looks good 3rd picture that profile looks great.
-
Yeah it's a weird one that
Just kinda evolved
The cleft was big enough just to work on pick up.
It's also got every cheat in the book on it
The edges taper back, the bat width tapers up, shoulders dropped slightly etc
But it is a long blade, and 2.14.5 finished
-
I'll post up the round bottom plane modifications and the forging of a drawknife soon
Also got the press to show

I’ll drop this off Friday to it’s lucky owner

Using the chuck from an old lathe to string a handle
Now that I need!
-
Loads on eBay
I’m lucky in that I work all over the U.K., so I can pick things like this up easily.
This was off an old submarine! Got it off a bloke down in Havant, I’d know idea that it was collectible until the bids went a bit stupid.
I only wanted the lathe bed and screw for my bat press, but I’ve ended up using quite a few parts off it
-
(https://s26.postimg.org/6gce8ebv9/A04_EDD9_A-0511-4_CF0-_BFEC-2_A8479422_E53.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/6gce8ebv9/)
This was modified from a smoothing plane , again bought off eBay, very cheap
Tbh I didn’t have a clue what I was doing with this, but it seems to concave the bats perfect and for under a fiver, it’s a damn sight cheaper than buying a travisher or similar
Gotta be honest too, I just can’t get the hang of either spokeshaves or hand planes.
I can do the work of both with my random orbital sanders and an electric plane
I know it’s not the fashionable norm, but it works for me

Gives a good idea of different stages of batmaking
Bat on the left just needs final finishing etc, but the bat on the right still has a lot of shaping,(spine into the toe) and finishing

Love the flat cap, no whippet an oversight?
Bats do look beautiful though, fair play. Going to have to give this a go some day soon.

handle has been strung,(had to bath kids then bugger off to indoor nets), so I’ll finish polishing and stickering it up tomorrow .
Finished weight will be just under 2.11
40mm offset edges and around a 55mm peak spine
Tbh, it’s a full spine into the toe, bit of a tk,Salix hybrid
Bat face has some character and pings very very nice
Even at that weight I’d be happy to have it in my kit bag, could do some serious damage with that
-
Great effort! Liking the stickers!

Lovely effort mate great to see another member venture into the bat making world, also really like the look of the stickers you have designed, from someone that’s been tipping there toe in the water a kitchen over the past few years the one stumbling block if always found is someone or somewhere to get some decent quality stickers at a reasonable price so can I ask who designed and prints yours mate?
By the way love the profile of that last one you have made

Youve got the hang of that travisher no worries at all there Mark!
Keep up the great work!
-
My favourite tool by far that travisher
Just picked up another random orbital sander from screwfix,,24.99 absolute bargain
If they did a 150mm one I’d put the festool on eBay
-
Glad you're enjoying the travisher mate, the bats look fantastic well done

-
Just go on screwfix website
It's the cheapest they do
Gets really good reviews, and rightly so
It's usually in stock too, which is good
Not sure how they sell it for that,
It's the energer one at 24.99

Really like that profile!
With the spine into the toe makes it look like a proper club!
-
My mate Ram has broken so many toes on bats, hopefully this will last a bit
That newbery cost him a small fortune, and is only used in matches

What lovely looking bats well done mate.
Hope the travisher is behaving ;)
-
Yeah that's one batmaking tool, I'd be lost without mate
-
I think I'm seeing the start of a signature shape ! :D
Top work .
-
Yes I’d agree,,,, after over 40yrs of playing, I suppose I’ve seen every possible shape of bat.
The shape/profile I’m shaping , just seems to work
It’s not easy to produce, as the spine has to run fairly straight to the toe.
Then the profile has to follow that line, which means getting the balance and pick up right, whilst keeping as much wood in the bat as possible.
One big thing I do want, is to get the finish of the bats, as good as possible
It takes time, but , that’s what ultimately will set me apart
-
(https://s7.postimg.cc/r9xi8a04b/IMG_4277.jpg)
Great work mate!
Absolutely love this profile. Top Job!
-
I'll post up the round bottom plane modifications and the forging of a drawknife soon
Also got the press to show
any update on these? would love to see what youve done
-
yeah i really like the profile!
are these for sale at all ? if so have you any pricing lists? out of interest
-
any update on these? would love to see what youve done
I've not had chance to forge the drawknife,, I was eventually lucky enough to get one off eBay that's perfect , after buying loads
I will get round to it soon tho and post pics

nice finish on the bats. I always struggled to get a nice finish.

That looks absolutely stunning - love how clean the edges and shaping looks.
Some talent on show here :)
-

what about the press and modifications to the travisher
-
Tuffers,,,,I’ve not touched or needed a round bottom plane since getting a travisher,,, I could almost do a raw cleft to a bat using the travisher alone, it would take a bit longer, and kill the edge on the travisher, but it is almost a one batmaking tool.
The press is done ,,, but I might strip it down and start again
It’s way over engineered for what I need, and takes up all the room in one of my sheds, and hopefully we are moving house soon, so it needs stripping down anyway.
-

Are these bats bowed?

excellent. you certainly have some skill when it comes to creating bats. really happy with the one you made me. so much so that i havnt used it yet!! just a stunning piece of willow.
be interested in seeing the press and how you engineered it
-
@Northern monkey - beautiful shape Marky. I can only endorse The Monkeys work, the size 4 he did for me is superb (I’ll get you pics Mark, he’s smashing it everywhere!).
Any damaged clefts you can make a shoulderless from?

Spent half of yesterday trying to sharpen the thing.

