Majid,
There is concept of Pro level bats. I have just spent 15 days in Pakistan in all the big brands factories and if you ask them they have never heard of any bats we call Pro Level bats. I have also read in varios places that if the stamp is high or lower on a bat, it is pro level. It is all rubbish as you can ask Manufacturer where u want to have their stamp put on.
Regards
Asad

In the middle of refurbishing this one. I count 21 grains on close inspection under the light. The discolouration is not heartwood, i think the willow has been stained by something. Will work on it again tomorrow, and should get the stains out.
And this bat is a 1990's Hunts County Harrow (stickers removed, fully sanded)

here is my post for the best grains
(1) Newbery GT. A beast of a bat. Unfortunately have to let it go as it is bit heavy for me. This was the one made for one of the many Pros Newbery makes bats for. The ping is supreme.
(2) UZU C6+: One it will be using this season. Got from Asad (ASSports). Very meaty bats 2.11 with a 2.5oz grip. Picks up like a feather. Top bats. Probably at par with the Pro bat above.

-
Is that Kashmir Willow or English Willow?
You know it's English Willow Tom.
-
That bat actually looks really nice, like the stickers aswell.
-
How do I? To me it looks to what a Kashmir bat looks like, otherwise I wouldn't have asked the question.
The white willow and not very clear grains look like the 'EWNI' I saw at Mohit's place.

-
You serious mate? I can't see much under the cherries but doesn't look anything spoecial.
-
Didn't sound funny to me, look at where the scuff sheet ends mate
-
i think the scuff sheet goes down to the bottom of the bat and that is some fibre glass tape over the top? Might be wrong though, and if I am then that certainly is a sweet looking bat!
-
I can't even see the grains, I'm on my mobile but not very clear at all!
-
Aah looking at it that way, it changes my mind, I'm not sure either way?! But if not it certainly is a sweet looking bat.
-
The tape at the bottom has been mistaken for grains, sadly that it not allowed.....
-
I bet you have some bats that would stonk their way to the number one spot on best grains by now eh Mike?
-
How many bats do you personally own mike?
-
The grains at the top of the scuff sheet look pretty nice.
-
Yeah but not anywhere near any of the bats on here! Disappointing, thought that was some bat!
-
I've had 30+ but the best I have here is 21 all sapwood.
-
here is my bats
1st bat 12 grains
middle bat 13/14 grains
last bat 19 grains

aman what happens to all the bats you buy ?
-
i use them and then i get some more
and then keep them for memories
-
Reply #20 September 9, 2008 re CA Plus 10000
Nice looking bat(s) but why put "Ready To Play" on the Sticker?
If it wasn't ready to play do they put a "Not Ready To Play" sticker on the bat?
Seems a bit superfluous to me. Suspect whoever is labelling the bat(s) means
well but not sure it really achieves anything?
-
Lovely looking bats Aman, as good a collection as I've seen.
-
thanks talisman really appreciate it coming from you as you see alot of bats all the time
-
Aman the grains on your bats are superb. Did you get your bats from India?
-
i got them custom made through Yash and then sent to me direct from the SS factory

-
Big shape
-
It's pretty concave mate hence the weight is only 2lb 10......Joy to bat with mind!!!
-
Tailsman
Can i pm you for a bit of advise?

Those grains are really straight and defined especially thinking about the lighting conditions
-
Pietersen's looked good in the last test
-
When a team mate receives his CoR3 Custom Pro next week I shall have a look at the grains on that :D

Too many
-
aswani cricket what bat is that bud
-
It's a BAS Shadow LE ... just sold to a guy in Australia
-
looks bloody nice that BAs
-
Yes, has superb pickup and ping and it's rare to get so many straight grains ... not my personal preference, but still one of those bats you don't want to get rid of ...
-
I count 29 grains?
-
i made it 26? however many it is, its a lot of grains :)
-
how much did this bat go for aswani????
-
Can't really divulge the price procricket, sorry
-
not a problem aswani if you get another cracker like that pm me please
-
Got a photo of the whole face? love grains like that, 24 and look straight.
-
Half heartwood as well! Pro bat by the looks of it...
-
Could well be but got to see the whole picture, plus know if it has been pressed well.
-
I'd laugh if it had a beast of a butterfly stain covering half of the top bit and the grains went so wavy it was unreal. Butt i very much doubt this ;) :) looks a beut!!!
-
Here's a bat I bought about 10 days ago. Needs a bit of TLC before its debut.
-
30 plus - amazing! What bat is this? Guessing from the toe-guard it may have been sourced from India. Lovely clean looking grains, so rare to see grains like that.........a firm contender for the number one spot!
-
Looks like a Robinsons toe/face.
-
It is indeed a Robinsons Sports bat, superb spot! (How?)
I will review it soon, bought it from Quantum Cricket, Richard provides excellent service.
-
looks a bloody good bat mate
-
Great spot from Tom, likely because the Caribee model is one of the best value bats around as it has a minimum quantity of grains, 14/15 or something like that and will have a Yellow toe guard. I've seen a couple of beauties but the ones on the website don't look anything like this one.
-
Robinson's Triumph?
-
Ahhh thats the winner in my eyes!
-
Ahhh thats the winner in my eyes!
Too many for me ;)
-
Its funny how you fall into almost 2 grains camps.
1) About 8-15 well defined straight grains
or
2) You look for as many grains as you can and are only happy with 20+.
Although I have to say that Robbinsons looks a beaut of a bat!
-
I unfortunately won't be using it any time soon now, cut my index finger quite badly at nets. I'll spare everyone the details but I won't be playing cricket for a few weeks.
-
Agree kenbiroo, I always look for 8/9 straight grains as I find that these have always been the best performers for me.
-
Agree kenbiroo, I always look for 8/9 straight grains as I find that these have always been the best performers for me.
I was originally a 10 ish grain man, but my current bat has 20+ and its truly pinging at the moment, I just hope that it lasts like it is all season as its 3/4 heartwood. So i think I might be a 20+ convert!
-
8-12 grains is my preference, this often gives a good balence between performance and durability
-
(http://i43.tinypic.com/5arxxe.jpg)
-
Which bat is that theman303?
-
It looks like a SS Platinum Reserve
-
yes SS Platinum
-
Ohh okay thanks Ashvir and theman303.

-
slazenger just dont make em like they used to shill!
-
I agree - i wouldnt go near a slaz with a barge pole right now, since they started making the bats in India i think that the quality of the bats has decreased significantly. Not a slur on Indian batmakers by the way, just from what i have seen i have been massively dissapointed (especially the top of the range bats)
-
yeah agreed although a team mate of mine has a pure blade and it pings like hell!

Did you use it when you got your duck last week?
-
Everyone has a bad day mate :) You should know, you have one every Saturday!
-
Touche, this season has started somewhat shockingly.
Am blaming that on the fact I had barely any preparation due to football and then I've not managed to play any number of consecutive games because of exams.
Starts for real this Saturday :p
-
Fair enough mate! Who you playing?
-
Gorran at home. Should be decent, have asked them for an early start so we can be finished for the England game haha.
-
how does mine compare?

-
That looks very nice mate, tad too much heartwood for me personally though. What bat is it?
-
That Robinson's bat has some miniscule cracks after knocking in, I'm too scared to use it against a cricket ball in case it disintegrates.
Display purposes only.

