First test today.
Bancroft gone early. Still seemed to be planting his foot. Can’t help but think pressures on with renegade making runs back in shield cricket.
-
Seen nothing from Bancroft to suggest he will ever be able to cope with a moving ball. Looked out of his depth in Perth and Melbourne
-
Is it just me or is Smith really exaggerating his mannerisms today, drives me mad. It can't be natural, looks forced
-
I think Smith just gets in a zone, and his movements are an extension of his intensity. Probably drives bowlers mad as well but whatever works i guess.
-
Smith the absolute beast! and english folk use to say he won't survive with that technique etc.
marsh plumb LBW but SA have no reviews left

Undone by left arm spin
-
Undone by left arm spin
Don't say that, England will pick Dawson for the next Ashes now.
-
Close of play, Australia 225-5. As they say most days, first session tomorrow will be crucial.
-
350 on the board for AUS - i reckon is a great 1st innings total on that pitch.
5 wickets for Maharaj and Lyon takes 2 wickets in his 1st over!!
-
Mitch marsh batted well and sensibly. But got out trying to moo with the tail.
Nice innings holding 96 though.
Clubbie Lyon with 2 in his first over. Elgar and Amla gone!!
-
All down to AB. DeKock also needs some runs after struggling of late.
-
No wonder AB wants to jack in the Test format. Watching AB against India and now Australia, it's like what Chanderpaul was doing throughout the latter stages of his career.
-
Some shocking reviews in this test.
Philander missed thaylt by inches and only Smith was interested and reviewed.
Gone next ball though.
2 very good bowling attacks, but can’t help but think Australia has the better batting line up.
And yes it pains me to write that.
-
Starc just class with it reversing. AB should’ve teed off earlier - in the end left high and dry
-
Is this a 3 match series?
-
Is this a 3 match series?
No a 4 match test series
-
SA have lot of batting issues at the moment to be able to compete with Aus who are in such form as a team that even the Marsh brothers are scoring :)
- Amla's time seems to be up, hardly scores except in the odd match these days
- De Bruyn doesn't seem test material
- De Kock woefully out of form though showed some signs of recovery today, Klasen might have been better option now..
-
Australia are close to hitting on the right combination, aren't they? Marsh the younger gives their attack balance, and the late career improvements that Marsh the elder and Lyon have made give them great solidity. They still seem to be carrying Bancroft and Khawaja though - if they could get those two slots filled and productive, maybe get a successful back up quick (Behrendorff, surely?) they'd be a pretty awesome side.
-
Berhendorf is made of glass.
Teams always have people in and out of form. Khawaja is a keeper given Handscomb is the next cab and he plays French cricket.
-
I’d swap Bancroft for renshaw and that’s about it.
Khawaja does okay on non turning conditions.
And when it turns they play 2/3 spinners anyway, so o keefe and/or maxwell will come in khawaja anyway
Khawaja averages just under 60 in aid conditions, so he’s always gonna be in the home squads atleast....
-
Sitting here trying to think of other options now, because Uzzie is a major FTB.
Aside from Maxwell, who'd have to bat 5/6...
Hmmm....
...it'll come to me...
-
Just watched the highlights and ABDV just looks a different class to everyone else.
Just like us in Oz the SA lower order are going to have to work out how to play Starc etc... very quickly.
-
Smith falls to left arm spin again.
Lbw to Elgar, hitting middle 3/4 up. Pitched online. Think eh was that shocked at getting out to Elgar he reviewed anyway!!
Bancroft prolonged his test career with a nice fifty before walking passed one.
Aussies still well on top. What’s we reckon? 400/ 450 before start is let loose on them?

There is still ages left in this game and if the Aussies don't get bowled out then you might as well put the game out of sight and declare with a lead of 500.
At the current RR that would be early tomorrow morning, still giving you a day and 3/4 to bowl S.A. out on this pitch.
-
Maharaj is a really good slow left arm spinner. You see the likes of Jadeja, Herath and Al-Hasan whom rely more on angles and pace variations. Whereas Maharaj is bowls with flight and guile. Also gets big turn.
-
South Africa's target will be around 410. I can't see them getting anywhere near that with the current form of their batsman.

Let’s see if they have the bottle to fight it out for a draw then......
I suspect not.. they’ll come out playing shots and lose

You do follow test cricket yeah??
As that’s not how South Africa play. They tend to fight and go hard for a draw if victory isn’t possible.
This game for instance
http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/11287/scorecard/903609/india-vs-south-africa-4th-test/ (http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/11287/scorecard/903609/india-vs-south-africa-4th-test/)
Do you think faf made 10 off 120 balls playing shots?
Or abv 43 of 354 balls?
Or Amla of 25 of 289???

They’ve not done it for a while. No one said they can’t either... still, why let that affect you attacking me
-

Granted there batting line up is poorer currently, but the likes of Elgar, Amla, bavuma and faf tried to stick around against us last summer.
I also remember them fighting for a draw vs New Zealand beginning of last year.
Not attacking you, merely questioning why you’d think a side would attack and get out, that genuinely do fight for a draw?
I personally hope they do fight, but I’m not sure there currently line up can keep the aus attack out if it starts reversing.

I hope they do to. Fight for every ball and not give their wicket away playing shots now the win has gone.
-
SA have absolutely no chance whatsoever :D
I see them being blown away for under 200, pitch is turning and SA are clueless against spin.
An out of form line up coupled with starc and lyon. Just hope AB bats for a bit of time for entertainment
-
2 down already, this will be over today
Amla really struggling of late
-
What do I know eh. Sa a throwing this away.
Where was de Villiers going?? It’s a test, why try to take risky quick singles?
-

Agree.. noting risky in tests.. let alone when saving the game.
Markram as holding Just said needs to stop trying to play shots that are risky on this wicket.. keep it simple and safe .
Poor effort so far at saving the game
-
This Ozzie attack really is quite good!
Seem to have all basis covered.
-
This Aussie team has got Test cricket nailed.
Bat as long as you can slowly without risk to score as many as possible
Take 20 wickets with pace, spin, reverse & no weak links
Repeat.

Hold your horses.... yes this Aussie side are very very good and seem to have a good formula.... but that is nothing new.
This Aussie team have only beaten us at home and started very very well in S.A.

If nailing test match cricket is not winning a test series in the sub continent for godknows how many years, then yes they’ve got it nailed.
-
Awful running by ABDV yes... but would like to know our Aussie Forumites opinion of Lyon chucking the ball on AB and Warners celebration.

Nailed!?!? When they win at home and away vs all opponents then claim to have it nailed. This team is far from a top side really when you look at the less than optimal batting options.
Still, they are winning and beat England so they are light years ahead of the EcB
SA are showing some fight currently at least but can any of the others ?!? Or will they fold
-
Small bit of fight. And the Aussies are getting wound up here.
Starc throwing a proper wobbly.
Did notice Lyon drop the ball, was to busy shaking my head and Warner acting like a mong(has he took lessons from Kohli? )

Did you notice the stamp on AB too (bicep area)..given there was a lot of distance the fact he intentionally goes towards AB suggests intent.

Classy as usual from the Australians.
-

Perhaps “current” Aussie side would be more accurate.
I’m no Aussie-o-phile but they have been lucky that the moon & stars have aligned for them recently
The three quicks fit all for at once (though the Ashes showed the cupboard is bare if one is injured)
Smith best test run scorer in the world (though his frog in a blender style is tremendously aethestically displeasing)
Lyon knows his role and does it with world class aplomb (only Herath is a rival for best test spinner)
Starc is truly special
And even the Marsh without the lovely atomic is getting runs.
They only have the batting quality to score at 270-300 a day instead of 400 of old but their attritional batting is working for them
THIS side hasn’t yet won all over the world for sure - but doesn’t mean I don’t think they’ve fallen on a very good recipe for test cricket

Other than the one or exceptional sides of the past, attritional batting coupled with wicket taking bowlers has always been test cricket.. it’s not a new way.
The difference over the last x years has simply been nations aren’t producing test quality batters but more white ball batters. (And bowlers tbf). Meaning they want to play shots regardless, do t have the defence or Mindset for consistency etc etc.
It’s simply the players aren’t being produced not the tactical side
-
Some good grit here from Markram. Also love seeing stumps flying like they did for Du Plessis
-
DeKock finally in the runs! SA seniors failed but the others have shown some fight
-
Cracking innings from makram. Sa showing some fight that didn’t seem likely at 3 down.
2 massive bumpers from Cummins and makram has taken blwosnon both. He looks in abit do trouble.
Smith continuing this games form on reviews. Shocking.
-
markrams fine innings ends to Mitch marsh.
Just as the pressure starts turning on Australia and smith with 134 needed to win. He’s gone.
So does de kock carry on as normal? Farm strike? Go t20 mode for win?
With 4 wickets needed and a full day left. I’m not sure a draw is ever gonna happens.
-
Great innings by Markrum.
De Kock needs to go to T20 mode because Starc will blow away the tail.... as proved with Philander!
-
Starc destroying this tail once again.
De kock needs to tee off.....
-
Hat trick on for starc......
Think de kock has faced 1 ball since makram went.
-
wow.. Starc is something special, those cutters at pace, length and accuracy, just amazing to watch..
-
Great innings by Markrum.

Think I just called that
-
Wonder what crowd will be like tomorrow?
Could be 1 ball off play.........
-
I would love to see Starcs career stats broken down into against top 6 batters and the bottom 5.
-
Starc doing what he does best, getting rid of the tail.
-
South Africa's senior players should be embarrassed after what Markram, de Kock and to a lesser extent de Bruyn showed. Amla might be a great of the game but he's been a bunny for a while and maybe it's time the bearded wonder was sent to pasture...also the key difference in the two bowling attacks has been the aggression. South Africa's bowlers looked timid, whereas Australia's looked like they can make things happen.
Morkel isn't the same bowler he once was, now his pace has dropped he's not threatening. Philander great with the new ball yet offers nothing once the ball gets old. I think both should be axed should Steyn return for the Test. Plus Ngidi should be in the XI.
As for Starc, no shame in bullying the tailenders. Someone has to bagged them.
-
He does clean the tail up most the time, but has a knack of early wickets too with new ball. And he gives the aggression that the SA attack lacks
-
I would love to see Starcs career stats broken down into against top 6 batters and the bottom 5.
I can't do top 6 Vs bottom 5, but I did see this earlier
% of top order wickets (1-3) - 35.2%
% of middle order wickets (4-7) 34.1%
% of tail end wickets (8-11) 30.7%
I think those of you who say "Starc only gets tail end wickets" should pay more attention when he bowls at the top order... ;)
-
A scandal couldn't happen to a nicer team... :D
(https://s14.postimg.org/j68jqrlpt/Screenshot_2018-03-05-01-07-27.png)
-
Warner restrained from getting his hands on the DeKock :D
Funny how boards manage to leak these images or hide them like they did with jimmy - trent bridge wasn’t it
-
Warner being on the thick and mentally retarded side, is his pathetic behaviour any surprise?
-

Will be interesting how this comes out in the wash...
-
The man's an embarrassment to the sport, unfortunately. The Australians have always tried to defend nonsense like that runout celebration with something like 'oh we play hard on the field' but when something like that emerges it's pretty clear being a (No Swearing Please) doesn't stop when you get off the pitch. Not the only offenders these days either sadly, would be nice if the ICC decided to stamp it out but won't be crossing my fingers.
-
Warner smashes all the windows in his glasshouse himself again
And his wife who also piled in over the Ben Stokes affair. I’m sure there’s most of us thinking Stokes did something he regrets, whether he is punished by the courts is yet to be seen
But having this midget taking the moral high ground over that incident beggars belief
!
-
He's got serious little man syndrome
-
I believe he has talked about a career in politics when he finishes playing
I'll just leave you with that.
-
Warner doesnt have too much between the ears, but being the way he is, i'd say he is happy to cop as much as he serves out and De Kock must have said something to set him off like that. Not any good pretending any of us know what has gone on, so best put your pitchforks and torches away for now.
As for embarrassment to the sport, well It's not like the he is on cctv footage beating someone senseless in public..not that a professional athlete would ever do that in this day and age..
As for the cricket, some great fight from the saffas in their second innings, but this Australian line up looks to be a bit beyond them, genuine concerns for them when a few of the underperforming big boys of that side decide to call ot a day, which on current form seems sooner rather than later.
-

Throughout the footage De Kock is completely non-confrontational, Warner is screaming at him and having to be restrained. No doubt things have probably been said before Warner lost his rag, but your point is? That didn't wash as an excuse in primary school, it shouldn't in adult life either. Also doubt Aiden Markram was firing shots before Warner started yelling obscenities at him during play, or AB before Lyon started throwing the ball at him.
-
Looks like another storm in a teacup incident. But when you pair it with the run out incident and Warners history and the way he generally carries on all the time, it becomes tiresome. The guys talented, but he does nothing for his own or his teams popularity. We don't know what's been said, but on that video evidence he seemed to be doing all the talking and getting wound up whilst de kock made his way to changing rooms, and the fact that he's the only one kicking off as the aussies restrain him doesn't look great either, some vice captain
-
As for embarrassment to the sport, well It's not like the he is on cctv footage beating someone senseless in public..not that a professional athlete would ever do that in this day and age..
He would have been on CCTV trying to punch the hell out of at least one saffa had a few of his teammates not forceabably held him back and bundled him into the changing rooms! So open your eyes!
There was no excuse for Stokes behaviour! But he wasn't in his cricketing whites representing his Country when he was throwing a punch. Whereas the mouthy midget was in full whites and where I grew up, I recognise when someone is well and truely up for a punchup!
Just as well his teammates help him back as it looks very much like he would have done something he regrestted!!
-
Best thing about the video is security guard Khawaja just laughing
-
Actually no, it's Faf walking out with a towel on
-

Think you are forgetting Warner punched joe root in a night club but forgetting that and let’s say de kock said something about his wife....
Well Jonny Bairstow did not retaliate on England duty when Warner and the rest of this despicable Australian team sledged him about his dads suicide
It was that that upset the England team on the recent tour
-
Was that Bairstow thing actually proven? I'm all for giving the Aussies grief but that just seemed to come out of nowhere.
-

I really hope that wasn't true! If it was then they would deserve an absolute ban from humanity!
I really can't imagine that any professional sportsman could be capable of something like that so I think we need to dismiss that unless proven.
-

Well im glad you can see into alernate futures, any lotto numbers? There's a huge difference between verbal and physical, you can't just assume warner would have hit him.

No way defend the Lyon act, that was senseless and pretty out of character, im sure he will cop it on the chin and not do anything of the sort again. My point was that we will have to wait and see why warner was so angry.

Haven't forgotten the warner incident at all, a drunken shirt front is however quite different than beating a defenceless person down in the street.
Where is the credible proof that any of this Bairstow sledging ever happened? I pray that nothing of the sort was said, and i'd trust that players would have enough training and understanding in socially relevant and particularly sensitive issues such as that. I dont buy for a second that something like that could be swept under the rug.
Not for one second have i said warner is a smart person or a good person, just that there would have to be a reason why he blew up and i'd like to know what it is before i judge him on this particular incident. His verbals were ugly and i certainly dont agree or condone them, but who hasnt done or said something in the midst of emotion and an adrenaline rush that wouldn't look silly if replayed time and time again?
Warner is an idiot, but he helps put bums on seats, and there is no test cricket without bums on seats.
-

There’s been no bums on seats during this test even with warner involved!

