone else out !! at the top level we are cannon fodder for high class batsmen. even Hales and Morgan cannot compete with Gayle on the hitting front.. He is an absolutely brilliant player

Enjoyed watching them hide the better spinner and Ali get treated as he should. Funny as.

Jordan, where are his defenders as normal?? 'Good fielder' or not, you need to offer more as fielding is the least required bit over batting or bowling

That was the most composed and focused innings I have seen from Gayle. He played very sensibly and got to 94 of 38-39 balls, he could have smashed the world record, but chose to bat the game out and not leave anything to chance.  He was a joy to watch, shame about the England bowling attack, but as many have said no great surprise. Inexperienced bowling attack mixed with not been good another at this level made this chase pretty comfortable for the Windies team. Ramdin and Bravo gave England a glimmer of hope half way through. Then Gayle dispatched Moen for 3 sixes in a row, which pretty much sealed England's fate in this match. Hopefully England can bounce back and find away to qualify.

Massive game today lads...do we need another batter in(vince) drop jordan and get root to bowl a few?
Or hope to just spin them out? The problem with that is Ali goes the distance every time.
I think we gotta hope theres a bit of swing when we bowl otherwise the seamers will go all over the place

Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: edge on March 18, 2016, 08:13:29 AM
Playing Vince would just result in pointlessly pushing Buttler/Morgan down the order, he's there as backup for Root/openers. Don't need 9 batsmen anyway tbh, it's only 20 overs! Think the batsmen did fine last game, 182 is a decent score - if someone had put a really significant innings in we'd have made 200. I'd still want Plunkett in for Jordan, but as Jordan had pretty good figures that's not gonna change. Dawson could come into contention but not at Mumbai again.

chin up....If we do go out it's Gayle world class innings that done us and I don't believe anyone can bowl to him in that mood unless you pin him underneath the arm pit with genuine pace.

India lose to Pakistan tomorrow and the world champions are out so the qualification is cut throat.

if we get 180 again we could bank on SA bottling it?

I reckon AB will do the damage today!
But on the bright side, if Gayle and AB both end up doing the damage for England, at least it's the two best that will put us out.
Our boys look mainly too inexperienced and not seasoned T20 heads on their shoulders!
I'd be surprised if we win more than 1 match to be honest.

Not sure why we are opening with TWO left arm bowlers?
Surely open with right arm from one end and left arm from the other?

I would love to see England win but the bowlers will not bowl tight enough! Therefore SA will end up with 197-5 and England will go for it and end up 45 or 50 runs short all out.
Any more predictions out there?

I think England have a good case for playing Dawson now looking at new Zealand's success replace one of the 3 seamers. Then looking at bringing plunkett in but too many changes won't be good for the side. Playing 3 spinners is very foreign for England and if they aren't gonna use root like New Zealand do with Williamson then they should have a third spinner it has been proven to work so far. England should experiment bowling the first over with Ali or someone like that something different to bring to the table it's all very predictable and I bet most teams know what England bowling order will be.

That's the difference between England and other sides.

Bad ball go into the stadium.

3 drag downs from SA and England took 5 runs in total from them.....

Agreed, big difference. Root didn't find the boundary

Duminy is dropping short almost every ball, yet Morgan and Root struggling to hit the boundary. Getting contained by the spinners, rather predictable.

And now Morgan's gone...Butler to the rescue?

Plunkett should be our pace bowler plus stokes a load of spinners - this is India!!

As I said, no problem.

I doubt spinners would have made much difference. Both teams played their best spinners and even they went for runs. I guess The pitch was just meant for scores like that.
I think it was more of aggressive batting approach  from both teams and doubt if the same can be repeated on the same pitch.

Good point Buzz. Also history suggests it's a pitch for spinners so why we not playing 3? Morgan bangs on about how talented this side is YET we constantly struggle to set a target so surely in a major tournament you play to your strengths (and that would be chasing)  especially in a must win game.

Relax, it's 2020.. It's cricket just to watch and enjoy regardless as it's so hot and cold. ENgland scored 200+ the other day and people were quick to say how great they were.. this just proves that this type of format is simply hit and miss and we have a lot of hit and miss players so have to expect as many collapses as 'great' performances

As a great allrounder on the test stage, could t20s be a time to rest him?

England won't, we've always liked allrounder, with hales bowling I tests there's days.......... I count our t20 side as 11 batsmen 8 bowlers and a stumper.
Only hales and Roy don't do two things!!

Even billings stumps and bats....

'great all rounder' ????

really?  is he 'great'.. Kallis was great and I hardly think stokes is anything close to kallis

In my opinion great would be under selling Kallis, but then I'd be getting hung up on the chose of word. And although it's what cbf is good at. I'll avoid a petty argumen this time. .