Interesting, the Robinson's bat I have is very soft and I am not sure about the pressing it has had - I am thinking of taking it to a shop and have them "knock it in" for me with a press. To be fair I was warned before I bought the bat that the pressing on Indian bats. Pics here.. http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=5070.msg79971#msg79971
-
I'd be very gentle, use it only against an old ball in nets. take your time knocking it in. I think I was perhaps a little aggressive early on with the mallet.
-

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee39/boucherk_2007/DSC02046.jpg
I presume this is Bulldog? Looks nice and very similar to mines
-
yup sure is

That RS is similar to a team mates, which snapped horribly second game

Sounds terrible!! Still hopefully it will be a go-er

Humm time - not something I have much of at the moment, as a result the bat is spending rather a lot of time in my garage and not much time in the nets!!
-
how does mine compare?

Liking it looks pretty nice, pretty large stain near the toe though, and the grains aren't dead straight but something about the bat just looks good cant put my finger quite on it though :P looks a good stick!

Some bats I have in at the moment or have recently sold:
-
Those black cats look really nice charlie
-
there ok but not no winners in my eye i like a nice clean face no heartwood
-
I concur Dave-o-tron - not a heartwood fan at all.
I like my bats like I like my women: thick bottomed with shapely shoulders and clean faces.
-

Fair few grains on that last one - looks good! What bat is it?
I have what i think is an absolute stunning piece of timber......12/13 straight sapwood grains and weighing in at 2.9. Enjoy these grains as they dont come around very often........

i do like this surely not i like a lekka
looks similar to the hick chase on the front
-
Nice Lekka there SillyShilly - really like the spacing of the grains, between 8 and 15 seems a decent number for me.
The bat I posted was an old Slazenger V600 that a teammate didn't want anymore, I cleaned it up before giving it to a cricket charity in Sri Lanka. It didn't have much of a middle, looked alright though when I'd removed all the tape and muck, he didn't really look after it.
-
Hi folks
Thought I would put these two up.
3lb 3oz on the left and 13 grains. 3lb 2oz and 15 grains on the right.
Lovely bit of heartwood on each bat.
Talisman is responsible for the beautiful cadbury stckered Zeus - Thanks again Mike ;)

-
dom how much for that lekka, with my discount please :)
-
Both 3lb+ bats!!! Jeez, I bet they scare bowlers! :(
-
Ha ha, yes Pete! The Grizzly has had a lot of comments this season. It really does go - and so do my wrists the morning after!!
-
Proverbial railway sleepers!! :o
-
Proverbial railway sleepers!! :o
not that proverbial tbh
-
Tree on a stick well guess it counts as a work out swinging those around who needs weights lol
-
Ha ha, yes Pete! The Grizzly has had a lot of comments this season. It really does go - and so do my wrists the morning after!!
Im sure its just the bats causing said wrist problems
-
And the tone has been lowered lol was only a matter of time
-
I do have a few 3lb+ bats, and am lucky enough to be big enough to use them that heavy without wrist problems (obviously I've had many years of wrist strengthening in the past! ;) ) but I'm getting on so well with 2'13 that I am not tempted yet!
Maybe in the nets I'll give the beasts a go and see what I've been missing out on! ;)
-
(http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq167/tom_ayrtek/CIMG1784.jpg)
This one was 2.13 I think was a bit of a beast that has scored a fair few runs for the lad who had it this season!!
-
What a beauty!
I like heartwood and that's got plenty!!
-
Yeh plenty of grains as well as a good dose of heartwood to it! Got some other pics a bit closer up of it somewhere but prob on my laptop rather than iPhone
-
Billy's got a better average with it though ;)
-
http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/image/480404.html?page=1
Hussey's I'm guessing. Stunner though!
-
managed to find the close up pic of the one i had as posted above.....
-
Who did that go too
-
one of the lads at Colseys club
-
Favouristism for the local lads ay I see
-
ayrtek, do you have anymore bats like that plenty of grains and heartwood, that go like trains as they are my kinda bats ;)
especially after that stunna i got from kieron
-
more 1st come 1st served mate....a few on the forum have got the bats now though ;)
I havent got any others like than in at the moment as this was just one of the 10 i had off of talisman at the start of the season, depends what mike gets his hands on and what weight range they are in as they are graded on performance not looks, although im sure people would pay a few quid extra for one of the above ;)
-
Bought this last year and will continue to use it next year. Fabulous bat!
-
That one of Tom's got almost 1000 this year, Ayrteks at our club (4 of them) got a combined total of over 4900 runs
-
Not too bad then in the 1st season...good job not too many of those runs were scored when playing against me lol
-
Well it would've gone up if I had played you ;)
-
Why is everyone obsessed with the number of grains? I'm not always sure that it does make a bat look better...
-
all mine have 7-8 on em i think :) cant afford all these posh ones with all these grains
-
Most i have is the gt with 12/13, but that doesn look crammed, i like 9-10 straight, evenly spaced grains if we are talking look alone, think it looks more solid and just neater than 20+ crammed in!!
-
I believe my bat has 11. The most I've had on a bat.
-
not bad set of grains think was 19 the last time i counted
(http://i957.photobucket.com/albums/ae59/ajer2000/673a5c8c.jpg?t=1287345010)
-
I have a 20 grainer with about 5 heartwood and no blemishes which I will put up soon :)
-
this has some heartwood but not bad for a size 5 as is my sons xmas present
-
Looks nice mate ;) don't let him outscore u with it lol
-
Well got my batting trophy last night so put it next to his county champions trophy to make myself feel better lol
-
Haha good work mate....only got a medal at our end of season league dinner :(
-
Only bad thing was I ended up drinking out of it as it's a decent size cup still a great night from what I remember as had a little too much
-
Haha I got back in at 12 on Friday from the dinner then ended up going back out to meet up with the lads from our Saturday side until 3am!!
-
I have a 20 grainer with about 5 heartwood and no blemishes which I will put up soon :)
Is this the Talisman that you bought? Also did you sort that weight/balance issue you had on the bat a while ago?
-
Yeah it is mate, I havn't sorted out the weight yet, will be sending it to Newbery to have 1.5 ounces shaved off and then it will be perfect :)
-
(http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs041.snc4/34435_161627437181800_121460267865184_533641_4206334_n.jpg)
Saw these narrow grained bats on onlinestockist facebook profile.
-
Nice grains, good advert for your supplier, ask Leo for sponsor rates.
-
haha Talisman
-
It wasnt an advert for any suppliers. I've actually bought one of those bats coz they looked good quality and cheap aswell.
-
Of course...
-
Now that you mention it Mike, his SS stuff for sale have all been sourced from onlinestockist...
-
Musama 91, ring a bell anyone?
-
isn't that umz/
-
Why show double standard guys? Kaboom posted pictures from Onlinestockist so he is advertising whereas a poster couple of days ago posted about SG bat in the following thread nothing happened to him;
http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=7948.0
-
whats the most grains anyone has ever seen on a bat?
-
29, on the £400 Talisman.
-
i'd love to see that many grains - is there a picture somewhere?
Found it. In the safe hands of the Hosk now....
http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=4411.msg57805#msg57805
-
wow, am impressed with that!
too good to use at that price - hang it on the wall and admire
-
i have seen one in Spyder for MS Dhoni it had between 25 - 30 on it, but could really count them there was that many.
-
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1061/5117110959_8eb221883a_b.jpg)
8 Grains.
-
Nothing special might be nicer if they were straight
-
Nothing special might be nicer if they were straight
Ouch
-
i agree they arent "the best" but they are decent. the ones i prefer are on the yellow one i have, 14 grains bit of heartwood. very nice

Julesoak's Vantage Volt is a contender!
-
(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc106/bobsmith007/SNC00305.jpg)
-
now thats a contender
-
that can't be a genuine kook! they never have them that nice
-
I think he said it was a tim Newley custom which he got the weight reduced of by kook- they put new stickers on for him as far as I'm aware..! :)