Anyone commenting on this thread (the Warner/QDK incident) has to read the below link..... has comments from both Smith and Du Plessis on what actually happened, Plus Graeme Smith about hearing stuff through the stump mic when commentating!
Apparently stuff getting very personal on both sides and QDK said something about Warner's wife (according to Smith) but only in retaliation to a lot of abuse beforehand etc..

If that’s true a long ban should happen. Sadly given the verbals around in the game now it probably is true. People literally can’t comtrol themselves
All this yet again should call into focus the need to ban sledging. Simply no need for it.. be professional ffs
It’s obvious now that no one can control themselves so just ban it totally and turn up the stump mics to catch anything said

Turn the stump mics up and allow you to press the red button to add it to your commentary would love to hear it... similar to when they turned up BMac’s mic for an over in the BBL that insight into the game made you appreciate the pro game so, so much more.
-
Turning the stump mics up would certainly enlighten us to what the Aussies deem as acceptable verbals and would definitely be entertaining. The stairwell video has certainly taken the attention away from the actual cricket.
As a South African cricket supporter, Markram's batting display was very encouraging. He got into a tangle at times with the short ball but he is a bright prospect. De Bruyn also showed glimpses of what he produced this season in some domestic games. Maharaj continues to impress. Big Vern, despite all his critics still makes a contribution with the ball. De Kock getting into the runs is great. But with all that said, it all hasn't come together yet, and against the Aussies we will continue to struggle.
Starc bowled superbly to cause the collapses and Smith looks like he is about to get a big score every time he is at the crease. Let's hope the series will be competitive.

Have to hand it to SA they showed some real fight! Markram looks extremely composed, and youve certainly found a good one in maharaj. I think the difference between the two sides lies in the relentless aussie bowling attack who just dont stop coming, mitch marsh probably being the only bowler there who doesnt look like taking a bag full every time he bowls. But from the looks of this test, we are in for a marvelous series.

I know Oz is generally a bit rougher round the edges than Europe, but is a couple of blokes swinging a wine bottle at people really considered a defenceless target?
-

Certainly not, but when he was on the ground unconcious I would consider him defenceless and had Stokes stopped there I doubt it would have been the story it has been, and having just returned from a few months in Europe, I'm not sure i'd agree with you on that first point either :D but thata a discussion for another time and place

I think you need to watch the video again... Hales was the one kicking the bloke on the ground with severity.
Stokes kept hitting the bloke when he was stood up..
Fighting (unlicenced) is not required by any human being against another human or animal however IMO if you instigate anything that is breaking the law or is derogatory/demeaning towards a human/animal then you deserve what you get... If not then that's how bullies and corrupt people start to be the norm in society.
The saying " reap what you sow" is quite apt...

If that’s true a long ban should happen. Sadly given the verbals around in the game now it probably is true. People literally can’t comtrol themselves
All this yet again should call into focus the need to ban sledging. Simply no need for it.. be professional ffs
It’s obvious now that no one can control themselves so just ban it totally and turn up the stump mics to catch anything said
Aussie logic:
Comments about an Australian players wife = out of order
Comments about a non Australian players dad committing suicide = ok

Both Warner and QDK charged.

If Warner is banned for 1 game, who opens the batting for Aus
-

The umpires/ICC have bottled it basically. The are saying they heard nothing on the pitch which is ridiculous.
QDK gets a level 1 charge which will probably mean a fine and maybe a de-merit point.
Warner gets a level 2 charge which can be up to 4 de-merit points which means a 1 match ban. So it will be interesting what he gets.
Also as a cricketing point Handscomb is AUS spare batter so if Warner does get a 1 match ban then a presume S.Marsh has to open and Handscomb bats 5.

Or Paine opens, Handscomb comes in six and Mitch at seven?

So if the umpires bottle it and have nothing to report, the ban is being backed up by the video evidence surely. So back to my point, De Kock in the video does nothing wrong

From what i have read I don't think S.A. are actually disputing that QDK said something to Warner, it is all about why he said it etc... So he was always going to get some sort of charge.
-
Lock them both in a room and let them sort it out, at least one of them will be a lot quieter in the future.
-
Aaaaaaand there you have it. If you give it out, expect to get it back

Oh it did, I just have to play along in my own sarcy way.
Saffers will go in on Warner now, it's going to be fun

If the wife stuff is indeed true is the obvious thing that QDK replied implying what exactly Mrs Warner might be sooking?

According to one Victorian (the state not the era) I met after the boxing day test it wasn't just the one all black
-
An ICC hearing is genius from QdK - nothing more humiliating than the dry re-reading of insults in a tribunal.
Culminating in comments relating to Warner that I’m sure he doesn’t want broadcast to a wider audience - i hope Davey is in attendance.
-
What's a 'sook'?
-
What's a 'sook'?
Someone who is soft timid easily upset a crybaby.

Someone who is soft timid easily upset a crybaby.
Would this apply to someone who dishes it out, but can't take insults/banter/sledging, when it is returned?
Phil Hughes' memorial service seems a long time ago (admittedly under a different captain; Clarke, but his leadership didn't seem to reduce the sledging for long). I really don't think it has a part in the game - always gets pushed too far.
I could rant on...
-
Warner basically reaps what he has long sown.
-
Been a long time coming but if you've got a big enough gob to give it out then you need to learn to take it in return, speaking from experience anyway
-
Exactly.
-
What I'm trying to gather is Warner wanted fisticuffs with de Kock, when the latter had a bat in his close proximity?
As for Warner's wife, she's dog rough. Warner being the dog mouth. They suit each other

Yeah, that's your opinion but its still his wife. So of course he's not going to stand for somebody talking trash about her.

Warner breaks silence on what was said......... i wonder if anyone from SA is going to do the same...
It's going to kick off in the 2nd Test!!

Haha best thing you've ever come up with Ger! Personally I think she's quite tasty but as the lyricist and poet Andre Young once remarked - you cannot make a ho a housewife
I like to think that although this Warner breakdown may have occurred in South Africa, it was a culmination of 5 Test Matches in front of the Barmy Army that has pushed him to tipping point. Maybe if the guy was less of a (No Swearing Please) he wouldn't cop so much
-
So..
Calling a player names or commenting about him isn’t deemed personal but insulting someone who isn’t there is?!?! Bizarre morals

Apparently warner was mouthing off about qdk sister too!
Sisters are ok to sledge about but not wives he is an effing moron!
-
To marry somebody who has such a public history means you're either very strong or you're not the brightest. Looks like the latter is true for both Mr and Mrs Warner.
-
Australia have control of 'the line', and it moves where they wish, how do the rest of the world not understand? (a clue - if you're not from Australia you're on the wrong side of it)
Not a terribly smart interview to give, now every cricket side in the world knows exactly what to say to make Warner completely lose his (No Swearing Please)! Couple of quick chirps from short leg asking Davey what Sonny Bill tastes like and suddenly Australia need a new opener/vc for the rest of the series. Wonder how the next test will go...

Warner and the rest of the Aussies crossed the line in the ashes,I've already posted what was said, now it goes too far again and Warner goes to the press.
England said nothing during the ashes only what is said on the field stays there.
I'm afraid thou, as others have said, this is a race to the bottom....with the Aussie management coming out in support of this clown someone somewhere has to take a stand .me personally I would had far more power to the umpires in the short term to try to address the problem.
It really is a blight on the game and I'm not talking about not playing hard competitive cricket, quite a few of us do, or have done in my case.
We see it in the ameteur game and it's definitely getting worse.

Umpires don’t have the bottle to call it out
Also, why is sledging regarded as being hard and competitive ?? Isn’t playing hard and competitive a inner trait ?? Not who goes and shouts the most ?
-
Umpires don't really have the power now to call it out quite right, they normally have a word with the captain if it's getting out of hand.
I think myself cricket is getting more like football, the money is greater, the stakes are higher and that's like a booster for some of the behaviour we see today.
Remember the Clarke comment about breaking Andersons arm? We know both sides give it out especially Anderson, but that was over the line.
In our league cricket the behaviour in Middlesex is now so bad red cards have been introduced, if a players gets one, the captain automatically gets one too, so, say 3 match ban for the offender, same for the captain-this Is fairly new in our league.
And yes, the very best players in my time watching test cricket, didn't say much...Warne and Waugh and Anderson the exception..Most of the West Indies I watched as a kid said bugger all, Lara didn't say much,Tendulkar even less.
I don't think myself it can or will be stamped out totally, but something has to be done for the long term game I totally agree with you.
If a Captain was sent off in a test match for example, at say 1pm so the rest of the day(fielding) you played with 10...would the problem of excessive personal sledging by phased out?
It's an idea....it might not work. Those that run the game need to come up with something most of us would agree.
Really....the game is being harmed and the ameteur game will pay the price as well.

I’d say that law 42 gives them all the power they need
42.2 Level 1 offences and action by umpires
42.2.1 Any of the following actions by a player shall constitute a Level 1 offence:
- wilfully mistreating any part of the cricket ground, equipment or implements used in the match
- showing dissent at an umpire’s decision by word or action
- using language that, in the circumstances, is obscene, offensive or insulting
- making an obscene gesture
- appealing excessively
Given a umpire can use the ‘in my opinion’.. he could literally shut all verbals down . Especially as you could argue that commenting on someone’s personality, body etc is actually an insult... etc etc
-

Good point, but this needs to be recognised and acknowledged by all concerned. In order for the umpires, (particularly at amateur level), to be confident to uphold this element of the Law, they must be seen to be backed by the various boards/ leagues etc very clearly. All umpires should be stepping in (similar threshold - not easy to define) and a very clear statement issued to all players before a series/ season that this is to be the case.

This is exactly why one should not announce retirement plans before a series. Quite embarrassing to be dropped in your confirmed last series.

Bancroft must be looking over his shoulder. Renshaw scored his third shield hundred of the season today.
-
Comedy o'clock when Khawaja has to bat anywhere outside the flat dead pitches of Australia. Yet another failure. Can't play the moving ball or the spinning ball
-
Great ball from Ngidi
-
Philander is incredible, sometimes moving it so much that people can't even edge it to get caught behind though. Great bowler, and a good bat too.

Another wasted review from SA! That’s a shocked

Don’t think smith liked rabada’s celebration there. The irony!
Another poor review - this time from smith

Third for Rabada Australia crumbling

Imagine how good Rabada would be if he had a Brain between those ears! Some serious bowling, but after this last week, that Smith send off was pure stupidity, might be in trouble with his record.

I wonder why Rabada would act in that way? Sure the fair playing, non sledging Aussies wouldn't have been winding him or his team mates up would they. :o

Rabada cleaned up Cummins first ball after Tea. Australia in tatters and Rabada on a hat trick

I'm guessing it's because much like david warner, he is an idiot ..an extremely talented idiot.
I'm sure the fair playing non sledging Saffas were very disappointed in Rabada because they are innocent in all things and this is the first time Rabada has ever done anything like that and its completely out of character. Please watch your step when you decide to get off that high horse.
To the actual cricket, what a day, thought Australias work in the first session was brilliant, but south africa were awesome in that second session and really wrestled the game back. Khawaja needs to be dropped and not looked at again for a few years. Genuniely rubbish outside of Australia. Good fight from Paine, another agonising reminder of what Australia has lost through all his years of injury!, he did well to post some sort of total but the Aussies will have to bowl out of their skins tomorrow to stay in this game!
-
Anyone actually watching who'd care to comment on the Rabada incident? All the clips I could find on twitter showed absolutely nothing remarkable, accidental brush at worst?
-

It wasn't accidental but it's one of those situations where both men pretend to be tough by playing a game of chicken with someone they pretend they haven't seen.

Think there were a few words too. But the host broadcaster choose not to show much of it. Smith did indicate to the umpires that rabada shouldered him

Lol... "Two wrongs don't make a right" However there is nothing worse in sport when a team or an individual cannot take a verbal abuse or ridicule that them themselves have constantly given to the opposition..
Perhaps its indicative of their culture but it doesn't excuse what is a poor example of human behavior to another...
Now back to watching the worlds best all rounder and boxer..😄
-
KG Rabada charged with a level 2 offence. He is contesting the charge. If he fails with his appeal, it's a two Test ban and Rabada scratched from the series. For a lad who's parents are doctors, he ain't half clever
-
The problem Rababa has is that he seems to bowl so much better when he is fired up but then eventually he loses it in one form or another!
The challenge of the charge is just simply a 'why not', hedge your bets scenario. What's the worse that can happen - he misses the rest of the series, oh that was going to happen anyway!
-
The aussies have it reversing a bigg! SA went nowhere in the lunch time session - it may cost them
But it's AB time - should be a good contest
-
Convinced that AB has become a better player after his break from test cricket. He's looked comfortable with the ball reversing a mile.
53 off 63
Needs DeKock to stick with him
-
That's some nut from Garry to remove du Kock
-
Quite. He's been somewhat underbowled today.
-
A nice little partnership between AB and Phillander to end the day.
-
I don't care what the rankings say or what x y z averages, de Villiers is the best batsman in the world. He's different gravy.

Tend to agree - he reminds me of Barry Richards, in that you often feel that he will get out when he has run out of ways to do stuff noone else can and not before. He and Bairstow are the only players in world cricket who always look like they are batting on their own personal pitches rather than the one everyone else is playing on, and that is something very different to the run hungry like of Kohli, Smith, Pujara etc.
-

Bairstow???? Having a laugh mate
Nope, stating the truth.

You can add Gary Ballance to your list too.
He usually looks like everyone else is batting on a shirtfront and he's in an onion field.
-
When de Villiers is batting it's reminiscent of a peak Michael Jordan or Ayrton Senna. It's like a different level of greatness.
Smith, Kohli, Root and Williamson are all very much great but for my money de Villiers is a level above. Again feel free to disagree but the game will be much poorer when he departs.
-
I think I get that vibe from De Villiers and Kohli, more from how stylish they are in the middle too.
Root and Williamson look pretty but conventional, Smith looks like a spaghetti man playing cricket... but Kohli and De Villiers look like cricket's Maradona/Pele equivalents at the moment. Great to watch.
-
de Villiers is better. Kohli plays for stats imo
It is AB's record outside of his home conditions which makes him the better player in my opinion. Kohli's record is heavily distorted by his record at home on flat decks.
-
But what about Kohli’s record on determining the outcome of a game.?
-

Is there a comparative statistic out there that compares batsmen to others like this? Please share.