Top work mate. Great looking bats.
-
As much as I admire the work , bat shapes etc of the forum sponsors and 'amateur'(?) hobby podshavers alike on the forum (there are many I'd quite like to own !) , in all honesty , the above shape from Mr Monkey is top of the list . If I didn't have 3 match bats , 9 more in the match bat queue, and 4 or 5 net bats , no cash , and a promise to myself to not buy any bats for at least a year or so .....then I'd already have bought one . Me likes . :D
-
(https://s8.postimg.cc/gxli2vfat/IMG_5124.jpg)
This is what i mean . :D
-
Thankyou 😀
-
Superb looking bats.
I went through your facebook page, very interesting and some impressive photos.
I particularly like the one with the shoulders ... look very neat.
-
Long long way to go yet before I'm happy with them, but at the end of the day, it's the process I enjoy, and I'll continue to learn and improve with every bat made.
It's a hobby/love/ only, it's never going to be for making money, I have a job I enjoy, and I'm paid well for.
Many thanks for your comments

Final polishing this morning, then I can deliver it

That looks fabulous well done. I think the toe shape being a bit more GM rather than flat is good. Also the profile looks very intimidating!
Not sure I could lift that mind...!
-
That looks absolutely stunning mate well done. Any player would be proud to use a stick like that.
-
(https://s8.postimg.cc/z04infdl1/IMG_5343.jpg)
How much would this cost. Beautiful shape
-
Depends on what grade you want etc
-
Grade 1. 12 straight grains. Weight2.8. 40 inch edges no concaving. Thick round handle.
^Just kidding. I don't need to buy as already got few but if you could tell me price of grade 3 and 2 in SH please .

I love that big toe!!
How is the ping mid/mid-high? How'd you rate overall ping of the bat?
-
Pings low on that tbh
Pitches in Oxfordshire are low bouncing, so it’s perfect really
It’s for an Oxfordshire ladies player, so hopefully it does the job

Some really good bats mate and you have plenty of skill. Can I ask though all the bats seem to have toes running through the toe, is that just your personal choice for your profiles or just what recent customers have asked for?
-
Toes running through the toes?
You mean spine through the toe?
My personal preference yeah,,,not easy to do, but I like it, and it’s gotta give a little more support to a vulnerable area
-

Sorry that’s what I meant spine into the toe. I know there is a feeling that they offer better protection to the toe area, but do you find they don’t pick up as well as a duckbill toe?
-

If you go through prevoius pages mr monkey has done some bats without the spine into the toe , but the spine into the toe is his 'signature' and the way he does it is skillful and stylish.
-
Mr soulman, I’m not going to do a duckbill, there’s no point
A good spread of wood across the lower half of the bat, has to better yes?
I play cricket, so I’ve a rough idea of where the ball strikes a bat, I’m not going to create a vulnerable area, just to get a bat to pick up better
It is a fine line tho, that’s why I have concentrated more on the toe shape I do
I’m sure someone’s said before, it’s a tk/laver/Salix hybrid really
I’ve just read what I’ve posted above, and it comes across aggressive to me?, sorry if it seems that way, not meant to be
Many thanks for the comments biggie

Thanks @Northern monkey for taking the time to reply. I was only asking about the spine into the toe in that it’s good to see someone starting out learn this way as I know it’s a harder shape to produce and harder still to get to pick up light. I didn’t mean any offence in terms of asking about duck bill shapes, as you say I have played a lot of cricket and now prefer personally a duck bill as pick up and feel is really important to me and touch wood not managed to have a toe go on me yet
Keep up the great work
-
In terms of duck bill versus other toe shapes, yes it's gonna pick up a lot better, and it's a damn sight easier to shape, two mins with a drawknife instead of ages to create other shapes
But, as I've also said previously, it's this process I enjoy, so win win for me really

Stunning finishing mate! Really love the rounded shape of the toe
-
looks great, more extreme than the shoulderless one i did. bloody love it!!
-
Thank you, thank you thank you so very much.
Lovely curves, great innovation, looks divine.
-
A mongoose outdone by a monkey !
-
Very interesting look, @Northern monkey .
Is this a standard SH length bath? Weight? How long is the handle? How's the balance of this bat?
-
Good job I’m sat on the sofa recovering from yesterday’s game and got nowt better to do, eh internal!
Balance is not bad, just strung the handle, which is normal sh length, as is the bat overall length
I’m not gonna weigh it,,,as I don’t want to cloud my judgment when I use it
It’s packing a hell of a lot of wood in the main hitting area, and might need a bit taking off the top half, but I want to use it first
It was a damaged part made, so leant itself to this perfectly

oosh bat porn right there!!
-
It is very nice
-
im noticing a good few bats have a grey tinge to them these days ............ is that a velum cleft or something?
-
Does look grey on the picture , it was going dark when I took the pic
Velum cleft?
-
Pretty sure Velum grade is the lowest grade you can get. That looks sublime
-
That looks like a low grade cleft??? Okaaay
I agree six sixes, it’s as lush as lush gets, but each to their own I suppose
-
Put it this way, if I could get more clefts like that, I could give up the day job
No bs
Never understood the bleaching thing tbh
I love character in a blade, but I know most prefer clean faces etc
-
Holy Moly, that's as good as it gets!! GRAINS!!!!
Hope you're planning on making this into a bat for yourself :)
Either that, or you can give it to the guy you got your amazing travisher from ;)
-
I love that travisher

@Northern monkey Look stunning mate. If I Didn't have my bats sorted I'd be approaching you to give your bats a go! Remind me of Laver and Wood.
-
Ah cheers, huge compliment
My handles are based on my old laver and some of my bats toes are very similar to that too
Huge fan of laver bats
-
That looks a stunning cleft and a sensational shape!
You've certainly done it justice mate :)
-
Very nice work again, on my shopping list for 2019
-
Am I right in saying this is your hobbie or is it a business
If a hobbie you are very skilled :)

Looks stunning Mark! That is one lush bat! :D
Keep up the awesome work mate.....
-
Just a hobby,,,,,
I have a decent , fairly well paid job I enjoy,,,, for now
Thank you for your comments
-
Lovely job again mate
-
As per other comments once again looks like a lovely shape and from the pics very will finished with a lovely all round shape
-
The shapes very full, zero concaving, nice thick toe etc
Should be 2.10 finished
The bats far from finished, it’s just had the profile sanded with 120grit, I wanted to show one unfinished/polished for once
It will look a lot prettier once I’ve put the hours in finishing it properly
Thanks again for the comments