Scared of putting it up as they are a bit wavey! :)
-
(http://www.cricinfo.com/db/PICTURES/CMS/124100/124113.jpg)
Ouch, that looks sweet
-
stickers need a anti scuff cover on them by the looks of it lol nice looking bat though
-
Jesus how many grains are on that bat??? :o
-
Bout 25 I think..
-
Now that's a beaut. Might only last him a year but god I bet it pings!!
-
Pw- I suppose that's why it's 400 pounds no- maybe specially for the ashes :)
-
That legend looks quality, looking forward to seeing one in the shops
-
Gray nics must have some bloody nice trees! stunning peice of willow
-
Gray nics must have some bloody nice trees! stunning peice of willow
And bloody nice profit margins too..! First impressions of the pic, I thought it was a plank lol- couldn't see the grains ;)
-
it says the legend is made only using the finest English willow. Only hand selected clefts that represent the premium 1% of willow available will be used in the hand crafting of every Legend bat.
Sounds pretty top notch to me
-
Pretty top notch indeed! Wonder if there are better clefts around this forum though? Mike maybe?
-
And bloody nice profit margins too..! First impressions of the pic, I thought it was a plank lol- couldn't see the grains ;)
Hes just scored 120 with it so it's hardly going to be a plank is it !!!! And don't think gn would issue him with anything but the cream of their crop to represent their brand. When kooks are priced at £375 everything seems to be on the up!
-

Does sound top notch, but the mess they have made over mike's (among others) custom pro perf. bats from lords means they do a little bit of lying ;)
-
You would need to be buying large volumes if clefts to find the 1% of premium stuff as explained last week at GM. Some clefts are found by luck when buying in bulk

talking of prices being on the up........
http://www.owzat-cricket.co.uk/acatalog/2011_Kookaburra_Kahuna_Players_batting_gloves.html
£100 RRp batting gloves...... OUCH
and as for the legend looking like a plank, i doubt Srauss has used a plank since he was a kid, if ever.......
-
to find a tight grained cleft without any heartwood is very rare ,normally the older the tree it tend to have a lot of heartwood ,the tree must be 35 yrs + old
-
Alot of money for some gloves that don't feature anything special, even if strauss had used a plank I'm sure he would still have scored runs...bit like the F1 lads on top gear in the reasonably priced car will extract the best possible result from what they have to work with :)
-
to find a tight grained cleft without any heartwood is very rare ,normally the older the tree it tend to have a lot of heartwood ,the tree must be 35 yrs + old
would it also not last as long? i had a 18 grainer M&H that snapped clean in half :(
-
Gn are one of the oldest bat brands so must have some old trees dotted about I'd imagine....prob some they have forgotten about too
old and tight....the victor meldrew of the cricket world!
-
I wasn't saying his bat was rubbish. I'm on iPod touch so I couldn't see the grains so first impressions were: this is a plank!
-
Even without seeing the bat why would a pro be using a plank ???
-
I dunno...hmm got no idea why I said that lol. Not one of my better moments!
-
Unless they take on what we all suggested to GM and issue Watson with a bat which has no middle or performance to it....purely by accident obviously ;)
-
Thought these might be worthy (hope this works - if not on GCCC facebook page - photo 7 and 12)

That bat looks familiar, Is it the one you got off Mike at the pub? Seemed a nice stick then, Welcome to the pink sticker club by the way, I like your taste
-
yep its the one i was holding dearly in the pub, yeah i liked the stickers on your one so thought i'd copy you lol, hope you dont mind ;)

Ha not at all mate, I have the black stickers on my redback also, So best of both worlds now, I think they are very good stickers, Look really simple but a great concept behind the design
-
Has any seen the price for a GN custom
At the GCCC?? $799.00aus that's about £500 I think :o Insane money!!!
-
Best grains thread, hope to match a GN custom here this week and pray it will be good enough to post.
-
sounds interesting.......... will this be the next £400 bat?
-
Ahhh third time lucky mike!!
-
Indeed, I really hope they get it right this time.
-
God help them if they dont !
-
I'll give up if they don't get this one right.
-
maybe they'l exchange it for a legend if its not up to standard this time?
-
No, I wanted Legend labels on it as I think they are by far the best but they will not fit them, since the bat was sold to me as a players bat I thought that this might qualify the Legend but I think it is purely a money spinning model and will be strictly sold at the top end price to maintain profits.
Having said that the bat I am waiting for is mean't to be custom made to my specifications and made from performance based clefts, basically asked for the best performing cleft, this should be big and possibly have tight clean straight grains as shown to us at Gunn & Moore last week.
-
Are you hopeful this time??
-
money grabbing b*******
well fingers crossed its a good'un
-
Not really, having seen and indeed used some lovely ones in the past I feel a bit deflated after the last 2 bats. I think that GN Australia are miles ahead from the offerings I've seen.
-
Mike did you get direct from GN or a contact of yours? Agree with you about the legend labels, but they are tight bastards for not giving you them!
-
Direct from their stand at Lords this summer, I can understand them not wanting to label it up as a Legend if it is not that good, otherwise if it were it would get a great bit of free advertising on here.
-
The good GN's I've used have always been grade 3 or 2's and they've been great. The top models never really impressed me, I never felt like I was getting a lot more for my money. Will you send it back if it's another underwhelming offer?
-
I actually agree totally with the lower grades being better, I've had tight grained 5 stars and Extreme's before which were superb.
-
Page 18 mate.

i was thinking the same thing. My preadator 5 start was one of my best bats. took some time to come to life - but it was brilliant. 5 grains!
-
same experience here , my dads got a 5* powerbow , and so has one of our 1st team bats, they both look and plays better than pro performance models that iv seen , dosent really make much sense to me , some of the ones you see in sports direct look like theyv been labelled up wrong

the legend in particular

I don't think that was the bat Trott was using in the innings

It is not. The one he used in the match had scuff sheet running across the face. That bat was also cracked.

strauss' legend looks amazing, great grains, cook's bat's not bad either
-
Like KP's bat atm, not too many grains but all straight and evenly spaced
-
KP's is a beaut! Cook's and Strauss' bats are also sweet.
-
Not the best around but the best grains I have had on my bat;

Not much is better than this sorry i know they do not sponsor the forum but it is a bloody good bat
oh forgot he wants it back :o
-
As I said to you before bud that would class as a l&w signature cleft as grains are perfect
-
141 is nice :D (http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6517/img3492large.jpg)
-
If i was to ever buy a bat off you, i would demand a re-issue of 007! Nice looking bats there, i assume they come with pro-ping as standard, with the offset edge technology and Oscar's meticulous stamp of approval :D

Of course Dom - I shall get oscar in the next pic for you :D

He's my favourite forum pet :D
-
I appreciate these are not totally straight - but I just found this old bat in my kit bag and had forgotten just how nice the face and grains were.
It's a from an asian batmaker too!!
-
love that mate looks a good un
-
Not the clearest, or best, but 16 predominantly straight grains is good. Right? ;)
-
Looks good, although, please take that gm grip off and put it round straight so the GM logo is dead centre in the face of the bat! I'm a little OCD like that!
-
I am too!! I had an arguement with the grip cone and lost track of where the 'GM' was on the grip. Had that problem with my Puma grip. Nightmare!!
-
(http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2937/abbatface.jpg) (http://img98.imageshack.us/i/abbatface.jpg/)
Not bad but not as good as the batmakers bat

Not sure if I have posted this in the topic yet... but surely up there with the Laver and Wood signature that was posted...

-
Beats it hands down in my opinion Dave looks a beaut that Leo
-
Yeah I love that bat! Can imagine it with the Signature stickers on aswell...