Ben Stokes isn't anyway near great in any format of cricket. His Test record is of a middling all rounder. Average 33 with bat and 38 with ball. Nothing to sing and dance about. His limited overs record is pants in both ODI and T20. Stokes' batting is fine on flat true batting pitches. He has got a clue how to bat when he can't just put his foot down the wicket and slog across the line relentlessly. Had it not been for his brittle back Corey Anderson would be the premier all rounder in all formats.

Great allrounder has to make the team for either batting or bowling and wim matches with either, Kallis never bowled enough to be a serious bowling proposition. Probably the best batsman who could bowl, but if he's an all-round great then Akram or Shaun Pollock are too, for example.

Only 3 genuines who had decent length careers and enough success to be considered great - Sobers, Botham, Khan. All would still have got picked if they miraculously lost their ability to either bat or bowl overnight.

Nigh on 300 test wickets at 30 and 13,000+ runs at 55! I don't understand why Kallis isn't exalted as a legend, his stats more than back it up imo. Is it because he wasn't as "exciting" to watch as Botham et al?
Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: Aussie In England on March 23, 2016, 03:42:13 PM
Richard Hadlee was probably the 'weakest' of the 4 all rounders in the 1980s. Hadlee was by far the best bowler but his batting was considerably below the other three. Khan started off as a rapid pace bowler. Then a back injury made him develop his batting. IIRC he averaged over 50 in the second half of his Test career with the bat. Dev was the only world class fast bowler the Indians had during his career. His stats don't look as impressive as the others but there was a time when India played 3 spinners in any conditions and that left Dev breaking his shoulder carrying the fast bowling burden. Botham was probably the best in true of all rounder but he suffered the most when his powers slid.

Partly because he was bloody boring, yep. Batting I think he's well recognised, but he really didn't bowl that much and would never have got picked as a bowler alone. 290 wickets yes, but in almost 170 tests and only 5 fivefers. Imagine how many someone like Botham would have taken if he'd played that many!

By the way, hope you didn't think my use of "exciting" was sarcasm, Kallis was a bit boring! But he got results! You do make a fair point about number of games played, but surely that's part of the charm? He was good enough to play 160odd tests and hit a century in his last test, Botham's (although great and in my opinion the better all rounder) powers waned a bit before his 100th test and he didn't hit over 51 after '86 or more than 3 wickets after '87.

Ha no, I don't think anyone would call him exciting! True, that many tests is a hell of a good stint for someone who bowls pace, but if he'd been a better bowler and so bowled more overs I don't think he'd have played nearly as many. Not sure what the most tests played by a front line seamer is but there aren't many who've played over a hundred and it's probably even lower for allrounders. Legend of the game for sure, but the great allrounder group will always be a tiny one. Stokes at present is the only player in the world who's even close, if he gets the consistency he'll go down as at least an English great I think.

Excellent. India are losing. Hopefully if they go out then we'll hear a lot less rubbish talked about how wonderful the IPL is!

The disparity of pitches between India games, and non-india games is shocking. Fair to say we know what the "I" in ICC stands for!

Also...this has backfired. I think making slow turners has actually hurt India, as most teams (minus Pakistan) have spinners good enough to exploit those conditions - the bcci has basically been neutralizing india's own batting power.

India had nothing to do with that win in the end. That's just crazy thought process of finishing it in a single ball and paying the price for it!
If Bangladesh had of simply taken a single into a gap then even with a single needed off the last 2 balls.

There was nothing wrong with Kallis' bowling, South Africa's attack simply got better to the point where Kallis' bowling went from necessary to luxury. Steyn, Philander and Morkel destroyed opponents for fun, why would Kallis need to bowl?

i would rather have 5 wickets early on like so the 20 runs a over.

Stokes has taken 5 wickets in 12 games hardly creates pressure like...

Are we suggesting with 3 balls left the 12th man ran out and said "wire transfered throw the game"

Or are we suggesting it was rigged from he begining and both sides are that good at cricket they can get it so close without trying??

What if dhawan had dropped either cAtch? Batsmen had crossed so a draw, would the wire transfer be sent back??

Yes fixing is in this sport, but it's only gonna go downhill if players are accused everytime it doesn't go  perfectly!

Easy to bowl a no ball, only you involved. Throwing a game, you need the batsmen to put it away, and like Bangladesh today, I bad ball doesn't always go for six. Sometimes it goes to hand.

The irony would be if the true story was that the Indian bowler had fixed it to LOSE...did his best to lose (some crap balls in that over), and STILL ended up on the winning side. That would be one unlucky mafia boss.