Is there a comparative statistic out there that compares batsmen to others like this? Please share.
You mean like the number of hundreds in run chases he gets, or his average?
Or pretty much any other batting statistic!
The naysayers will get to see in summer quite how special Kohli is.
-
I said previously I'm not overly concerned with numbers and averages, but Kohli in England in a bunny.
-
I said previously I'm not overly concerned with numbers and averages, but Kohli in England in a bunny.
Let’s hope so!!
Although I’ve got Friday at Edgbaston in the Eric Hollies tickets for the England India test Kohli Ton there and I reckon the roof would come off!
-
I said previously I'm not overly concerned with numbers and averages, but Kohli in England in a bunny.
I think Kholi will be very motivated to do well over here because he knows some great Indian players have seen runs in English conditions as the pinnacle
Also the series could be much closer than previous ones have been
kholi knows his history he will want to be up there with Sachin and Dravid(the two best I've seen).
Whether he is or could be as good as those two is up for argument I suppose :)
I think he is a fabulous player myself
-
I said previously I'm not overly concerned with numbers and averages, but Kohli in England in a bunny.
It all depends on the pitches we give India. If we leave some grass on them then I don't think Kohli will do that well as I still think he is vulnerable to the moving ball.
However lets not forget we have seen some very ordinary flat wickets in recent times at Lord's and The Oval. Where I think Kohli could really fill his boots.
I also don't think you can underestimate that he will have 6 white ball games before the test series to get used to things better.
-
Even if Kohli fails in England again, he will still be a good player regardless in years to come. He himself does not want to be compared to Sachin, as they have played in different eras. Secondly, scoring 100s is not easy irrespective of the pitches made in India or made for India. Its just talent and god has gracefully given him that. Hope he continues to do well and I am 100% sure he does not play for records. I felt Sachin did, just my opinion.
-
Perfect morning for SA so far. The tail also getting some important runs alongside AB
Big lead already with the Aussies looking deflated
-
Lead of 139...that was some knock by AB. He really is getting better with age. Can’t recall him being in trouble much or playing and missing
Also showing his class by not complaining to the umps about the Aussies bowling down the leg side - can you imagine smith, Kohli or root in that situation. They’d be all over the umpires moaning
-
Smith and kholi for me are the two best batsman in the world for me by a long way. Abv is quality but Smith turned himself into the best batsman of his generation from being a leg spinner who bats at 7 or 8 for NSW. Kholi you cannot just say plays for himself last ok as some have said the run chases he always orcastrates. Funny I always want batters to Lay for themself you tend to get the best out of them too.
Kholi wins a serious amount of games with that singlemindedness thirst for runs
-

The last one Hazelwood bowled was ridiculous, the leniency for wides in test cricket is beyond a joke

Biggest fan of AB and love watching him back but you could argue when the pressure is on I.e world cup’s, knock out games and 4th innings chases he doesn’t have the bottle. Can’t remember too many high pressure finals and chases where AB’s played a match winning knock.
Kohli, smith and KW have done that for their respective sides
-
South Africa don't make it to the finals, that's why
-
Left arm spin the key to get smith out clearly.

how woudl that work then? initially thought it would be to dry the ball, but they are allowed cloths and can use their clothing anyway? is the bandage and strapping more abrasive?

I thought it would be fine having strapping on otherwise the umpires would just step in and not allow him to rough the ball up.

Ban Warner for life. He is a massive doos*

Faf and co would know all the tricks of the trade anyway. So I’m sure it would help.
A little less obvious than using a zip like faf did
Pretty sure the SA are playing mind games - revenge for their last tour in Aus. Using the Aussie tactic of getting the local press to barrage them off the field
-

Never know what you can hide in the strapping/ tape ... I'm not saying you could hide small amount of sandpaper or anything... ;)

Mind games...don't see DWarner cheating.

Sorry but Smith isn't 'the best batsman of his generation'. There's other cricket besides Test cricket and his odi record is modest compared to Kohli, de Villiers and Root. He's not exactly outstanding at t20 either.
Smith is a hand eye coordination player, when they slow down we'll see how good he really is. Guys like Sehwag, Pietersen and more recently Amla showing it gets harder with age.
Smith is fantastic, but will he end up averaging 60+? Not for me.

Did Bairstow headbutt stuart as the aussies claimed :D
-
I wonder if anyone has ever got a 10 wicket haul and a ban in the same game :( :o
S.A. are really going to miss Rababa if it happens
-
Did Bairstow headbutt stuart as the aussies claimed :D
If he did, he goes up in my estimation! :D
-
Rabada 28 Tests already taken 10+ wickets in a match four times.
-
Mitch with an awful drop. Who puts an allrounder in at slip?
-
Rabada lands yet another ICC charge. Level 1 for his send off to Warner. Coupled with the likely level 2 for the Smith incident, his goose is cooked
-

Kallis, Flintoff & Stokes... ???

DeVilliers making sure to break the back of this small chase early.
-
Good win for the Saffas
Rabada immense, although has won himself a two game rest... big loss for the rest of the series.
-
Coupled with what Buzz posted, Rabada also received another demerit point for screaming in Warner's face. He closing in on another 3 match suspension on up of his current two match ban. Absolute clownage
-
Dale Steyn also ruled out of the third Test. The Saffers down to just Philander, Ngidi and Morkel
-
'just' :)
-
i am going to throw this out there.....
i know what Rabada did was stupid in essentially shouting in Warner's face when celebrating getting him out etc.... this has got him written up for another de-merit point.
My question is...... is Rabada's celebration any worse than Warner's - when he ran out ABDV (in the 1st Test)?? Warner wasn't given any points, not even a talking to, but because Rabada was the bowler it is judged as a 'send off' and therefore a lot worse.
-

You're damn right
-
Rabada out of the test series but he's got 48 hours to appeal the decision if he wants to.
-
Agree completely with the above, also Rabada got demerit points last year for telling a batsman to eff off - Mitch Marsh gives it 'f* you c*' to Rabada and that's fine? Bizarre.
-
Good win for the Saffas

Possibly cost SA the series missing the next two tests.
However I do think it's unfair on the bowlers, Rabada reaction was no different to Warner with the run out but it's viewed in a different way as well as Marsh clearly using foul and obscene language directed at another player and that's ok. I understand the joy in getting Warner out given the goings on on the first test but surly just a smile and a wink would have been enough to letWarner know that he is a (No Swearing Please)
-
If you watch the rabada Warner incident, it looks as though he didn't swear or abuse Warner, barely even looked at him, so with that in mind how is that any worse than Warner run out incident, he was clearly getting stuck into Markram
-
Pathetic bit of double standards from the match referees. I’ve pretty much watched the likes of starc, Anderson, Warner and Kohli fully abuse batsmen when they get out. Kohli and Warner pretty much doing it every single game.
-
Just seen the highlights. Such a shame that the ICC seem to be desperate to gag Rabada.
Test cricket will be poorer without him fired up and charging in!
-
Just seen the highlights. Such a shame that the ICC seem to be desperate to gag Rabada.

That's exactly it.
Vaughan was making this point on Twitter. Test Cricket is struggling at the moment and the ICC are banning their best commodities.
Would it have happened if it was a T20i?
-
For me, that type of action and aggression is why I watch the game, is the highest level of our sport and passions are high.
-
If Rabada didn’t act like a brainless child, he wouldn’t get banned. He only has himself to blame - he knows the rules and that it’s a highly charged series. Just because he’s a good bowler shouldn’t absolve him.
Fluff du Plessis is also a master of righteous indignation.
-
And, once again, Vaughan proves himself an idiot.
-
No need for a send off.. no need to verbalise things.. Just get on with the game.
Rabada has history and just this game has been banned.. so to do it again is brainless. You can be aggressive and competitive without doing this stuff.. it does t make you more competitive just because you gob off .. that’s just the excuse people use
-
Mitchell Marsh was fined 20pc of his match fee.
-
Mitchell Marsh was fined 20pc of his match fee.
They earn so much it’s menaingless though sadly
-
Screaming in people's faces when they're out = something not wanted in cricket, hard to complain about getting disciplined for doing it. Just wish the ICC/match referees had the balls to set some proper rules and then apply them to everyone.
Re. Mitchell Marsh, good!
-
Sorry but the blame is squarely with Rabada. Once bitten twice shy, yet within 15 months or so he's piling up the ICC charges like the are a fad item. I'm all for bowlers being aggressive and the odd word here and there. But Rabada has a chap called Steyn whom is pretty aggressive. Steyn let the ball do the talking not his mouth. Rabada would be best advised to be more like Steyn than acting little a small toddler. Great cricketers need to have respect for the game.
-

Not in the sense of the argument above that he got away Scott free but Rabada has been unfairly treated.
-

It's a bad tempered series and whilst I don't like 'send offs' in the game quite what the difference is between a fielder personally abusing a batsman and a bowler doing is beyond me, one seems acceptable and one not.
I do wonder with sledging/behaviour getting worse and the game being so high profile these days whether the TV companies and/or sponsors who will eventually call the shots and set the agenda.
In modern day sport, the sponsors seem to be the most powerful.
-
I read that Rabada receiving demerit points is due to him already being charged with similar offences. IIRC correctly the send off to Stokes?
Whereas Warner and Marsh don't currently have any charges on the ledgers.
Either way Rabada needs to reign it in.
-
Don't want to be racist but the asian umpires such as Dharmasena and Ravi seem to be more intimidated into selective responses by the Aussies.
They are like rabbits next to wolves.

The way he has been bowling he doesn’t need to be carrying on like that

Always the way - if the Aussies do it, its "playing the game good and hard" if anyone dares give them some back they sook like babies (for David WArner, I'll raise you Glenn McGrath's classic with Sarwan!)
-
I think send-offs are generally stupid but yeah, the inconsistent (selective might be a better word) enforcement of the rules is a joke.
-
I think send-offs are generally stupid but yeah, the inconsistent (selective might be a better word) enforcement of the rules is a joke.
I wouldn't even mind that so much if the Aussies weren't simultaneously the worst culprits and the biggest sooks about it!
-
It does seem like the mighty midget and friends do get away with more gobbing off!
But it's not the Aussies fault! Any players would do what they can to get under the oppositions skin and get the upper hand! If they are not pulled up about it, then they will carry on pushing!!
It is up to the Umpires. etc to get this under control and apply identical rules to both teams and all players on those teams!
Same as kids really! Let them get away with things over and over without punishing them, then you can't blames them for doing it! It is up to "those in charge" to set the limits and Police them!!
-
Also, it's all subjective, one man's playful banter is another's offensive insult. Can imagine it would be very hard to determine exactly where you draw the line.
Personally I can't imagine much someone could say to me to make me lose my rag, but in general there has to be a common sense application of basic decency.
-
Set a precedent, get the test captains to agree to it, but then train the umpires the use common sense in each situation.
A bit of needle and banter is acceptable, anything personal isn’t.
For Gods sake there is enough microphone technology available for the 3rd umpire to pick it up anyway- sounds like a few burying their heads.
-
I wouldn't even mind that so much if the Aussies weren't simultaneously the worst culprits and the biggest sooks about it!
Yeah, that stuff really annoys me. Australia (and England tbf) have that habit of acting like utter bellends when they're winning and then moaning like brats when they're losing and/or get a taste of their own medicine. It's 'hard but fair' when they do it but they can't bust out the "Spirit of Cricket" fast enough when other teams give them a bit of aggro.
The ridiculous enforcement of who gets punished and for what is the biggest problem though, fine Rabada gets punished for being a prat with a stupid send off but what about Marsh telling the bowler to eff off after he was dismissed? I want a red button option with no commentary but the stump mics turned up to the max so we can hear just how pathetic the 'banter' is and put an end to this rubbish about the 'spirit of cricket'
-
For Gods sake there is enough microphone technology available for the 3rd umpire to pick it up anyway- sounds like a few burying their heads.
The powers that be don't care what players say, as long as the public doesn't know they said it, because it lets them continue to pretend it's a gentleman's game and that the sledging is witty banter and mind games instead of boorish invectives.
-
Boringggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Rabada appealing the ban. There is a possibility he may play in the third test.
-
Aussies will try anything they think they can get away with to upset the opposition and have done so for years some of it barely legal they are also well aware of what they can get away with with each indidvidual umpire.
-

Ban them, luckily no other sides do this and it's only those horrible Aussie bullies.

Anderson and broad have pretty much got away time after time too

Every team does it, sadly a part of the professional game.
-
Anderson and broad have pretty much got away time after time too
Possibly so - the key difference is, when they have been on the end of it, they've taken it and not grumbled. Sadly, the likes of Warner, Smith and McGrath have not managed the same response.
-
Anderson and broad have pretty much got away time after time too
Anderson has running all over the danger zone in the middle of the pitch for years and years and he's been caught by the umpire what, once?
-
Rabada's appeal took place today. Went on for a reputed 6.30hrs. Decision due within 48hrs. The home side have added Morris and Olivier to the squad. Neither seem likely to be much threat to be honest.
Starc has got another calf issue. Doubtful for the third match

There's also a question mark on Mitch Marsh fitness. If he's out that would be a big blow. He's been in good form since his return but it also unbalances the Aussie line up.

Rabada cleared to play

Good!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/43469166 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/43469166) you guys beat me to it

Rabada cleared to play
The Aussies not happy about it.
I’m sure rabada will love all the compliments the Aussies threw at him at the end of the 2nd test. They were trying to rub it in and enforce how much of a loss he would be to SA. Glad to see it backfired
-
Little princess Stephanie Smith crying just Rabada had his ban rescinded. Thought the Aussies wanted 'to play against the next'. Pull the other one...
-
Smith is bound to be disappointed, he was the one who made a meal out of the apparent shoulder barge, similar to a footballer taking a dive.
Be sure to see plenty more fiery but more controlled send offs from Rabada I'm sure
-
Yes, Smith has not come out of this with any credit, has he?
-
South Africa with two changes for the third match. Bavuma and Morkel back. de Bruyn dropped and Ngidi injured. Australia unchanged again.
-
The drop of Elgar has been crucial. He's made Australia pay with that 100. De Villiers in the runs again. Showing what a class batsman he is.
-
Patrick Cummins is the best of the Australian fast men by a large margin
-
Patrick Cummins is the best of the Australian fast men by a large margin
He's certainly backed that up over the last 6 months
-
Dean Elgar joins the legendary Desmond Haynes as only the second man to carry his bat three times in Test history 141*
-
David Warner being abused by a random old man as he left the field. Lol.
Pat Cummins is a beast!
Rabada ain’t bad either. They were showing South African stats and the amount of wickets he’s taken already is rodocoous(135 in 29!test I think.
If he remains injury free through his career, hell topnsout Africa record lists.
-
Elgar deserves a medal!
-
Not seen much of it really.... only seen brief highlights.... looks close again and could go either way, with the Aussies 150/5.
Warner's 30 off 14 balls at over 200 strike rate looks like it must have been interesting!
-
Well played to Morne Morkel on reaching 300 test wickets.
-
Really solid effort by the big tree Morne Morkel to reach 300 wickets. Elite group for South Africa Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini, Dale Steyn and Morkel. Considering the era he played in South Africa have had a somewhat golden era of seam bowlers. Not many wicket usually to be have when Steyn and Philander are opening the bowling so top effort.
-
Elgar is a truly unpleasant looking batsman, crooked back lift, a hundred with no memorable shots
His kit looks dirty and he probably smells awful
And what we would give to have him in our team(England).
-
Naughty, naughty Cameron Bancroft. I hope that wasn't sandpaper that accidentally stuck to your hand just after you put your hand in your pocket and just before you "polished" the ball...
-
After what I've just seen, I'd love a proper SA protest- refuse to take the field, send the bloody Aussies home.
They need a lesson, and it would make future series pretty exciting.
-
Puts small yellow sandpaper in his pants.
Claims it was his rather large and black sunglasses case.
Big van coming up! But surely the Aussie scant claim they didn’t know he was doing it?

Maybe he was just a little itchy "down there"?

This entire series has shown the Australian team in a pretty poor light, but now Bancroft has really plumbed the depths this time. Has he done this before?
-

Seen suggestions that Lehmann was involved in the cover-up, which would be fantastic. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. All that grandstanding- ends like this :D

WOW! Thanks for that. A real eye-opener.
The worst thing about this is that the Aussies do actually have a genuinely decent bowling attack. So why on Earth are they doing this!!
-
Have I really just seen that on that Twitter feed??
Is there any other explanation for sandpapering the ball other than blatant cheating?

Yes... he has a really itchy crotch
Haha...I don't know how many Pakistani fans there are on this forum but if this was one of theirs the whole country would shout cheat very loud
This is absolutely cheating, this incident could go very big indeed
What an eventful series this has been :)
-
Wow did Bancroft really do that??
Bet the Aussie team are going to claim none of them knew what Bancroft was doing.
Time to blame the crowd too? Or is it fake news :D
-
Any idea why the match referee has not seen the footage and asked for the ball to be changed??
If it was Pakistan the ball would be changed and 5 runs added

You are eventually going to get caught in this day and age when there is so many cameras.