-
May have a few entries once I get a few pics of our new batch
-
looking forward to seeing them Tom. Is your scat is this thread too. got any pics anywhere?
-
Surley petes m&h is worth a shout
-
No the scats wouldn't set the world on fire with the looks as miloicjamo says 7-8 grains gives optimum performance.
There are pics on the forum of them tho...yeh that M&H had a few grains to it as well.
Depends if ur looking for lots of grains of sum perfectly straight ones with 7-10 I guess
-
i'm have a new part made coming from Mike next week with 10-11 grain's which could hopefully be up there :D
-
you have to ask the question, which is rare to see, 20 odd grainers very straight, or 10/12 grainers.
for me i think that laver someone posted is the winner. . . .or maybe mine. . lol
-
best grains are in the eye of beholders...
and rarity, on here, a 9-10 grain isnt much more common than a 20 grain bat haha!!
-
I think you're right. Some people love 10 grains, others love the more grains the better. Some like the blade 1 shade, whereas others love some heartwood! If we were all the same then some bats would never sell!!
So keep the pics coming chaps........great to see! ;)
-
I have a DF bat that i will be posting up next week......will be turning a few heads for sure!
-
dont tell Yash. . . he was disappointed with DF
-
Or dave he night try to buy it
-
Blueroom new wave custom made a few weeks back. 13 straight grains with a touch of heartwood.

-
obviously not the winner, but not bad imo, maybe could have done with a little better spacing, and was pre oil so grains arent as outstanding! found its way to a new home this evening anyway so all is good!

What bat was that Sam? The Cor? ???
-
my H4L from matt, during the 2009 pommy season
(http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/generalcustard/IMGP0412.jpg)
and just a little snippet of a bat that went under my knife last summer
(http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb152/generalcustard/IMGP0676.jpg)
-
no mate it was a black cat that was bradbury silvered up johan...
-
Ohh, you have/had wayy more bats than I thought haha :)
-
yeah i have a few, it was for the good of my cricket club, i took 9 down to our preseason quiz thingy and sold 5 :) all at no or minimal (£5) profit so have the last 4 to sell, of which 1 has gone!
then i have mine :)
-
This is the best bat i own. Weighs 2lbs 5ounces all in (grip, armourtec etc) has a middle like my 3lb bat. I wish i could clone this bat. Not a fan of big edges which seems to be the fashionable thing these days. Much rather have a high spine with plenty of wood in the middle and a light bat. More of a timer than an out an out hitter :)
and yes, i am a die hard Aussie fan through the ups and downs. I think Mitchell johnson rocks! and the sweat shirt use to belong to Tim Paine :) hell i even drove from nottingham to cardiff to see Australia play england! ...like i said, die hard Aussie fan
(http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8302/p1080039.jpg) (http://img220.imageshack.us/i/p1080039.jpg/)
My Ice sub zero 7 of the most evenly spaced straight grains i have seen :)
(http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/7137/p1080032.jpg) (http://img508.imageshack.us/i/p1080032.jpg/)
Genesis Hurricane (graphite) 7 grains not as straight as the sub zero weighs around 2lbs 6 ounces
(http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/5310/p1080035k.jpg) (http://img687.imageshack.us/i/p1080035k.jpg/)
The Beast 6 grains wide spacing. Weighs 2lbs 10ouncs very nice bit of wood
(http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/9343/p1080037z.jpg) (http://img109.imageshack.us/i/p1080037z.jpg/)

That's some collection, not a massive fan of Kook gear but I'd happily take all those off you.
-
I love kookaburra gear. The link below shows all my gear (recently added some fielders pads from kookaburra) All of my mates prefer GM and i get a fair bit of stick from them lol
I dont know why people dont like kookaburra. Must admit i have broken 2 of them pretty much beyond repair. My pure beast graphite that was repaired free of charge after 3 seasons of play. I dare not use it again ...i dont think it can take another drive or yorker. I have a diablo Dm which suffered the same fate as well :(

(http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/3880/p1080042.jpg) (http://img847.imageshack.us/i/p1080042.jpg/)
-
What's with the dowels/repairs in the face?
I'm a GM man myself ;)
-
Basically i played, possibly, the best drive shot i had ever played but it didnt sound what it was suppose to sound like, looked at the bat and it was a goner. Needed to have another bat sent to kookaburra for a refurb and they said send them this one and repaired it free of charge. However, no gurantees as the damage was very pretty bad and i dare not use it with a hard ball. its good for back yard cricket though :)
-
I have my GM Purist II taped back into 1 piece and use it with a tennis ball in the garden now lol.
-
I have one of the Beast Graphite bats - very arty indeed on the back of the bat.

Love it
-
I love the Graphite bats. I have all 4 of the graphites. Kahuna ICON, The Beast (2 of these), Diablo DM and Hurricane Genesis (2 of these) (page 45 on your kit topic)
Conterary to popular belief, they dont improve the performance of the bat. each bat has a peak period of performance, the graphite backing enchances the duration of this period so the peak period lasts longer. Its no different to applying an anti scuff sheet to prolong the life of a bat. I belive they were banned because they were a major step forward and woul make kookaburra a monopoly :) due to patents etc
-
i think there gimmicky crap.
I admire your love of sg cricket though and all they do.
-
lol thats another way of looking at it but they do work due to the physics envloved when a player hits a bat etc
whats sg cricket? :)
-
http://www.sgcricket.com/
-
are kookaburra linked to sg cricket (may be a dumb question) lol
-
yes mate they are Kookaburra
-
Maybe what Dave is trying to say is SG make Kookaburra's bats
-
Nice bats Ussie, you've decided what works for you and stuck to it. Don't worry about those who only have nasty things to say. :)
-
Yes sorry Leo yes that what i was trying to say mate sg make Kook gear mate and make it very well
Jon please stop the born again Christian stuff or your name might change to Cliff Richards....
We all like different kit it looks ok but sorry if we do not all like the same things
-
Thats ok, im a pretty chilled out relaxed kind of guy. Besides, i didnt even think someone had said anything nasty :)
I have the graphite bats for collection mainly as they are becoming rarer to find. The fact that i have all four makes it all that more special for me :)
-

Exactly. They're not my cup of tea, but they are interesting. May even be worth something due to their rarity :)

Hey - the boys at Kicking Horse take bloody forever to choose anything - it's a nightmare!!
Still, nearly there, just the Donkey-S model to sort out now.
May need to talk to you about a publicity lid for the launch, the boys at nets were all over my helmet like a rash.

i dont know... thats what he was doing in 2007-2008, but now he might have a full-blown company...

Right, I'll call his bluff and try to speak to him - see if he's for real or not.
-
i always thought he was u, cause of the similar names on the forum HAHA :D
-
I saw Kicking Horse the first time round, they were good but the shifty seller put me off, if the brand has been sold and the new guy is more trustworthy than the old one then it will be a top brand I'm sure.
On a side note have you ever thought of suing that TTFC guy on CSF Fattus? he looks like he is trying to copy you.....

Well we can't have that can we!
It should all be cleared up next weekend, I'm visiting the warehouse and sealing the deal.
I don't think that TTFC guy has posted on here ever so he must be long gone!

There was an amazing looking Symonds bat on Quantum cricket that I almost bought, was only £90!

Is a new brand in the works?
or am I behind the times and missed something?

6 very straight and very tight grains. I love how everything in the whole comment is just utterly wrong!