Hales' excuse for missing the last match must be one of the worst I've heard. Back spasms caused by a soft mattress! Modern cricketers

Finch and hazlewood recalled. This looks like Aussies strongest line up. Warner has to open
Steve smith seems to be the problem by insisting to bat at 3, should be batting at 4 and allow Warner, finch and khawaja in the top 3

From what the commentary was saying, the wicket isn't easy to play on!
If they are right about the wicket, then 150 would have been a decent score and 170 is a excellent one!
But as we saw again SA, you can only see what the wicket is like once both teams have batted!

Track will be a Bunsen

Aus are about as bad at playing spin as England

India are poor at playing spin too!!

Zampa doing well but I suspect India will have more depth in spin. Still, only needs one batsmen to come off and anything can happen
Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: sanredrose on March 26, 2016, 06:57:15 PM
Most likely Eng will face NZ in the semis. They should make sure to bowl Rashid and Moeen sparingly or in the next few days Rashid & Moeen have to learn tricks of spin bowling. NZ has been most clinical in the tournament. Didn't lose even a single game and their bowling/batting/fielding has looked pretty good. It should be a cracker of a game ...
Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: brokenbat on March 27, 2016, 01:24:17 AM
If India lose, all four semi finalists will be non Asian countries. So much for "Asian" conditions - all teams have good spinners now.
Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: petehosk on March 27, 2016, 02:32:05 AM
I imagine that the groundsmen will do all they can to ensure that the wicket suits India as much as possible - this is understandable and I would hope that any other team would expect the same in their home grounds. But Aus team have been good at playing in most conditions in the past.
I would like to see India go though as it's their home competition! But suspect that Australia will be a little too strong on this occasion. But it's T20 so anything is possible!!

Whether Zampa, Agar or Maxwell are rubbish or not is a secondary matter. Guys like Faulkner and Watson have the requisite skill set to account for a weak spin attack.

Rashid and Ali are pie chuckers.

zampa seems decent but nothing above avg really, rashid trumps him but isn't great.  Maxwell + agar = moeen? Nah, those two are substandard bowlers, and moeen is at least bang average

I know it's hard to be honest about your own team but it's quite refreshing not to always over rate players.mimknow it's not a common trait for anyone though, let alone Aussies

And England's seam attack of Willey, Jordan, Stokes & Plunkett have said skills to account for an average spin attack.
Then we also have our other spin bowling options of Root, Hales so if one bowler doesn't hit their lines there are plenty of back up options  ;)

Post by: it's_a_pudding on March 27, 2016, 05:39:45 PM
I get their is a lot of pressure etc but it seems to me on a lot of these slower pitches players forget about the basics and Kohli for me has proven that face look how he hits through the v in comparison to other players and when the ball is over pitches he uses the pace to guide down to 3rd man or backward point. And anything short worked into leg side or the gaps. Simple but effective cricket. And completely agree about Watson sometimes it's a pleasure sitting back watching him drive a cricket ball. De Villiers is a gun and I think we would have seen more of him if he had been skipper and Gayle is too hot and miss for my liking. Root has potential to be great in all 3 formats but in 20/20s the quicker he realises that he doesn't have to overhit the ball he will go well. He needs to be the Williamson of the team.

Great batting by Kohli and fantastic running between the wickets in the last few overs.

Feel sorry for Shane Watson, his warcry after getting Rohit Sharma's wicket was pretty inspiring. Taking Yuvi's catch and troubling Raina with a bouncer, this man brought his entire IPL experience into play and ensures aussie got break throughs. Unfortunately other bowlers couldn't get any wickets. Last match and this man gave his best for the team.

Title: Re: 2016 ICC World Twenty20
Post by: smokem on March 28, 2016, 12:39:38 AM
Not bowling out Zampa out and not using him in those final overs were costly errors in my opinion. Coulter-Nile is just too 2-dimensional for that situation (and in T20), bowling either too short or too full (but no yorkers). The Indian bowlers bowled a much better length - just short of the length - and let the pitch do the rest. The Aussie bowlers failed to find that length in those closing overs.

Australia needs to embrace spin in T20. This has been one of their downfalls in the T20 format. Smith's lack of experience in the T20 format may also have been a factor in those final overs.

But take nothing away from Kohli. What an awesome knock.

That's very true. Yuvrav probably made the game more challenging for the Indians with his bad ankle and hanging around the crease for as long as he did!

That's very true. Yuvrav probably made the game more challenging for the Indians with his bad ankle and hanging around the crease for as long as he did!