Finally Australia doing what ever other test team are doing.... About time
So you are defending blatent cheating by stating that other people do it?
I can't see that ridiculous defence working!!!! Imagine....well Your Honour, I only burgled the house because it had been burgled 4 times before!!
So I thought that because others were doing it, I would have a go!!
And if you are actually saying "About time" then that is REALLY worrying!
So you should be condoning this...it is cheating. Others may have done this and we should frown about it and be embassassed about it!
NOT SAY "WELL DONE!"
-
Warne quoted on cricinfo saying there is no way he would of acted alone....if what we see is true
How many Aussies can you get in the match referees room? :)
-
Another class 50 from AB. Again looks likes more solid every innings
-
The Australians cheated and still couldn't find away to dislodge the brilliant de Villiers. Really hope he stays around until he reaches 10k runs
-
Ahhh Australia. Offended by everything, ashamed of nothing.
-
Anyone else looking forward to bancroft’s interview? His ashes one was pretty amusing.
Send Johnny over to headbutt him as punishment
-
There definitely some Aussie back room staff guy in the local shop trying to find something yellow and small that they can say Bancroft had for a believable reason?
“It’s a deodorising patch, Bancroft has a smelly bell end and has to change it often”..........
-
Pretty clear Bancroft was just a pawn. Lehman, Smith, Warner should be penalized more as this seemed to be team plan... esp given how Lehman told 12th man to go tell bancfroft to hide the sandpaper
-
This press conference...
Smith admits leadership group knew about it... then claims it won't happen again and that he'll be stepping down. Bancroft says it was yellow tape with dirt from the wicket- basically sandpaper then...
Lehman has to go, Smith has to step down.
-
With Smith and Bancroft admitting to ball tampering there has to be some sort of ban for both of them.
-
Lehmann definitely involved
(http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DZDlvTxWkAAiNDp.jpg)
(credit @kieranrennie)
-
Yep they have admitted it and it's also kicking off on Twitter between Michael I love myself Vaughan and Candice Warner over some on field abuse, banter the Aussies call it, her hubby received.
Fair to say it's an explosive news day.
Bancroft is clearly a mule caught out, Smith and Lehman absolutely should be sacked off.
Don't know if that Sutherland bloke is still in change of the ACB but he should take the tough call and start firing people.
My guess is everyone is involved but those at the top carry the can is how it should be.
-
Ex pro’s got it spot on about abuse they’ve faced in Australia. All of a sudden the Aussies get some back and now they’re crying about it
Hussain’s views at the end of the play was spot on re: australia
-
I made this very point about the Aussie double standards during the Ashes. There is a fine line between ignorance and idiocy
-
Gonna post a bit of stuff on this because quite frankly it really p*sses me off to see it happen at the top of the game.
Some excerpts from the news conference with only Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith present in front of the journos.
First off, some clear soundbites given to both of them by their media relations team in the limited time from end of play to conference.
Deeply regrettable (x3)
Won't happen again (x2)
Incredibly sorry
Not proud of (x4)
Learn from/Come back strong from (x3)
It didn't work, the umpires didn't obviously change the ball (x2)
The last one, really annoys me. Wtf does it matter if it worked or not?
Now some individual quotes from both in response to questions from the journos.
CB: "On myself I saw an opportunity to use some [sticky] tape...get some granules from the rough patches on the wicket...and try to change the ball condition"
SS: "The leadership group knew about it. We spoke about it over lunch."
SS: "It's not what the Australian cricket team's about."
Q: "Would you regret it if you hadn't been caught?" SS:"I think deep down I would." "If we weren't caught, I'd feel incredibly bad about it."
CB:"I was in the wrong place at the wrong time"
CB:"[No, I didn't feel coerced to do it]I was in the vicinity of the area when the leadership group were discussing it"
SS: "I won't be considering stepping down, I still think I'm the right person for the job"
So, it's murky about how it was arranged. Did the "management group" who SS wouldn't name but highly likely to include poor little Davey Warner, ask CB to do it? Or did CB volunteer? One of the journos suggested that it was established practice in the Aussie team to get the newer, younger players to do certain things. Nice culture.
"It's not what the Australian cricket team's about" - But it 100% is. One of the players did it, with approval from the team's leadership group.
SS, who feels he's the right guy to carry on the captaincy, says he regrets it deep down. Does this mean not deep down he'd be ok with it? And he would only feel "incredibly bad" if they hadn't got caught. As opposed to what I would hope for from a Captain - It would be unacceptable, and I would notify the appropriate authorities asap.
Overall, as I've said, this really annoys me. I know that other teams have tried various methods some more bizarre, some more brazen. So the Aussies aren't on their own. However, sometimes, an example has to be made for the overall good of the game and I think it's the time.
What would I do?
Ban the Aussie team for a year from International matches. I read recently that the Associate teams have almost no matches now that the WCQ is over which will affect their improving performances greatly, and slow up any momentum in growing the game worldwide. So they can step in.
Smith gets permanent ban from Captaincy all forms, Bancroft a 2 year ban from International matches all forms.
If the punishment is not severe (demerit points, match fee fines etc), what's to stop Aussies or the other teams from doing it again.
Rant over.
-
All teams do it
All teams get away with it
This team will get away with it (maybe a few quid and a game or two but nothing serious)
Life will go on
The game really is sinking th more and more bad attitudes and incidents from pro level downwards. Sad to see but not surprising
-
The Australians won't get away with this. No way.
Lehmann will go, Bancroft will be banned, Smith will lose the captaincy and be banned.
Only question is whether Warner and whoever else is in the leadership group goes too.
Too much evidence in full view of the world- and everyone will be gunning for them because of their behaviour recently.
No way will they get away with it.
-

Bancroft will be sacrificial lamb.

Dean Richards was given a three year ban for bloodgate. This, for me is similar.

I don't think they will either, it's blatant and I think they are in deep water
The whole leadership group should get nailed, I think as pointed out previously on the forum, new member does it because they think he is the sacrificial lamb
Don't think that's going to wash. The must be breathtakingly stupid to think the cameras won't see it. They are everywhere!!
-
They have been doing it for some time!!!
They’ve had to turn to this because the David Warner super duper taped hands with the sandpaper/grit tape has been rumbled so they’ve tried to get it done another way.
-

They will..
Maybe boof will resign but will soon pick up another gig so won’t care.. smith might lose the capt but again, few games ban and a bit of money will be back.. again.. doesn’t care
Bancroft might get a few games and some cash.. agai, won’t care.
Simple truth.. there isnt a effective deterrent out there and players are getting away with stuff in the name of ‘aggressive’ and ‘competitive’.. sledging, verbals, ball tampering .. it’s all Just teams pushing the limits and the ICC is doing nothing .
All it will take is a few stupidly harsh punishments and it will stop.. literally over night.. players simply won’t risk their careers to cheat or sledge people etc if they know they’d lose 1+years of their careers.

Any respect I had for Smith is gone. Most of all for throwing a junior player under the bus... If you want to do that, man up and do it yourself.

Steve Smith should have to name his leadership committee if he refuses Life Ban if he does 5 Year Ban effectively that's Life .
Bancroft 2 Years even though he is just as Guilty as all of them my thoughts are he was pressurised into committing the offence and should be given a bit of leeway

I’d be happy to see that level of punishment myself but I seriously just don’t think the ICC have the billy (No Swearing Please)
-
They will get nothing more than a small slap on the wrist.. nothing meaningful
They did it in India remember and kohli called it out.. nothing happened..
I don't know an incident in India myself or of any press articles.Personally I don't recall ever seeing anything quite so blatant and I've been watching a long time.
I disagree with your outcome,I think they will get the book thrown at them.
And I would think the same if it was England.
What does Faf de plesis think of this?? He got charged for having a sweet in his mouth correct? and Kholi a similar charge.
Saliva from a sweet is allowed(correct me if I'm wrong please) taking a DIY kit to the ball and sandpapering it is not.
The Asian countries that control cricket will want the Aussies nailed.
I wold expect root and the coach to resign and get banned if this was England, Smith and Lehmann are cheats, blatant cheats.
-
One bloke who might have a little smile to himself tonight - Jonny Bairstow
Always thought that giggling rat interview would come back to bite bancroft
Very cowardly from Smith and stupid from Bancroft. Could draw comparisons to Butt coercing Amir but in that case it was a naive 17 year old. Not sure what Bancrofts reason is other than being really dull.
The whole premeditation of it is disgraceful.
Lehmann wanted Broad refused entry to Australia if I remember correctly for not walking for a nick behind! I wonder what punishment he will suggest for Smith, Bancroft and hillbilly Dave

Can't see how Smith can continue as Captain after this.Surely New Balance will drop a cheat? They acted pretty quickly with another Marquee player...
I hope the idiots get long bans. With the scrutiny and coverage these days, they weren't going to get away with it! Pure stupidity and really sad
-
I really struggle with the thought processes and series of events that lead to taking it out on the field and actually doing that.
At any point from thinking up the idea, to sharing it, to sharing it more widely, to how do we do this, to here's thenplan, to can we get away with this, to actually doing it, does one of the number of colluders not say "look fellas, this ain't right"? Maybe I'm naive and this does happen all the time, but with the amount if TV cameras about I'm not so sure that it does.
It's just really disappointing. And for the record I'm old enough to remember Atherton doing it and Richie Benaud on commentary saying famously "steady on!" I was amazed then. Smith will carry this around for his career and beyond...
-
A bit like spot fixing, it makes you question whether what you are watching is skill or just tampering. Was the Aussies in the first test reversing it a mile skill or sandpaper?? I think the latter now
I have no doubt host broadcasters choose not to show the home sides ball tampering - another issue. How many times does it actually happen
-
Surely there is no one on here who has watched the link to that press conference is in any doubt Bancroft has been set up and carried under the bus by the 'management group'
He was 'incredibly nervous about doing it' and 'heard the management group talking about it and was in the vicinity'
In other words he was not part of the decision and told to do it
Jesus I actually feel sorry for him.
It's beyond belief
-
Ah hubris

Exactly, so the only logical conclusion you could reach is this one, as @RPC/Blueroom Cricket - Adie has mentioned
Because they have done it before and the cameras have not picked it up they did it again.on this basis they did not get caught previously.
I staggered by the stupidity of it as well.

No you’re not allowed to use sweets !! Hence jelly baby gate etc etc
Players do it because no one stamps it out and we laugh it off as ‘part of the game’

If one thing positive has come from this... I've beaten my highest score in actual cricket on twitter :D

Or the other logical conclusion is that it doesn't happen often. There are more cameras than ever at international matches. I genuinely don't believe there's a conspiracy to highlight some cases and not the majority of others.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen more than is reported; just that it takes a lot to conspire on an international level. I don't assume a lack of integrity from the majority of cricketers at that level. I may be wrong!
I also think that excuses Smith to a point. He needs to be made an example of. I think the ICCs and CAs responses to this will highlight how seriously this is taken by the cricketing world...
-
Listening to Jim Maxwell earlier he was saying that he wouldn't be surprised if Lehman was involved even though Smith has said the decision to tamper with the ball was from the leadership group. A message was sent out from the dressing room when it was spotted on camera.

I disagree. Reputation is important to most men, and his is now tainted forever.

Bancroft was asked, and answered 2 questions in total on that press conference. Everything else was asked to Smith.
The press there are not stupid, they know how and who deceided to do this. The management group is responsible and Bancroft is just a newbie player.
Lehmann will be part of any decision making in that group
-

Atherton
Tendulkar
Neither seems to have suffered in any way shape or form
-
Wasnt as much coverage or social media back thenwas there? Different eras, different times.
Salman Butt coerced Mohammad Amir into cheating.
Cameron Bancroft is a rookie 25 year old who looks out of his depth and very droppable- what kind of leader does that make Smith.
-
Atherton
Tendulkar
Neither seems to have suffered in any way shape or form
That was a different time. In the mass hysteria of the social media era, and the greater accessibility consumers have to publicly out big organisations, there is no way they'll get away with it. Times have changed, and I don't think cricketing society will be forgiving at all, especially given the poor state of the game

Odds increasing both Smith And Lehmann to be sacked. No one is really buying the Bancroft lone wolf theory. :)
Can we re run the Ashes with Stokesy?
-
It was just so dumb, Smith's lost plenty of points in this series with me, he hasn't handled any of this series like a leader.
Lehman will be up to eye balls in this.
-
Australian press and ex-players have responded very strongly.
Full of the 'black' editing style used when someone dies. Makes for interesting reading.
Most Aussies on twitter seem to want all involved to go.
-
A video has emerged on Twitter of Bancroft putting sugar in his pocket... DURING THE ASHES... ;)
Even if there wasn’t evidence we know that this team will have done it before. Hell, Mitch Johnson questioned how they’d got an almost new ball reversing so quickly during the ashes via Twitter
India are no better and I suspect England and South Africa do it to.
-
Whilst Smith's reputation is in tatters those suggesting he'll be dropped are wide of the mark. Smith averages 62 and is Australia's only world class batsman. Smith may get some sort of suspension but Lehmann and Bancroft are the ones who'll get chopped for good. All that said Smith should lose the captaincy.
-
I hope CA ban all involved players from international cricket for 12 months, strips smith and warner of titles and hit them with massive fines, to the extent of maybe tearing up their central contracts. I'm embarrassed and disgusted. Im sure every country does it to some extent but how stupid do you have to be to get caught.
-
Totally agree. Throw these cheats away. This game doesn't deserve such players anymore.
-
Still captain, yeah? Ah
-
Aussie Sports Commission are also asking him to be removed as captain. They are nooooooo messing around

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke says he would unretire and return as captain if he was was asked to. When Smith is sacked it would also rule out Warner as he was surely in

You get the feeling this Sutherland dude will get to the bottom of it and take no prisoners
I think in Australia the old legends are held in higher esteem then here and they are nailing this current team
Clarke said 'anyone' to captain the team as long as it's none of the senior players currently as he clearly feels it's the management groups fault by making Bancroft the lamb
It ain't going to work thou Cricket Australia don't sound like they will wait much longer until the axe is wielded

So the Aussies have admitted ball tampering - 1. Why was the ball not changed over night? 2. Why have 5 penalty runs not been added to the score?
Did I miss something?

After all if they are not playing for them they are playing for us

I think the Aussies should retrospectively lose the Ashes after this.I'll take a 2-1.

Smith should lose captaincy.
Warner loses v.c.
Both get 1 match ban.
Bancroft gets 1 match ban.
Paine to be oz captain until a long term replacement is obvious.
Sad day for world cricket .
lehmann should be ostracised from rhe cricket world in my books .
I cant respect smith anymore as this is 2nd time in a year he has cheated....obviously cant make ethical decisions under pressure.
-
Smith and Warner deserve severe and lengthy bans. 6-12 months. Lehmann banned for life. Bancroft 2 year ban. If you ban these morons then it won't happen in the future

I'm conflicted. The Boof of his playing days would have had no truck with such nonsense. He more than anyone appreciated that it was just a game. But...his attitude to the verbals all winter has been...somehow wrong.

wrote an anther thead the Aussies will pull every trick not surprised just saddened by it.