Yep - I counted 20 grains too! And that's bat porn!
If I were a low grade bat, I would be very excited right now! ;)

Has anyone ever proved that a bat with less grains performs differently to a bat with more?
-
how would one go about "proving" that?
-
I haven't got the faintest idea! Just wondering whether our obsession with grains (mine included) actually makes any difference whatsoever to the performance of a bat......
-
the myth is that more grains = less time to play in and find ultimate performance
so less grains = more time needed to play in and find the ultimate performance
must still be a myth as not sure how it can be proved at all, let alone generalised for all willow.
-
And bearing in mind that 'ultimate performance' is subjective as well I guess it must be a myth!
-
I remember when I was talking to Julian he said depending on how much you use a bat but more grains one will last for a season or season and a half while fewer grains one can take you for three season.
Again depends how much you use, how you use etc
-
And bearing in mind that 'ultimate performance' is subjective as well I guess it must be a myth!
another good point :), not only is it a subjective thing but at which point could you subjectively tell your bat will get no better?
I think its safe to say its a myth and people will have their varying thoughts on the subject
-
Pedals youve tried the scat. What did u think?
-
We've proven that bats with varying numbers of grains perform pretty similarly (unscientifically of course). Look here:
http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=14247.msg227295#msg227295
All the ping scores of 10 are from bats with differing numbers of grains.

Apologies for bringing up an old topic, but I thought with people getting new bats for 2012 that it might have be interesting to see new entries; plus I was just going through my Photobucket account and found some pictures.

Hope this works ok many thanks matt - not the most grains, or the least grains, but maybe not a bad looking lightweight.
-
cricket box bat?
-
That's right - if the image is zoomable you can see the sticker top right.
-
they've improved the stickers a lot i had one as a net bat and had to take them off because they were shocking. looks decent and isn't a bad shop at all.
-
They are local to me so it was easy to pop in and spend a bit of time checking out the bats - I think I spotted one which might have had the stickers you mention but most were dressed like mine.
Good shop, I've been very impressed with how much time and trouble they take to make sure that youngsters get bats that are the right size and weight.
-
Those stickers just shout Intinct at me!

See that i like a lot... I do get the loads of grains thing but i personally prefer that cm spacing and all fairly equal.
The key is when you cut and shape the toe and the grains fall straight down with no wave... beautiful and you know it'll go like a train. Also the natural depth of colour in between the grains.

Ooh I like those! I always prefer the heartwood (if there is any) to be always be equal to the sapwood, not just a thin little strip.

Ah right, cheers for the tip! Will do that next time, I'm not really much of a photographer, nor do I know what angles work best etc. :-[

Mmmm.
What bat is this?
-
Hawk - it's a net bat believe it or not :o It had a pressing crack in the shoulder so was graded as a workshop reject and is a copy of my other which isn't as pretty to look at but taps up just as well.

Just out of interest was it even one of your bats mate??
I was tempted to post pictures on another thread of my kit, but due to recent attitudes I'll probably be accused of promoting/having associations with neon cricket (which for the record I don't)
-
the bats posted were unstickered blanks bats ............ how can that be promotion?
because you posted the pictures to promote the question of what bats are they, ergo you get the promotion and some potential sales.
Tight yes, ott, almost certainly, but also fair.
If it was your personal bat then it wouldn't be the same - but these are clearly not.

That Ihsan with 24 grains is a stunner and pings crazy. I have a reliable supplier in Pakistan . He keeps sending me good stuff like this.

All these bats with 20+ grains look like Grade 2 to me. I think they look slightly wrong. 10-20 dead straight is much nicer!

I agree.
Separately they will also be from quite near the top of old trees (you can assume this as the grains on a bat get narrower the higher up the trunk of the tree you go and the number of grains give an indication of age) as a result the chances of them breaking from storm damage are really high.
Still they will be go-ers... :o
-
for me 9 to 12 looks best.

I like more grains, not due to looks, but mainly due to all my many grains bats go instantly and don't need to open up,
The issue with that is, they are soft and don't last long, that b3 did 900 runs last year, yet had two refurbs!
My mates b3 with 12grains, did 900 runs, and looks like the day it came out the factory..........

There's no doubting that, has very little bearing on a soft bat though. But it's a forum I should have closed that loophole. Newb mistake.
-
can someone explain this opening up phenomenon to me, does it literally split down the grains?
Is a bat not just knocked in when it stops denting and and no seam marks are presnt??

Personally, I have absolutely no idea what is it.
I know when you have scored about 1500 runs with a bat the grains may well have split a bit and the wood cracks - but opening up? I have no idea
now a bat with a loved face like
(http://i109.piczo.com/view/2/g/5/l/n/8/m/2/u/e/h/l/img/i241200017_93900_7.jpg)

You won't see many bat like that on here.
My one and only bat, which I used last year would have people on here laughing at the state of it!,

I have a bat similar to what buzz posted. It was an itias which has been through many facelifts over the years, scoring me close to 1200 runs in all formats. But its still going strong as a back up willow. From my recollection itias bats were as bats and from my memory and very soft pressed. So in my eyes. Hard/soft pressing in relation to bat longevity is rubbish. All about how you play and care of the bat

It's a top stick mate that's for sure reminders me off the old slazenger bats that my dad had all use to go very well

IMO, the closest to perfection is that Argon, with 7 very evenly spaced and straight grains. If only it didn't have the blemishes... :-[

^ That Reserve is a beauty! How long do these tight-grained bats perform well? By that I mean what is the period for which these bats perform ?
-
Chad - how is that screaming cat, is it as good as they say?

That reserve. :o

I have no clue. Not even going to try give an answer, as all bats are very different, and grain structure can only suggest things, but it isn't always the case! I know Gray Nicolls say that tighter grained bats are lighter, yet Andy Norbs, the guy who used to run SAF bats, said that more grains suggest that the cleft is more dense/heavy. All I know is that if you treat and use your bats well, knock them in well and they haven't been overdried/storm damaged, chances are that they will last a while!
Chad - how is that screaming cat, is it as good as they say?
I've not actually properly used it! Extremely well balanced, crafted and responds well when tapping it up. The handle is amazingly shaped too! I wouldn't pay £400+ for one though, not that they're overrated or anything like that, but I have never and don't plan to spend more than £320 on a bat!
That reserve. :o
Indeed, of all the bats, it has the best oiled look. :) Found out that the scuff sheets Laver use weigh about 0.8 of an ounce... Pretty much double your standard scuff!
-
Love the look of that Helios Midas.

Though there's still probably more chance of this being for sale than finding him!
-
To be fair, you probably stand more chance of finding the bat than the seller! ;)
I did see an equally gorgeously grained Mjolnir at Uzi Sports a while ago! That classic traditional profile with long middle, mixed with amazing grains does look totally lush!

Hello Avkrish - is it possible to see more pics of the Super Tusker (particularly the profile?) Many thanks.
Here they are, not sure about the picture quality. The bat is not the old Super Tusker, got this from Quantum Cricket; I think one of the last 2 they had then. Still, it was a dream come true for me :)

Correction on the weight
its 2-9.9
38 mm edges , 62 mm spine and full profile..no concaving
picks up really nice
one thing i like about RS bats other than profile is their pressing
Feels like made in UK and by that i mean its not super soft pressed like many SS/SG bats these days.

Just picked us a little gem for under £20 on a selling site. I think that it might compete with a few of these gems when i give a good clean!

Thanks they are beauties but unfortunately I can't use all of them.
This guy shax only does players willows & reserve edition stuff. Pocket full of sunshine eh ??!! :)
Reason being then I can't blame the bat for batting crap as I have the best available willow same as pros. I tend to blame a bat for my shortcomings and get rid of it and get another one. But learnt my lesson it's not the bat but batsmen. No more stupid spending on pro bats which I have spent silly amount of money as no manufacturer want to sell pro bats to public.