Dug this out the shed today, I’m hoping I can make it a bit smaller, so I’ve taken measurements and I’ll order some box section to make a framework
-
Saw you post this on facebook. Be interested to see how this goes.
-
I’m gonna simplify it as much as I can,, hand feed the cleft and maybe a screw feed for the roller, then I can fit it in the shed

Outstanding as always. Love the ingenuity of the press. Ive also seen a normal jack being used upside down to push the roller down.
-
Cheers,,,
Hmm the press,,,sat there today, and thought sod it, I’m gonna fabricate one instead of adapting various bits .
The simplest I’ve seen is lavers, so I’ll try and fab something like that.
I keep forgetting I was a structural steel engineer in a former life
-
@Northern monkey this is one of my fav threads for pure bat porn :) love your bat pics, well done.
How is the @JK Lewis project coming along?
or am was someone else doing that one!!
-
Thankyou Tush for your kind words
The two clefts from Justin, yeah, when I’ve got chance I’ll crack on with em
I’ve put them to dry in my airer and they’ve lost a fair bit of weight, so I’m waiting for that to settle too, then I’ll begin work on them

Nice bit of weight loss from both clefts
Good to see bud, you must have a powerful airing cupboard! The gap in weight between NG and WG is being maintained, which is interesting.
I've also been fascinated to study the growth patterns, from the end grain of the WG wood. You can really see how growth spurts and then halts, through the year. I should post up a photo of this.
-
@Northern monkey so whats the standard between cleft weight and finished weight of the bat? is about 1 lb lighter or more? I think a while back someone had posted that usually there is a certain amount of weight you can assume comes off to determine roughly what the finished weight would be!!
-
Not got a clue what you’ve just asked me Tush! Please forgive my ignorance
Are you asking what the finished weight of the bats will be based on the cleft weight?
Justin, it’s a steady 30 degrees in there, so nothing extreme, I’ll weigh em tomorrow and see what they are like as I’ve left em out overnight .
-
Yeah just checked they’ve both put a tiny bit back on
So hopefully make a start on em both soon
-

Haha yes, is there a number that the batmakers know so if the cleft is 3lb 13oz the bat will 2lb 13oz or it always varies. I was asking if you'd be able the guess the finished weight based on cleft weight.
-
I suppose if you cut the clefts to a specific size and weigh em etc and do the whole volume thing, then yes definitely.
But tbh I’m playing at it at the minute,,,the clefts have been cut by Justin,, I’ll take em down to workable size and go from there.
Gotta pull me finger out and build a new press first!ha

100% mate! Your work deserves to be fully advertised! Love the orange ones btw.
My thought is just to leave enough space on the back of the bats so that every forum user who gives them a go can sign their name, or just leave their mark, on the bat they prefer. Then we can keep score over time.

Wasn't the biggest fan of the stickers but they look lovely with a bit more colour in them, good work.

Think the Cadbury purple will look really nice

I love this thread - the quality of shaping and finishing exceeds that of many batmakers imo. @Northern monkey will have to get in contact sometime soon about one of these :D

-
I think I've seen today at the nets a guy with your bat, at least I've seen the same stickers, think that's last year's
-
Ah right, where were the nets?
Not sure if your saying the stickers in the picture are last years?
-
Wimbledon, think they're black and white, as the bat was used, that is why I thought they're fun last year 🙂
-
Nope lovely chap called Joshi, he’s just had another bat off me this week, both have this years stickers on
-
Yes, his name is joshi, on second thought I was thinking they've started nets a couple of weeks ago, might be that's why I got the impression that's an used bat, but you're right, again 😀
-
I was bowling at 3rd net when he was walking in to bat at net 1 to bat, with 2 bats, one used and one new as far I could notice he used the new one, stickers were stunning and shining,
That's not my club just had a 1st net with them.

-
Thankyou Mr Internal
These are part mades I’m shaping , so already pressed
If the weathers ok this Friday, I’ll try and build a press, as I dismantled my other home built one as it wouldn’t fit in either of my sheds
I’m gonna mock it up in wood first and then translate the measurements over to get a steel frame cut and welded up
As far as ping, yeah they ping ok,,,they are pressed by someone who knows what they are doing

-
That's a work of art
-
God knows how I’m supposed to hand that over

Lovely work mate, looks a stunner! See you're embracing the duckbill style/no spine to the toe profile now :D
-
That curvy toe is to die for. Seen a photo of one of these in use over the weekend but cant remember exactly where, possibly instagram!
-
I’ll always round the toes off,,,
And yeah, I’m loving the duckbill kohli profile,,,,,it’s still a very thick toe, the spines 60mm peak on that so you can see there’s a lot of meat in the toe area.
Being honest, this bat feels it’s weight,(2.10), but it’s incredibly full, zero concaving, full width etc etc so I’m really really chuffed with it.
The lads an Oxfordshire player, so I know it’s gonna be used properly, and I can’t wait to see how it goes

Got sidetracked with a weight reduction on a newbery,,, always interesting working on other bat makes
Managed to get 3ounce off it, but I didn’t take any before pictures, just used the travisher to introduce a little concaving.

I’m getting more and more of these jobs in from word of mouth, and I enjoy the work
I'm not surprised - with the quality of the work you've done, these bat's / mods would just about sell themselves.
Looking fantastic as always.
-
Just a bit of advice,,, I’ve peed about with sanders for years now, I even got a festool.
But just got a dewalt random orbital, absolutely love it, 2.5mm orbit so leaves a decent finish, has good dust extraction and a balance weight to stop excessive vibration
100 quid or thereabouts
Highly recommended if your finishing bats
-
Interesting to hear that. As I wait for willow to arrive, I've been practicing on some older pine that I have laying around. A good way to test the tools, as well as the shaping, sanding and polishing technique.
I've just got a 125mm random orbital sander, and like what it does, but can only find papers for it up to 240 grit. From memory, you sand a lot higher than that, so what do you use?
I was looking in a hardware shop and can only find over 240 grit in sheets of wet and dry, but am a bit wary of using it on timber for some reason.