You heard it hear first, Aussies are too big in the game to face any meaningful penalties so any sanctions given will seem too leanient. Smith will resign and just play as a batsman and so will Warner, coach will defend himself and most likely remain in his position (Bans and fines may be used against them however they will be minor). Smith's arrogance about the entire situation suggests he's untouchable and that nothing will come of it, maybe he's got the backing of the CA hence the swagger?
This story will be swept away quickly by ICC board, again because Aus are one of the key players and as we all know the ICC are corrupt money grabbers.
It's a sad state but I genuinely believe most will get away with it and in a year's time we will have forgotten about it.

Pretty sure I called a lack of meaningful action at the time on this thread 🙈
Everyone will forget within a few days just like people are letting stokes off beating the crap out of someone and hales for kicking someone in the head (which is never acceptable).

Faf has been caught TWICE. The ICC regulations are not that strict when it comes to tampering.
-
Yup! 3 demerit points only for Bancroft.
I'm actually quite glad that they were not too hard on Bancroft - he was very much the poor stooge in this. I wonder to what extent the ICC also recognised that if they made him unavailable for the fourth test they were in effect a) giving CA the opportunity to make him the sacrificial lamb and b) probably ending his test career in the process.

I’m sure there are others who just haven’t been caught or at least pulled up.
The game is at a point where it needs to decide if it’s time to clean up or give up and continue down the road it’s on. Sadly, I suspect nothing will change as a lot of the above are still playing or making big money so people simply don’t care about cheating.

They don’t care.. pros don’t care.. ICC obviously don’t care
Time to move on and just accept it’s happening in every innings

Unfortunately true...
I think 100% they have been using Warner to do this with his strapping on his hand and since the complaint from SA Australia had to try something new to get the same effect.

Aus have the stuffing knocked out of them.. collapsing
If any of them weren’t aware of what was happening then I suppose it would remove the fight from you

Interesting email sent to anybody that is signed up to Cricket Australias mailing list....
To our Australian Cricket Fans,
We are sorry.
We are sorry that you had to wake up this morning to news from South Africa that our Australian Men’s Cricket team and our Captain admitted to conduct that is outside both the Laws of our game and the Spirit of Cricket.
This behaviour calls into question the integrity of the team and Cricket Australia.
Following discussions with Steve Smith and David Warner they have agreed to stand down as Captain and Vice-Captain respectively for the remainder of this Test match.
As I said at a media conference earlier today, Cricket Australia and Australian cricket fans expect high standards from cricketers representing our country, and on this occasion these standards have not been met.
We know how you feel and have heard your feedback loud and clear. We share your anger and disappointment.
As you would be aware, we have launched an immediate investigation into what transpired in Cape Town, and our Head of Integrity is travelling to South Africa as we speak.
All Australians, like us, want answers and we will keep you updated on our findings, as a matter of urgency.
James Sutherland
Chief Executive Officer - Cricket Australia

Not going to happen. If at all anything Bancroft might be banned for life. If Lehman takes the fall then Smith & Warner will be safe.

He was just the tool.
Smith, Warner and Lehman should get one year bans from all cricket (including t20 merry go round).

Keep on dreaming.
They will huff and puff and do a few investigations and then it’ll all go back to normal and warner, smith and co will continue to earn mega bucks and fans, just like with hales, Stokes and all those before them.. will forget it
I mean, just look at how most people were over stokes..
-
^ Stokes hasn't been charged yet and has the impending court case to come, although I completely take on board the ICCs impotence. A one game ban is not a deterrent. If anything teams could use it in their favour...
However, I tbink the noises coming from CA and the ASC are that there will be a far heavier punishment. It won't be a life ban, but i bet it will be more than one game. It's not as serious as match fixing, which is illegal, but it is cheating. Life bans are out of the question and quite rightly. Smith and Warner have a big problem.
-

Why do you keep comparing this to the Stokes incident??
This effects the game directly, happy during a game and the vast majority of people are united that it is harmful to the game.
The Stokes incident (for which he is yet to be found guilty) did not effect the game directly and was probably at a 50/50 split with some actually praising his actions...
-
There is a difference between one individual doing ball tampering at the moment and getting caught. But in this case it's decided beforehand by senior players/management at lunch break. I am sure atleast 4 to 5 players are involved/knew about this.
They were trying to damage the ball to get it changed. Apparently the old ball from the box reverses more. Starc took 5 wickets in a spell in the first test and that was with a changed ball. This time the umpires did not change the ball. Their plan did not work.
The question is how long is this going on for?
-

-
Broad mentioned the Aussies have had it reversing for the ashes and the last couple of matches. So why would the senior management be using this new method now.
Sounds more like they’ve been doing it for a while.
If a player like AB (with his reputitation and creditabity) comes out and says warner must be doing something with the tape on his hands - he must’ve spotted something not right. For Warner to suddendly avoid shining the ball in the first innings (before this incident) and Bancroft take over is sign of guilt.
Can’t hide that this has been going on for a while.
-
Here is what I expect to happen...
1. Lehman will be found as the root cause and will be banned for life from international cricket.
2. Smith & Warner might be dropped from the side for a year or so. IPL/BBL/T20 contracts also might go belly up.
3. Tim Paine will continue to lead the team for next few months until new coach/captain combo arises.
If at all anything Lehman should have come out in the press conference and accepted the team’s fault. As the senior most person of the team and coach - he should bear the responsibility for such behavior. Sending Tim Paine out to apologize was an act of throwing him under the bus!
-
I don't see Lehmann being banned for life, if at all - aside from my expressed concerns about the fact that it just isn't in keeping with his previous actions and attitude to the game, I note that Smith, Bancroft and Warner all said the coaching team knew nowt about it.
There is a danger of overrreaction here. I think an appropriate response would be to ban Smith and Warner from all cricket until after Australia's next Test. The loss of IPL moolah and the stain on their reputations will be sanction enough.
-
Sorry but for me there's no difference in the Australian crisis and the Pakistani match fixing crisis of 2010.
Just at Butt twisted Amir's arm into bowling no balls. Here Smith/Warner etc twisted Bancroft into tampering with the ball. Bancroft comes across as quite immature and not very intelligent so probably went along as to get in with Smith/Warner leadership group.
Smith merits an extended ban from all cricket maybe 12-24 months. Warner probably similar. Lehmann life ban if he actually fronts up and speaks to the media. Bancroft maybe a shorter ban 6 months.
A little slap on the wrist isn't going to be a deterrent

Sorry however this is odious the truth is ALL SIDES have cheated in the last calender year just they got caught.
For me something needs to be done but no nation is not guilty at all. Sad indictment is the old time players coming out and jumping on the band wagon when in there day i assure you something went amiss.
Cricket needs a shake up hopefully this is it.
I have played quite a bit of high level t20 and we soften the ball as every good side does is that not the same and before you say sides don't look at a new ball it hardly touches the floor. In white ball it all that happens outside the ring or not.

The difference being Steven Smith admitted on international television it was pre planned and they wanted to cheat to win.
Whether x y z cheated is irrelevant. The captain(probably former) of Australia and best batsman on the planet(according to the stats) destroyed the customs of the game

I don't think match fixing or rather the deliberate bowling of no balls in 2010 and tampering with the ball which is far more common is comparable in terms of how serious the two 'offences' are but
You make a very good comparison with Amir and Bancroft. I see exactly the same senario here too with a junior member of the team being made/persuaded to do the deed. We saw Brancroft in the interview say he was 'very nervous about doing it' but 'heard it talked about by the senior group '.
The pre planned nature of this is perhaps why this has really kicked off. Today we found out Sutherland has spoken to Smith before about the team behaviour.
International sports stars most of the time have the backing of the average fan, we all want our National team to do well.
It seems this team , and I'm not the least bit surprised, is not popular in Australia, and that's what CA will know very well.
I don't think myself Lehamnn,Smith and Warner and the rest of the group will get away with it because of the pre planned nature of it and chucking a newbie under the bus.
Cricket Australia seem in the mood to had our decent bans and clean up a bit.
Jason Gillespie has written a good article in the Guardian today,he is not a rose tinted ex player, it's worth a read.

Mate i agree it piss poor but England have done it all have done it. Faf did it with sweets and yes he did it. (pre planned or not every nation messes with the ball in some degree.
It time cricket cleaned up from all nations thats my point.
The real thing is Australia are at the minute public enemy number 1 because of there behaviour and this has added but do not be blinkered unless the crime is getting caught.
It why players from other nations are a bit sheepish with condemming.
And in truth it happens at the weekend too. I opened in a league game last year and dropped one down i picked up the ball and my god one half looked like wolverine had been at it. (wasting his time he was much better than me anyway).

Wonder if NB will terminate their sponsorship for Smith as they did with Stokes

Wonder if NB will terminate their sponsorship for Smith as they did with Stokes
Would be very surprised if they don't drop him, bit pot kettle if they don't after setting the precedent with Stokes. There's an argument for what Smith did being worse than Stokes from a sponsorship point of view too.

At lest now we know where Smith got the idea
As usual more mixed messages from the ICC. Plenty of sides ball temper as faf has done this time. So let's see it either enforced or legalise ball tempering and allow each side some sand paper.

Spot on, used to shine the ball apparently. However, in this case Zaheer Khan thought the scattering of jelly beans might have been a pop at him.

I don't think anyone is arguing that everybody else is a saint, it's just that Aus cricket has given the impression that they would not cross that line.
Now, they've left themselves open to ridicule and doubt. Did they cheat in the Ashes? Maybe sugar was used to reverse swing the ball. Who knew what and when? The list goes on.
-
Will smith front up for the presentations?
Probably not given Paine is “captain”. Time mr lehmann also front up, he’s been vocal previously but appears to be hiding
Whats Will Smith got to do with any of this ? :D

We may well find out from Sutherland tommorow what's happens next. If you believe the papers(Guardian tonight) two players furious with being linked to the 'senior group' ....Jason Gillespie mentioned this yesterday are Starc and Hazlewood who did not approve of what was being discussed- so there's a split in the dressing room by the sounds of it
The main instigator...yup David Warner.
I wonder what his wife is going to tweet about that.
Year long bans for Smith and possible Warner.
For what it's worth, I think it will be a years ban by cricket Australia.
Lehmann I find it impossible to believe he did not know what was going on but that is how it appears.
:)
-
Let’s not forget Smith and warner don’t have many friends left with CA after the whole contract strike. I can see some people from CA looking for revenge
Hope warner also gets a year ban and not just smith.
Ponting would be the perfect replacement for Lehmann
I’m sure if smith could have that press conference again he would’ve done what others in the past have done and denied it and not used the words “cheated”. He probably was naive and thought he would get a slap on the wrist

Yes good point far as I know whatever party was right in that contract dispute CA ended up giving the players the best deal
They may think they have been kicked in the teeth.
i can't stand the way Australia go about their cricket, and I've seen some real quality players this lot are not even that good
But this is the chance to clean it up and I think they will.
In the long run this could be the best thing to get the Aussie public behind the team

Quote from Fox Sports:
DISGRACED Australian vice-captain David Warner has further outraged devastated teammates by swilling champagne in the bar of the team hotel in Cape Town with non-cricket mates, foxsports.com.au understands.
Several of Warner’s already furious teammates have asked cricket bosses to have the disgraced batsman ‘removed’ from the team hotel, warning there could be an ‘incident’ between Warner and angry players if he remains.
Foxsports.com.au has been told Warner removed himself from a WhatsApp group between the players, with one source saying he had ‘gone rogue’ since news of the ball tampering saga broke.
As Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland was due to land in Cape Town later tonight or tomorrow morning to impose penalties on players involved, it’s believed several players in the Australian team were not aware of the tampering plot until damning footage of Cameron Bancroft scrubbing the ball with yellow tape appeared on the big screen at the ground.
It comes as reports emerged suggesting Warner was the ring leader of the ball-tampering scandal.
END QUOTE

Cricketers don't have non cricket mates, this is the golden rule.

I’ve read Lehmann has resigned Langer to be fast tracked. Renshaw has definitely been called up with Burns set to follow to cover Warner/Smith/possibly Bancroft .

I could probably count on one hand how many people I'd consider mates from outside cricket - you're not wrong haha

what about mates made away form cricket who also happen to play cricket?!?
back to the cricket.. cant see australia winning the 3rd test! hopefully SA get another big win!

Warner probably on his way out of the AUS team.
Smith might lose his captaincy.

yep that is what i am reading as well.
which if that happens it means for the 4th test they will need 2 more batters - likely to be Matt Renshaw (about to get on a plane) and Joe Burns - with Hanscombe already replacing Bancroft who is banned.

I thought handscomb was a straight swap for smith who has already got a one match ban . And i thought bancroft only got 3 demerit point punishment/free to play 4th test from icc ? My guess is that renshaw will come in for warner , and if bancroft is going to recieve further sanctions from c.a then they will need to send another (burns? or other) along with renshaw on the plane . Who /how many guys get off that plane will indicate whether bancroft is getting suspended by c.a or not .
-
Renshaw, Burns and Bailey enroute to South Africa according to the rumours

renshaw and burns to open, bailey in for smith and as captain?

Yep apologies I realise Bancroft hasn't been banned officially by the ICC.
However with the rumours of both Renshaw and Burns on a plane surely CA will ban him.

One would assume Bailey would be captain I read he was voted shield player of the year so the domestic guys must rate him

Some massive sweeping under the carpet going on here.

Lucky Lehman!!
Maxwell renshaw and burns on was to SA Bancroft smith and warner on way home
Paine captain
-
I like maxi in better than bringing in bailey . Sure, bailey is a good skipper, but paine can do the job .
I cant believe bancroft is university educated (business degree). He comes across about as sharp as a spoon . Also , his sleight of hand is hopelessly poor . Lucky he never had to make a living as a pick pocket .
-
Some massive sweeping under the carpet going on here.
Sadly so.. yet again players and coaches getting away with things as boards simply don’t have a spine to ban people. England are no better with stokes/hales and previous players like atherton/trescothick
-
Not sure if it’s been posted but Smith, Warner and Bankcroft have been sent home
-
Hang on fellas, no decision yet! Thats coming tomorrow. I think a year ban, as many suggest, is fair punishment for the crime. Warner may not play again. Smith stripped of captaincy.
If they are lenient I'll be the first to say so, but let's see what they get first. Put the pitchforks back in the shed for now... 😉

Sutherland wouldn't answer the question whether this was cheating or not. The journalist wanted a simple yes or no. His response was this wasn't in the spirit of the game and the laws.

BBC sport says they’ve been sent home

Lucky Lehman!!

All we know is Lehman is lucky! Confirmed he is continuing and the three culprits are heading home
I cannot believe Lehmann knew nothing though! How little is he trusted by the dressing room for that to be the case!
-
They are all lying
There is no way Lehman didn't know. There is no way the bowlers didn't know.
-
Fair enough if Lehman genuinely didn't know. However, it's happened on his watch and most of all the extremely poor behaviour by players has continually occurred during his time. For that reason I feel it is disappointing that CA have let him stay. This was an opportunity to make a fresh start and change the toxic culture of the team. I'm not sure this is likely to happen under Lehman's leadership.
-
They are all lying
There is no way Lehman didn't know. There is no way the bowlers didn't know.
The idea that three batsmen got together and came up with a new plan to get the ball reversing more without speaking to any of the bowlers about it is pretty hard to believe.
-
I find it impossible to believe Lehmann had no knowledge of what has gone on.
Do you think the story will change when smith and Warner get 12 month bans which has got to be coming tommorow?
Those two are rightly going to get nailed, the Aussie camp and split and the team is imploding, will they take the rap themselves if there are others involved?
-

+1.
Find it hard to believe that Lehman knew nothing about this ...
-
In Lehmann's case I think it possibly is believable he didn't know, but he's still the man in charge. Perhaps more will come after the tour, you'd potentially expect him to be sacked if they think he did know or asked to resign if he didn't.