The Mana has gone pretty well, I think we have some nice 808s left but that's it. They are good bats but probably not worthy of this topic

@shax12 where did you buy this beauty from? hav you used it?
No I ain't bought it. But very tempted. My relative sent me these pictures from Pakistan and I sourced the second one in the picture for a mate and it's exceptional. I don't really like the profile on CA bats so that's putting me of. Unless I get a custom made with similar or better grains.

@jamielsn15 it depends from person to person. It was my choice with the best looking bats that they had & performers as well....But yes looking at the many other bats on this thread mine are not the best lookers ;)

Best Grain SHEET qualify? :D
To be honest, I think CX have got something quite exceptional to offer, I have no issues with grain sheets, and these seem to be the most natural looking ones I've seen. It's a real shame they seem to go about it in a dishonest way and try to justify the prices.

A few of the bats sold in the last 48 hours or so to very lucky customers.
Legends not too shabby is it @GoldenArm ;)
-
@Vitas Cricket ha! Okay I'll have to eat my words temporarily as that at least looks the part but I stand by what I said. I still think the prices have gone completely crazy for what you actually get. Can we honestly say that all the legends look like that? I'll always feel that for the best part of a grand you should get the rockstar treatment and not just have a bat off the shelf. I'd have that travis head personally over that and it's nearly a hundred quid cheaper isn't it?
-

I agree top end bats are rather expensive nowadays. The number of top end clefts isn't going up year on year but there has been an explosion of bedroom brands who market themselves as selling 'pro grade' or 'players grade' etc bats. The simple supply and demand equation does have an impact here, and some of the demands made to batmakers who supply on a white label basis are ridiculous. In the specific case of the legend it is one of the only bats that I have found to be genuinely limited edition. Forget 'a run of only 100' or 'extremely limited edition' etc, we sold 4 Legends in 2016 and I had a customer wanting what would have been our 5th. A simple 'I'm afraid they are all gone for this season' was the response. Apart from a model being discontinued or trying to order something when a warehouse is empty 2 weeks before a brand takes delivery of the new seasons order, I've never been told a bat is completely off the table.
I personally feel the mid/lower price points have barely changed in the 5 and half years we've been in the business, top end has gone up significantly though.
We sell Legends for £575 and yes the GM Player Editions are cheaper than that, lovey bats. My post was very tongue in cheek but I did see what you said in another topic, if you want that experience where you can visit Robertsbridge and sit down with the batmaker and have something truly bespoke then you can, you really won't get much change from £1000 though, we sell it for (I think) £950
-
@Vitas Cricket ah they still offer that then? I didn't even realise that still existed, never hear of anyone actually doing it. I'd love to see what they walked out with; can someone with loads of money please go and do it!!! Yeah fair enough in everything you said, you'd know a lot more about it than me seeing these bats on a daily basis and dealing with GN directly. I'd just seen some really underwhelming legends last couple of years and it made me think blimey has the quality really dropped this far? They were quite weedy and not the best lookers.just not what I would expect from something that's supposed to be the cream of the crop. Pleased to see that at least the sponsors on here can get hold of the good stuff still!
-
@GoldenArm yes it is still available, I think we did our last one about 18 months ago. The customer got a lovely bat and really enjoyed their day out. It was obviously better value when the day also included at least a couple of hours with the England captain, that option is sadly no longer on the table.
I've seen some questionably graded bats from all brands, whilst we don't hang out hat on handpicking as we feel our relationship is good enough with the brands we deal with to be able to trust them to choose a bats to suit what we ask for, it is obviously beneficial when we visit a brand to be able to filter out the 'lesser' bats. All opinion of course.
-
I think this is a pretty good candidate, perfectly straight top to bottom. I think it will look even better once I oil it :)

definitely wont be the best...but more than enough to keep me satisfied...

You've just got to love this forum sometimes... I post a picture of a bat with nice grains on, in the correct thread (without any self promotion anywhere) and it gets taken down. I've tried to contact the admins on more than one occasion about becoming a forum sponsor and get no response. :D

If it's this one, I can see it ??? The second point you make is a bit frustrating, especially since you've contributed in the past under a different brand. If it's space for sponsors issue - I just don't see Shark or T Rapta cricket really engaging with us... Anyways, not the correct thread to discuss this, so feel free to censor/edit this post as you please admins.

While this isn't ugly by any means (I actually love it!) if there were some big stickers hiding the character towards the top of the bat this would likely be classed as perfect!

Probably my spare bat - I'm actually using a GM 808 this year as main bat. Let this open up...
-
Think this a higher grade, think so many grains will help open it up sooner than you think 🙂
-
It is an actual genuine pro bat for a Zimbabwe International... wish it was more glamorous but hey...
But I like the GM bat too its very nice... each will get its turn when the time is right :)

It's an AM bat, but the player isn't sponsored by AM but probably like most pros picks bats up from various manufacturers.
The AM branding/stickers are a bit like marmite... I don't mind it but some people aren't keen so took them off. Decided to keep it in the end and hence why I bought stickers from Tom.
-
It definitely looks a very good stick, which gm 808 is the one?

It's a Noir, quite like the shape but wish the GM would have thicker toes, but is lovely...

One of the oppo was in India recently and on his way back to the airport he stopped off at the TON factory and said something like "I haven't got much time. What is your most expensive bat"?
He came away with this...

@velvetsky01 I’ll do a more detailed review in the coming days. I popped over to @JTtaylor145 for a new GM and was planning on visiting Garrad & Flack over the winter but when I say this and the price Mr Taylor let me have this for it was a no brainier.

By the time you've acquired a few more over the winter, I bet it doesn't end up your 2020 match bat! ;)

@WalkingWicket37 I know I have previous but I have 4 bats now, I have 1 on my wish list and can assure that there will be no more other than that and that this will start the new season as my main match bat. This 2 GM’s going into 2nd and 3rd seasons respectively and my Keeley which is brand new.

want to keep it a virgin and admire its beauty forever and ever but unfortunately will have to break its virginity this year :) :). If you go by a grain per year, it would have taken 23 years to be in its current form :D.

not bad, once upon a time i bought bats from a local seller, one of them had around 20 and one butterfly bat from Steve, MSR, 2.11lb , gave away to a nice guy who kept asking for a nice bat :D

Indeed.
Nope, as you're probably aware I don't make bats or source my own clefts which I'm always very upfront about - whilst Neon is really starting to take off, it is still run alongside my 'career' so making bats just isn't an option for me (and I certainly don't have the awesome skill required!).
I'm just in the fortunate position of having a very strong relationship with my supplier which has been built up over many years, thus enabling me to regularly get hold of some very good bits of willow!

No, I meant, for example, a 'manufacturer' like Newbery might have a supply of willow delivered to the real manufacturer? A real manufacturer known to you, perhaps.
I was only saying because your willow looked so good. Mind you, I believe you have to buy a fair amount to get much grade 1?

it is quite a light bat (2.7) considering the specs it comes with. 38mm edges, 25mm toe and minimal concaving.

ya mate, surprises me with the weight the specs it has. Must be a extremely low density cleft. I usually open the batting and also bat in the middle order occasionally depending on the wish of the captain.

Please give it extra time to playing in, and enjoy a lot of runs

thank you mate.
-
A purist might say the grains should run straight through the toe?
agreed mate. that's what i hear from batmakers and purists as you that grains running straight and parallel all the way through the toe is a sign of better performance . However, how much truth is in that theory i don't know. have used bats that have horrible grain structure across the blade and the toe with exceptional performance.
-
Ah right I get you, no it's purely down to what I'm sent by my supplier
I'm not necessarily saying there's a correlation, but Hunts County didn't have many bats as good looking as those on their own shop shelves when I visited.
-
A purist might say the grains should run straight through the toe?
I've read that moving grains means more ping
How is it possible 23 grains to make straight into the toe?
Straight grains is a myth.