-
And eBay for discs,,, I can’t find them anywhere in the country other than eBay and Amazon
-
Nice collection! :) Mine is a Ryobi so it sounds like I'll be buying again :( , however it does have a dust extractor and variable speed, so we'll see how it goes, and how serious I get with the bat making caper.
If I can get half the finish that you do, I'll be more than pleased!

Interesting handle. What's the thinking behind it? I have some Lavers that have handles similar to this but no so pronounced.
-
It'd be amazing is someone could carve an ergonomic handle that correctly fit the bottom and top hand. Naturally, the grooving for top and bottom side would have to be different.
-
It’s just so the hand sits naturally on the handle, I’ve found when the shoulders are dropped there’s actually a tendency to drop your hands even further down the handle,,,using that shape means the hands are in the perfect position. Just an evolution based on use.
I spend a lot of time on making sure all my handles feel good,,such a huge part of how a bat feels and ultimately plays

Good man! You are on the right track.
Have you thought about shaving the sides a certain way to better fit a gloved top and bottom hand? I wish there was a way to hold a bar of wax or clay with a gloved hand to leave the gloved-hand impression and somehow carving a bat handle based on the prints.
-
Look at the picture on the previous page, it shows the handle a little better.
That is perfect for the bottom hand, and the top half of the handle is always round
I’ve tried every way of doing handles and this is by far the most user friendly
Like I said, I understand how important the feel of a bat handle is

That handle looks really interesting, the concept works in theory....would like to hear from a user of your bats as to how it feels in practice. I love when bat makers experiment away from the ordinary

Lovely shape as always mate and the finish looks quality
-
Hmm, it’s a proper low middle shape on this, I’ve got two to do,, not a fan tbh, but they are copied from a customer bat.
I’ve struggled to get it to pick up how I like them,(his bats certain Taunton brand) but this picks up a lot better than his bat so he should be well chuffed
2.10 finished

@Northern monkey the 1st couple of pics didn’t show the middle as low as you have shown and agree not my favoured shape but again the quality of the bats and and the finish is superb
-
Thankyou for the comments 👍

Excellent work as always mate.
Big fan of a low middle myself and never feel they don't pick up well, but we're all different I suppose! :D

Great to see your work bud. About how many bats have you made now?

Probably done 70ish, not including refurbs/re handles

Back on with the bat press for an hour whilst the kids are in bed
Managed to source an electric hydraulic log press, so hopefully I can push the cleft through the rollers

The roller frame work is just temporary, but it’s made from ash which is blooming strong stuff
I’ll mock it up, then fab in box section

-
That press idea looks like it could work well.
Did you make the roller yourself? I was thinking I could make some with my hydraulic copy attachment with various curvatures for the face.
-
Looking good! What are you planning for the pressure adjustment?
I realize that it's only a mock up, but it won't last long with a 10m bolt through the roller. From what I've heard on videos, some companies press to 5500 psi, and that will make short work of anything that is under-engineered. But I'm sure you already knew that!
-
Hmmm all questions I’ve pondered for years too
And the psi thing was the initial reason for starting the build
There are various methods to adjust the roller height
I was going to use an electric actuator, I also have various threaded screws from lathes.
But,,, for the minute, packing the cleft UP with foam works
Also bear in mind, this is only for finished bats, and I’m not mass producing
So 8mm, 10mm etc are fine for now, as is the ash framework and shelf bracket reinforcement.
And the roller framework ,(the orange part) and spindle is rated to 3 tonne
It’s off a car pulley
This is built to a zero budget

Exquisite finish!
So, you made a thick toe but scalloped it from the back side to reduce weight?
-
Cheers internal,,,,,it’s a thickish toe yeah,,,there’s no scallopping as such, as I try to get the toe area rounded, almost domelike.
It could just be the camera angle,,,
The toe tapers down from the highest part of the spine, then it’s rounded off,,it’s easier to do than scalloping it out, but hard to get an even profile across the toe..
For the weight it’s a very very full profile, that spines 62mm

^ Got it. Must be the camera angle.
-
Lovely finish mate....as always!

Very crisp lines on that - nice! No shortcuts anywhere to be seen - even the toe gets a mirror finish :0

Out of interest though, what would you grade this particular bat?

Grade one plus just to wind a few up
-
I have to say you do put a lovely finish on your bats!
Out of interest though, what would you grade this particular bat?
In all seriousness, I can only sell them/grade them on how the clefts are sold to me
That particular bat is a grade one in my eyes,,, but for whatever reason taps up really well, so would command slightly more because of that
-
Can't argue with that, trying to fathom how different bat makers grade their bats is baffling. surely it's more about the performance of the bat...
-
Absolutely agree
As for looks, it depends if there is something that may affect the blades performance or longevity
I’m lucky in that the choice I have is all my own choosing,,,
Personally I love markings/knots etc in a bat
But I’m not a fan of butterfly tbh