Lehman’s is still In a. Job.. stinks of cover up as Dave says
He knew.l if he didn’t know he’s not doing his job and when he saw Bancroft doing what he did he should have hauled him off

True - either way to make a clean break - Lehman might step down on his own.
-
He knew.l if he didn’t know he’s not doing his job and when he saw Bancroft doing what he did he should have hauled him off
You're assuming that a) Handscomb wasn't sent on to ask Smith what in the living hell was going on and b) that Lehmann - or more accurately the bollocking that he might be surmised to have delivered - was not a big factor in the "leadership group" not attempting to deny it, or to blame Bancroft?
-
I find it equally hard to believe that a manager can know what all of his charges are doing every second of every day. That's all. Who knows if the other players told the investigators that Lehman tore a strip off the three players? And he did offer to step down.
Simple answer is, we don't know. Thats all im saying. Smith Warner and Bancroft deserve to get long bans that will most likely end one international career. But i dont want to see players and staff who weren't involved tarred with the same brush. Who would?
-
A lot of rumours that Warner has “gone rogue” and a lot of the other players have had enough of him. Could see this becoming similar to KP and England in that they may choose to not select him anymore, even after any ban may has passed
-

Do you know what I don't think the public has the full story here by any means. They have delayed announcing any bans for legal reasons surely. They must want to ban the 3 of them for some time and are just checking they can do that.
I even read a report this evening from Jim maxwell saying as he understands it Smith did not know the extent of what was going to be done and it was down to Warner!!
I do believe it's possible myself Starc and maybe Lyon and Hazlewood were not in on what was going on, it's possible I suppose there is a split in that dressing room.
As has been said earlier....we don't really know and any number of things could happen. Warner thou....seems out on his own, the team has turned against him
Maybe they want to save their own skins? :)
-
Interesting that Warner turned a reverend during the big bats days and was scoring heavily then. We can see a definite downturn in his form ever since the big bats got banned in 2017. Maybe big bats was what got him going all along. Now that he is not able to score big, consistent runs as before, he must have reverted back to his original aggressive self and all this behavior is a by product of that inherent frustration at the "system" and a feeling of being victimized into using just the full 40 mm, 67 mm bats which he believes is not fair deep down in his heart...So he hatched the plan, seeing that the skip is himself not able to score, he thought he could be easily convinced into accepting it and there is a newcomer with neither a brain nor runs, available to execute..all was going as per plan until one Fanie De Villiers intervened in between and spoilt the whole thing..just a theory... :D
-
A lot of rumours that Warner has “gone rogue” and a lot of the other players have had enough of him. Could see this becoming similar to KP and England in that they may choose to not select him anymore, even after any ban may has passed
Jim Maxwell thinks that this it could be the end for Warner.

Definitely a couple of things not adding up. Smith mentioned leadership group which going on today’s actions means it consists of himself and Warner only. And as many pros/ex pros have said on social media, bowlers like to either be in total control of the ball or as in much control as they can, yet the three punished are batsmen. Starc, Hazlewood & to a lesser extent Lyon fit into the mould of both. I obviously can’t say for sure that they were totally involved but it’s hard to believe they weren’t. They may not have been the total brains behind it but I suspect they will have more than likely been consulted at least.
-
How long has this been going on for?
-
Smith is screwed whether or not he knew the full extent to what was going on, he's captain its his team and responsibility, so he cops for it.
Can't see how Lehmann has remained, he was clearly involved in the attempt to cover it up, even if he didn't know they were planning it, he's got involved with the deceit
-
They’ve shrunk the circle so that the side isn’t decimated for tests to come and those mentioned are having to bare the brunt of it. I’m still not buying the sticky tape story either, the best tool for the job is going to be sandpaper which is effectively what they were trying to make using the tape anyway!
A group by definition is more than 2 people, I’d wager there was 4/5 of them in on it but Smith and Warner are culpable are captain and VC with Bancroft as whipping boy as the NKOTB.
-
Irrespective of whether he not he knew about it from the outset and was involved in the planning, Lehmann knew full well what he was doing when he sent Handscomb out to let them know they’d been busted
I too find it hard to believe that Lehmann had no knowledge of something this significant going on the in dressing room and his actions in sending a player on to the field as soon as the TV cameras had picked this up aren't consistent with him being unaware as to what was going on. Likewise, his cowardly action in refusing to front up to the media and instead throwing one of the youngest players in the dressing room under a bus aren't consistent with someone who has nothing to hide.
I also find it hard to believe that this is the first time Australia has tampered with the ball in his way. Both during this series and in the Ashes before, Australia was getting the ball to consistently reverse swing far earlier than a ball would deteriorate without abrasions being deliberately caused.
Finally, a can't go along with the idea that the bowlers had no idea what was going. The damage caused to the ball by Bancroft was clear from the TV footage to be abrasions spreading around the ball and therefore inconsistent with natural wear and tear but entirely consistent with an abrasive object being rubbed against the ball. Any club bowler could clearly see that that wasn't natural damage to a ball. Cummins has been outstanding since coming back to international cricket but this weeks' events really question how many, if any at all, of those wickets were taken fairly.

back in time for the ashes and world cup - coincidence? hardly!
wouldn't be overly surprised if they're picked up by a county, assuming this is just an international ban!
It will be a ban for all Australian affiliated clubs and country. Nothing stopping them from playing county cricket as CA can't do anything about that.
-
Will be very hard for them to get back into the side after such a long period of time, can't imagine Warner in particular ever playing international cricket again
-
Highly doubt they both will play international cricket again. 12 months is a long time..
-

Don't CA need to grant an NOC for their contracted players to play overseas? eg. IPL and CC cricket

Nah totally possible. Look at Mohammed Amir, admittedly he was 17 when banned, but he took out 5 years.
As long as they play domestic cricket.
-
They will both play international cricket again. It is just a sabbatical for them.
-
Pretty sad state of affairs really, like a Greek tragedy. I still think Lehmann has got away with one big time as he helped build that toxic win at all costs culture.
-
"They will never play again" please....this 12 months will fly, Smith will do all the right things during this break and come back all the fresher.
The guy averages 60 and will cop the punishment he is given on the chin, he will be welcomed back..albeit sheepishly from the public.
As for David Warner..sounds like a few bridges in the aussie team are burning as we speak, it might be alot harder for him if the team wants him.
Can't wait to see what Tim Paine can create with this group, what a turn around for him in the last year! Hopefully there is a huge culture shift and the ego driven circle jerk that smith and warner have created is nothing but a bad memory.

Smith should be fine - before this happened he was basically more or less liked and respected. Warner...less so...

Banned from international and domestic cricket but encouraged to return to grade cricket + 100 hours of community service. Smith and Bancroft eligible to hold leadership roles in the future on condition, but warner not due to an apparent lack of contrition.
-
CONFIRMED:
warner and smith banned for 12 months
Bancroft banned for 9 months
it WAS sandpaper
Smith and Bancroft not to be considered for leadership roles for 12 months following ban
Warner never to be considered for leadership roles following ban
-
You have to admire Bancroft's bravery though in a way, that's the last place I would want to stuff some sandpaper.
-
They’ve confirmed it was sandpaper???
Is that right as opposed to sticky tape and granules

What's Hicky doing with the Aussies?
-
He's their batting coach isn't he? Or is he just there doing a bit of DIY? You know, rubbing down and sanding, that sort of thing.

Been their batting coach for a while from what I remember!

Well done Cricket Australia ... appropriate action I think.
Now the ICC need to take a long hard look at themselves.

The handshake was noticeably strong, which was unsurprising given that his England team-mates used to call Graeme Hick “Arnie” — after Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Hick was always fitter and stronger than your average cricketer. He looks no different these days at the age of 51. Indeed, he appears as though he could still be playing rather than coaching the Australia batsmen.
Imagine him in the Indian Premier League auction last weekend. He played some T20 at the end of his career, but not in his prime.
Hick scored 41,112 first-class runs at 52.23 with 136 centuries
“I wish I’d had a chance of playing a few years of IPL,” he says with a laugh. “It would have been fun.”
It is the only time in the course of our interview that, unprompted, Hick mentions his career. It is not that he doesn’t want to talk about it — 41,112 first-class runs at 52.23 with 136 centuries (not forgetting 40 List A hundreds) should always be worth talking about, even for such a modest and unassuming man as Hick — but rather that he is tired of answering the same question: why did he not crack Test cricket in the same way?
Just six hundreds in 65 Tests at an average of 31.32 is not exactly the same level of butchery that county attacks suffered year after year.
“I don’t find it difficult talking about it, it is just that I have answered the question so many times,” he says in wholly good humour. “I sometimes feel that the article is written before the question is asked. I just find it boring as to why people want to keep talking about it. It’s history. It’s 20 years ago.”
Indeed it is. Its only relevance now is that he thinks it helps him in his role as the Australia batting coach.
“In a way my real mixed experiences have helped me in some of the advice I am able to pass on because I have been through quite a bit, good and bad,” he says.
The greatest players do not make the greatest coaches and all that. Indeed there was a delicious match-up in the recent Ashes when Hick and Mark Ramprakash, two of England’s greatest unfulfilled talents on the Test stage, were the opposing batting coaches.
“I did have a chuckle at that,” Hick says. “But it was nice to see him. We had a catch-up. I like Ramps. It was interesting to see him working. You are often close to each other in the nets.
“In these roles you have to draw on your experiences, whether it was what you have done or what you see other people do or say. You put it in your toolbox and say, ‘That’s interesting, I’ll use that.’ ”
For the reason why Hick, a Zimbabwean who made England his home for so long, has ended up in Australia, we have to look to the influence of his children, Lauren and Jordan. And the XXXX Gold Beach Cricket series around the time of his retirement from first-class cricket in 2008.
Hick’s children played a big part in his decision to move to Australia
“I was playing beach cricket over here and in the second year my family came out,” he explains. “We brought the kids — they were 12 and 9 then — and after about ten days living on a XXXX tab the kids turned round to us at dinner one night and said, ‘Why do we live in England?’ And that was it. That was literally how it started. It hadn’t crossed our minds before that.
“We packed and said, ‘We’ll give it a go, see if I can find a job, and see how it works.’ ”
Off they went to Queensland but Hick did not travel specifically to coach. “I had done very, very little coaching back in England,” he says. “I did my level-four coaching award. If you had asked me when I was playing whether I would have ended up coaching, I would have said no.
“I didn’t really think about what plan B was going to be once I finished. But when I came to Australia I knew I had to use cricket as a way to get into work really. I didn’t know much else.”
So what happened?
“By pure chance I bumped into someone I had met many moons before, playing in a benefit game, and he was coaching one of the Brisbane grade sides and he said, ‘Come and give me a hand.’ I did. And that was about six or eight months after we had arrived here.”
The club was at Dauth Park in Beenleigh, Brisbane. Hick was clearly happy to start right at the bottom of the ladder. “Once I got into it here and the more I did it, the more I enjoyed it,” he says. “I was very fortunate where I started off in a grade side, and then I got a job under Troy Cooley at the national cricket academy in Brisbane.”
At first that job was only three sessions a week depending on the availability of Stuart Law, the high-performance coach, but then in 2013 a turn of events higher up the chain gave Hick his first real break in coaching.
Mickey Arthur was sacked as Australia coach. Darren Lehmann, then the Queensland coach, took his place and Law took Lehmann’s position. Hick took Law’s job as high-performance coach. He was on his way.
Hick played 65 Test matches and 120 ODIs for England
“With the likes of Greg Chappell and Troy Cooley I had some good people around me,” he says. “They gave me a lot of advice. They were great. It really opened my eyes. When you start coaching, you think, ‘This is what you’ve got to do,’ but it was suddenly a case of, ‘No, no, there are plenty of ways to do it.’ ”
Hick clearly learnt quickly. By 2016 he was installed in his present post after Michael Di Venuto’s decision to move to Surrey as their head coach. Going back to his career, I ask what Hick has taken from it into his coaching now.
“The main thing I draw from my playing career is, ‘Be careful what you say and don’t say too much.’ If you feel things aren’t going well, and you are hearing things from all sorts of directions, you start thinking, ‘I’ll do this to please that guy,’ ” he says. “If I look back with the benefit of hindsight I would like to have stayed firmer to what worked for me and the way I played.
“At this level — at any level really — the most important thing is the relationship. It is about having a bit of respect, earning the player’s respect and try to say less if you can. A player can get so muddled so easily.”
It is such sound advice for any coach. It is naturally in Hick’s character to do that but it still requires sound judgment to speak only at the right time. “I draw on a lot of things that I experienced but I don’t deliver them as in, ‘This is what happened to me. This is what I did,’ ” he says. “I am more like, ‘Leave the guy alone, give him some space.’
“I think sometimes the last thing a batter wants when he gets out playing a crap shot is to look for the coach out of the corner of his eye and think, ‘Ah, here comes the coach.’ At this level the guys know if they mess up or if they play a false shot. I feel they can digest it themselves and then maybe you can ask a question later in the day or even the next day.”
Hick had a distinctive style at the crease, with bat raised early. Does he preach that as a coach? “I have seen quite a few coaches try to coach people to play how they played,” he says. “I know when I started coaching I had an idea of what I thought a batsman should look like and I realised that, especially at this level, they are so gifted and talented that they do things differently.”
Hick describes Smith as a “little bit unorthodox” but adds that he “knows what he is doing”
Which brings us neatly to Steve Smith. For all the talk about his quirky technique, isn’t he in a good position when the ball is bowled? Solid base, head still, weight forward?
“He is a little bit unorthodox and very different but at the point of release his head is very still,” Hick says. “And he has a great eye and a great pair of hands. That compensates for not getting into the position of your old traditional player with top hand and bat next to pad. He’s someone you work with and you realise there are different ways to do the job.”
What is Smith like to work with, then? Tales of practice to excess are legion. “He just hits balls, he knows what he is doing,” Hick says. “He knows when he is hitting them well. He fiddles with his hands a little bit and he will suddenly say, ‘My hands are right,’ and a couple more and he might be done. Other days he wants plenty. I’d say he still hits more than anyone else.”
Hick would never take credit for Smith’s marvellous recent Ashes return — Smith mostly turns to Trent Woodhill, his former coach at the Sutherland club in Sydney — but he nonetheless enjoyed his success.
“It’s great to be able to sit in this position and watch him do so well,” Hick says. “He just adapts. That is what he does better than anyone else. He adapts to what is out there in front of him.”
Which England did not do in the Ashes. “Our bowlers made it really hard work for your batters,” he says. “The hundreds they got they had to work really hard for.”
The “your” is slightly shocking (I’m sure I played in a Test with Hick for England), but understandable. He is just doing his job. So will he be an Australian for good now? Is there any chance of a return to England, or even to Zimbabwe, where his parents, both in their eighties, and his sister and her family still live? He was linked with the Worcestershire job when Steve Rhodes departed last month.
“I never heard from them,” he says. “It would have been a tough decision but at this stage I don’t think I would have taken it. I’ve got this role until early 2020. I am really enjoying it. Australia from now on in will always be my home. We are living on the Gold Coast. The family love it. It’s just a lovely place to be. If I go back to England it will be for work and then I will come back.”
Hick loves Australia, and it appears to like him. You do wonder how that career might have panned out had he been Australian all along.