You can guess there is but in actual fact there isn’t. It’s used to promote better looking or low density bigger bats for bigger profit margins. Check wrights or any willow merchant and there is no G1+ grade but find a bat maker or sticker brand and they advertise G1+ as there top grade as any company can grade within the brand there own way.
-
Think this makes more sense, thanks
-
Are bats with heartwood considered grade 1 or 1+? Are there any advantages or disadvantages?
-
I was always told you wanted the harder heartwood on outside edge so the edge doesn't split if you edge off. I had a really good visit to Warsop on Friday in Essex and he told me that pros do this because they *don't* expect to edge it much, and heart wood is more brittle.
Any clarifications please?
BTW I would really recommend visiting Warsop. They are really old school bat makers, grow some of their own willow, and showed me some beautiful clefts. They also said they will make a custom in any shape required, I presume for the same price as their normal range. Some great looking bats on the shelves as well. I think it's a shame we don't see so much of them on the pro circuit, or can CBF members identify some players that use them? I didn't see any on the Essex line up when I watched them last year at Fenner's. Mostly GNs.
I did see one monster bat which was both long blade and long handle. Should be ideal for me size wise, but I didn't like the feel of it at all...
-
I always thought it was because the Heartwood was slightly harder and would take some of the pace (minimal) off the ball should you nick it..
Old wives tales ey….
-

Guessing, it's the opposite, heartwood make edged go quicker

Their new stickers really are marmite :( but as always some good willow.

The one on the left is perfection!

Wow. How much do they charge for those?

Yeah, it's a shame they can't be easily changed really...
-
That Pryzm looks lovely. Like the sticker shade as well.

Funnily enough, I never asked him as I'm going over in April.... not really sure what's happening with them. They used to sponsor some of the Pak players early on back in the day, but they normally moved onto the bigger brands CA, Malik, Ihsaan etc..
Their website has been down for years too. I've had dealings with them over the years and personally had good dealings with them, but it is the old western union payments and sometimes the bats are a little heavy than they promise probably the old 2.8 vs 2 lbs 8 oz confusion lol
-
PS I was shown these short while ago. These are in the Uk, so no import tax. I'm guessing they have family members here.
I got quoted £240 or something as a special price to me, not sure what they would normally sell for,

Travel light and take some large empty cases with you...

Never heard of AM. I assume they can only be used before midday?

Not having a pop but not sure 240 quid is a 'special price' based on what you can get for that in the UK.
Lovely looking bat that @mattw 👍
-
Fair enough... each to their own ;)
Go with what makes you happy... topic going slightly left field but in line with this thread, have had some grainy bats made available to me by them. Not always taken the option up but they have offered blades they would supply to players and all I've had have been good blades. PS they dont do sharpies unfortunately.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion so I'm good :)
-
Sorry mate, as I said I wasn't having a pop. My point was more that the value would be buying these (as you will be maybe) on your travels, rather than in the UK.
Getting back to grains....Just prepping this at the minute for someone. Personally I like the grains on it but not what everyone would expect from a bat at this level maybe...

-
I was always told you wanted the harder heartwood on outside edge so the edge doesn't split if you edge off.
I think Paul Walter is the only Essex player currently sponsored by Warsop.
-
Are bats with heartwood considered grade 1 or 1+? Are there any advantages or disadvantages?
Grade 2, technically?

That’s A belter of a looker.

Yes it is. I had exactly this bat earlier in the year (5* lite) and it was nice looking, but nothing like as good as this. Sold on the forum. It only cost £115 though from SD. How much was this one if you don't mind saying?

Clearly its Serbian willow...
***grabs coat***

That's great value. What weight?
Just over 2.8 with single chevron, got to add a scuff so will be about 2.85 - 2.9, pick up is feather light as its a mid/high profile

Friend of a friend is all i can say was handpicked from a selection reserved for someone, There is a tiny knot on the back towards the shoulder about the size of a 5p that is right on the edge by the chequered sticker GN have on all there bats. Not sure if this downgraded it but i do believe this should have been an LE. Not sure if the grade sticker is accurate but anyway its my final bat in my kit bag now. Can’t believe I’m down to just 3 bats. Better update not kit thread lol
-
Absolute steal at £100 mate
Wow

Nearly as good as that Oblivion 5 star you had off me a few years ago ;)
-
Nearly as good as that Oblivion 5 star you had off me a few years ago ;)
Yep that was a stunner. Probably even nicer than this one
-
Absolute steal at £100 mate
Nice grains and absolute steal at that price. Do GN see heartwood as negative? Why is this bat not grade1 or 1+?
-
Upto 1 inch of heartwood is grade 1
More than 1 inch is graded as grade 2
Half blade heartwood is grade 3
This reflects in it's RRP £150, shockwave 5 star lite,
-
Yes, so what does Lite actually mean? Is it lower quality than the regular 5 star, or just a lightweight version? When I bought mine it was advertised as 5 star (and not lite - typical sports direct error), hence why I sold it on.
-
Lower quality, would say it's a 4 start bat, which I'm sure is still very good willow and pressing, but as shockwave is high middle bat, don't know how good it actually is for driving
-
Pretty sure it means lightweight doesn't it?
-
Shockwave 5 star is rrp £279.
Shockwave 5 star Lite is rrp £150.
So I'm thinking it is about quality and not just weight. Really misleading name though.
-

I'd the same with Kronus 700 lite
-
The 5star and 5star lite are both the same grade but the lite tends to come in lighter weights. You can get the shockwave I weight from 2.7 - 2.12 but the lite only between 2.6 - 2.9.
As for grade or RRP they are the same. Not sure what grade exactly as GN are quite vague with the grading as they grow there own willow so don’t tie into the wrights standard grading. I would guess it’s like the GM 808 and be mostly G2 as that’s the most common model purchased in the mid range price point when I spoke to a retailer a while back.
As for quality I would say this is as good as any G1 or if you buy into it G1+ bat out there on initial indication of pick up and performance with an old ball. It’s also lower density as it’s full width, 38mm edge, 61mm spine ( approx as don’t have digital callipers)
-
5 star and 5 star lite are the same grade. The lites we have seem to be bigger in size for the weight, and usually range between 2-7 and 2-9
-
Thanks. In that case, why is the rrp over £100 different?

Here was the face of my Shockwave 5 star Lite :
https://photos.app.goo.gl/2TrWkfsB2Yp4Tg4A8
Very nice bat but it didn't look grade 1 to me: 5 grains, wavy heartwood and a few faint knots on the face
-
It's £25 different?
When I follow the links it shows £299.99 for the 5* and £149.99 for the 5* Lite.
-
The price for the lite listed is for junior bats
-
OK, I think there's a refresh problem on their site. When I put the Lite into a shopping trolley the price jumps to £279, which is only £20 less, as you say. So all is well in the world of GN. I would still expect better grains though on a £279 bat (I mean the one I had, k not the lovely one Chris is showing)
-
I'm going to put this one on here, it's not the cleanest of grains, but it's the most bloody grains I;ve ever had, and it pings like a trampoline full of grasshoppers.

Yes an unfair test. I was impressed by the freshness and the quality of the face after a light sand. It's a B. Warsop from around 1930. Got it from a junk shop in Islington for a few quid,

Before they moved out to Essex, they apparently used to get on the train at London, wait til they saw suitable willows out of the window, get off at the next stop and chop some down. Don't think the farmer would let you do that nowadays 😂😂😂

That is a seriously good looking stick. Wonder how many of the womens players use a standard SH vs shorter options (SM, Academy, Harrow, etc).
-
I know four Pakistani international women use full size short handles

I know four Pakistani international women use full size short handles
I think that I am right in saying that there is only a .7cm difference in blade width between an H and a SH but whenever I pick up one of the junior players bats in the dressing room, the H always seems tiny. I think a few manufacturers are starting to produce better kit for women now there is an increase in popularity

Harrows are roughly 0.75 to 1 inch shorter than SH as a general guide. From experience, the vast majority are made in very light weights which might explain why they seem so small!