👍😁 Just couldn't tell what profile it was, so was just interested to see a side on shot
-
Tbh I struggle taking pics side on, don’t know why, I just don’t like em
It’s just my usual profile, I’ve offset the edges slightly on this,(I could give you loads of technical bs about why etc, but tbh I just like the look)
-
Fair enough mate, just find the side on shot interesting to see where the middle/swell is really, as difficult to tell sometimes.
Looks a lovely bat anyway.
-
Tbh I struggle taking pics side on, don’t know why, I just don’t like em
I thought it was just me! For some reason the pictures I take never seemed to reflect the side on profile I see with my eyes.
Super work as always :) I would LOVE to see a video of your batmaking process. Any chance of that ever happening?
-
Hmmm , I am actually a very shy retiring type, but yeah it could be a possibility.
Bear in mind I’m a complete technophobe and it took me about 3yrs of being on here before I figured out how to post pics ha.
To be honest, what I do is nothing different to the way bats have been made for generations apart from the shaping side is done using my shave horse and sat down.
I use a drawknife/travisher and sometimes an electric planer if the willows full of knots
So nothing different there
As for finishing, again tbh that’s just time, and lots of it
The bat I’ve just posted pics of, Will no doubt be re sanded and polished again until I’m happy with the results
But yeah , if you have an easy suggestion for uploading a clip, I’d be happy too film one
-
:) Great to hear!
I'm sure you use all the traditional methods that everyone else does, but I really enjoy the bat making/repair videos other people have done, and would love to see your take on it.
For example, using an electric planer. I've never seen one used in any other video's I've watched, but that's a great idea!
Unfortunately I'm green when it comes to video making and editing as well, but I'm sure somebody here would be able to help out.
Youtube is free and pretty easy to upload videos. From memory you need to be registered, and the process isn't that different to uploading photos to a host.
Thanks for entertaining the idea anyway. Anyone else keen to see a Video?
-

Super work as always :) I would LOVE to see a video of your batmaking process. Any chance of that ever happening?
That's a serious point. I find exactly the same. You have some lovely looking bat with a great profile but the camera makes it look really uninteresting from the side. It must be because of the lens set up in mobile phones. Manufacturers and serious sellers do a much better job than I can and I guess they are using a camera with a big lens to take the pictures.
-
I’ll look into YouTube, as it’s something I should be doing really then I can link it into my insta and Facebook
I agree entirely with the side on bat pictures, they just look dull?
My only issue with my sort of toe up shots, is it tends to exaggerate the duckbill look to them
I do still need to build a little photo booth,(I have some black gloss laminate) which I hope will make the bats easier to photograph.
I’m so busy at the minute tho, I really don’t get two minutes to do anything
Thank you for the comments tho, means a lot

Sensational as always!
Love the profile and the cleanliness of the finish is top notch.
-
Lovely as always mate
-
That's another beauty. I'll bet the new owner will be over the moon with it.
-
Thank you for the comments
Yes that is a really nice bat,I’ve not seen a bat with the grains curved that way before
Looks good, but really does ping ridiculous
It’s gonna be hard letting this go for sure, but it’s off to one of my sons friends so I know it’ll be used at it should be

Gorgeous shape mate and those black and orange stickers are really starting to grow on me. You have some serious talent mate. Iv seen a couple of bats with this kind of banana grains but normally on bats that have a lot of stickers so hides them a bit I assume they are caused by the tree being blown around a lot?
-
Thank you for your comments 👍
I suppose the tree blowing around would explain the grain structure, wasn’t sure if maybe it was a top heavy tree or something,,,
I’ll be keen to get my hands on more of these if ever I spot them
-
It’s horrible having such a fantastic bat maker 10 minutes down the road, and having to restrain myself from visiting.

-
It’s not overly big,,,edges and spine are well inside a bat gauge,,(please no one ask me to measure em)
Interesting how different the profile looks from a different angle. Either way, you’ve got top batmaking skills.
How hard do you press your bats typically?
-
Imo the bats are slightly soft pressed, a little knocking in is needed
Which again in my opinion is how bats should be pressed
-
I like how the edge flow to the toe. Is there a reason for the small bow in the center part of the bat?
-
No reason at all,,,camera angle probably exaggerates it a little
-
The profile on that is superb!!
-
Yeah the young lad picked it up last night, I think he was a bit surprised at the size of it for the weight.
He’s only just arrived from sth Africa so I wanted to make something that would suit the wickets in Oxfordshire and stop him breaking the toes on his bats,, he also wanted it a little longer than sh size as he’s growing rapidly.
So well chuffed with it tbh
And I’ve enjoyed shaping that toe profile again,,,, food for thought

Back on with this again as the weather has been nice enough to get out and weld it up etc,(worked ok held together with g clamps)
I’ve got a feeling I’ll be spending a lot of time tweaking it, but chuffed I got there eventually
It must be 7yrs since I first started to play around with building a press,(and a portable one at that)
The chap it was for has long since (No Swearing Please) off, and maybe that was the inspiration to crack on and build it,, who knows

@Northern monkey is that one of Denlys bats?
-
Put it this way,,, if that’s the type of bats these lads get, it’s no wonder they hit the ball the way they do

Is that an actual Bat Denly has used and owned? Any more pics or certain specs about it?
Has he contacted you for a copy?
-
It was given to a friend by Denly
And no chance have I had willow like that to copy a bat with
-
Does it have the SF stamp on the side?
And is the pick up very light?
-
I’ll have a look later and take more pictures
Picks up quite heavy tbh, weighs 2.11 ish
Pings from the toe to the spine tho
-
This bat gonna keep us all entertained for few days during lockdown.
Thank you @Northern monkey

Now that looks like an interesting shape going on there mate??
-
Big cleft I had sitting around,,,made a change to fit my own handle etc
Always liked the pre rule change Aussie gn,s, so that’s the first of a few I’ll make during this lockdown
-
Interesting, to say the least. I'd like to know how's is it's response higher on the blade?
-
Any more information or pics in the Denly bat?

Upper part of bat dimensions are same as this 2.10 bat,, shoulder edges are slightly bigger
The response up there is pretty much the same as as any other bat,,, must admit I don’t usually hit a ball up there that often on our wickets
And this bat has 50mm edges and a 73mm spine, which kinda alters proportions

-
That new spine shape resembles my jeans when i see the finish on your bats!! ;)
Denly's looks a beast, I've got a couple of H4L's similar size and shape but they'll be heavier that that!!

Very very little concaving
Rounded face on it
Square toe
Picks up its weight
But the ping, like I’ve said before is very very good
It does look well used tho,

And one picture for a little context
Both bats similar weight
-
Not as big as it looks from the toe up really
No mate, and the width is down a bit too
-
Interesting bat mate. Top effort!
This shows how difficult it is to know by looking at pictures what weight, size a bat is and how sizes to me are almost irrelevant. If a bat pings, it pings. Whether its maxing out a gauge or not won't really make any difference to me.