So both RR and SRH are in need of a marquee signing probably a batter as well to replace Smith and Warner........ can anyone think of one..... ummmmmm
In all seriousness, along with Root the players below are still looking for a team.
Guptill
Amla
Morgan
Hales
Ronchi - just won POTT in the PSL
Simmons

Not sure I can agree. What choice did CA have other than lengthy bans? To me there is a clear difference between using saliva with sugar in it to taking sandpaper onto the field. Saliva is allowed, sandpaper, bottle tops etc are not. Unless you're a die hard Australian fan you can't seriously defend the Aussie cricket team. Their attitude has got worse in recent times and this is just the icing on the cake. I'm all for playing hard but they do overstep the line, that really can't be denied surely? It was their choice to do this and they got caught, so have to accept the punishment in my opinion. They are a hugely talented side and it would be great if they could just be remembered as such, rather than remembered for all the wrong reasons.
-
I think the whole episode has been horrible and embarrassing to all involved plus Australian cricket and its fans. I agree that the bans are suitable, though think the investigation is flawed as either they have to give a blow by blow account, to show how only 3 people were involved or through the investigation punish the others that in my opinion must have been involved or at least knew and hence are to a degree guilty. Further I think cricket Australia needs to look at the actions of the team more broadly and take steps to correct it in the future and make clear to all involved how they are expected to act.
However the same applies to all the other boards. Taking a pocketful of sweets onto a pitch to lacquer the side of the ball is premeditated, throwing the ball into the pitch is a planned strategy not one man alone by chance etc. I think a broader debate should take place as to what is acceptable and what is not and then a much firmer approach taken by all boards to enforce it. Further all countries need to look at the behaviour of their players in order to improve the image of the game and thus how it is played in schools and grassroots and the enjoyment of the paying public. For example Kholi needs to be reigned in as does Jimmy Anderson. Only 2 examples of many.
Of course the attention is on Australia at the moment and quite correctly, however it is a much broader issue that for all cricket lovers needs to be addressed.
-
For me the whole cricket world needs to get a grip.
From the corrupt ECB to the blooming daft Australians getting caught.
Let be honest Australia are not the first side to do this.
Cricket needs to get its house in order.

Ball tampering is ball tampering. Nothing to do with anything else including sledging etc. And I’m not defending what they have done. They have cheated plain and simple but the punishment is sooo more extreme than what has happened in the past for the same crime. As I said if the punishment is a 12 month ban then fine but make it a consistent punishment for all who commit the same crime. At least CA have had the balls to hand out such extreme punishment unlike other governing bodies. To put it into context they have just banned the number 1 ranked batsman in the world and one of the most devastating opening batsman in test cricket. Can you imagine ECB doing that to Anderson, Broad and Root for the same offence or the BCCI doing that to Kohli? I can’t.
-
The ECB sacked KP for whistling.
-
In terms of attitude and sledging I agree there are a few times that the line gets crossed but not sure we want to see it eradicated from the game. Who can remember Mitch Johnson chirping Jimmy, Jimmy then yorking Ryan Harris with a beauty. Sure there are plenty of other examples where it has inly increased the drama of the game. We want to see two teams going at it hell for leather trying to the win the game surely. Some of the best games I have played in club cricket have been when there have been a few words said between the two teams makes it only sweeter when you win. I suposee the old rule of play hard and fair on the field and have a beer and laugh about it in the bar afterwards...

ECB or Cook, Strauss, Broad, Swann and co and same offence?

Plenty of stuff still to do for c.a and they have stated a broader review into the test team culture and behaviour needs to happen . Good . I do have a problem though with Lehmann getting off scott free -he bloody knew and everyone knows he knew . The walkie talkie business with Handscomb still needs explaining because it just looks sooo bad .
Smith and Bancroft should make new, more responsible and honest , media statements . And Warner needs to stop hiding and man up .
Ban lengths are fair BUT much heavier then any previous ball tampering bans ( although the icc bans have all been tiny slaps on the wrist).
I think this shows c.a has gotten this right , whereas other/previous boards haven't. Most importantly, the disparity between c.a and icc santion times shows c.a had/has ,at least, some integrity and balls - the icc has neither .
-
Fair play to CA for dishing out these bans. The whole culture needs to change. Still can't get my head around how no action has been taken on Lehman. Let's assume at best he didn't know, this has come under his watch. Do the Captain and VC not trust Lehman?
-

Yep agree with that.
I find it really interesting that whenever James Sutherland talks about Lehman he references Iain Roy's 'investigation' - completely distancing himself from the whole thing
-
If you use sandpaper on a ball, wouldn't you clearly notice the lines/marks on the ball it forms. How could the on field umpires not notice it. From what they said, on field umpires didn't see any change in condition of the ball.
-

Bancroft is that thick, he probably used the wrong side of the sandpaper
-
Lets take a moment to commend the aussies (the public, and the administrators, NOT the players obviously). No other country would be so ruthless against their superstars. They could have easily just let the pathetically weak ICC ban be enough (and given a mild “we will respect whatever the ICC decides” statement). But they’ve taken a stand, and not given two sh**s about who was involved. If you look at Sutherland’s statement today, he said they’ve been charged for MORE than ball tampering – really great response from CA and the aussie public. They’ve set a new standard for everyone else to follow.
-
So Lehmann didn't know, the leadership "group" was two players and none of the bowlers were in on the plan to use sandpaper on the ball?
Pull the other one.
If you use sandpaper on a ball, wouldn't you clearly notice the lines/marks on the ball it forms. How could the on field umpires not notice it. From what they said, on field umpires didn't see any change in condition of the ball.
Saw Mike Selvey on the TV the other day saying that an elite umpire informed him that the umpires often do what they can do avoid changing the ball and awarding penalty runs even if they see the ball has been tampered with. Apparently some umpires take out the rings they use to measure the women's cricket balls, so the ball doesn't go through them and they call for a new ball claiming the current one has gone out of shape.
-
The punishment handed out is not for ball-tampering, rather CA intent to appease Australia's fans and followers. Steve Smith will be back in a year or even earlier if he decides to appeal the punishment. Bancroft & Warner are likely to fade away from cricket. Lehman also might step down after the series sighting a fresh start for a new captain + coach => Langer or Gillespie for next Aussie coach!
-

Hmmmm...... given the evidence there's little c.a could do in terms of Lehmann . But having corroborating witnesses, who may well have vested interests in protecting Lehmann , doesnt do much to convince me personally . I still think Lehmann was a part of this . In any event , he is holding the team back from improving its culture and behaviour. Also , there are better candidates in Ponting , Langer and Gillespie floating around . C.a should use the opportunity to get rid of Lehmann and get one of those guys in to replace him .
-
Highly probable after the series is concluded Lehmann gets sacked. Get back to Australia conduct a review and Lehmann gets blamed for Australia's dreadful behaviour.
I'm fully expecting Smith and Bancroft to have their suspensions halved on appeal, but Warner will be exiled
-
So it’s come out that warner taught Bancroft how to do it.
How long has he been doing it for is the next question?
The lies about the sticky tape was also funny - no one believed that crap
-
Nobody believes Lehmann wasn't giving cover up orders over the walkie-talkie.
What else was he doing, ordering a Meat Feast with stuffed crust?
Jokers, the bloody lot of them
-
Smith looks like a broken man in the video of him leaving the airport.
-
Probably realised he's lost the most important job in Aus, outside of being PM, probably all his sponsors and a (No Swearing Please)-ton of cash.
Along with his reputation
-
Hussain made a good point - it’s hard to believe that none of the bowlers were involved
Smith’s probably lost over £2.5m from being banned in those 12 months. Let that figure settle in.
-
Read that Smith and Warner each where earning close to $5M per year, wouldn't be surprised if Warner gets an CPL and BPL deal
-
Personally I think the bans are fair when you add in the reputational and financial punishments that will follow in terms of public receptions and loss of income in the coming years.
I have no doubt Smith will play test cricket again as soon as his Ban is up. Warner I think will now just be a T20 player abroad.
I do also think a lot of county teams will break the bank to sign them up as they could now play the whole summer here including 4day, 1day and T20 Comps and keep there profiles in cricket terms high.
Give it a few months it will blow over for them but a few more heads may role at some point as not buying this bowers are innocent garbage they would have known as soon as the ball was in there hands.
-
Smith looks like a broken man in the video of him leaving the airport.
He was probably thinking "why did I listen to the thick bloke with a Napoleon complex"?
-

For every one who likes verbals there is another who doesn’t. Who gets to decide if it’s acceptable?? As always, one mans ‘banter’ is abuse/offensive to another. Hence the problem with sledging in the modern era.
I am sure people will say ‘man up’ but sadly sledging has nothing to do with being a man or competitive.. it really is simply verbal abuse by those who have no way to control themselves.
There are the odd funny lines but they are so rare it’s not worth all the tripe. As Dave says, Cricket simply needs to sort it’s house out with all the unpleasantness
-
Yeah, pretty disappointing with Australia's attitude over the years, and it has all just come to a head this series. I know the line for what constitutes 'sportsmanship' in regards to ball tampering has probably been abused by most countries have the years, but I think this was more than just particular incident.
Australian cricket will recover, hopefully with a less confronting ego to it. I think it will take time for Australia to start playing good cricket again, but hopefully we use this time to blood some young batsman and build a good batting list for the future. I do hope Steve Smith returns, which I think is likely, but you never know. Having a year away from cricket may do his career some good in the long run. And we do have a good bowling attack fro the future. I think Warner's career may be over, which is sad because he scored 21 tests centuries at a fairly good SR.
I don't know the ins and out of the Australian squad, but perhaps a change over of key coaching and management people too ? Develop a better cricket ethos but also try to win ?
-
Taking something positive out of all this! What a turnaround for Tim Paine!
Couldn’t get in Tasmania’s first team and struggling in the 2s
Shock (and mocked) pick for the ashes now Australia’s captain!
Let’s hope he can restore some pride in the baggy green!
-
There is a lot of value at times like these in appointing someone who knows the value of the badge because it wasn't just given to them easy.
-
1. The explanation for Lehmann not knowing seems fair. It explains the pictures - but jeez he made it look suspicious with his hand covering the walkie talkie and then trying to lower it when caught on camera. As for going forward, he in no way is the right man to change the way Aussies play cricket. His past record shows that he was definitely in favour of butting the line, and on several (known) occasions went over it himself.
2. Bancroft gets 9 months - wrong. Should be the same as Smith. Yes he's young and he was possibly pressured into it by Warner BUT he can make his own decisions. In hindsight, had he said no and had suffered in the team as a result, he could have whistleblown and received a lot of support by Aussie fans, authorities and teammates. Don't forget, he also lied to the umpires when asked to explain things on field, and then lied to the press and public after caught by denying it was sandpaper. Seems his morals are skewed.
3. Smith's punishment - probably just about right/bit harsh. It now looks as if the role he played was passive - "Don't tell me about it guys. I don't want to know". He was also passive in taking the heat - refusing to explain who was in the leadership group - protecting his teammates. What should he have done as captain? Find out what they were planning, and then telling them to stop straight away instead of metaphorically holding his hands to his ears.
4. As for Warner. Maybe he's a good Dad. Maybe he's good with his friends and family. What he is not good at is being sporting, being a leader, being a good teammate and being an ambassador for cricket. He has a history going back to his really early cricket career e.g. pushing a fellow player down the stairs, punching another. He should have been banned for life from cricket - all grades, given some help with his issues and in sorting out an alternate career.
5. My preference was still for the whole team to be banned for a year (because past and present more than just these three have shown poor sportsmanship, and failed to speak up about things that we do not know about yet - if ever). As I said earlier, by taking on the Aussies schedule, associate teams who have very few matches post WCQ would get more competitive games and thus learn more, and continue the fan momentum that the WCQ built, leading to growth of cricket in those countries. Something good for the whole game coming out of something bad for the whole game.
-
There is a lot of value at times like these in appointing someone who knows the value of the badge because it wasn't just given to them easy.
Totally agree, this bad incident is an opportunity for Australia to rethink how they have behaved on the field. The bans are about right in my book, including a lesser sentence for the mule Bancroft. It's the senior players...at the moment just a couple of them, who appear to be responsible.
If you read any social media and believe it, it's Warner that is the real problem, fantastic ability no doubt, but a cricketer disliked and not just by English fans but by his own team.whether this is accurate who knows.
Lehmann has had what he said to be verified by someone else, I find it hard to believe myself he did not know what was going in, but he can't be hung without any real proof.
As for Smith he may be a naive captain, a bit like Root is, again, if what we read is true(Jim maxwell)
He will have another chance to play for his Country and they all have the right of appeal-as they should with anything like this.
I think this could turn out to be a blessing for Australia, everyone wants to win but they need to get back on the right side of the line. All teams push this line, England included probably, but they went over it for sure.
Warner I think may be finished, if it's true, dressing rooms are hard places to get back into once this happens.right or wrong there is a similarity with KP.
-
Whole thing stinks.
First it was tape then it was sandpaper 3 days later.
First the leadership team and then 3 batsman only.
Australia getting it swing early for the ashes and SA.
The alleged tip off to the cameras to watch the aussies.
The coach going mute and then denying all knowledge.
None of the bowlers suspected anything?
One rumour is the 3 have stuck to their stories and refuse to implicate anybody else. Something isn't being told.
-
Maybe it was in inside job by CA to get rid of Warner, that picked up some unfortunate collateral... :D :D :D
-
Has anyone seen the footage of Smith being bundled out of the South African airport?
I'm seriously not ok with this. The man's being vilified like a (No Swearing Please) murderer for cheating at a game of cricket.
-
Maybe it was in inside job by CA to get rid of Warner, that picked up some unfortunate collateral... :D :D :D
I'm sure it was an upside for cricket Australia.
I think the whole tape, sugar, granules, sandpaper mix is in some form Australia's secret to reverse swing and if it all came out most of team and coaching staff would be in trouble. Can't help thinking those 3 have taken one for the team.
-
I do not believe that Lehmann knew this was happening until the camera's picked up on it and the broadcaster said it. I think the calls for his sacking are over the top. Based on the sanctions imposed if he was involved or anyone else they would have been done.
Conspiring to cheat brings the game into disrepute and the punishment fits the crime. The entire series has been played with great venom and and emotion and the team leadership was unable to play without resorting to this. Sandpaper is a hell of a lot worse than mints, sugar, sunscreen etc as reverse swing is so lethal.
Now to quote "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone...." John 8:7. Lets not be all high and mighty about our respective countries never trying this. I hope other countries have the balls to wipe this out from the international game as it ruins the game.

Wonder how Smith and Bancy feel about Warner right now. Though they were part of it and could have said No, they would surely hate him for letting them into this mess..It is highly likely at least a few of the other players might have known about it but just didn't take part in the actual implementation so no one else got impacted..
-
A day after Australia captain Steve Smith and vice-skipper David Warner were handed out a one-year ban for ball-tampering, Warner tweeted his apology to his country, the game of cricket and his fans across the word.
"To cricket fans in Australia and all over the world: I am currently on my way to Sydney. Mistakes have been made which have damaged cricket. I apologise for my part and take responsibility for it. I understand the distress this has caused to the sport and its fans. It's a stain on the game we all love and I have loved since I was a boy. I need to take a deep breath and spend time with my family, friends and trusted advisors. You will hear from me in a few days."
Cameron Bancroft, who carried out the cheating in South Africa, was given a nine-month ban by Cricket Australia.
-
Has anyone seen the footage of Smith being bundled out of the South African airport?