It was frustrating to watch Yuvi score 1s when 2s were possible. However when i look back at the innings now, if Yuvraj had got out trying to attack then India would have had a mountain to climb with just Virat & MS. Jadeja & Ashwin are seasonal batsman and i don't think there in any kind of form to pull a big finish. Yuvi scored little better than run a ball. So it might just have been the right thing to do ...

Real culprit for India is Rohit, Dhawan and Raina. Despite starting off decently, these three gifted their wickets trying to play ridiculous shots. Dhoni should come back to his senses and replace Dhawan with Rahane.

Making predictions like that, I assume Dernbach has qualified as a New Zealand resident and will be bowling 4 overs...

Thing is, Eoin Morgan is the best captain England have had for years. Seriously. And when you bat to eleven, it's worth keeping him about.

In terms of limited overs hundreds, he's pretty much up there in England terms too. There's always got to be a bloody scapegoat even when England win a semi final!

Yes - he had his chances given to him but he also certainly made the most of them!
The Windies will be kicking themselves as I'm sure they'd be chasing a few less if they had of taken their chances.
It's nowhere near a safe score either as England proved against SA on the same ground. Anyone's game!!

The mastery Kohli has shown in his t20 batting is up there with the mastery Lara and Tendulkar used to display in limited overs cricket

Perhaps appreciating Kohli's genius would be better advised then praying for his misfortune

What are peoples hopes, wishes, dreams - predictions.

As much as I like to watch him, I hope England get Gayle early, and then chase down a healthy score, to win in the nick of time.

I think we will see mighty performance from Sammy and Bravo, Roy, Stokes and Rashid today,

Difficult to say if Jos was indeed cheating. It looked like he collected the ball with the tip of fingers. With the keeper gloves, i wouldn't be able to differentiate if that was a clean catch or not. If you had noticed, Jos didn't go up as soon as he collected the ball. He seemed to throw up the ball and join the bowlers appeal. If i were in that position, i would just appeal to support my bowler ...

WI seem to have more trouble facing Rashid. Morgan should give Root another over. If Samuels or Bravo try to attack then there is an opportunity for wickets ...

When a keeper takes a genuine catch you just know as they are first to go up. He looked sheepish if yiu watch. Live I couldn't tell but the key and the replays and his face give it away

They were not great deliveries. Keep in mind how tall Braith is - for a normal batsman, they would have been proper length balls. But still, to call Stokes a choker is unfair. Full marks to England for making a game out of a well below par total.

As a neutral, coud not have asked for a more exciting final.

WICB might take a dim view of Sammy's response. However Sammy had the right to express his thoughts and i believe he made a lot of sense. He paused for a few seconds when Nasser asked him to compare the victory from 2012 versus 2016. It goes on to show that a lot of stuff happen in the background. I am quite sure teams like India and England wouldn't have struggled to get their uniforms made until the last minute of a world championship tournament. Given all the odds, WI came out slinging their bats like cannons and made it through to the title.

This series might be the last one to feature Gayle, Sammy, Bravo, Samuels, Fletcher etc as WI players. Good that they got a nice send off ...

what an excellent game of cricket, it had everything. Braithwaite what a player. Makes his own bats I wonder how many international players can say that. You got a feel for Stokes, always felt he was a little arrogant for my liking but an excellent player none the less. It is a shame Braithwaite did not become a part of the forum, would have been a great addition. He handled the pressure like a true legend. Talking of Legends batcrazy was banned from the forum for taking the side of a customer. I believe a few of the admin team didn't take a liking to this and decided to ban him. Seems a shame that certain people can say what ever they like no matter how offensive it maybe, but when some one has a valid point they find themselves getting banned.

You've got to feel for Stokes - any bowler at that level will be thinking 'I'm backing against him hitting four consecutive sixes off me'. In fact, after the first one you'd be thinking he's more likely to screw one up now, then we've got a wicket and a dot ball.
It was fantastic hitting and fair play to the bloke.

You would have thought he wouldn't have bowled four balls in around about the same area though...

Still remarkable how the Windies really are everybody's second team. They got a great reception even after beating India in the semis. And I don't think any other team (other than India of course) would be welcomed like this after winning it all:

Always found most Indians had the Windies as their second side as there have been plenty of players with East Indians roots playing for the Windies. For example Chanderpaul, Sarwan, Ramdin, Ganga, Narine, Rampaul etc

that is not really the reason. its because of the way the Windies play the game (and celebrate). They've always won people over. Most people from the Sub Continent will list Viv Richards, Sobers, Marshall, Ambrose, Lara, Gayle etc as their favorite players.... East Indian decent players don't really feature in that favorites list.

West Indies are just dissapointing! Yes they won the WCT20. Yes they have Talent!

But they dont want to play Test games, only want to play in the T20 Cups for the Monies!