Wow!! Quite a departure from your usual shapes, but looks great.
Those XP80's were a radical shape, and your spine height isn't far from matching it.
Is that done to customer's specs, or just because you had a cleft that would allow it?
-
Cheers
Nah it was just cos I love those shapes,,, I have a few oversized clefts, and now I have some free time it makes sense to chuck some handles in em an max out the specs

Man that is massive
-
If you look at the edge stickers,(they look tiny) it gives an idea of size
-
I love the look of that one. Whoever ends up with it will surely get some comments as they walk out to the middle.
Random question - how do you find those long stickers on the back with a more extreme shape? I’ve got stickers of similar length, but I’m having an issue getting them to stick properly. Can’t work out if it’s due to the fact that I’ve not kept things straight/equal, stickers aren’t ‘proper’ bat stickers or if it’s all down to the geometry!
-
Stickers can be a pain tbh,,, I actually got these shortened because I just couldn’t get them to fit half the time
-
Glad it’s not just me!

I love @Northern monkey bats (I have 2), however he and I disagree about how to show off the profiles of his bats (he claims it's because I am a Southern softy), I'm reluctant to admit he may be right.
I wonder if his shots sometimes do them justice, so especially for the simple-minded of us on here, I've attached a photo of one of his profiles side-on, which I happen to think is a thing of beauty and absolutely love!

Yeah both different,,,I call it offset, offset edge, do you think it will catch on?
Hopefully yes, they are both the same, and it’s just the angle of dangle of the pictures
Looks great as always mate 👌 Are the edge sizes different, or is it just the angle?

Definitely, why not?! 😆
I just wondered if it was something funky someone had requested to have. You never know!
-
Nah same jig, template used for both sides
-
I much prefer traditional bat shapes myself and that side shot is the nicest profile I’ve seen so far from NM
It’s just a beautiful shape!
-
And also, even though it looks like I have a massive weapon, it picks up like an Angel's fart, and cut's through the air like the Grim-reaper's scythe

That’s a Stunning piece of willow. Also looks like you have done that justice with the shape any chance of a side in shot as looks a lovely mid/high middle
Thank you,,,, it’s actually quite a low middle on it,, it’s just that it’s a very thick toe,35mm ish,,, the profiles based on my old Toro, but slightly bigger overall,,, the shoulders are dropped 30mm , etc
Finished weight is under 2.11,,, picks up like a feather,(I used one for three seasons at this weight, normally I’m a strict 2.9)
Big fan of this shape,, and can’t believe I’ve not made one sooner
I’ll finish polishing it properly tomorrow and sticker it up etc, and take some better pics

You must be on good terms with your willow supplier, or can you get anything at a price?
They look superb. Got any more angles of those last four?

Bit better angle to see the shape,,, it was initially for myself, but as always seems to happen, a customer wanted it,,, so I’ll have to make another when I get chance
It’s a very very big bat, the toe is 35mm plus for instance.
It’s also slightly shorter blade/longer handle, which personally I prefer

Love your bats! Has inspired me to give it a go! When you put in the angled toe is that something you do right at the beginning on a table saw/band saw or later on a disk sander?

-
Sorry may have opened a can of worms there with that request...should have PM'd you!
-
Also please can I ask how you sharpen your curved tools? I usually use a honing guide so I'm having trouble with mine!
-
Sharpening a travisher is easy enough as long as the cutting angle is spot on
I use an old bat handle with wet and dry wrapped round it,,, roll it along the cutting edge, then the back edge
Go through the grades, your looking for even burrs along the edges.
Start at 600grit, and finish on 1500 or so
As with most things these days, you tube is your friend.

Now the travisher can be used to form the spine and remove wood from as much of the blade as possible,, I love this tool and actually draw it towards me as opposed to away as traditionally used.
I can get a pretty good finish using this tool and remove a huge amount of willow, it really is a perfect tool for shaping bats

Taking shape now,,, I’m leaning more towards the scat featured on ijc years ago, so slightly bigger edges and higher spine,,, I may drop the spine height a little, but for now, I’ll keep as much of it as possible,,, the bats picking up amazing at this point, and after weighing it, I’m surprised it’s at 2.9 or so, as it picks up so nice

Bit of work on the handle and shoulders, I’ll get a nice oval on the bottom hand.
-
I’ve not worked to a weight with this, just gone off approx size to the scat pictures and pick up.
I’ll probably drop the edges and spine a little as they are at 36 and 65 at the min, so there’s plenty to remove if it needs it.
Only scat I’ve picked up, was Simon Mays, and that was a lovely bat, so hopefully I can get this to pick up as nice as that did
-
:thumbs_up lovely bat. Just out of curiosity what is the pre and post shapeup weights?
-
It was just over 3lb, not sure what it’ll end up at yet, I was gonna shape it and see tbh

Went a little bit bigger on edge size, as I didn’t weigh the bat, just went on pick up etc, turned out very full, especially low down, but picks up very very nice,,, finished weight will be 2.10 ish, which is a lot heavier than I use normally, so shows how nice it picks up

Looks beautiful!
How's the pickup on this bat? It seems bottom heavy? Did you leave shoulder big/thick to help with the balance?
-
That shape reminds me a bit of a Purist or Flare. Nice work! Lovely finishing too.
-
Looks beautiful!