I agree and watching the press conference it cricket that needs to get itself in order.
Nobody died man its a sport they cheated it the world leadership needs to get a bloody grip of players but some of this crap now is way way over the top.
I do not like either Smith OR Warner but this is plain over the top crap.
ICC is corrupt with the way series are handed out they have sold out, they should get the good of the game back up over money and all powerful boards.
Yes the banned 3 should be punished but they way he was hounded out of the country and all the press stuff it like there criminals.
There crime was getting caught alerning a ball is altering a ball either through sweets or sticky tape i mean sandpaper.
There are alot of players out there so happy they have not been caught (all cricketing nations are gulity) because cricket as a whole is gulity and it time the great game was brought back to people

So Smith and Bancroft issue public apologies this morning yet the coward Warner goes into hiding. Warner is a cancer

Pretty sure he has offered an apology (albeit via Twitter) and has promised a full one once he is back in Oz.
I mean it is only 3 posts up......

You think smith and Bancroft wanted to do an interview straight of the plane?
Warner wants the full whammy of a press conference outside his house.
-
Smith mentioned this was the first time it happened - yeah right. Then again he’s not going to say anything but that
-
Smith's performance was a bit pathetic really.

They’re only sorry they got caught, these are professional cricketers and adults who are aware of the risks and knew what they were doing.

that is why its called a "mistake".... was definitely a tough presser to watch. feel for him.

Its one thing to be aware of the risk, that of being caught. And a complete other thing to have even the slightest idea of the actual consequence once your caught. Because these guys clearly had nf idea! In short, because the world has never imploded quite like it has on this occasion.
-
Lehmann to step down as coach. Odd decision if he wasn’t involved???
-
Lehmann gone.....
-
that is why its called a "mistake".... was definitely a tough presser to watch. feel for him.
For me a mistake is an accident, this was pre planned and a concious choice to do it.
Like others have said, it’s unlikely this is the first time it’s gone on, just the first time they got busted!
I’m probably being overly harsh, but given the behaviour of the Aussie team over the past few years my sympathy is really lacking
-
Shows how little support warner has from former players Harris, Clarke, and M.johnson. All supporting smith and Bancroft but not warner.
Few of the ex England folk like prior and trott digging the knife into warner
-
I think that's a satisfactory end to me, though I would have reduced Smith's suspension to 9 months and Bancroft's to 6 months.
Lehmann gets to go on his own terms, which is fair enough. He has to be partly responsible for the loss of control of the side over time.
Warner deserves everything he gets. The fact he hasn't yet addressed the press suggests he won't be going quietly- I expect there to be fireworks.
Smith gets a degree of sympathy from me, and he's clearly seriously remorseful which is something. He'll be back.
Bancroft is little more than a stooge, 9 months feels too long.
We'll never know the truth of whether there was previous ball-tampering or other unsavoury actions from this Australian side, but I think an appropriate level of justice has been done.
Time to finally focus on the cricket.
-
Lehmann gone.....
Lehmann steps down....... Aussies next game is a One Day Warm Up against Sussex on June 9th - before the ODI series against us.
So they have a little bit of time to think about who the new coach will be.
-
Sutherland has called a press conference for 2.45pm
He might go too....
-
Ponting or langer as replacements. Pontings already been doing the t20 stuff this winter.
Both have kept quiet during this whole issue
-
Gillespie? Must be the favourite.
-
Bet Gillespie is thrilled he's in a 2 year contract with Sussex now!!
He would have been fantastic, and probably will end up with either Aus or England.
-
Smith's press conference wasn't an easy watch..... Warner should be ashamed.
-
Smith's press conference wasn't an easy watch..... Warner should be ashamed.
made Kim Hughes look positively macho. You can;t do the time etc...
-
It'll be Larger who replaces Lehman. He's been groomed to be the natural successor for a long time.
-
I'm sure there are few Australians that are more than qualified and would be a great coach for Australia. Langer and Gillespie for example. But I wonder if it would be smarter if we got a overseas coach with perhaps not well known to the public, but top of the game in regards to coaching and management.
-
You can have Bayliss for tests!
-
"Cricket is the greatest game in the world" - Steven Smith.
I saw the apology press conference. He made a mistake. He is a brave man to own up to his mistake and ask for forgiveness. Lets give that man a brake. I for one will look forward to his return and him breaking records.
This event calls for team AUS (and others) to re-evaluate their "war" mentality in Test cricket and cricket in general. Enough of this sledging nonsense. Just shut up and play cricket. Show off your SKILLS if you want to but keep your mouth shut. Idiots!
-
Back to the cricket - SA bat first. No starc for the Aussies.
Handscomb, renshaw and burns in - wow this Aussie batting line up looks weak!
Bit disappointed Maxwell didn’t get a game
-
Starc has a stress fracture in his leg. That's him done until the Australian home summer
-
Shame starcs out, I like his bowling a lot
-
Shame starcs out, I like his bowling a lot
With or without a tampered ball :D. Wouldve been a nice comparasion to see how much the ball reversed without sandpaper and how many overs it would’ve taken
-
Absolutely
That questions gonna rage on for years now
Tarnished Aussie cricket without question
-
The sand paper gate is gonna be one of those moments in cricket that ever fan and non fan will know and mention.
Just like tiger woods and his shout of “get in the hole”
Every time a new game is mentioned, someone will mention the dam sandpaper in some way.
-
Why doesn’t Cummins get the new ball??
-
Skillful bowling from Lyon. Elgar clueless against spin again
-
This boy Markram can really play
-
Australia getting licked. Bowling looks toothless. Sayers looks like a second division dobber
-
Amla looks like he’s got one year max left in him.
Time for Ab to feast
-
Australia getting licked. Bowling looks toothless. Sayers looks like a second division dobber
Very floaty bowling, as Boycott would say "buffet bowling"
-
4th hundred for Markram in only 19 innings. Throw in a couple of 90s as well. Solid start to a career
-
Why was everyone frothing over Sayers getting selected in the squad?
He's been steady enough but I haven't seen anything that makes me think he'll take many wickets at international level. He's a bit like a human bowling machine
-
Amla looks gone to me. When was the last time he played meaningful innings?
-
Amla looks gone to me. When was the last time he played meaningful innings?
That time when he made that massive innings at the Oval I think?
-
Didn’t broad make a remark about Aussies bowling reserves?
Sayers bowling with the keeper up at 120kph. Where’s the rest of the Aussie bowlers??
Aussies lose both reviews
-
4th hundred for Markram in only 19 innings. Throw in a couple of 90s as well. Solid start to a career
Warne was incredibly complimentary about him, and Rabada, at the lunch break. Real talent.
-
Amla looks gone to me. When was the last time he played meaningful innings?
You reckon Amla is out of nick.... Du Plessis is having an absolute shocker at the moment
-
That Markram, how exciting for SA!
-
Commentators not happy with sayers taking the new ball ahead of Cummings. Valid point though but they’ve got to cut Paine a bit of slack, 1st test and all
-
What do the commentators know. Sayers picks up Ab as his first wicket
-
All those bowlers moaning about bats too good. Well Rabada was just out because the ball leapt off his bat to the fielder!
-
AB and our Joe seem to have the same issue can't convert 50s to 100s
-
Ab made a ton a couple of tests ago
-
Ab made a ton a couple of tests ago
Tongue in cheek my friend
-
SA is having a good run with their young talent. Bevuma. Rabbada. Markram. This a good Test talent!
-
Looks like a cracked thumb there.
-
SA tail smashing the Aussies around. If only the Aussies had a left arm quick who could reverse it a mile (sandpaper aided) to knock over the tail
-
Don’t care how tainted this match/series is, I’m gutted to Bavuma. Stranded on 95.
And once again though Cummins comes on while the Aussies looks toothless and just supplies heat!
-
Looks like South Africa's 48 year wait to beat Australia at home will come an end in a few days time. South Africa's 488 should close Australia's hopes of a series saving win. Poor Bavuma stranded on 95*, a well deserved 5fer for the lionhearted Cummins
-
Every international side must be lining up to play the Aussies right now.
Chance for someone in this Aussie side to cement their place in the batting line up.
-
Renshaw goes...him and khawaja just look like sitting ducks. Techniques all over the shop. Clueless against a bit of movement
-
THat looked ugly
3 down.
Morkel clapped in by Aussies, showed they didn’t expect him to bat again. Already resigned to a loss by an innings.’
-
Worst top 6 in Australian history?
-
Nothing really the Australians can do tbh. They picked young Renshaw and Burns as they where piling the runs up in the Sheffield Shield, but the South African attack is a fair bit than what they've faced in the Shield
-
Renshaw goes...him and khawaja just look like sitting ducks. Techniques all over the shop. Clueless against a bit of movement
Show me a top six inthe world that can cope with anything but a feather bed !! That’s the modern player for yOu
-
As a keeper I can tell you do not underestimate how good that catch De Kock just took off Philander standing up down the leg slide! Wow!
-
Great take by QDK to get rid of Khawaja. Philander in the wickets again.
-
The cricket boards need to give priority to Test cricket and push T-20 for aging and retired international cricketers. That measure will make room for young cricketers to first class cricket with red ball and move the aging group to "fun" (t-20) cricket. With these kind of results, Test cricket is going to stay. Why not prepare cricketers who can cope with rigors of Test cricket.
-
Goes from bad to worse. 106-6
Can’t imagine SA enforcing the follow on, bat again and grind the Aussies down
-
That de Kok catch off Khawaja was all wrong. Should have gone with his hands and tried to watch the ball as long as possible. Instead he took a step right and followed with hands. Meant that he lost sight of ball from bounce onwards. He keeps totally opposite to the rule book but gets the job done!
-

There isn't a right or wrong way
-
There isn't a right or wrong way
Amen.
-
Starting to feel for the Aussies a bit now,Sheesh...
Not! :D
-
What the hell have the coaches done to renshaw!! Sure he wasn’t perfect but he was a decent opener who could occupy the crease. Now he goes at everything, chases balls and go hard at the ball.. Jesus..
I’m wondering if he was told to ‘expand his game’ like ‘we’ told Hameed too and jus toile Hameeed... it’s ruining him
-
Did we do that to Hameed? If that's the case I'm fuming! Once Cook is gone we could do with someone who books in for bed and breakfast
-
Did hammed need to expand his game?
He was a test opener that did a decent job for such a young lad opening in tests.
Then when he batted 7, because he had a broken thumb, he showed his game was expanded and he could attack, taking apart one of the worlds best spinners.
Coaches should just let natural talent mature. Work on there strong points, stop trying to change people’s games.
-
You need test batters who are willing to bat long. There is a reason that test cricket lasts for 5 days.
-
You need test batters who are willing to bat long. There is a reason that test cricket lasts for 5 days.
There is also a reason why tests very rarely now last five days. I read that article about Graeme Hick and he gave the impression that he is a less is more kind of coach which is ideal-he seems quite laid back- I can't imagine Ramprakash being the same-saw him working with Westley and that went well!
-
Paine has fractured his thumb.
-
Paine has fractured his thumb.
If he does something special with the bat now or in the match Australia will love him forever
-
Paine and Cummings doing alright his morning. Showing some fight.
Have to ask why Paine has took so long to get a decent run?
He doesn’t look out of his depth as a test number 7, he’s far superior with the gloves to wade and Neville.
And the fact he is now captain, shows there’s huge respect for him amongst the aus ranks.
Team selection baffles me.
-
Morkel with a side strain. South Africa miles ahead but only 3 bowlers
-

Paine couldn't buy a run in fc for a long time after his multiple surgeries on his broken right hand.
-
I think Australia should consider moving Paine up to 5 in the absence of Smith. Maxwell at 6 and M Marsh at 7.
Cummins is going to be pretty decent when it's all says and done

Smashed his fingers up and didn’t really recover confidence quickly. He also didn’t score any First class runs for a long while, hence why his test selection this time was out of the blue.
-
Cummins love affair with the bullring continues. Both his 5fers on this ground and now a maiden Test fifty.
-
Is Chad Sayers the Australian version of Jon Lewis or maybe Dominic Cork??
-
How good is Aiden Markram? 1000 runs in 18 innings averaging nearly 59 at the age of 23, he's got 3 50s and 4 100s too. Guy looks very special indeed.
-
Patrick Cummins looks to be on fumes yet he's still more potent than the Rest of the Australian attack combined.
-
Faf seizing his chance to get some much needed runs. Was a walking wicket before this innings.
Then again the Aussies don’t look interested
-
Getting bored now! South Africa miles ahead. Still just sending batsmen out.
Also Cummins still making an impact when the other Aussie bowlers look flat.
Still don’t get why he isn’t having the new ball. Sayers is not good enough.
-
South Africa lead by 600
Apparently still batting as Morkel, and Rabada both struggling with injuries.
Plus philander(although batting) has a heavily strapped quad.
If SA all out, could be maharaj and elgar opening bowling and bowling through till close of play.
-
Australia set 612 to win. Philander and Rabada have opened the bowling.
-

If only the Aussies had Smith Warner and BannedCroft I'd back then to do this!
-
Australia set 612 to win. Philander and Rabada have opened the bowling.
Yep. Seems what was coming out of sa dressing room was guff.
Rabada looking very dangerous.
-
Renshaw looks like he’s completely ruined his technique. He’s lucky that he’s already been dropped but going at the ball with hard hands.
-
Morkel into the attack and picks up a wicket in his second over.
-
Khawaja is awful! Can only bat on Aussie roads!
-
Australia got some decisions to make regarding the composition of their batting line up. Naturally young Renshaw and Burns deserve a run in the side being the best pair from the Sheffield shield. Khawaja is really hopeless. I think they need to get Maxwell in but he's more a 5/6. Shaun Marsh also isn't exactly solid.
They obviously go to the Middle East next and maxwell should be in the XI.
Renshaw
Burns
Paine (c)
Handscombe
Maxwell
M Marsh
Carey (w/k)
Cummins
Agar
Lyon
Hazlewood
Note this is only for the upcoming series in UAE. I'm can't see it even possible that Paine bats up the order, captains and keeper. He'll be shattered after one match.
-
As good a player as Paine looks-when did Paine last score a ton?Don't think he will bat three!
-
Renshaw looks like he’s completely ruined his technique. He’s lucky that he’s already been dropped but going at the ball with hard hands.
He hasn’t ruined it.. the coaches have by telling him he had to attack more. We’ve done the same damage to hameed
-
As good a player as Paine looks-when did Paine last score a ton?Don't think he will bat three!
I think Paine's technique is solid to bat at 3, but he could slot in at 4 or 5. But there's not many options for 3. Maxwell does it for Victoria but his technique is loose
-
As good a player as Paine looks-when did Paine last score a ton?Don't think he will bat three!
I think the main reason he hasn’t scored a ton is because he has been batting with the lower order and just trying to survive. He definitely needs to move up the order a couple of places I think. In my opinion He has done a terrific job with the bat considering.
-
Khawaja is awful! Can only bat on Aussie roads!
He hasn’t been great in this series but to be fair how can you give that lbw out straight up. There is no way the umpire could be sure it would have hit the stumps. He is 12 inches outside off stump. Just a desperate Aussie here haha
-

Was a (No Swearing Please) call for an aussie, but tbf live it looked to be hitting the stumps, despite how far it still had to go. Issue is did he or didn't he play a shot? That decision is more subjective and a grey area. Technically he did, not a very good one though. To me it looked like he had no intention of trying to hit it but still offered some form of shot to try cover his back
-
Wow, Aussies 13-6 this morning. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch!
-
Wow, Aussies 13-6 this morning. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch!
I was desperate for the 3 new batsmen to do well...! Never mind :o
-
South African bowling attack isn't to bad is it? Lose Morkel, but gain Steyn again...
South Africa far too strong for Australia especially after the two best batsmen where exiled.

I think SA were too good for them even before losing those 2