I do have a fair few bats, to say the least... 😅😅😅

I quite like the grains on the H4L. Deeeeeelightful.

No! Seriously?

Rob had a GN MAAAAAX 5 star that looked a beauty when I went in last week @Six Sixes Cricket. Should've took pictures.
-
Wow! Thats one of the best looking bats (the H4L) I have ever seen.
-
No! Seriously?
Best way to find that out is to read all of Chad's posts, some day you'll find The answer 😊😀😀

I have moved to a fibre sheet now! Even with my beauts. Much better protection - also quite like the look too (I shall await the abuse ha)

Really nice spell of weather we're having, so couldn't resist taking a wee break and grabbing a few bats for a snap outside. 2 SG Watson Players Editions, a H4L Fifty-fifty and a L&W Signature in a Bradman style profile.

No idea how you select one of these bats of yours, to use in the matches🤔

Personally totally agree mate I much prefer the fibre scuff, much better protection, doesn’t crack and bubble on the edges and also looks in my opinion better.

Terrible to get off though.
If you buy the good quality fibre scuff they come off easily with a heat gun and scrapper, admittedly not as easy as peeling the clear one. The cheap ones are a nightmare however

Not quite as good as the Laver which given JS Wrights picked 4 clefts to be auctioned for charity starting bids of $2000 you would expect to be the pick of the crop.
These aren’t bad if anyone is interested

What about if you're right handed?
Some players prefer heartwood on the inside edge, while the majority don't care!
Ask a non CBF member their preference on heartwood and I'll bet the majority won't care, with a good proportion likely to ask "what's heartwood?"

Not especially good looking, are they?
-
£650 does seem a bit steep, lots of blemishes and not the straightest or most even grains we will ever see. I'm sure they go like rockets but I won't be paying that for one!
-
Not especially good looking, are they?
Not for £650 to be honest. If anyone is going to pay that much then they should be blemish free, even if they are going to be covered up by the stickers.

It was indeed, I managed to get the bat for a much better price that what it was originally listed for.
Considering it is brand new, one of the lighter BS PE bats I have seen plus seeing the price of the 2023 Player Edition bats, I feel I have got a bit of a bargain.

How thin is the toe mate? Lovely looking bat and sounds a bargain against new.

For me it is the mid range bats like that one that are more memorable. I had honestly forgotten most of the legends in the post above.
Yours was a lovely bat, as was an Oblivion (maybe Oblivion e41) 5 star for @SOULMAN1012 and this absolute blunderbus of a Kook Menace that i think sold in person in the shop. All more than reasonable from a cost perspective but really showing the subjective nature of grading, all 3 had the looks and the performance that could have commanded a top end price tag.
This 2'9 Menace 700 is bloody huge and it picks up like a feather.
43mm edges in the 'powerbulge area' and even at the very top of the shoulder the edges are 20mm. At the bottom of the toe they are 25mm.
Here it is compared to a recoil 900 that also weighs 2'9.
I've seen 3lb Ultra Menace bats that are similar size to this.
£195 is our price on a Menace 700, with free delivery, anybody tempted?
I'll knock it in for free :)

Yep that obvlivion was still getting the odd bit of use until 2021 season when it finally gave up the ghost. That mogul 404 was also one of mine but unfortunately it never really opened up.
For a bit of nostalgia I also really miss the forum meets at Vitas was the one weekend I always made sure I was available but my wallet doesn’t mind so much lol.

-
Oh my. What a stunner
-
Thanks chad, nice shape but the toe looks a little thin.
You got any measurements of the bat?
-
Seen this in the flesh and it is s stunner. From memory i don't think the toe was as thin as some. The one on the Stokes I made a copy up for was about 14/15mm on one side. That said, I'd still take that over a 26mm toe on an overdried bat.

-
I agree 100% - what a lovely looking bat.
-
Can't say there's much more you could ask for. Good specs, looks lovely, plenty durability with a reasonably thick toe.
-
Perfection
-
What a beauty, just as well you said it has been sent off as expect you would have had a lot of people looking to take it off your hands.
-
When it comes back it will be knocked, so worth dropping Neon a line then!
-
Not the most grains in the world, but I had to share as it's a cracker. For me personally this is pretty much exactly what I would be looking for in a bat.
Edge: 40mm
Spine: 65.8mm
Toe: 26.6mm
Weight: 2lb 9.9oz dressed
This one has actually just left to head down to the Cricketer's office for their annual gear guide test, intrigued to see the outcome in a few weeks' time!

That is a stunner Adam,,,love the sticker colours

What a beauty, just as well you said it has been sent off as expect you would have had a lot of people looking to take it off your hands.
Aha @velvetsky01 has tried multiple times over the past month already!
-
When it comes back it will be knocked, so worth dropping Neon a line then!
Unfortunately it'll likely go into the 'Gear Guide' collection - I've been keeping all the tested bats since Belly's with the intent to make up a display for in the HQ. This will be the third since he got involved so that'll be enough to get the display started :D

Boooooo :D
It really is a beaut!

I always try to add something constructive (hence not posting that much!), but I've got to make an exception here... Oof, that's a good-looking bat!

This one may or may not be in the hands of a long time CBF member....

Lovely both of those.

Incredible grains for Signatures.

These grains are pretty exceptional for a Butterfly grade

Outrageous for a butterfly cleft. If you win the cleft lottery and get another butterfly like that again... 😅

It finished at 2lb 9.4oz was a superb cleft

Had to do a quick update on this post just to show how much willow can fluctuate in weight... quite a significant difference to some.
Pre-sending to the Cricketer:
(https://i.postimg.cc/0Q3TF5JQ/20230118-105234.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Upon return:
(https://i.postimg.cc/7hHdBMm2/20230223-121506.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Nothing different about the bat, other than that the Cricketer's offices must be a lot warmer than here!
I'll do an update in a few weeks and see if anything's changed, has me intrigued to say the least.

This is why bats should be kept at room temperature, but it's not always possible.

"Room temperature" covers quite a variable level of temperature and humidity mind.

See, for me, not only is that a great shape - but I'd be happy with those grains, rather than 18 straight ones for £600

My favourite profile!!!! Is this custom made @urban.monk?
yeah got it custom made from https://dkpcricketonline.com/en-eu . However I'd not recommend him. I ordered 2 bats with prof. grade willow and he completely butchered the 1st one. Finish was awful. Specs all over the place. And the worst, not only he butchered the 1st one, the willow was no where close to prof. grade. Maybe a 2 or 3. Check some other bat Makers here on forum. I'll leave the drawing I made for the sizes here. All sizes in mm. You can alter the toe thickness if you prefer, but just know that with 0 concaving, unless you are used to 2,12 bats, it'll not be easy swinging it for 1st few days. But when it hits, ball goes like a bullet.

In terms of buying a bat to use this is about perfect for me. Think the wildly grainy ones like above often look more appealing, but the best bats I've had have always had the 8-12 grains on them.
-
Yes this looks perfection to me too. I’ve got close eyes on this bat. I hope we see review, refurb, ping videos, net practice, the lot!
I think Id sleep with this bat as if it was the champions league trophy 😍

I didnt even know willow like this existed 😮
I lost count at 30 grains!
Any chance of following this one develop?