Thank you,,,, it picks up very nice, the spine is high into the shoulders, the bat has very little concaving along the profile, so it’s a very full bat for the weight.
I could have removed a lot of wood from the toe area and got the bat to pick up like a feather, but like I said earlier in the bat shaping, I wanted to keep it as full as possible and really maximise the hitting area.
The finished weight is 2.10.5, and i reckon I could use it in a game, (my match bat is 2.8
-
That shape reminds me a bit of a Purist or Flare. Nice work! Lovely finishing too.
Gotta be honest, the purist is one of my favourite shapes, and thank you for the kind words
-
The bats are superb as always, but I'm very interested in the travisher blades!
What was the starting material? How did you go about heating and getting the right curve? Do they fit the 'ray isles' travishers, or do you have your own body design?
I've had a go at making my own, and while they remove wood ok, I'm sure they don't measure up to a real one.
-
I used 01 tool steel.
I made a little coffee can forge,(you tube)
I forged the curve as per my existing travisher,(bought off here), and forged it around my lathe chuck and my vice, very easy to do tbh
The cutting angle is a challenge to grind and get perfect as it’s a very sharp angle, but tbh I enjoy sharpening them so no worries really
I’ve made one wood body out of oak, and that is shaped to my hands and to the way I use it,(I pull the travisher towards me).
These other ones, I’m going to make a couple of different design bodies, just to try them out.
I’ve seen the price of these online etc, and they are a lot of money .
The draw knife is a lot easier to make, but obviously it costs a lot more for the steel

-
outstanding as always!
-
Very cool! Thanks for the pics and explanation :)
I remember that getting an even bevel on a curved blade was a tricky process.
The price and availability of these was also my main driver in attempting to make my own.
-
Easier if you grind the bevel before forging the curve, then it’s just a case of sharpening the edge afterwards
-

That's a thing of beauty.
Are they for sale?
-
Thank you
And yes eventually
-
Sweet! Looks every bit as good as anything else on the market.
If you don't mind, what are the measurements of the curve for your typical blade - specifically, the distance between the outer edges of the blade, and the depth of the curve between those points?

The profile is based on an old b3, I’ve just had in for a refurb,,,,nice and full, with an extra thick toe area, and very minimal concaving
It picks up its weight, but feels very nicely balanced, and obviously packs a punch.
And I love the face, with the heartwood,
I’ll try and post more bat pictures on here,(I’m sure that’s what this forum is for?), hopefully a few like and appreciate what I do
-
Very nice as always mate 👌
-
I've said it before but those blue stickers are stunning. What kind of specs did this one end up with?
-
Think the toes around 32mm, the edges are 37mm ish, spines around 60mm
Not a light cleft by any means, but not bad considering the heartwood,,,,ive tried not to concave it and keep it as full as possible.
-
That's a serious chunk of willow, very impressed.

Looks really nice ... 👍

I do love a gauge buster! Hope you don't mind @Northern monkey but I'll probably be trawling through this thread and downloading pics of the profiles you've made to get some inspiration for my order, when I get round to it. :D

I’m not gonna mind that 😉

Managed to dodge the rain today and finish these two off,,, the blue one is a grade one, the black is a two
Both similar specs 43/63 edge/spine, but the grade two is two ounces heavier.
2.10 and 2.12,,,, both pick up like 2.6 😉 (sorry couldn’t resist)

Exquisite work @Northern monkey . Watched a stockist's video of some of your bats, and talked about how you sorted him out a few years ago. You know you're doing something right when you convert someone from using a 2.7 twig to using a 2.11. Please keep the converting and batmaking up! :)
-
Cheers Chad,,,yeah, to be fair, that was a very nice bat he had off me,,(as were the two he’s just got)

Lovely little Harrow,off out
Love this profile,, matches my old match bat, zero concaving, decent toe, short blade, longer handle.
Still got decent edges and spine on it, but has a really good spread of willow..
This is for a young lad in Sth Africa who’s had a few bats off me over the years,, always nice to help youngsters out with a decent bat..

2.10 finished weight
This is a copy of a good friends bat, enjoyed shaping this a lot, picks up very nice for the weight
-
Deeeeeelightful.
-
Yep, delightful, look at this rounded toe 👌
-
Oh come on, you're just showing off now.
Stunning, the way you shape your bats has a certain elegance to it, the edge profile from the shoulder to the centre of the toe is almost painting-esque! Top work again Mark, really do love seeing your craftsmanship. :)
-
Cheers Chad,AJ, and Mark for the kind words.
This shapes not an easy one to do, as the lines of the spine and the edges had to flow,,I wanted the pick up to reflect the amount of wood in the hitting area, but still be decent for playing the short balls, this lad will face..
He’s a decent batter that opens, so he will usually face quicker bowling, so needs to be able to play his shots..
His existing bat was an m&h, made at Taunton whilst he watched,(bit of a rarity these days but hey ho) so was nice trying to recreate it, but add my touches to it.
-
Lovely as usual mate finishing looks as good as anything on the market and profiles always look nice and big. Top work mate
-
Cheers boss

They're definitely flowing 👌
Think it's mid high profile, from the looks of these pics
-
That is just beautiful to look at :) The finish, the lines and sharpness of all the edge work is super crisp. From my little dabble of batmaking I can really appreciate just how hard it is to get a good looking spine through to the toe. Outstanding job!
I keep thinking your photography must be the secret, but I have a feeling good photography would only show up all the flaws with my handywork :D
Not a flaw to be seen anywhere with your work. I honesty run out of superlatives.
-
Thank you

Good afternoon Suraj,,,,chuck me a msg on fb or insta,,,my prices are on my website
And yes,,I like the butterfly stain a lot, and this particular one was a decent weight so has made a huge bat

I heard making butterfly stained bats are tougher.

-
Impressive colour scheme!
Last Monday's game, the team I was playing for, it's opener was using your
% white willow bat, perfect straight grains, with black stickers on it, you might remember him, he's an older Asian guy, that bat was new and made very beautiful sounds!

New shape for next year
-
Featuring a lot more concaving than I’ve done in the past, but keeping the high edges and flowing spine..
Also still keeping a decent toe thickness on them and tapering the profile up from the toe with little concaving there, for those amongst us that can’t resist digging out Yorkers or chasing full bungers
These three are all pushing 2.11 finished, maybe a little less, but pick up very nice,(the butterfly will be my match bat,),
Been a mad year tbh, so it’s nice to make a few bats to how I feel the cleft develops, as opposed to a specific weight/shape etc

Haven't even used my new bat yet and you're getting me thinking about another @Northern monkey 😅
-
After years of being a grain tart etc, I’m definitely a convert to butterfly willow
These two ping so nice, the only negatives are they are slightly heavier than the pro type willow
But I’d happily use these no bother

I've not used a butterfly before but heard great things about the ping. I think it's nice to have a bat with character. They both look great.
-
I think the only ones I’d seen all had the stain across the face, and tbh I wasn’t a fan of the hardness of these,,,yes a lot are fans, but I prefer a softer feel.
As with most things, feel is incredibly subjective, but there’s no getting away from the fact they do ping nicely
And I love character in a blade, once the stain is sanded beyond 400grit or so, it really begins to stand out beautifully.

What would you charge for a custom butterfly?

Top work as always Mark and that finishing just looks absolutely spot on. Can I ask if your happy to answer. Do you linseed wax before or within your polishing stage? Just ask as this one seems to be a lovely shade as if waxed or linseed oiled.
-
No it’s just polish Chris,,,,
This bats quite dark in colour, almost a caramel colour.
I tend to oil the bat after I’ve fitted stickers, unless the customer wants to do it,(not very often)
-
after oiling its going to look like its been in the chip pan ;)

Just iv played about with before and after in terms of waxing and thought I would pick the brains as your finishing seems right up there every time 👍

What’s a chip pan?😉

I’ve not used wax on a bat for ages tbh, I do have some somewhere, but oil just seems to prepare the bat better for knocking in.
The other thing I suppose Chris, is I’d probably have to use a separate mop with the wax, and my polisher is set up for the polish I use.

Beautiful shapes as usual @Northern monkey, barely played in the bat I've got from you and I'm tempted by another!
-
Shaping this up,,I’m thinking, I really need to play this year
This ones bang on 2.9 finished, picks up so nice, I’ve really tried to not concave it, rather drop the spine and edges and remove weight all over.
I have a few millichamp made bats, and a lovely b3, that have very similar profiles to this, it just feels so nice.
Not the most on trend shape, but definitely one that’ll give full value for all shots, and has a decent toe on it for our low slow wickets.
Yup, I’d have this one no bother
And thanks mate for the kind words

Been mad busy tbh
Moved house,(and obviously my shed/outdoor workshop) but had loads of bats to get out, so I’ve not had chance to set everything up yet
Hopefully I’ll be able to spend a bit of time getting it all a little better organised
Bat shapes are evolving for me,, I’m drifting ever further away from any concaving whatsoever.
Feedbacks been encouraging and I feel it gives a much better performing bat
But obviously it’s subjective,,

Really chuffed with this, for a lot of reasons,, main one being it’s a lot higher overall middle position than I normally do,, also has a lot more concaving than my usual,, but the main one is,, it’s as near to a copy of a customers stunning treasured scat pro.
I probably spent way too much time measuring the original, but wanted this to be as exact as possible...
Safe to say, I’ll be doing a few more

Hi @Northern monkey
I have the same questions for you as I did Jonny:
Now that it is resolutely the offseason, what do you think is the biggest improvement you've made as a bat maker over the last 12 months? Where are you looking to improve still? What is the most interesting thing you've learned?
-
Morning,,,,definitely the off season,,peeing it down here, and freezing cold.
For me,,it’s dropping the edges/big spines and getting my bats a lot fuller whilst keeping the thick Oxfordshire toe.
At the end of the day, I can only work with the willow I’m supplied, and this is where I won’t compromise,,,I still hand pick every piece,,generally based on initial performance,(I’m only working from part mades).
I’ve been lucky to have quite a few pro bats through my hands this year for refurbs/weight reductions etc and most if not all,are pretty similar in shape and profiles, which is pretty obvious really,(if it works, why change it),,,
I’ve tweaked my handles/shoulders slightly,,not done as many short blades ,,toned down the sanding grades a little,,,oil all my bats now before releasing them.
Done a few butterfly grade bats, which have all been lovely,(was stupid to sell a couple of them as they were perfect for me and I feel guilty using a pro grade),,
Don’t really think I’ve changed that much to be honest, I know it’s virtually impossible to make money in this game, so I’ve tried to stick to creating the best bat possible from each piece, and not taking the mick with prices.
A big thing for me this year has been referrals from local players, which has kept me very busy, and is what I wanted from the beginning as I enjoy the interaction between customers visiting and discussing what they want,,a big part of that, is understanding the wickets they play on etc and the bowling they face, and being able to tailor the bats to that..
It’s a shame the forum has gotten a little quiet these days, I find it quite funny when I post a bat picture, and get absolutely zero interactions
I used to love looking at pictures of bats on here, whether it was Andy,saf,,Matth4l,,paul aldred,,Ryan kelsall,,etc etc and the threads detailing the processes of crafting bats, but I suppose that’s today’s world.

I think bats are being requested lighter and lighter, as most assume anything abv 2lbs 9oz will be a lump, or they've had one which felt like a lump previously at that weight. Yet when they visit and pick up bats, they realise they don't have to go so light.

Put weight heigher up into the spine and shoulders and a bit in the handle and balanced you can go up a few oz but if you bat along time you can feel it (hence get on the weights)

I think half of it is the bs they get from shops etc,,guaranteed when I weigh their existing bat it’s 2 or 3oz heavier than they’ve been sold.
I’ve got a lovely ss ton in for a toe repair at the min, that’s 2.11.5,,, the guy was sold it from a reputable shop as 2.9.
I’ve got another customer who uses m&h bats,, requesting 2.9,,,,I asked him to weigh his current bat and it’s 2.12 with two grips on.
I totally agree with Dave,, my match bat is 2.7,, I can bat for about 50 runs before my knackered joints give up
I could use a heavier dead weight bat, but my actual batting time would be severely hampered, as would my timing, and playing certain shots.
